OpenSUSE Install :: Updated To 11.4 No Items Under Computer -> System?

Apr 11, 2011

I just used the on-line update to upgrade from 11.3 to 11.4. Now when I click the computer button in lower left, there are no entries under system, ie. control center, yast, install, lock, logout, shutdown. How do I get those back?

Ubuntu :: Update Manager Lists Items That Never Get Updated 8.04 LTS?

Feb 19, 2011

I am running 8.04 LTS on a Dell Inspiron 1525. Update Manager lists a bunch of items that just stay there forever - they never update, they never go away and the check boxes cannot even be checked.

Alot of these are "language-pack-gnome-xxx" updates. I also have one "skype" update that never goes away and can't be checked.Something's wrong and I don't know how to fix it.I want to eventually upgrade the entire OS but I am afraid to do so if my system has problems. I want the update manager window to be completely empty. I want these items to actually update or go away.

I don't have a degree in computer science so please be easy on me when it comes to terminal commands.I tried searching for this problem and, although I'm sure the topic has come up before, I can't seem to find a set of search terms that puts the topic within the top 10 results.

OpenSUSE Install :: Black Screen (11.2) On Restart After Installing Some Items

Nov 11, 2010

A few glitches aside, 11.2 has been very good. Today I installed realcrypt. While in yast, I noticed some other items were set to install. I accepted them along with realcrypt. After the install, clicking the -more applications- button (gnome) did not display the menu, just the mouse wait indicator. After a few tries, I decided to restart. Clicking shutdown did not present the normal menu, but instead instantly shutdown. On restart, I noticed 3-ish orphaned inode(?) messages. After boot completes I'm left with a black screen.I'm running 11.2 Gnome raid-1. The raid array appears to be fine. It emails status on boot, and I received those emails (via google) on the my laptop. I can boot to runlevel 1, so the question is, once there where do I look for cause / fix.

OpenSUSE Install :: Updated From 11.2to 11.3/suse_lost 10 GB?

Jul 17, 2010

I have done a update from openSuse11.2 to 11.3 .,(not new install,I did update install). Now at my PC home / partition after NEW INSTALL of SuSE 11.3 file system shwos 10.6 GB(space taken, busy),it's ok.But on my laptop where I did UPDATE INSTALL / file system has 25 GB(space taken, busy).

My question is how can I release 10 Gb form my laptop(we all fight for free space). The difference it's clear>making update takes more space comparing with new install. I am thinking that the system from my laptop kept old filesytems as backup or whatever.

The situation it's similar with the case when I did a kernel compile (taking more space),but in that case I knew how to do,of course I erased the old configuration files, old kernel, old boot files/vmlinuz etc) after checking the new one kernel and boot from it ,ok status. But in the update case I don't know what should I do,because it's the first time after manny years when I did a update ,not a new install(from scratch) and Suse 11.3 it 's after few days of releasing, and of course it can have some tricks.I assume that you did more updates install for OS than me .So I kindly ask you to advice me.Where shall I look and what shall I delete without affect the stability ,operatibilty ,boot of OS and security for my system existed on my laptop. Please, think 25 GB comparing with 10.6 GB. It's something, isn't it? I would like to have back my 10-12 GB in my hard disk as free space.

OpenSUSE Install :: Upgrading Only Updated Programs?

Mar 21, 2010

I use Factory repositories of KDE4 and there are new releases almost every day in that repository. Although I believe that there are useful updates in the packages, I don't think they are really that crucial that I should update them every day.

When I do update, I usually use graphical frontend and select from menu: Packages >> All Packages >> Update if newer version available. That includes all the updates available either for the program or the package.

I'd really like to be able to sort out these packages that have updates for the programs available. Is there any way to do it?

OpenSUSE Install :: Updated Kernel Will Not Boot - 2.6.37.6

Apr 30, 2011

Just updated to kernel 2.6.37.6-0.5 from:[url]

No error. then rebooted and grub gives following error:

Press Any Key to Continue

this goes to grub boot menu where I then select my old kernel 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop and it boots OK.

Question: Should root(hd2,2) be (hd0,2) like the working kernel?

My menu.lst is:

sda and sdb are not used at this time, sdb will have 12.1 Ms soon. The two windows drives are used by virtualvox for WIN XP backup. Not used often.

OpenSUSE Install :: Keep Iso's Updated - Can't Use Command Line

Jun 25, 2011

Doing an install of Suse 11.4 --- and the screen runs off the monitor to the right. A little guess word with the tab key and I could move through the install process by tabbing three times after the ""help" button. As I'm writing this the machine rebooted after initial load and the screen is okay - and I can see the abort-back-next buttons now. But really, what's with that? That's just so unprofessional. Hopefully the dev team reads these forums since there isn't any easily discoverable way to communicate with them. And you don't keep the iso's updated? The BETA of Firefox 4?? Really? Then I can only update to 4.01 from the repository? so I download an unpack the 5.0 from Mozilla -- and find out ./configure no longer works. The archive extractor still doesn't have an "install package" option anywhere, and now I can't use the command line either?

OpenSUSE Install :: HD Updated - No Keyboard / Mouse After Boot

Jun 3, 2010

I had a normal OpenSuse 11.1 setup, along with Windows XP, swap partition and /home partition. After my hd began failing (badblocks), I cloned the system to a different location (using ddrescue), updated the hd with a new one (bigger), made new partitions on the new hd (preserving the old locations, ex: /dev/sda1 ext3 on old hd still is /dev/sda1 on new one, but made changes to the partitions sizes to make them bigger), recovered all the clones to the new hd, fsck'ed them, recovered grub with install dvd then tried to boot.

