Ubuntu :: How To Use Integrated Graphics Card

Aug 24, 2010

I'm using a lenovo notebook with switchable graphics (Intel HD and ATI Radeon 5650), and I'd like to have Ubuntu use the integrated graphics, but I can't figure out how. The BIOS has two graphics options: switchable and discrete. On discrete just the ATI card runs, but on switchable, it seems like both cards are being used. Is it possible to use just the integrated graphics?

General :: Make PCI-E Graphics Card Visible To Ubuntu When The Motherboard Has Integrated Graphics?

May 2, 2010

I have a Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 motherboard with integrated graphics that shows up on lspci as an ATI Radeon 2100. I also bought a PCI-Express Nvidia graphics card so I could use the VDPAU feature on Linux (plays H.264 in hardware). The BIOS has three settings about which display to initialize first:

Integrated graphics
PCI graphics
PCI-Express graphics (PEG)

I set the BIOS on PEG, but

I cannot get anything, not even a splash screen or POST messages, to emerge from the PCI-Express graphics card. (I'm using a DVI connector; the card also has an HDMI output.)I cannot get the kernel lspci to see the graphics card; the only VGA controller it acknowledges is the integrated one.Running dmidecode acknowledges the existence of an x16 PCI Express slot, and it says

Current usage: Unknown

There is an additional BIOS setting called "Internal Graphics Mode" which is normally set to "Auto" which means it is supposed to prefer a PCI Express VGA card. I set it to "Disabled" which now means I'm getting no output at all. I will soon be learning how to do a BIOS reset!

Other information: The PCI-E card is a MSI N210-MD512H GeForce 210. This is a fanless card. Although there are no fans to see turning, the heat sink on the PCI-E card is definitely getting hot, so the card is getting some sort of power. It gets all its power from the PCI-E slot; there is no external power connector. The BIOS is an AMI Award BIOS.how can I make the PCI Express graphics card visible to Ubuntu?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Get Nvidia Card To Work On Dell With Integrated Graphics?

May 25, 2010

I have a PCI graphics card, Nvidia Geforce FX 5500, but can't get it to work. I have 10.04 installed on a Dell Dimension 3000, P4, 1Gb RAM, integrated graphics. I installed 10.04 without the card in the machine, then shut down and plugged the card in and booted it up again (BIOS setting is 'onboard' for integrated graphics, 8Mb; only other option is 'auto'). Checking the hardware drivers I can see the recommended Nvidia drivers (v173, not yet activated) and lspci gives me the integrated as well as the Nvidia listing:

01:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Nvidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5500] (rev a1)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 8286G Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

So far so good, but that's where it ends. Changing the BIOS setting to 'auto' turns the screen off on reboot, both for the monitor connected to the VGA port of the Nvidia card and for the monitor connected to the VGA port of the motherboard. I have to shutdown, take the card out and set the BIOS back to 'onboard' to be able to boot again (and shutdown, plug the card back in and boot up again to get back to where I was).

Activating the recommended hardware driver and rebooting (still with BIOS set to onboard) gives a blank screen (screen is still on and there may have been a flash of the purple screen with the ubuntu logo); nothing else happens no matter how long I wait. Rebooting doesn't help, it turns off the screen; same result for booting in recovery mode. I can get to the GRUB bootloader and when I replace 'quiet splash' with 'nomodeset' I manage to boot again with the monitor connected to the VGA port of the motherboard, but am not anywhere closer to getting my monitor working on the Nvidea card.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 9.04 Jaunty - Integrated ATI Graphics

May 22, 2010

I have a desktop computer with integrated ATI graphics. Specs below and lspci log attached. I was running 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope until 1 week ago. Everything worked fine from the day I installed it. It's default driver worked fine and graphics requiring applications like Google Earth and Secret Maryo Chronicles (game) ran smoothly. Then about a week or so ago I did a clean install of Lucid on this PC. And now Secret Maryo Chronicles runs choppy and Google Earth doesn't run and display images smoothly. I could understand having problems like this if I were switching to Fedora or something but I'm still using the same distro (and both are recent versions).

Computer Specs:
ATI Radeon Xpress 200 integrated graphics with 256 MB RAM
Intel Pentium 4 clocked at 3.00 Ghz
2 GB RAM (.25 being used for graphics card)
500 GB Hard drive (355 for Ubuntu)

Hardware :: Disabling Broken Integrated Graphics With AGP

Oct 20, 2010

This problem doesn't really have anything to do with Linux, but I've used Linux exclusively for 10 years and this system is Ubuntu bound anyway, (plus i don't trust other forums, always with the windows) so... Basically, my brother's GF's computer has a broken integrated graphics card. Literally. Some of the the solder points have broken, and it just doesn't work anymore. The plan is/was replace it with an Nvidia Geforce N6200 AGP since it has an AGP slot. The rest of the MoBo seems fine.

