View 6 RepliesSome people love icons, but not me. I prefer the file list view. I have stumbled around Ubuntu 10.10 trying to find where to set this preference, but have had no success so far. In windows, you would set the preferred view and then apply to all folders. Ubuntu does not follow this paradigm, and indeed, why should it? I have searched the preferences in Ubuntu, and did a global search f this site for related topics. I know you have to be able to do this, I just don't know how. This is the type of topic I will probably kick myself for when someone shows me how easy it is to do. If you don't know how to do it though, it is still black magic.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSomehow i managed to change my file browser to Konqueror from whatever the default is ( i haven't managed to find the name). Now when I open my home folder it opens with Konqueror.
Interestingly enough if I open the computer that opens up simply in file browser. Does anyone know how to change back to the default as I prefer the look of it to Konqueror.
in my quest to reduce chrome and padding in Nautilus, I've come across something I can't seem to find on my own. I know there are 3 basic views - icons, list, and compact - and I prefer list; however, on the left of the list view, there is a 20-25px or so (depending on theme of course) of margin/padding/space on the left - reserved for the + or - or arrows indicating a folder can be expanded inline.
I would simply like to remove this space (and the cooresponding +/- icons). I realize this will relinquish my ability to expand folders inline - which is fine with me, I don't use the feature much anyway.I can probably surmise where the actual icons live, reverse engineering a theme or what have you... but I'm guessing that still won't change that space.
is there any way to get a more "vanilla" list view?UPDATE: while I don't think specs really matter to this question, here's what I'm running anyway:Ubuntu 10.10, 32bit in Gnome (default for that Ubu version) using mostly stock Nautilus besides it being the Elementary build (hidden menubar and such).
I like view file listings in Nautilus in the List View. By default the "Location" column is not visible and I have to set it to visible through "View -> Visible Columns" each time. Is there anyway to make the change permanent?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI did an adjustment or two, and then it has been just been hanging up using 100% CPU when it is loaded. When an application uses it to save a document, it does not hang.I created a Templates folder and assigned it with the user-dirs.I then changed the view of that particular directory from LIST to ICONS.And then it started to hang up.Somehow I was able to change the view back to LIST, but it still hangs up.
View 1 Replies View RelatedJust wondering if it's possible to change the size of icons when Nautilus is in List View. I tried playing around with gtk-icon-sizes in the gtkrc file of my theme, but there doesn't seem to be a setting for it there. I could just zoom in/out, but when I have the icons the size I want them to be, the text is too small (see attachment).

