View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using Sendmail 8.13.8 on a CentOS 5.5 vServer (Virtuozzo). I'm using a loop in PHP to send a lot of HTML-mails via sendmail. Each mail is a mail with individual statistics for our users, so its not mass mailing, bcc is not an option. It all works fine, but when I take a closer look there is a problem heading our way with a high number of mails: For each mail sendmail opens up 43 files. Sometimes these open files get closed again very fast, sometimes not.
Here is an example using the PHP-script below, it sends 20 mails in a loop:

This is the worst case. The number of open files (lsof | wc -l) used to send the 20 mails is 860 => 43 open files per mail. Sometimes the files are closed very fast, so I get results like this, too:

END: number of open files: 2242
This shows 129 (3 * 43) open files, so the open files for 17 send mails are already closed, for 3 mails the 129 files are still open. In the worst case and with lots of mails our server crashes, the numfile limit of 8192 in user_beancounters is reached (our ISP won't give us more than 8192). Sendmail DeliveryMode is background. Could it be that sendmail tries to send lots ob mails asynchronously and uses 43 open files for each?
I'm only depending on sendmail to deliver the mails, normally I wouldn't dare to touch the sendmail config (like 'if you don't know what you're doing, don't!'). It is not a problem of PHP. I verified this by sending mails via SMTP localhost to sendmail (opened 43 files per mail) and sending mails via SMTP to an ISP-relay (did not open any files per mail). This is the code for test-mail.php:

The app in linux server(CentOS 5.3) uses files from a mount directory(Shared windows directory in read only mode). At the same time, the same file might be edited by user in windows env. We were assuming that as the windows folders are mounted in read-only mode in linux so any change done by user in windows environment would be fail safe i.e. can be safely committed to the file. But when the file concurrently used both by Linux and as well by windows, at some point linux does not release the file handles and the files get corrupted(deleted too). Earlier we were using win2k server and this step was hardly reproducible and win2k was releasing file handles quickly. But with centos, we really had touch time managing files.

So far my search has yielded no results. It would not be that big of a deal as I could always look at the dhcp file, but it is generated dynamically (3rd party application using RADIUS and each user gets a host).

I can no longer access files in those directories (if I ls the directory, it appears empty; I can cd to it, but there's nothing inside). Not all of the directories are duplicated/damaged like this, but most are. A few non-directory files are also duplicated in this fashion, so for example:

I am supposed to take some small files, and print them to a specific printer, such that the small files are concatenated into one file. The file name has to be included in the file that gets printed.
Should I be looking to concatenate the files into one file with the file names included, and then print them?

On one of my Samba shares on my server I have a folder of mp3 files of my CDs. The one I am having an issue with is "Clarence Carter/Dr. C.C." (yes, the one with the ULTIMATE party song). The "Dr. C.C." folder name is normal locally on the server, but across Samba it comes out "DMOU3A~H". It's definitely Samba doing it, because I get the same result whether accessing the share from Linux or Windoze. I can still access the folder this way, but it would be nice to not have Samba mangle the folder name this way. I am using Samba 3.4.2 on an Athlon64 X2 system running Slackware64.

Anyhow, I am downloading them using Internet Download Manager running in an XP virtual machine in VMWare on my Ubuntu 10.04 PC (due to the queuing, restart and speed capabilities of IDM). This of course does not work in Linux. I have researched the Linux rename command and reviewed a lot of examples. However, I have not found a way to add an extension to a batch of files which are named with no extension to start with. The spaces in the file names also seem to present an issue. At the moment I am renaming them from the Windows VM while they are sitting on the Samba share using the ancient File Manager program from Windows NT which works great on XP. I have experimented with the file rename facility in Gnome Commander however, it does not seem to want to do something so simple.

I am running an application that requires use of my /etc/hosts file. In it, I have my machine name and its LAN ip address. The program creates a service on a specific port, then attempts to connect to it based on the host name. So my hosts file has to be correct.I added the nameservers to resolv.conf and now my application will not run. My guess is that the computer is checking the name servers first, timing out then checking the hosts file.Is there a way I can tell the system to check the hosts file first, then DNS. I thought it should behave that way by default, but it does not appear to.

What i want to be able to do is create a custom kickstart for my centOS 5 server. I want to create a bootable cd that I can pop in my server and basically walk away for 45 minutes and I come back and its fully installed. All the directions I have read so far tell me that I have to create a seperate ks.cfg and then I need my original centos cd to get it booted. Then the cd will ask for where the ks.cfg file is and I have to type the location. I just want to pop the CD in and type in linux_clean or something and have it perform a custom install based on the information and specification in my ks.cfg. How can I go about doing this?

I have two folders called music collection that have evolved over the last year on two separate computers. 90% of the two folders are the same, but there are small differences. I would like a solution that will print out all the differences so I can analyze them and choose what I want to do with them, before merging the two folders. for example.I would like some kind of output that shows the differences and where its located.
comparing MusicCollection1 and MusicCollection2
dif1.mp3 located in MC1/folder1 (this one I might want to keep and merge over)
dif2.mp3 located in MC2/folder3 (while this one I might realize does not exist in both folders because I deleted it for a reason)
I've looked at sort, uniq, and even tried scripting my own solution, but haven't come up with an elegant solution thus far. Its important that it is recursive because there are about 15 folders in Music collection and more folders under those 15.

But I have problems with files which include special character in their names(such as �,�, �,ğ... ) The files are shown with strange and weird characters in the file dialogs of Digikam and Amarok.
I don't have this problem in other applications. I can create files with special character included. I think some settings do not agree with KDE4. How can I solve this problem? Does anyone have an idea? I also installed KDE systemsettings program but could not find a relevant config option for character encoding.

I've found that making a for loop does not work with files that contain a space in the name. Something to due with a bug that they call a "feature" that stops the first variable at the first whitespace.
Using a "while" loop is not exactly what i require either seeing as I want to be able to view each image in the directory on screen and tag it accordingly, before it jumps off to the next image, and I'm not sure how to add a pause to a while loop.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWe installed CentOS 5 at our school and are attempting to get 2 simple DNS servers online. These are simple name resolution servers for our network. We installed the needed caching nameserver packages via Yum and all seems to be well, but for some reason when the server is online, it fails to resolve DNS records except when we direct the requests to its 127.0.0.1 (localhost) interface. As for the server specs, the DNS server is running on a Virtual Machine, and the ESXi server has 2 quad-core Xeon CPU's with 48 Gigs of RAM (in short.. hardware is adequate.)

When the box boots up, we can confirm that the named service is running and it resolves DNS records when we direct queries to its localhost address:

What would cause the Named service to not answer DNS queries from the physical IP but only from it's internal IP?
I need to make an ISO9660 file from a directory, but some of the files have names that are logner than 37 characters. I could not find a way to get the long names preserved.
I've tried various ways but in vain. "genisoimage -J -R -U -max-iso9660-names -o tst.iso cdroot" gets most close to the end, but not close enough!
I recently installed the F12, but it cannot correctly show the Chinese file and directory names on a Windows partition with a fat32 file system. What shall I do?
