A little while ago I installed lubuntu 10.04 on a partition on my (somewhat) old sony vaio desktop. It's great, I do love it - only problem is that the DVD drive is not recognised - at least it doesn't show up in the file manager, and isn't listed when I do "ls -l /media".

View 3 Replies View RelatedI deleted all APs in my Wireless Section of network manager. After that, the whole network manager icon disappeared. I added the icon back on the panel, but I don't think its the right one. It doesn't do the two green cicles thing when I connect my ethernet wire in. It also doesn't show any wireless AP when I left click on the icon. It doesn't even have an X mark on the bottom left of the icon when no network is detected
View 1 Replies View Relatedim just getting the hang of ubuntu 9.10, and then all of a sudden 10.04 comes over and screws everything up with the upgrade. i did the upgrade, and now the network manager wont show up in notification areas. any clue as to why? help is greatly appreciated. also, my machine does register that the drivers for wireless card is installed, and when i run lshw -c net command with sudo priveleges, it says it can detect networks, so im confused as hell.

But the problem is when I'm either charging or on battery and I would click on the power manager the menu that pops up shows me the percentage of life remaining but does not give me any indication of how long I have until my battery is dead/fully charged.If I were to open up the Power Statistics window there is no information time to full or time to empty. Both are just empty.

I have two wifi routers. If I stand next to the main one with my laptop I can connect and access the internet no problem. The other router is in my office, and the bridging is messed up, so while I see the essid and bssid using 'iwlist scanning' and nm-tool, I can't connect to it.
Now, my main router's signal still reaches to my office, just not as strong as the borked router in my office. I need to be able to choose which wifi network to connect to without wasting time walking between rooms. I added entries for both in network-manager, but it doesn't show them in the list when I left click the tray icon! How the do I connect to the network I want?
I need to re-format an external drive. All the instructions I have found start with figuring out where the drive is mounted (sda, hda, etc.). However, as soon as my RH Linux machine sees the drive's format (ntfs) it decides it won't even mount it in the first place. Gives me an error message. Also, the drive doesn't show up at all via "df -k". how to convince RHL to be a little more accepting?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI put together a NAS-like device using a 2-slot USB JBOD enclosure and an eBox-3300. I'm using Ubuntu Server 8.04 Hardy as an OS for the eBox. I have two WD EARS drives hat I intend to use in the USB enclosure, one 1TB large, the other 2TB. I managed to install Hardy on the 1TB drive and boot from it. The 2TB drive is preformatted XFS. If I add the 2TB drive in the enclosure, it does not show up in /dev in ubuntu. In the device's BIOS, both drives appear just fine with correct IDs, so I'm guessing the problem is with ubuntu.

My file manager keeps on opening in the taskbar and it will not stop, but no application comes up, only in the taskbar. No icons will show up on my desktop either. When I go to open up the file manager, nothing comes up. Even when I try nautilus or sudo nautilus nothing happens. I read on another forum to use gconf-editor and nothing fixed it. What do I do? I need to have my computer fixed for school. I am running Ubuntu x86 64-bit on a HP Pavilion tx2500z laptop.

