Sep 17, 2010I have used Ubuntu 8.x before side by side with win XP with absolutely no problems, today I have a windows 7 working great, but it was not enough for me so I've installed winXP on another NTFS partition, and then installed the Ubuntu 8, but the problem is that grub didn't detect windows 7 only detected Ubuntu and win xp ( and win XP under the name "windows Vista" !!). I did rename the win XP thing, not big thing, but there still the main problem of windows seven, it's not detected yet. So what I have done is downloading Ubuntu 10.10 beta and repeated the same thing after deleting the previous partition that Ubuntu 8 was on and created new one and used it. But the problem stays the same.
I have 80 GB - all one partition - windows 7
and 1 TB - 359 GB -storage
-26 GB - windows XP
-26 GB - Ubuntu 10.10
- ~4 or 5 GB - swap
-443 GB - storage
I know it's not organized enough but I couldn't do better using win7 storage management tool So what should I do to make windows 7 detected by grab and bootable, and I really don't want to format any drive,specially win7.

I re-install Grub2 with live CD and the WinXP doesn't show up...
So I re-install WinXP... Re-install Grub2 and WinXP doesn't show up again...
So I custumise Grub2 and I put one line for WinXP (doesn't work)
But Now, Win7 line in Grub2 boot WinXP

Ubuntu Installation :: 'graphical' Grub Breaks On Win7/winxp/10.04
Jan 6, 2011early tl;dr: The fancy grub breaks on my wubi 10.04 install, can I force it to use the old grub?
When I rebuild grub.cfg (last time was yesterday for kernel update to .37), and shut down / reboot, grub breaks because it can't 'loadfont' and a few other errors which are related to the 'graphical' grub boot menu.
To fix this I have to boot into a live CD (also Ubuntu 10.04) and run the following:

(If I edit the grub.cfg before shutting down then this doesn't happen, obviously, but sometimes I forget and this is the result. I'd rather stop the problem at it's source than fight against the updater).

When I load into ubuntu I can only see winXP. i did a sudo update-grub and got the windows loader, which then shows me winXP and ubuntu. what i would love is one boot page that has listed winXP, win7, and ubuntu. FWIW this is an acer netbook, winXP is on D:/ and win7 is on F:/, i used the windows installer wubi for ubuntu 10.10.

Jun 13, 2011We are planning on rolling out a mail service that will backend a webmail/groupware interface using postfix and dovecot, and we are trying to nail down an architecture for the system. I was hoping I could get some opinions from you good people on the different models we have come up with, and any improvements. To preface this discussion, we use NFS as the backend storage for mail so that clusters of mail servers can be created.
One possible solution is to separate three services, inbound email, outbound email, and message retrieval onto separate servers. We currently run a mail system with 65K users in this manner and it works, but there is a lot of wasted cpu on the inbound and outbound mail servers. where the dovecot servers are doing most of the work.
Another solution would be to combine the dovecot and inbound postfix servers to run dovecot as the local transport agent for postfix with LMTP, giving us quota and sieve capability.
The last solution is to run all three services on the same machine, giving us a single server image that we can clone on demand when we need to add more performance.
The single server, all three services, solution seems to be the simplest to build and manage, but putting all your eggs in one basket like that concerns us. What if there is a sudden influx of mail from our filtering platform, and it slows down all the other processes? What if the NFS server becomes disconnected from the network and the load average on each server skyrockets killing the ability for outbound mail to flow (where a separate outbound mail server would continue running despite this issue)?

this gets mounted correctly and i can read/write the shared folder at home i have a win7 box that i create a share on and use the exact same code in fstab, but it wont mount the share. i get something like permission denied or access denied is there a difference in how winxp and win7 share folders? my usernames on the linux boxes match those of my windows boxes at each location. i have given my win accounts full access and control over the win shares.

The new email server will replace the primary one.I would like to setup the new email server in parallel with the existing one.This way i can observe issues that might occur and be aware of what could go wrong. I want to received mail to be delivered to both mail servers at the same time.I would like to use postfix, exim i find a bit to difficult to understand.I have thought of using transport maps, the only problem is that you can only forward mail to one server at a time using transport maps.I think recipient_bcc_maps and sender_bcc_maps could work, i would just like ideas of how i can do this.

Jan 1, 2010i want to write a batch file to copy s:my documents (winxp) to q:ackupmy documents (ubuntu server)
q:ackup is a samba share on an ubuntu server
when i try to execute a simple xcopy command to copy My Docs to the server from the command line on the winxp machine, i get an error telling me "access denied" and "unable to create directory"
using the same xcopy command, i can copy other directories from the same drive (s on the winxp machine to the same backup destination (q.
i can drag and drop my documents from s: to q:. the copy completes w/o error.
from command prompt in winxp, i can create directories in the backup destination.
i don't get it. is there something special about the My Documents folder?
My Documents = 2.25 GB is that a problem?