Is there a way to change the applications icons to a list?
If not, how about reducing the size of the icons for the applications window and for the panel on the left?
I'm wondering if it's possible to change the default size of pdf and image icons on my whole filesystem because it doesn't look proportional to the other icons like the folders and text files and I really don't want to stretch each one of them everytime.
Here's an example:
The other way the size could be fixed is by going to edit > preferences > preview and just do never for each drop down but I don't want to lose the preview effect.
I cannot figure out how to make my desktop icons smaller. I know I can right click and "stretch icon", but that only resizes them individually. If I can change the size of them individually,Im thinking I can also, somehow change the default size, of all of them at once.I am currently working on some graphics projects for the observatory and it's easiest to save them to my desktop for now.but they are so big ,that before i know it, they are overlapping each other. stretching them to a smaller size one by one is a time killer.Usually I dont keep icons on my desktop, only the icons for my external drives and the like.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI regularly use an online imageboard website, and as such I am constantly uploading images. Being new to the linux OS, I was quite familar with Microsoft Windows file explorer and its adaption with file uploading. However, it would seem that GNOME follows a different method and uses a separate file browser to a file uploader Here is my file browser and the various options available (icon size, icon view, bigger thumbnails):
And here is what I get when I upload files to a website: My question is, is there a workaround or package available to allow changeable icon sizes/thumbnails in the file uploader? The picture preview is good, but really isn't enough for what I require
I have found the way to do this for KDE 3.x.x but not for KDE 4. Konqueror is the default web browser which opens when you click a link, but I want to use FireFox instead. Where must I go for KDE4 to change the default web browser to something else?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been using Thunderbird (2.0.0.24) with html attachments opening in Firefox.I just installed the new Chrome browser (5.0.375.70) and like it very much, enough so that I decided to switch from Firefox now that the Add-Ons I like are available for Chrome (Lastpass, Adblock, AutoPager). I've made Chrome the default browser in KDE's "Configure Desktop>Default Applications", but html attachments in Thunderbird still open in Firefox.I've tried most of the fixes offered on this and other forums as well as those offered by Mozilla's various help files, but nothing works. Most suggestions refer to fixes for 1.x versions of Thunderbird and no longer can be used.I just checked another OpenSUSE 11.2 PC with the newer 3.04 version of T'bird and saw no solution there either.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI don't know if this is a known issue, but when I want to copy/move a file to a folder containing lots of sub-folder displayed as list, I can't do a simple drag&drop, because there is no empty space to move this file. It will always go into one of the sub-folders. So obviously I have to go up one folder or to change view from list to Icon or Compact. Is it a known issue? Is there a solution? View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 12 yesterday. After installation, I added some packages like gstreamer*, amarok, vlc etc.
Once I rebooted, all desktop icons became invisible and I'm unable to open file browser and browse files/folders.
When I log out, I get this message saying "File Manager not responding!"
I initially thought I messed up with settings, and created a new account. Still no use.
BTW, I use Gnome Desktop Environment.
I went further and installed Fedora 12 again. And did the same package installation. And after reboot, no desktop items is visible and can't browse files/folders using file browser (nautilus).
I was recording a DVD when I wanted to look at a folder to see if there was a file there. I went to "places", as I always do, and a window poped up asking for a password. This has never happened before. I entered the password and went to the folder. I always view folders as "list", then they displayed as "icons". I finished the recording and re-started. It still appears the same, and when I open programs I notice little differences in the way things look and feel. The reason I was recording DVD's was to get some of the movies off my hard drive. It was down to 81Gbs free, It now says there is 365 Gbs free. I have searched everything and I see nothing missing.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'd like to know how to change the Unity Launch icons file association. For example; when i click the 'Files and Folders' icon and the side menu pops up with recent, favorites, etc. I click any of them and they associate those files or folders with Vuze. It also associates the trash can at the bottom of the menu, and any external hdd that i attach; but this only occurs when i open them through the Unity Launch Bar. I can go to the Home icon and open a folder and they open, or open the hdd off the desktop and its fine. It seems to only happen when i try to open them through Unity.

View 6 Replies View Relatedmy dad has been using Ubuntu for a few weeks now and likes it, however he's having some issues regarding read-only files. He's a doctor and frequently has to download word files to edit, however they always download as a read-only file. While this isn't particularly difficult to do, he finds doing it tiresome and because he isn't the most proficient PC user, may have difficulty with it when I return to school after the summer. I was hoping that there's some way to change the default settings so that all files downloaded are writeable.
Additionally, he has a number CD-RWs which he both retrieves files from and stores them to, however when trying to access these CDs he is told that they are read-only. Right clicking on the CD and trying to change the access permissions doesn't work (says that permissions can't be changed because the disc is read-only).
How can I change the default file manager in GNOME? I've got these notes but neither methods work:
GUI
Change under 'Session control' in 'Ubuntu Tweak'
Delete nautilus and type in pcmanfm or another file manager such as thunar
Apply
Quit ubuntu-tweak
Reboot
TERMINAL:
Code:
gksu gedit /usr/share/applications/nautilus-folder-*handler.desktop
Then replace 'nautilus --no-desktop %U' to whatever you like. Example: pcmanfm %U
Save, logout & login
Update: This works. Why does the Ubuntu Tweak method not work though?
Code:
sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/nautilus-folder-*handler.desktop

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to Fedora 15 and am super-happy with it. Unfortunately, I have a minor issue that I haven't yet figured out how to fix: I can't change the default applications or the file type associations. For instance, I'd like to set Chromium as my default browser. When I first login, I tell it to set itself as default. But after I end my session and log back it, Firefox is back to being the default browser.
I have the same issues when trying to change what applications open filetypes. .rtf files have been opening in Wordpad in Wine. When I try to change it to Writer through the "Open with" dialog, it retains the change for that session but resets after I log out. I actually ended up having to uninstall Calibre because it was opening .odt files instead of LibreOffice and I couldn't change it permanently.
