Fedora :: Get The Desktop In The Gnome Shell?
Jun 29, 2011
Is there any easy way to do that in gnome shell with a key shortcut or setting it up like in gnome2 days with a hotspot?
ctrl + alt + d - should minimise all windows and focus the desktop - but it's not working for me?

Is there any way I can switch my desktop shell from unity to, say, gnome-shell? I can switch using other console shell I like (bash, csh, fish, etc.). Assume that there is a stable alternative desktop shell, I should be able to choose, too.
(For console shell, we goes to /etc/passwd. But for desktop, I can't find the way to config.)

I have lost some icons from my desktop, they are, firefox, yast, thunderbird, emacs, the space and the names are still there, and when I hover the mouse over the space, it is highlighted as it should be. The application opens and runs as normal when I click on the space where the icon should be. The icons are also missing from the favorites bar on the left side and also from the panel top left when the app is running.I have tried, rebuilding the icon cache in 'usr/share/icons/hicolor', and also all othercon caches for that matter, and no difference. I tried uninstalling and installing the app, no differenence. I tried changing themes and icons from Tweak Tool, no difference. As far as I can see the icons are there in the hicolor directory

is there some wiki page on GNOME or Fedora that list which graphics cards work without problems on Fedora 15 with GNOME Shell? I have tried 3 older cards and they all failed, so I would like to share this info with others so people know which cards to avoid if they want to use full features of GNOME 3 via GNOME Shell.

I'm running Fedora 15 with Gnome 3. I installed Gnome-Do using 'yum install gnome-do'. I opened it from the Terminal by typing 'gnome-do' but I keep getting an error message that says
Could not load desktop item: libgnome-desktop-2.so.17
Gnome-Do opens but it doesn't display any application I search for and when I try opening the Gnome-Do preferences, it quits.
I installed gnome-desktop-2.32.0-8.fc16.i686.rpm from here: [url] and then installed Gnome-Do. Everything works fine now.

I'm using F15 and I have big problem. Sometimes GNOME-Shell is taking too much CPU, and my computer is slowing down. This is "top".
Code:
[kuba@Kuba-fedora ~]$ top
top - 16:08:18 up 2:05, 2 users, load average: 0.45, 0.49, 0.43
Tasks: 159 total, 3 running, 156 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 29.2%us, 2.8%sy, 0.0%ni, 67.1%id, 0.5%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.4%si, 0.0%st

I feel like this is a RTFM question, so if anyone wants to just direct me to the right manual, that's fine.
I just installed gnome-shell and i cant seem to find anyway to customize anything, esp. the task bar, the clock, et cetera
is there a preferences gui or something that I cant find? I feel like i'm trying to use a mac....
It seems pretty sweet, but, i dont know how to get used to not having a window list... i dont wanna pull up the "activities window" or alt tab every time i want switch windows (esp when my hand is used to just moving to the top of the screen and clicking on the right window...
There's this autohide taskbar at the bottom of the screen, but i cant for the life of me figure out what it's for, or how to put things on it....

Seems many icon themes still don't really play nice with gnome shell. They work totally fine for the most part, except the tray icons, they like to change them to their own monochrome icons which usually look bad (and most of the time not even all of them are changed). Is there a way to make any icon theme use the default gnome shell symbolic icons? Right now I am using elementary and its mostly fine, but it changed the battery icon to an ugly smaller version. I'd love to be able to change it to the default icon.

I've been googling such terms as "Gnome Shell Developer Reference", etc, and poking around developer.gnome.org; and i can't seem to find documentation on how to code interface elements against the gnome shell for javascript / xHTML / css. Does anyone know where they keep it, or am i completely misunderstanding that aspect of the new gnome hell, in that you only use js to do themes, but not plugins or inteface changes?

Sooner or later you may experience a Gnome shell lock up. After two weeks of daily use I experienced my first one today: the cursor turned to a hand, and no amount of clicking and pressing Esc would have any effect; Windows key didn't bring Activities in focus either. If you experience these or similar symptoms you can restart the gnome-shell in order to unlock the Gnome session:
1) pass to a console (press Ctrl+Alt+F2)
2) log in
3) execute: ps -ef | grep gnome-shell in order to find the gnome-shell process id (PID); the output may look something like
[Code]...
Pressing Ctrl+ALt+F1 (or, if that doesn't work -- Ctrl+ALt+F7) should take you back to the Gnome session. You should see the restarted gnome-shell. (You can now return to the console, log out from the console, and return to the Gnome session).

