I'm running Ubuntu Server 11.04 (no desktop installed). I'm wondering how I install the necessary support for Japanese text because I have numerous files with Japanese file names and they all show up as garble. I would also like Icecast to broadcast the proper song names with Japanese characters.

Both systems have Japanese language support enabled, but I am unable to read the Japanese file names from the FAT32 partition when using Ubuntu.
I've been looking for a way to add Japanese language support to Debian. I need to be able to type and read Japanese for school. I've asked my Linux professor, and he wasn't sure of how to do it... =p
Edit: I've just figured out how to do this. (All you have to do in install a Japanese font). The only problem is I can't seem how to figure out how to type using Romaji and have it convert to Kana automatically, rather than having it have a Japanese keyboard layout. For example, when I type "A", it should show up as ア, and when I enter "KA" it should show up as カ.
It features a built-in player and a channel guide with the ability to bookmark favorite channels. Currently the only available language is English, but I'm working with a few people to try and bring support for Japanese and Chinese as well. View 1 Replies View RelatedActually I want to log a bug but I don't really know what package to log it against. The problem is that by default Pango is choosing the AR PL UMing CN as the font to render Japanese text when the current font doesn't have Japanese glyphs. But AR PL UMing CN is a Chinese font, so Chinese glyphs for kanji characters (e.g., 覚) are displayed. This is jarring and confusing for Japanese readers.
This situation mostly arises when you have mixed English and Japanese text. Some applications (for instance Firefox) will allow you to select a font for Asian text. Thus if the text contains only Asian characters it will use the font you select, rather than what Pango would have selected. But if it is a mix of English and Japanese, you end up with the wrong glyphs.
Other environments (like gnome-terminal, or a gedit) have difficulties as well. Since the primary interface requires mono spaced roman characters you run into difficulty selecting fonts. Most Japanese fonts only have proportional roman characters. This means that if use a nice roman font and use Japanese text (for instance file names), you end up with Chinese glyphs. What I want is a mechanism that will work across all of Gnome for selecting the font I want to use for Chinese characters. That way I can choose either Japanese or Chinese glyphs.
I realize this is low priority. It only bugs me a little, but many of my Japanese colleagues are put off from using Ubuntu because they are confused by the Chinese glyphs that pop up on my screen from time to time. As I said, I'd like to file a bug, but I'm not sure against what package...
I use the below perl program csv2xls.pl can convert a csv to xls file , it works fine , but I found that it only work for all English characters , I tried to use it to convert a csv file ( with Japanese characters ) , it does work , I also tried the perl "unicode_utf16_japan.pl" , it also did not work , can advise what can i do ?
View 13 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to Ubuntu 11 and a few days later my ecryptfs filesystem began misbehaving in a weird way. In my home directory, many subdirectory names are duplicated verbatim. Here's an ls -F excerpt:

I can no longer access files in those directories (if I ls the directory, it appears empty; I can cd to it, but there's nothing inside). Not all of the directories are duplicated/damaged like this, but most are. A few non-directory files are also duplicated in this fashion, so for example:

Anyhow, I am downloading them using Internet Download Manager running in an XP virtual machine in VMWare on my Ubuntu 10.04 PC (due to the queuing, restart and speed capabilities of IDM). But I digress - the files are being saved on the host (Samba share) without a file extension. So I have a collection of files with names like

This of course does not work in Linux. I have researched the Linux rename command and reviewed a lot of examples. However, I have not found a way to add an extension to a batch of files which are named with no extension to start with. The spaces in the file names also seem to present an issue. At the moment I am renaming them from the Windows VM while they are sitting on the Samba share using the ancient File Manager program from Windows NT which works great on XP. I have experimented with the file rename facility in Gnome Commander however, it does not seem to want to do something so simple.
I would like to use the command line to compare two directories against each other. I have two folders called music collection that have evolved over the last year on two separate computers. 90% of the two folders are the same, but there are small differences. I would like a solution that will print out all the differences so I can analyze them and choose what I want to do with them, before merging the two folders. for example.I would like some kind of output that shows the differences and where its located.
comparing MusicCollection1 and MusicCollection2
dif1.mp3 located in MC1/folder1 (this one I might want to keep and merge over)
dif2.mp3 located in MC2/folder3 (while this one I might realize does not exist in both folders because I deleted it for a reason)
I've looked at sort, uniq, and even tried scripting my own solution, but haven't come up with an elegant solution thus far. Its important that it is recursive because there are about 15 folders in Music collection and more folders under those 15.
I have bash script for converting files. I have a problem. If file name is "corrupted" then mv command for that file will not work. For example file with "-" in front of the name.
Is there a way to check if in some folder (subfolder) all the files have correct file names or they don't?
If they are all correct -> OK proceed with execution of the script!
If they are not all correct -> NOT OK stop with execution of the script!
I use the command line frequently to navigate my files so I try not to have spaces in file names. Typically I have used an underscore to connect words but it was recently suggested that I should use a dash. Are there any disadvantages to using an underscore in file names?Should I switch to a dash? My system is running Xubuntu and I almost exclusively use the bash shell.