The problem is I don't know how to switch from the broken integrated graphics to the new AGP. The screen will not come on with the monitor plugged into either of them. Will a bios reset switch them for me (so I can finally fix this damn thing)? Or is a new motherboard necessary?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Display A Full Screen With An Nvidia Integrated Graphics Controller

Nov 5, 2010

I have recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10. However the bottom of the screen is cut off with only a trace of it visible. I had similar problems with version 10.04 where both and top and bottom of the screen were not displayed.

I have noticed that version 10.10 does not use the proprietry driver the previous versions used.

In desparation I have tried Kubuntu but the results are still much the same.

Does anyone have any idea how I can display a full screen with an Nvidia integrated graphics controller.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Unclaimed Display Controller 82852/855 GM Integrated Graphics Device?

Jul 9, 2011

I really wanna use the OS. I wiped my laptop and installed it but I can't change my screen resolution (it's stuck at 1024 X 768 and my refresh rate is at 0 HZ) I tried installing a driver that was for both the i9xx and i8xx chipset family but it doesn't look like it helped anything. I want to be able to play World of Warcraft Wrath of The Lich King but when I try it the way the computer is now the the frame rate is really really slow. I also need to fix my audio because there's crackling that comes from the speakers often. I attached a screen shot of what I get when I enter the command: sudo lshw -c video Changing the resolution isn't the problem so much as the fact that I can't change the refresh rate from "0 HZ" to anything higher so that my game will play smoothly. I would also like to put compiz fushion on my laptop as well but I don't believe it will work unless I resolve this problem.

OpenSUSE Install :: DELL Latitude E6410 - Core I7 M620 With Integrated Intel HD Graphics - Blank Screen

Aug 19, 2010

I have been unable to get both opensuse 11.2 and 11.3 32 bit versions work properly on my DELL Latitude E6410 laptop. With both 11.2 and 11.3 KDE Live CDs I get no graphical display when I attempt to boot into the Live system. VESA mode does not help either, only text mode works. So I installed the system in text mode but during the first boot the screen went blank again.

One peculiar thing is that 11.1 installs and boots fine, what gives? Is this even supported or I shouldn't even try to bother getting this setup to work? Has anyone been able to run opensuse 11.3 on a Core i7 integrated Intel graphics system with X system working?

Hardware :: Integrated Sound Card Not Detected (Ubuntu)

Apr 8, 2010

I have a DFI RS482 mobo with integrated sound. I am making a car puter and only have a 2GB CF card, so I installed a server install of Ubuntu. Then I got xserver-xorg, mplayer, and fluxbox. I downloaded and installed the latest nvidia driver. Mplayer spit out tons of sound errors and that's when I realized the server install has no sound. So I installed the 'alsa', 'pulseaudio' and 'pavucontrol' packages. Now mplayer does not complain and acts like it is playing sound, but nothing happens sound-wise. Pavucontrol shows mplayer as playing sound and the volume as unmuted. However the PCM output is going to "dummy output" and the configuration tab says there are no cards to be configured.

So I think my sound card is not being detected. I don't know what to do at this point.
lspci shows "Multimedia audio controler: ATI Technologies inc. IXP SB400 AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 80)"
alsamixer fails on "function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory"
lsmod | grep 97 returns a bunch of stuff, but I'm not sure what it is.

When I try to setup my Mobile Broadband connection manualy using the Network Connections Manager the device drop-down is grayed out and it doesn't seem like my network card is being recognized as a Mobile Broadband Card. When I had Windows 7 installed and started ubuntu over a USB Drive the connection worked great. I've followed the steps at [URL] too and it all checked out.

I found another idea in a thread here and I've tried that too:
I added the following line to my /etc/modules:
echo b43 | sudo tee -a /etc/modules
I've also tried using the Broadcom STA drivers that ubuntu offers but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Software :: Getting Compiz To Work In SuSe 11.3 (KDE) With SiS 660 Integrated Card

Dec 11, 2010

I just installed SuSE 11.3 (running KDE) and I cannot get compiz to work on it. This is an old laptop with an SiS 660 integrated graphics card which has installed correclty except for the 3D acceleration. I did my homework and looked around before posting this but all I found was this.

1. 3D acceleration for SiS 660 through swrast stopped working when SuSE 11.1 came out [URL] and apparently there's no easy fix for this today. I went to the card manufacturer website [URL] and found no support for SuSE. I tried the mesa drivers and none seemed compatible.

2. I downloaded the compiz repos anyway and followed the instructions in this tutorial: [URL], but it didn't work. So my questions are (a) HOW DO I GET 3D TO WORK FOR THIS GRAPHICS CARD??? and (b) IS IT POSSIBLE TO GET COMPIZ TO WORK WITHOUT 3D ACCELERATION, AND IF SO HOW? I'm an enthusiastic but inexperienced penguinista, so I hope to find an answer to this issue here.