I'm looking for a feature in Gnome Shell that would allow me to tile all of the open windows on a desktop. Something akin to Fluxbox's ArrangeWindows keyboard shortcut. I know you can tile two windows side by side, but I would need something capable of tiling ALL of them. Does something like this exist, or would I need to look into writing a Gnome Shell extension?

I updated last night and after a reboot I can get the GDM login but as my desktop loads it suddenly stops and complains of an error and won't load. If I load legacy Gnome desktop with Compiz it loads but ALL the lettering and words on the interface are messed up. By this I mean the letters are upside down and the words are spelt backwards. The mouse menus also work in reverse as in the menus themselves are also upside down and the highlighting moves from bottom to top as I move down the menu. Amusing but not what I want from my computer. There is nothing in /var/log/messages or /var/log/Xorg.0.log that would indicate anything is wrong.
I sooo don't want to have to rebuild, again, because of instabilities in F15 updates.

This isn't the first time this has happened and it can get *very* frustrating but when I tried to install gimp today I got:
Code:
Error:
You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest
So I then did a quick
Code:
Is there something I am overlooking here or is the GIMP installation (in)correctly asking for misnamed dependencies? If so, is there a way to report this to the RPM repo to ensure it is corrected quickly?

I am running Fedora 14 on my Thinkpad T410. Tried to see what Gnome 3 shell looks like. So I went to: System->Preferences->Desktop Effects and chose GNOME Shell. Now the bottom and the top pannels are gone. I can see only the desctop and the icons on it. How can I get back to the previous settings? I tried and tried without any luck.

I am trying to theme my Gnome Shell experience, and I have little complaints for the Shell Theme/GTK3 side of things. However, even though there are GTK2 files included in the packages, my GTK2 apps are theme-wise broken. The colors are not on par and the buttons are not round as the theme should say, as it's still supposed to work since the files are provided.

Gedit windows don't aerosnap left or right. They do upwards (to maximize).
Fedora 15, Gnome Shell, enjoying it.
A classical case for "aerosnapping" two windows side by side, in my experience, is a terminal on one side and a HOWTO in gedit on the other side. This allows easy copy and paste.
Anyway, a gedit window doesn't aerosnap left and right (it only heeds to aerosnapping on the top, for maximizing its window).

Not sure if others have noticed this. When I go into sound settings, click the output tab, select the sound device I want to edit and change the bass levels etc, close the window and go back in all the settings are reset to default and no changes are saved.
If I leave the window open and make the changes they are reflected in VLC for example, but if I close the window it again resets to defaults and my Bass is back at Maximum....
Is this a BUG I should report or is there something I can download to get this configured elsewhere or to fix this issue? I seem to recall something similar in Fedora 14 that was fixed, but I cant remember how I did it now

Since I do not like any of shell themes i downloaded, today I decided to remove user theme shell-extension.I removed it from the : Add/remove software, from menu. After logging out, and in, I keep getting : Gnome shell crashed, please log out.I have downloaded few shell themes from gnome look, and they all work.. But did not like them, always used default theme, so I decided to remove extension..
I removed "user theme" extension, but I did not delete "theme selector extension" from ~/.local/gnome-shell/ extensions.I just deleted it's folder from extensions, restarted, and I'm back in my Fedora.

I've only recently started using Fedora a couple months ago. I used Ubuntu for a few years before. I'm posting because I have a strange graphical glitch in gnome shell. For some reason, this glitch did not appear when I was using Gnome 3 with ubuntu, and I didn't notice it on the F15 Live CD.
There appears to be an artifact (looks like a crack) in my shell. It only appears when the icons fade if I'm scrolled down in the applications menu. Similar artifacts appear in the gnome shell notifications, such as the messaging notifications. I have a ATI Radeon HD 3650 graphics card and am using the default drivers. NOT the proprietary fglrx/catalyst/whatever driver. I've attached a pic.

Where do I look to change the calendar preference in Gnome Shell from Evolution to Osmo? I have uninstalled Evolution and installed Osmo. I have looked in all of the settings available in System Settings, Tweak Advanced Settings, Alacarte, and Configuration Editor (gconf-editor), but I am obviously overlooking something.
Is it safe to delete all references to evolution when I find them in gconf-editor? I assume I would have to do that as root since it does not seem like trying to do so as a regular user works.
What I want to do is when I click on the date/time on the top bar and select "Open Calendar", Osmo will open. Right now I just get a message: "Execution of 'evolution' failed: command not found." Of course it would fail since I removed evolution. However, I can't seem to find out where to change it to look for Osmo instead.
