Fedora :: Updated System, Now Can Not Boot Into Runlevel 5?

Aug 6, 2009

Booting into runlevel 3 and then issuing the $init 5, command leaves me this."binary handler for windows applications already registered" and the system hangs there.I yum removed wine, thinking that might be the issue, but that solved nothing.

General :: Getting A Text Console Runlevel In Kubuntu 10.04 (Changing Runlevel Won't Work)?

Sep 4, 2010

runlevels 2 -5 are identical in Ubuntu. /etc/init/rc-sysinit.conf is used instead of /etc/inittab for changing the runlevel. But there's no point doing that since the runlevels are identical. The default runlevel is 2, so I tried to find some service I could disable in /etc/rc2.d. I didn't find anything I could work with.

Fedora Hardware :: Brother MFC 5460CN Not Print On Fully Updated F12 System

Apr 5, 2010

I am unable to get a Brother MFC-5460CN printer to print on a fully updated F12 system. Everything looks normal in Administration | Printing. All fields match the format shown on the Brother site. The printer status is updating correctly so there is communication to the printer. But jobs just queue and eventually show as printed but nothing is actually printed. There are no other printers. Here is the output in /var/log/messages from plugging in the printer and trying to print a document:

Code:
Apr 4 21:23:34 localhost kernel: usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 4
Apr 4 21:23:34 localhost kernel: usb 2-2: New USB device found, idVendor=04f9, idProduct=01b7
Apr 4 21:23:34 localhost kernel: usb 2-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=0, SerialNumber=3

Apr 4 21:23:34 localhost kernel: usb 2-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice .....

I followed the instructions on the Brother Linux drivers page and all the rpms loaded without error. But the log is showing some type of key problem.

Fedora Servers :: Check In Dates Getting Changed / Updated To System Time

Jun 21, 2011

I am using the default CVS available in Fedora 9. I initiated the CVS server by
cvs -d /usr/local/cvsproj init
To check-in and check-out the following exports commands are used
export CVS_RSH=ssh
export CVSROOT=:ext:swathi@SERVER:/usr/local/cvsproj

I shall explain problem by taking an example. A project was checked in long before (for example the checkin date is 25 Feb 2010). And today (i.e. 21 June 2011) I checked out the project from the repository. After checkout, the date of the project in the repository is changed from 25 Feb 2010 to 21 June 2011. This date is set to all the subfolders in that project. But the files in the project retains the checking date i.e. 25 Feb 2010. Why the check-in dates are getting updated/changed to the system time after doing check-out.

Ubuntu :: Boot Hangs On "Stopping Save Kernel Messages" Or "stopping System V Runlevel Compatib?

Boot of a new minimal system hangs on "Stopping save kernel messages" or "stopping system v runlevel compatibility". I have ubuntu minimal iso x86_64 from usb stick created with unetbootin (don't have a cd drive on the machine in question), and after that I didsudo aptitude install gnome-terminal network-manager-gnome gdm geditsudo rebootnever got a system back. Annoyingly I can't boot into the recovery mode either, and it seems the keyboard is only semi-responsive (i.e. many dead keys when at the grub menu).qualms about reinstalling, but I've done this a few times and ended up at the same place every time.

Fedora :: Updated Fedora 13 - Now Will Not Boot?

Oct 23, 2010

Today I upgraded a few applications per the package updater and now I cannot boot with the latest kernel. It looks like the nvidia driver wouldn't work, I got a [FAILED] message, followed by two [WARNING] messages. Then the Starting atd message displayed and the screen flickered a few times, then froze. I reset with the button on the PC.
I was able to log in using an older kernel: 2.6.34.7-56.fc13.x86_64. The newer kernel that wouldn't load may have been 2.6.34.7-61.fc13.x86_64.

I looked in the boot log and it had the log from the successful log; but, not the one that failed.

Code:
[DnA@DellXPS ~]$ cat /var/log/boot.log
Welcome to Fedora
Press 'I' to enter interactive startup.
Starting udev: udevd[502]: SYSFS{}= will be removed in a future udev version, please use ATTR{}= to match the event device, or ATTRS{}= to match a parent device, in /etc/udev/rules.d/50-euvccam.rules:1

Slackware :: Unable To Boot Directly In Runlevel 1: Bug Or New Feature?

Nov 16, 2009

Sometimes, when I need to affect some quick changes on my box, I boot up in runlevel 1 by adding "single" to my kernel line in the Grub menu. I use Grub because I also have Vista+RHEL+CentOS for operational reasons and then Slack for everything else.Since I upgraded to Slack13 I noticed that this was not working. I assumed that it was because I had installed on a encrypted LV, so I tried it on VirtualBox installs. I tried both on GRUB and LILO on the Virtual Slack. I tried both the 32 and 64 bit versions. It does not work.

I don't enter the Grub screen when I boot, and I wonder if there's another way to boot into runlevel 3. At one point, I'm prompted to type "I" to enter interactive mode, but doing this repeatedly still boots me into the GUI.

Fedora :: Cannot Get Back Automatically To Runlevel 5

Feb 3, 2010

Running 64-bit Fedora 10 with original installation runlevel being 5.

So, there was this need for working with runlevel 3 for some days, then I've edited "/etc/inittab", changing line

id:5:initdefault:

for line

id:3:initdefault:

And the system went well, restarting automatically on runlevel 3.

Now it needs to restore its original runlevel, that is 5.

I've edited "/etc/inittab" to its original state but the system keeps starting on runlevel 3.

Also, I've tried

# init 5

and

# telinit 5

Both commands load X and the login screen but then when it restarts, it gets back to runlevel 3.

What can be done to get this system back to runlevel 5, automatically, during its INIT process?

Fedora :: 14 Runlevel 3, Logout From X Does't Work?

Dec 24, 2010

i performed an upgrade from fedora 13 to 14 on my test fedora virtual machine (vmware player 3) and i have this incredible problem: I normally boot in runlevel 3 and i start X only when needed with the startx command. When I want to exit from the X environment I use the "log out <username>" command on the System menu (gnome is the desktop manager). After upgrading to fedora 14 and applying all the available upgrade, this won't work anymore! I'm able to start the X environment but when I try to logout the window/desktop manager got killed but X remain active, the background image is visible on the screen, no mouse or keyboard interaction is possible.

The system is stiil alive, i can login through ssh, but i was not able to do anything. manually switching the runlevel from 3 to 5 and viceversa with telinit doesn't solve the situation: switching to runlevel 5 cause the login screen to be visualized and i' can login in the gnome desktop environment but when i logout o when a try to switch to runlevel 3 I always obtain the same result: X remain active and unusable, it's impossible to go back to a text console. what can i do ? any of you has experienced a similar issue ?
