Software :: Can't Get Xvid Videos To Properly Playback On Computer?
Nov 20, 2008I'm using OpenSuSE 11 and even with the xvidcore packages installed, totem-xine, etc., nothing seems to work.

View 1 RepliesI'm having a bit of trouble with playback of a few types of videos and I think I should be able to do this with the hardware I'm not what I would call a power user in Ubuntu so you may have to bear with me. =)
Here's what I'm working with:
CPU: Intel P4 3.40 Ghz
Memory: 3023 MB generally running about 90% free
Video Card: nVidia GeForce 7300GT, 512 MB 350 MHz, driver version 260.19.06
Display: Outputting to an old CRT TV via S-Video cable at 1024x768
I've just moved to Maverick today, I had these same problems with Lucid plus some others that seem to have been resolved in that upgrade. I've tried these files on VLC 1.1.5 and Totem Movie Player 2.32.0 (using GStreamer 0.10.30) and I get the same results in each player.
Here are the details on two files I get this with, and what I see when I try to play them: SYMPTOM: Video seems okay, audio is basically missing - maybe the odd blip but by and large, nothing.

I play a flash video, and then play music natively the sound doesn't work. Or I can play flash and have sound but not play music with sound that's on my PC. Or I play my music on my PC, say one song, and the other is high pitched distorted, and rings. I have to exit the program and start it again for it to play nice. How do I resolve this most irritating bug?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to find a way to watch videos from my main desktop computer on another computer I've plugged into an HDTV. I'm such a Linux newbie that I decided to give Mythbuntu a try. It was way to complicated for what I needed, and I'm sure that some more experienced people reading my first two sentences laughed to themselves at my naivety.
What I am trying to find is simple: browsing one computer's home folder from another computer, and playing the videos therein. If there's anything like Mythvideo that requires less than half of the skill requirements, I will telepathically send love to the person that informs me of it.
Since I upgraded to Lucid Lynx, playing videos with the default player do not work properly. I only see the content while moving the window, or in full screen mode, and in both ways, the picture is distorsioned and with strange colors. Playing it with VLC does work properly ONLY IF I change the video output module to something different as default (X11 works, openGL also) but Linux Framebuffer does not.
The question: Is there a way to change the "default" video mode that Totem (or Kaffeine) use?? I have not found anything on the net with this exact problem.
i just installed ubuntu 10.04 on my imac. i can play videos from videos no problem but when i try and play avi, mov or any other video format, the movie player quickly opens and closes. when i try with vlc player, i see the player bar but no video. when i try with smplayer, i can watch the video but when i go full screen, the movie doesn't take up the whole area of the screen. it stays at the same small size.
what do i need to do to make this right? i installed the ubuntu restricted extras. did i miss something?
I recently got a Canon Powershot SD780 IS. It takes HD video at 780p. It's great, except that the videos won't display properly in Ubuntu Netbook Remix (Lucid) on my Dell Mini 10v.I've tried using Gstreamer (Banshee), Xine (Totem-xine), and MPlayer (GNOME MPlayer). These all should have worked, which makes me think something may be wrong either with the files themselves or my computer. Anyone have any idea what's going on here?FYI, when I pull up the Properties dialogue for one of the videos and look in the Audio/Video tab, it says:
Video
Dimensions: 1280 x 720
Codec: H.264 / AVC

My girlfriend just got the new dell inspirion mini with ubuntu on it, and when she tries to stream videos on her laptop it wont let her it says she needs either a windows comp. or a macintosh, is there any way i can get her computer to stream these videos off netflix?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've bought an used computer with DQ965GF motherboard which includes GMA3000 integrated video, Sigmatel 92XX (from what specs say) audio codec, and CoreDuo processor. Also 1 GB DDR2 RAM.It worked great when I tested it using live Ubuntu 10.04, Compiz worked out-of-the-box, etc.But when I installed and started playing movies, I found problems. Videos pauses from time to time, approx. once a minute (randomly), even when there's no other activity. They pause for a very short moment, half a second maybe, with audio, then resume, usually with 1-2 secs period of slowed down playback (like, trying to get up to speed and sync), then resume normally.