We have set up a connection in OpenOffice Base to MtSql on a remote server - a very nifty thing.
We have OpenVpn set up - also works very good, in Yast - Security and users - allowed services - External Zone we have Mysql added so we can connect no problem.
My Question is : we can connnect using OpenVpn - through 10.x.x.x. but also via the normal address , 193.x.x.x.
How can I limit this, so people can only connect via the OpenVpn connection?
The clients are all OpenSuse 11.2, the remote server is OpenSuse 11.1.

Jan 4, 2010In my household a number of people use the internet. Up to a maximum of 3 wired connections and 2 wireless connections at its peak, all connection through my D-LINK G604T router. The problem is, when one person is downloading or watching ..... or whatever, the others using the internet suffer. I've spent hours configuring QoS on my router, and long story short, no matter how I configure it, it just simply does not work. QoS in no way shape or form limits connection speed (which it says it should). Anyway.
I have a spare computer under my desk, and I'd like to know if I could set this up with a (free) linux distro that limits bandwidth speed per connection. For example, of the 1500 kb/ps (about) my modem pulls, is there a way to limit that to 768 or 512 per connection? so person A can still download, person B can still watch ....., and person C can still play counterstrike with a latency under 100. This would solve many, many arguments in my house I am *fairly* good with computers, but if the distro came with documentation and a GUI that would be awesome.

Mar 9, 2010I running Squid 2.7. I using NCSA veryfication so only registered users may use proxy server. I want to allow only 1 connection to proxy for 1 user. Why not per ip ? Alot of users have dynamic IP's and i want to avoid password sharing beetween users. Any idea how to do it in squid ? Mb other autentyfication system connected to squid granting access to proxy server ?

Jan 11, 2011I am at a loss how to prevent Denial of Service attacks to port 25 and not block legitimate connections from 2 Barracuda 800(s) and block smart phones such as iPhones/Blackberrys/iPhones that use the server smtp.server.com for email.
Presently for port 25
RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -p tcp -m state --state NEW -m tcp --dport 25 -j ACCEPT
The 2 Barracuda 800(s) make port 25 connections all the time, plus users with smart_phones have the incoming server type:
IMAP
pop.server.com
smtp.server.com
Is there a way to keep Denial of Service attacks from happening with iptables rules without causing blocking to the Barracuda(s) that make constant port 25 connections & smart phones that poll? I was thinking if I allowed the Barracuda(s) in these lines
-s (barracuda)24.xx.xx.xx -d (emailserver)24.00.xx.xx -p tcp -m tcp --dport 25 -m state --state NEW -j ACCEPT
Where the source would be the Barracuda going to the email server. It would be allowed, then I am left with how to allow other connections like Smart_Phones that connect via Port 25. I am thinking if I put rules in place doing connection counts in a minute it would result in errors connecting to the server and people would start complaining. Plus any limiting may result in blocking real traffic. Then would I need to allow the ISP range in the above example to accept port 25, I am still left with how to drop a flood/denial of service attack.

i have some thoughts on the 2nd requirement. in the user configuration file of /etc/ppp/chap-secret, you can specify the range of ip the user can get, does it limit the max connection per user a/c? or they can connect anyway, just every now and then a box pop up says conflict in IP address?
Ubuntu Networking :: Very Slow Connection Speeds But Okay On Win7
Apr 5, 2010I am currently staying on a university campus in Taiwan. Internet on Ubuntu Lucid 64bit here is often painfully slow, except for connections to Taiwanese websites. I dual boot with Windows 7, and there is no problem there. For instance, I downloaded the same piece of software (Spideroak) on both Win and Ubuntu, with Ubuntu I had to try repeatedly as the download would not complete, and in the end it took several hours to download. On W7, it took 10 minutes. What is Windows and Ubuntu doing differently?
I tried disabling ipv6 for this session by running sudo sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=1, as a number of posts mention improving connection speed that way, but no effect.
I know that websites from Taiwan are working well, because I am getting my Ubuntu updates from a Taiwanese mirror: updates are fast, except for packages in the 'partner' repos (presumably not loaded from the mirror) which take hours to load, if at all. I don't want to depend on Windows for large downloads... (I don't want to depend on Windows for anything).

May 6, 2010I have a server with 48 cores, 8 6-way Opteron CPU's. Ubuntu Server 9.04 only sees 32 processors. Is there a limit on the number of cores/processors that the server will use? Windows 2008 on the same server sees all 48 cores and the so does the BIOS, so this is unique to Ubuntu right now.