Im guessing this is a bug since this didnt happen with Wheezy. When I insert a dvd data disc I do get the file manager option. Strange this is, after inserting the data disc, removing it and then reinserting the dvd-rom I see the option for file manager. How can I get the file manager option to show everytime I insert a dvd-rom? I tried to,create a new option in system setting but man is that stuff confusing.
i,want to be able to browse a dvd-rom movie/video using dolphin when i insert one. I want open with file manager to be one of the choices. I think file manager is the choice.
a friend of mine just given me an old 2004 IBM NetVista 8305 desktop and suggested to use Linux Ubuntu which is something new to me. So i installed it via USB memory stick & it works. After installation of the OS I am impressed with functionality & speed. when i conect the external hard drive via usb it doesn't show & i tried my usb flash disc it showed the same problem. I tried both disk in my laptop (Windows XP) & it works.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI had this corrupted external hdd and so I formatted the main partition on it on windows but messed up in the formatting and ended up having to format the entire thing. I got some weird message about it not being initialized (no not mounted) so I was in compmgmt.msc in windows and right clicked it in device manager and it asked for master boot or GUID I selected the latter and formatted. Worked fine and all for a bit but now it doesn't show up as a drive. I noticed when using compmgmt.msc it showed up that it had installed driver software and was being recognized but in the partition editing area there was nothing on this drive, reinstalling driver software doesn't seem to help. Also GParted wont load up when I have it plugged in and Disk Utility doesn't show it. I am requesting help to fix this problem within Ubuntu 10.10 somehow so I can use it properly.
View 9 Replies View Relatedwe have installed vignette software on the linux box and would like to uninstall it. To uninstall it we need to delete one file named vpd.properties. When we used locate vpd.properties, the file is found in 2 places. But when we used the ls -a in those locations the file is not seen. basically we want to remove that file. If we do rm vpd.properties, this also doesn't work. Also when we used find -H vpd.properties the file is not found. What is wrong here. I am sure the file vpd.properties will be added to file system as part of vignette. Can anyone suggest what could be wrong here.We logged in as root user to remove this file. Installation is done twice using root and vignette user ids. Thats why file is located in 2 places.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu a few weeks ago on a spare laptop (on a Serial ATA Samsung 500500JI). It was my first experiment outside the Windows and Apple OSs and all went well. However, I need the hard-drive (and more specifically the files on it) on a new Windows-run laptop. I have attached the hard-drive via a caddy to both a Windows and an Apple laptop. Both recognise it as a healthy drive, but neither will allow me to browse the files on it.
I'm a little out of my depth, but I get the sense that it may have something to do with either the file system, or the assigning of a drive letter. I can't currently change the drive letter in Windows 7 using its onboard drive management control panel. All such options are greyed out. I've now put the HDD back in the Ubuntu laptop and am looking at the disk utility, but honestly don't know what I'm looking to do.
Recently I took the internal hard drive from my old desktop PC (Ubuntu 10.04 ) placed it into an external HD Case connected it up to my new desktop PC (Ubuntu 10.04.) and I could access the files on the external HD, that is until this weekend, I now get this error message. Unable to mount 319 GB Filesystem

I've just started out learning to program and I'm making a "Radio Scheduler" for my brother as a mini project. I wanted to make an "install" script, which would add an item to Ubuntu's Main Menu. I believe all that is necessary is to create a .desktop file and place it it /usr/share/applications/? This seemed to work fine when I tried it out on 10.10, but I've now tried it on two 10.04 systems (one virtual) and despite it being in the applications folder (so it moved in okay), it isn't showing up at all in the menu. code...
I'm not entirely sure about some of that (categories for instance), as I just used another file as a reference. But it seemed to work fine on my 10.10 system, so I don't understand why it won't show up on the others? Should be in Sound & Video if I'm correct... I'm still pretty new to Linux, so sorry if I've got anything completely wrong.
I just updated to the new drivers. In my Xorg.0.log file, it doesn't show any errors. It just stop at a black screen. This might be a new bug with the binary drivers.

View 9 Replies View RelatedDistro=Deb 6 Samsung Spinpoint F3 is only recognised as 917GB. I just partitioned it and formatted it. I would normally expect it so say 1024GB (or something close, preferably larger) and after formatting have 900GB free. I almost have 900GB free, so it's not the smaller space that's the problem; it's the math.

917GB - 200 MB != 871 GB
As you can see, this will be used for backups and I want everything working as intended.
I'm reasonably noob to Linux but now seriously confused Installing F11 onto a Dell Precision 490, 4GB RAM and 250GB WD2500YS. I get through to drive partitioning and there is no drive listed. Especially odd as the drive is running F10 quite happily. Reconnect a Seagate Barracuda 500GB and restart, this is seen and is the only drive listed even though it is SATA1 not SATA0. Boot the F10 installation DVD and that recognises both drives! I have tried both AHCI and ATA modes with the same results. Can anyone point me in the right direction or do I go out and get another Seagate drive, no I can't use the existing one.

for example if I want to create a an "Empty File", I'll right-click on desktop and when I want to go to "Create Document" menu, it doesn't show up! so I must click somewhere else and try again so for the second time it works!!

One day, my synaptic and update manager is working fine and the next day, I open one of them and get a error window that doesn't say anything (no details on the error). I come from windows!!! For the life of me, I can't find the (Wine) install environment with the Thunar file manager. For some reason, after i installed wine it doesn't have a link that takes me to the C: drive that Thunar used to open so I could access what I installed thats only compatible with windows, such as World Of Warcraft. I'm bound and determined there has got to be another way to find it!