I tested with mplayer and totem, seems to be the same, though on mplayer the effect seems to be less frequent / shorter delays.Can this be video driver? Audio driver? Motherboard issues? BIOS settings? How do I test?The videos that I play are usual DivX AVIs, can't be speed problems. Also, when I replay the paused parts, they do not pause again, so these are probably not movie/hard drive errors.
there are different methods for securing based on home versus professional computers. My questions generally pertains to securing home desktops, but professional protection is definitely welcome :) Knowledge is power. Ever since moving to the wonderful world of Linux a couple years ago, I never even really thought about security. Seeing as most low-life scum make viruses for Windows machines seeing as they're more abundant.But how do I know if I'm safe/secure from anyone who want's to get at me or my stuff. I know that anyone who is determined enough to get in will, there's no question about that. But what steps can I take to ensure I'm protected from things like rogue root shells and automatic attacks? Also, is there a sort of built-in firewall/antivirus in more Linux distros?
I know this question is quite broad seeing as there are tons of ways someone could compromise your system, but maybe you could share what you did to make sure you were safe.I decided to not allow root login via ssh and to change the port is listens on to something random. Hopefully this a step in the right direction. Currently looking at iptables and shutting down services.
Tried restarting my netbook with Karmic on it this morning. Got the login screen and an error message as follows:
Install Problem The configuration defaults for GNOME Power Manager have not been installed correctly.contact your computer Administrator. Then when I click on my user name the system just comes back to the login screen and the same error message. Does this each time I try to login. Can't get it to boot.
I have Ubuntu 9.10 64-Bit. sometimes when i boot the computer, right after the grub loads, a black screen is displayed. It just says my computer's name and "tty1".It lets me enter my username and password. The system takes my password but the black screen remains.For some reason the word "ubuntu" with the loading bar does not appear like it is supposed to in this case. The system does not boot into my destop like it should.
This usually happens 1/4 times when i boot so i didnt pay much attention and would just restart the computer. However just 5 minutes ago i had to boot my computer 12 times to get it to boot into the desktop.
-Ubuntu 10.04 with MPlayer/Smplayer & VLC installed via the repos. -Installed the Ubuntu Restricted Extras package (everything except flash, extra fonts, & java) & w32codec packgae (medibuntu). -Computer in question is 800mhz Celeron, 256MB RAM & one of those basic Intel Integrated Graphics Chip. I'm having problems playing some video files. When trying to play these files with Smplayer, I get a blue screen but can still hear audio (default video output). After switching the video output to x11(slow), I can now see the picture but it's not playable (some video will show maybe one frame every 2 seconds, some video would play for half-a-second then just freeze). This happens mainly with large files (not 100% accurate, but in general files over 300MB).
Mplayer log gives the "Your system is too slow to play this file" & "Bad alloc:insufficient resources" messages. So I'm guessing this is not a codec problem, but a system resources problem? Is there any option, trick, tweaks, etc. I can use to play these problematic files or is it just not possible because of my system specifications? Is there a way I could tell mplayer to play these files with lower bitrates & resolution? Maybe this could reduce the resources needed to play?
ive got a windows partition and a ubuntu-10.10 partition. i just tried to reinstall windows on the first one - but things didn't work out properly. after the first restart the pc just hung in the first boot screen - it wouldn't boot from the windows cd or the harddrive. every time i restart the computer it just hangs in that screen. i can't even choose to boot from cd/usb to use a livecd and rescue my files on the ubuntu partition. its like the keyboard doesn't work anymore. ive tried both a usb keyboard and one of the old kind with the prongs. so i cant get into ubuntu.
here's the screen, it pops up a second after i restart. usually the pc just boots up a couple seconds later and i can choose beteen win/unbuntu; or i can just press 'esc' and choose to boot from usb. but now nothing is happening, the keyboard doesn't seem to work, and it wont go passed this screen.*edit* actually the keyboard is working, because ctrl-alt-del restarts the computer, but thats about it..