On the first boot, it failed to mount / (/dev/sda1) and gave me a command line. I checked /etc/fstab and saw that, on the old setup, it was mounting the partitions based on the HD-id, which obviously changed. I fixed that to use /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, etc. Now, the systems boots fine. But, when I get to the graphical login part, the keyboard and the mouse don't work. It's a Dell Inspiron 1525 notebook, now with a 320gb samsung hd.

Ive been trying to update the various libraries to be able to get a updated version of Firefox installed. Is there any chance that this can work? I need to know if Im wasting my time and should just put winxp on this PC. Also, I cant get any repositories working. I assume the default ones I have on the Suse installation are bad and the ones for the later versions will not work.

I trying to re-install ubuntu on my computer. I'm currently on 10.10 (upgraded from 10.04) but live cd doesn't work with my hardware! I'm on asus G60Jx laptop with nvidia gts 360m. I'm not the only one to have this problem. It's my third message on this forum about this because no one answering me after 5 bump. I ask for help in ask ubuntu. I got "install ubuntu 10.04 and upgrade it, it don't take so much time" ok, I'll do that, but for 11.04, can I expect to be able to use the liveCD installation or I will install 10.04 to upgrade it after? I know that I can't change nothing for 10.10 but a bug is bug, and I wish that my computer will be more supported, thank to all. And this time, answering to me please and show me how can I report this. I know that I can use ubuntu-bug but I didn't found the fine section.

OpenSUSE Install :: Moving A Moderately Complex System From An Old System To A New System

Sep 25, 2010

My problem is that I need to move a moderately complex system from an old system to a new system. The old system is a core 2 duo running on an asus p5k-se (p35 chipset) M/B, Nvidia 8500 gt, 3 x sata II hard disks, 1 x sata dvd, 1 x ide hd, 4GB ram. It runs opensuse 11.1 kde 4 as a desktop system + samba server, apache server, database server + other non-opensuse software. In addition some of the opensuse software is not the default 11.1 versions as later versions were required. The nvidia driver is from the nvidia repo. There are several file systems, some under LVM.

The new system will be a core5 760, asus p7p55d-e M/b (p55 chipset), nvidia 240, 3 x sata II HD, 1 x sata dvd, 4GB ram and possibly 1 x ide HD. This M/B also includes USB 3 & sata III. I have no USB 3 devices but this may eventually change. I have no plans for sata III and believe that it may be better to attach any sata III SSD to the sata II bus.

What I would like to do is to move the hard disks from old system to the new system. What I would like to know is, if the system is left at 11.1, is the system likely to work with the new hardware. If the answer is no, if the system was upgraded to 11.3, would the transfer of the hard disks then work? In order to upgrade from 11.1 to 11.3 using the DVD i believe I should get rid of all non-default repos. I assume that I should also get rid of anything that was installed from them, e.g. the nvidia driver and any software versions installed manually outside RPM. Also is there any default 11.1 software that should be removed either before or after the upgrade to 11.3

Ubuntu :: System Is Updated But Desktop Looks The Same

Sep 4, 2010

I have updated Ubuntu all the way to 10.04, but the desktop environment still keeps its old looks. For example, the GNOME panel has the old, light grey colour rather than the new, dark grey. The new greyscale icons for battery and wireless aren't in place either.

What shall I do to bring it up to date either immediately or when 10.10 comes out?

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot 11.4 On Dualboot Nvdia G7600 Based System - Fresh Install "system Console Stolen At Line"

Apr 22, 2011

I tried to update one of my home machines with a fresh install. This is far from new to me so I did not expect any problem. But I was proven wrong. First: did install the system as usual. First anomaly: system blocked during the install process but did restart it flawlessly one I tried to eject the DVD from the player. It needed actually that intervention to retake working. It then went to install and froze during the first system start. I rebooted with failsafe settings, it then correctly configured. I reached a beautiful desktop. I performed the updates from the update repository and I joined the nvidia proprietary driver repository (which updated to the G02 driver).

I then rebooted the machine and now I am in trouble. In normal mode the system (dual boot Opensuse, XP) does not boot at all and freezes immediately after hitting enter as before. In safe mode it goes further but does not reach X anymore. It blocks with the following line statement: "system console stolen at line 266". I then tried "startx". But the system goes into a scrolling loop that does not allow me to read the output. how to get at least the error message of the loop? I read some line passing by that the system might have an X11 authorization problem.

OpenSUSE Install :: Reformat Computer And Install 11.2?

Jul 22, 2010

At the moment I've got dual-bootable machine with WinXP (25GB on hard disk) and openSUSE 11.2 (20GB on hard disk). After saving the important files on my ~/home I want to wipe off all data from both my partitions and then install WinXP (with 15GB) and openSUSE 11.2 with 30GB. The problem is I'm not sure how to go about doing this? I'm guessing the problem will be the boot process. I installed openSUSE on a machine that already had WinXP and I didn't change any boot settings so it must still be controlled by XP. So presumably I'd have to:

1. Remove openSUSE first and then remove XP using the XP CD.
2. Install XP again
3. Install openSUSE on another partition as I did before but with different partition sizes.

Or should I install openSUSE first before XP? I think I'm more confident on installing XP first since I've already done it earlier. The only other complication is that this is my 'laptop' screen is broken so I use an external monitor. This is what prevented me from formatting my computer earlier.

Thanks.
