Ubuntu Networking :: Wlan Card Is Not Working Any More

Dec 25, 2010

I'm a new user of Ubuntu and I think I need some help but let me mention before that I got this up working on a Debian system. My current kernel version is $ uname -r 2.6.32-27-generic.The problem is that my wlan card is not working any more such that my system freezes every time I enable networking with the hardware switch on my laptop. Therefore I bought a USB - WLAN stick and try to get this working.

Network Manager has the option "enable wireless" greyed out if I disable the hardware switch. If I enable the hardware switch and remove the module of my wlan CARD before (modprobe -r iwl3945) it says "wireless disconnected" for all networks.

Ubuntu Networking :: WLAN Card Stopped Working - Cannot Obtain IP Address

Sep 9, 2010

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 on a Lenovo ThinkPad T61 using an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG. My laptop's ability to connect to a wireless network stopped last night, and I'm not sure why. It's definitely something on my end, as my roommate can connect to the internet on a Windows box. I can wire in without a problem, but that's a pain and my Ethernet cable got lost in the shuffle when I moved back to school. I've been able to get into this network before and nothing about it has changed. I've been able to hibernate and restart and such and nothing has ever needed to be reset.

The router's a D-Link WBR-2310. Wicd and Network Manager see the network (I'm back to using wicd) , but wicd appears to get stuck at "Obtaining IP address..." and says "Unable to connect: Cannot obtain IP address". I know my password is correct (I set up the router and I'm the CS undergrad in the apartment so I manage it), lspci sees the wireless card, ifconfig and iwconfig return information about the interface, dmesg|grep wlan0 doesn't seem to have anything terribly out of the ordinary, but here's that output:

Code:
allyanncah@taliesin:~% dmesg | grep wlan0
[ 23.514202] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready
[ 36.609016] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready
[ 38.756143] wlan0: direct probe to AP 00:24:01:cb:4e:7e (try 1)
[ 38.758791] wlan0: direct probe responded
[ 38.758796] wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:24:01:cb:4e:7e (try 1)
[ 38.760587] wlan0: authenticated
[ 38.760609] wlan0: associate with AP 00:24:01:cb:4e:7e (try 1)
[ 38.763318] wlan0: RX AssocResp from 00:24:01:cb:4e:7e (capab=0x431 status=0 aid=1)
[ 38.763322] wlan0: associated
[ 38.765502] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): wlan0: link becomes ready .....

I've tried:
- reinstalling wicd
- uninstalling wicd and installing network-manager
- restarting
- shutting down and booting back up
- restarting the router
- sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
- taking the interface down and back up with ifconfig

I haven't changed anything recently in regards to my wireless card, and all the fixes I've tried are things I've done before without an issue. The only thing I'm wondering about is if doing a hard reset might have broken something (I know this is a cardinal sin, but there's a whole 'nother problem I haven't been able to fix with the OS hanging every once in a while over a VPN daemon when it tries to shut down or restart -- I've left it for hours to see if it actually gets anywhere and no luck, won't do a soft reset). I'm nervous about reinstalling the driver just because I've never had to do it and drivers are a finicky business. I imagine there's a config error somewhere?

Ubuntu Networking :: How To Bridge A Wlan Card In Managed Mode

Feb 3, 2011

ifconfig wlan0 0.0.0.0
ifconfig wlan1 0.0.0.0
brctl addbr mybridge
brctl addif mybridge wlan1
can't add wlan1 to bridge mybridge: Operation not supported

It doesnt work, because wlan1 is in managed mode. But Windows 7 can bridge 2 Wlan cards when one is AP and another one is STA. How to do it in Linux?

Ubuntu Networking :: Dell WLAN Card - Ethernet Port Does Work

Jul 28, 2010

I have a Dell WLAN 1397 Half Minicard, 802.11 b/g card in my laptop, and I can't seem to get ubuntu to work with it. I tried this method:

1. Synaptic Pack Manager
2. Check "Install from Boot Disc"
3. Reload
4. Install and apply bcmwl-kernel-source
5. Reboot

This didn't work for me, so I tried entering sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source and that also didn't work. Another thing I tried is formatting my Ubuntu partition and reinstalling, and retrying both of those methods. The ethernet port does work, however.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wlan Has Stopped Working?

Jun 30, 2010

I have a Thinkpad T400 notebook that dual boots windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.04. My wireless has worked both in windows and ubuntu for the past several months. However 2 days ago, the wireless in ubuntu stopped working. I think this may be a result of trying to set up a static eth0 connection between my laptop and an embedded board, but I dont see how messing with eth0 would stop the wlan from working.

Symptoms: When I left click on the network connections icon in the tray, all it lists under "Wireless networks" is "device not ready". Needless to say, there are no networks available to connect to. Also the wireless is working fine under windows.

Vista is still working fine although I did get a couple of "WLAN controller has stopped working" errors. I suspect I may have a physical problem with the controller but I'm confused as to why Vista is still using it but Linux is not. The actual physicall "WIFI" light on the laptop does not even illuminate when I boot Linux. No wireless networks appear in the network list under Linux. It is most likely caused of the missing " Firmware " / Driver for my WLAN Card ( Internal ) . Currently I use Ubuntu 10.10 but I tested 10.04 too before 10.10 and it found my Card but not the Button .

So I want to know if there is any solution for my problem .

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Adapter Not Working After Wlan.conf Update

Jan 19, 2011

I updated Ubuntu to 10.04 after which I noticed the wireless indicator lights on my HP laptop were continually flashing between blue and orange and network performance seemed slow. I did some searching and found and implemented the following change to stop the flashing:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/wlan.conf

Copy and paste the below line:

options iwlcore led_mode=1

Since making this change the wireless connection is shut off and I can;t get it to work at all. I first tried simply to remove the change to get back wher I was, but I can;t do that. Can sopmebopdy toell me at least how to get rid of this wlan, conf file ( it was created by the above command) so I can start over?

Coincidentally since making this change my Windows Vista OS fails to start because of errors attributed to a software or hardware change, of which there were none other than the Ubuntu wlan.conf change. . It may be unrelated but I am suspicious of the coincidence. I am running Vista and Ubuntu in a dual boot configuration and all ha run very well until I did the Ubuntu wlan.conf change.

I am now attempting a complete recovery of my Vista system, since it seems irreparably broken. Again coincidence or not?

CentOS 5 Networking :: Error "SET Failed On Device Wlan0 ; Operation Not Supported' When Configuring D-Link Wlan Card

Nov 15, 2009

I have a desktop that has a d-link DWL-520 wireless card, which was working under Windoze. Today I installed Centos 5.4 on the system , which went cleanly. I then used Network Configuration to set up the wireless card. I specified to use DHCP, set the SSID and authentication password. When I tried to activate the card I get these error messages

Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported. Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. Determining IP information for wlan0.

The hardware manager seems to have correctly identified the card and chipset, (Intersil Prism 2.5) and installed driver hostap_pci which came with the distro. This web site seems to suggest that this is the correct driver: [URL] searching forums I've found a few references to these errors, but they were from several years ago, and for different distros and cards. I did find a reference to using Network Manager to configure the card instead of Network Configuration. I started the NM service and configured a connection using it instead, but still no luck.