I've been researching this for awhile now and cannot find anything that works. I'm trying to watch videos in a browser, either Chrome or Firefox, that are encoded with Xvid. Nothing has worked, and when I try to watch an Xvid video I get the following error:
"We're sorry, our content is not compatible with your computer configuration."
I've installed vlc, libxvidcore4, gecko-mediaplayer, ubuntu-restricted-extras, and numerous other libraries, none of which do anything.
I downloaded a movie and it came with two folders cd1 and cd2 containing many Xvid files. How do I make this movie watchable?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently downloaded a movie and it was in XVID format. When i tried to play it with vlc it played a small message that you need an xvid player that needs to be downloaded from a particular website... Then I tried to search for the missing plugins and i even found some and downloaded and installed but it did not work . the file which i downloaded was a 600 mb. then i switched to windows to play the file and it automatically opened the website and asked to purchase the xvid player.I even ttried to convert it to avi or mp4 format using avidemux but did not work.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI need a way to batch convert 720p video files from avc1 to xvid in Ubuntu 10.04. I'm not terribly concerned about file size, but I do wish to retain the picture quality as much as possible. I believe the audio is encoded as aac, which is fine for my purposes.
What would be the best and easiest way to do this? I've tried using Handbrake. During my first attempt, I had it using ffmpeg to convert to MPEG-4, but that just gave me a super-low quality video at twice the file size. Trying h.264 now, so we'll see how that works out. But just in case it doesn't pan out so well, what other ways do you recommend?
I was thinking I'd write a bash script to reencode the files one by one, but the problem is that I have very little knowledge about codecs and containers and whatnot - so I wouldn't know what parameters I would pass ffmpeg/mencoder.
i have written a bash script to convert flv files (e.g. videos) to xvid to be played on my dvd player. the conversion is not really the issue, as it works. what i am dealing with now are 2 problems i have not found a good workarouond:
1. surpressing the shell output of mencoder completely ( i do not want to see all the mencoder messages). this i have only solved to a certain extend.
2. i want to create a progress bar. this one i have not yet cracked.
the script:
code:
#!/bin/bash
## settings
v_bitrate=768
video_opts="-ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=$v_bitrate:autoaspect"
audio_opts="-oac mp3lame -lameopts fast:preset=standard"
store_dir=./converted_files .....
#start the script
main_menu
1. mencoder output: using /dev/null works more or less. for example: if mencoder detects a double frame while converting, a message is still printed on the bash screen
2. progressbar: i have no clue yet on how to do this. any link or tip is welcome.
my goal is something like this:
[56%] [time in progress] [timeleft]
I could not watch films or listen to the music.
When I press search codecs got error: Could not find plugin in any configured software source.
The playback of this movie requires a MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) decoder plugin which is not installed.
The playback of this movie requires a XVID MPEG-4 decoder plugin which is not installed.
I like this linux distribution more than the others that i have used, because is more stable for my work. But there are some little problems that I can't solve. I'm using it with a laptop HP G60 and i can run OpenOffice, Mozilla and some other programs (python, grass, qgis) that used for work at the office, but when I go home and want to watch a movie with my girl, listen some music or any other simple task, i find a lot of little problems:
1. Adjust the bright of the screen, the Power Management Guidance don't do it and I really need it.
2. Can't play movies in VLC "No suitable decoder module. VLC does not support the audio or video format XVID. Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this"
3. And today I can't play music because there is a message "KDE detected that one or more internal sound devices were removed" this is: Output HDA Intel, INTEL HDMI 0 (HDMI Audio Output)
I know maybe these problems are stupid but in windows is easier to fix them. I'm tired of search in google because i just find solved problems for Ubuntu and it takes a lot of time.
How can I set up multipath to two devices properly? I'm sure that I need to do something more then just: /etc/init.d/multipathd start