I know I can use something like awk, but that's usually substituting one thing for another. How can I get it to modify the names in a column in a csv file and swap the order? code...
I would want to switch "Tanaka Hiroto" to read "Hiroto Tanaka". There's about 500-600 names in the list, so doing this using CLI would save a lot of time.
Anybody know of a way to search only for similar case sensitive files? By which I mean doing a wildcard search across a drive & the only results are like: Abc.txt abc.txt VID_001.avi Vid_001.AVI .. etc.
I've already tried searching the forums & google but the closest I've found is regarding files with increasing numbers (music_001.mp3, music_002.mp3, etc), which doesn't quite fit with my issue, as they would be seen as different files on a case insensitive OS.
Atleast I think it's a terminal program. I remember several years ago while using Redhat 7 when working in the terminal it would automatically complete the pathnames and filenames for you. If I was typing in the terminal "cd downloads" but I only typed "cd do" it would automatically complete my command with "cd documents" but if I continued to type "cd dow" it would know that I don't mean the documents folder and it would know the only other folder path with a dow in it is downloads. I'm not sure if my description is 100% accurate but I think you get the idea. Ubuntu doesn't seem to have this by default and I'm curious if I can get it. Is it a terminal program/client I need to use, or just an option? I don't know what it's called so I've had a hard time googling for it!

View 4 Replies View RelatedTotem by default shows some sort of tags (if found) and not file names in the playlist. I don't like this, because I use Totem for video only and videos I get from the web usualy contains URLs and other such nonsense in the tags so I never know which file is which.
Can I somehow force Totem to always display file names?
I am running gentoo openbox(rox file manager and desktop) I installed Digikam and Amarok. But I have problems with files which include special character in their names(such as �,�, �,ğ... ) The files are shown with strange and weird characters in the file dialogs of Digikam and Amarok.
I don't have this problem in other applications. I can create files with special character included. I think some settings do not agree with KDE4. How can I solve this problem? Does anyone have an idea? I also installed KDE systemsettings program but could not find a relevant config option for character encoding.

I've found that making a for loop does not work with files that contain a space in the name. Something to due with a bug that they call a "feature" that stops the first variable at the first whitespace.
Using a "while" loop is not exactly what i require either seeing as I want to be able to view each image in the directory on screen and tag it accordingly, before it jumps off to the next image, and I'm not sure how to add a pause to a while loop.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been enjoying using Rhythmbox to rip a stack of CDs. Initially I had problems getting it to recognise Lame but following uninstalling and reinstalling it, it seemed to be working well. That is, until I looked in my Music folder.
It turns out files have been placed in individual folders, named "number - title.udio" (e.g.: "11 - She Can Do What She Wants.udio". The mp3 file itself is named identically throughout - it's the string for the gstreamer settings, i.e. "x-raw-int,rate=44100,channels=2 ! lame name=enc preset=1002 ! xingmux ! id3v2muxmp3".
The settings within Rhythmbox's properties for folder and file naming are all set to the sensible default. This is a pain. In the short term I'm going to try EasyTAG to sort it out, but ultimately I need to sort this or find alternative software.
we have two work computers, one with windows and one with Ubuntu. We are going to change the windows computer to Ubuntu, and put them on a network. So we copied all of the documents on the windows computer to the Ubuntu computer as a first step. The problem is, with the documents and folders that we copied, if they have spanish accents we can't open them.I tried looking on the forum but I didn't find anything about exactly that problem. One post suggested that the "locale" might be the problem, but our locale seems to be the correct one for our country and language.
The accents show up as white question marks inside a black diamond. If I open a file inside a folder with an accent, or a file with an accent, it tells me that the file doesn't exist.But when I change the name of the containing folder or the file, and replace the question marks with accents, I can open the folders and files.But we have lots and lots of documents, and it would take a really long time to change the name of all of the folders and files. How can I fix all of them at the same time?
Actually i am working on an application in which i want to select the files from a File Chooser where the application language is set to Telugu. But when i want to view the files through the File Chooser, all the names of the files in the system are displaying as boxes. This problem occurs only when i change the language to Telugu.This problem doesn't appear with any other languages. So please direct me towards the solution for this problem.
