so my update manager keeps saying I have updated everything, but it won't show the new 11.04 release. I did everything the documentation says, including change the release upgrade file so its pointed to normal distro upgrades.

I've tried the -d, -c, --check-dist-upgrades, --devel-release, -p, --proposed, and --dist-upgrade. I'm completely up to date on 9.10, but I want to upgrade to 10.04!

It's great, I do love it - only problem is that the DVD drive is not recognised - at least it doesn't show up in the file manager, and isn't listed when I do "ls -l /media".

I deleted all APs in my Wireless Section of network manager. After that, the whole network manager icon disappeared. I added the icon back on the panel, but I don't think its the right one. It doesn't do the two green cicles thing when I connect my ethernet wire in. It also doesn't show any wireless AP when I left click on the icon. It doesn't even have an X mark on the bottom left of the icon when no network is detected
View 1 Replies View Relatedim just getting the hang of ubuntu 9.10, and then all of a sudden 10.04 comes over and screws everything up with the upgrade. i did the upgrade, and now the network manager wont show up in notification areas. any clue as to why? help is greatly appreciated. also, my machine does register that the drivers for wireless card is installed, and when i run lshw -c net command with sudo priveleges, it says it can detect networks, so im confused as hell.

But the problem is when I'm either charging or on battery and I would click on the power manager the menu that pops up shows me the percentage of life remaining but does not give me any indication of how long I have until my battery is dead/fully charged.If I were to open up the Power Statistics window there is no information time to full or time to empty. I have Update Manager set to check for updates on a daily basis but to prompt me before downloading or installing them. Because I have Update Manager set to check on a Daily basis, I expect that I will receive a prompt that an update is available no later than the day after the update is available (assuming of course I have my computer turned on). Yet I only receive a prompt days or even a week after the update was made available.
For example, let's say that my PPA of Google Chrome issues an update on Tuesday. Despite the fact that my ubuntu computer was on for a couple hours in the morning on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, no update prompt appears alerting me to available updates. If I manually open Update Manager on Friday afternoon, then the update is there and waiting for installation. But how come I don't get an automatic prompt that an update is available? Do I have my settings wrong or something?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have two wifi routers. If I stand next to the main one with my laptop I can connect and access the internet no problem. The other router is in my office, and the bridging is messed up, so while I see the essid and bssid using 'iwlist scanning' and nm-tool, I can't connect to it.
Now, my main router's signal still reaches to my office, just not as strong as the borked router in my office. I need to be able to choose which wifi network to connect to without wasting time walking between rooms. I added entries for both in network-manager, but it doesn't show them in the list when I left click the tray icon! How the do I connect to the network I want?

The same issue is in 2.6.38.5 that came out just couple of days ago. Any idea what can be causing this? What info should I add?

I was trying to update the latest files of 10.04. During the update process suddenly my computer hanged. That was a hardware failure and my hard disk lost connection. When I solved it and boot into Ubuntu it just didn't open. A mark is shown on the above task bar that said "A problem occurred when checking for update."

Update Manager wants me to update to Firefox 3.5.7. I'm currently running 64-bit Firefox 3.5.6. I'd like to update, but Update Manager says nothing about this 3.5.7 being the 64-bit version. If I upgrade from the UM, I don't know if I'll be getting 32-bit or 64-bit FF. How can I tell beforehand which one I'll get?

I think the problem is the fact that I've installed a bunch of software from rep's and ppa's via ubuntu-tweak that are more recent than the ones in Ubuntu's rep, but I can't been sure.Also, I've deactivated all third party rep's and ppa's, but I still have a bunch of software installed via those sources.
I'm trying to do an online upgrade from 8.04 to 10.04 using the update manager. Since update manager did not indicate that there was and upgrade, I used the update-manager --devel-release command to initiate the process. The upgrade stops during while looking for channels with the following error message:

E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. I don't believe this to be a network problem because it fails in the same place every time. I don't see the entry for debian-installer in the Release file which I believe is why the error is occuring, however, I'm not sure what to do about it. It seems like something is pointed to the wrong place. I've maintained this system with update-manager for several years and never had a problem.
I was so impressed by the screen-shots of 10.04 LTS that i wanted upgrade via the update manager( am using karmic 9.10).Everything went well with downloading the new packages till the point of installation of downloaded packages. Halfway through the installation power went off and when i restarted the system it was stuck at some point with the message
Code: mount: nothing to mount in /dev or something like that. Then i restarted the system in recovery mode and ran "dpkg" to fix broken packages hoping it would fix the issue.It did to some extent that i was type the problem here through the affected system.
The problem is i couldn't send the crash report the first time around and i can't get hold of it now.My system is somewhere between karmic and lucid ("About Ubuntu" shows as karmic and System Monitor shows it as lucid").So i how do i get a clean installation of lucid?
I'm noticing that maybe twice a month the Update Manager is asking me to upgrade my kernel. Currently it's asking me to move to 2.6.32.24.25. Is this the smart thing to do? Are these primarily securtiy updates to the kernel?

I've provided proxy details in Synaptic Package Manager and also in System -> Preferences -> Network Proxy. I can see any new updated libraries when I check Update Manager, but somehow I do not see the notice of availability of Ubuntu 10.10 and hence not able to upgrade.
On my home laptop (Dell Inspiron 700m) which connects to internet directly and over there I was able to upgrade to 10.10
So I think there is some problem with respect to update manager where it cant see the new release available behind proxy.
