Just a quick question, I want to partition my computer with Ubuntu, WinXP, and Win7. Is there a way I can change the icons in burg so the xp and 7 icons look a little different?
View 4 RepliesI have used Ubuntu 8.x before side by side with win XP with absolutely no problems, today I have a windows 7 working great, but it was not enough for me so I've installed winXP on another NTFS partition, and then installed the Ubuntu 8, but the problem is that grub didn't detect windows 7 only detected Ubuntu and win xp ( and win XP under the name "windows Vista" !!). I did rename the win XP thing, not big thing, but there still the main problem of windows seven, it's not detected yet. So what I have done is downloading Ubuntu 10.10 beta and repeated the same thing after deleting the previous partition that Ubuntu 8 was on and created new one and used it. But the problem stays the same.
I have 80 GB - all one partition - windows 7
and 1 TB - 359 GB -storage
-26 GB - windows XP
-26 GB - Ubuntu 10.10
- ~4 or 5 GB - swap
-443 GB - storage
I know it's not organized enough but I couldn't do better using win7 storage management tool So what should I do to make windows 7 detected by grab and bootable, and I really don't want to format any drive,specially win7.

I re-install Grub2 with live CD and the WinXP doesn't show up...
So I re-install WinXP... Re-install Grub2 and WinXP doesn't show up again...
So I custumise Grub2 and I put one line for WinXP (doesn't work)
But Now, Win7 line in Grub2 boot WinXP

early tl;dr: The fancy grub breaks on my wubi 10.04 install, can I force it to use the old grub?
When I rebuild grub.cfg (last time was yesterday for kernel update to .37), and shut down / reboot, grub breaks because it can't 'loadfont' and a few other errors which are related to the 'graphical' grub boot menu.
To fix this I have to boot into a live CD (also Ubuntu 10.04) and run the following:

I know how to fix it but is there a way to skip having to do this on upgrades
(If I edit the grub.cfg before shutting down then this doesn't happen, obviously, but sometimes I forget and this is the result. I'd rather stop the problem at it's source than fight against the updater).
I understand winxp pro limit the inbound connection to 10 and win7 to 20. Is there a limit for ubuntu server?

When I load into ubuntu I can only see winXP. i did a sudo update-grub and got the windows loader, which then shows me winXP and ubuntu. what i would love is one boot page that has listed winXP, win7, and ubuntu. FWIW this is an acer netbook, winXP is on D:/ and win7 is on F:/, i used the windows installer wubi for ubuntu 10.10.

this has happened in different distros, so far i have tried slack, arch, and mint at work i have an xp box with a shared folder i created. on my linux box i setup fstab as follows

this gets mounted correctly and i can read/write the shared folder at home i have a win7 box that i create a share on and use the exact same code in fstab, but it wont mount the share. i get something like permission denied or access denied is there a difference in how winxp and win7 share folders? my usernames on the linux boxes match those of my windows boxes at each location. i have given my win accounts full access and control over the win shares.
VistaOS but I want to now install Winxp but Vista keeps booting its partition. I tried hiding the vista MBR and lucid mbr but some how Vista keeps booting itself so when I have the winxp disk loaded, it goes to the blue screen with errors like reboot windows and run chkdsk.exe /F to fix the problem. anyideas? ill post pics of my partition setup soon.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSo I recently started using Windows 7, but it kept crashing so i thought "OK back to WinXP and Ubuntu 10.10" So I installed Windows (urrrggh) and that went fine, but now that I have come to installing Ubuntu Desktop 10.10, it cant seem to find the Windows XP partition, I tried manually editing partitions but it wouldnt let me resize the partition. But it did give me the option to install the Bootloader (GRUB) to the partition labelled "Windows XP Professional".
I have used this setup before and ran fine, bare in mind that was with 9.10, maybe I should install 9.10 and then use "sudo apt-get install dist-upgrade"?If i cant get this working I will try another distro and see if its Ubuntu or whether its a Windows or disk issue.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on my WinXP desktop computer. I used the LiveCD and manually configured the partitions. I resized my XP partition (the entire SATA HDD) and created a 37GB partition for Ubuntu, as well as a 3GB swap file. I installed the boot loader on the Ubuntu partition. But BIOS doesn't recognize that the drive has separate partitions, and I can't boot into it from Windows either. I know I didn't modify WinXP's MBR, but should I have? I didn't know where it was.
I booted into the LiveCD again, and went into the disk manager. I Edited the Ubuntu partition and saw a checkbox that said "Bootable". I checked it and hit apply, hoping that might do it. I waited twenty minutes and the little circle was still spinning with no indication that it was actually doing anything or any warning of how long it would take, so I rebooted. Still no luck.
Someone told me that Ubuntu sometimes won't be bootable if you have both SATA and PATA drives in the system, which I do (although both XP and Ubuntu are on the same, SATA drive) and gave me a page that told me to use Grub4Dos. I fiddled around with that, only to come onto the Ubuntu website and find out that the page they gave me was outdated, before Ubuntu used GRUB2.
Someone on IRC had mentioned they had a shared partition in NTFS, and that Ubuntu could read from it just fine... I wanted to get a second opinion before I did anything. Right now I have a WinXP partition and an Ubuntu partition, and a large NTFS partition in the middle that I'd like to move my /home to.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to make my HP DV6000 laptop dual boot with WinXP and OpenSuse 11.3. I've upgraded the hard drive in this system to 500GB and have WinXP in a 100GB primary partition. There is also a 12GB system recovery logical partition. In preparation for Linux, I used the Windows disk manager to create a 50GB primary partition. I've defragged and run check disk on both of the primary partitions and found no problems.
For the Linux install, I downloaded the OpenSuse 11.3 DVD image using metalink and DownLoadThemAll so I'm pretty confident I got a good image. I burned it to a DVD, verified that, then verified the install image using the openSuse installer. Everything looks good. When I attempt to do the install of Linux however, the suggested partitioning says that it wants to delete partitions /dev/sda1 (99.06GB), /dev/sda2 (48.83GB) and /dev/sda3 (11.72GB). In each case, it says resize is impossible due to inconsistent fs, Try checking under windows.
It then says that it wants to create three new volumes for /dev/sda1 (2.01 GB), /dev/sda2 (20.00GB) and /dev/sda3 (443.75 GB). In other words, it wants to devote the entire disk to Linux.
I thought that I would be able to tell it to install Linux in the 50GB partition that I had created for it and that it would subdivide that into volumes as appropriate. If it wanted to delete that partition and create a new one that would be fine too, but I don't understand why it thinks that it needs to delete the WinXP and recovery partitions.
Is there a way I can work around this by using either the Create Partition Setup or Edit Partition Setup options available in the installer? Or better yet, is there something I can do via windows partitioning before I install that will prevent it from wanting to delete my windows partitions in the first place?
I've reached the point where I rarely need to boot into my physical WinXP install, which is a total mess right now as well ... so I've decided that I want to completely remove it from my system, then create a virtual install of Vista Business Edition.

I do have Samba installed and it can "see" my Windows 7 computer...however, I cannot connect to the machine. I think I've heard some issues with the way how Windows 7 deals with networking now and Samba doesn't work with Windows 7 now or something? If possible, I can always use an NFS server and client for my Windows 7 computer.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am triple-booting the OS mentioned above. I only recently decided to try Arch. The issue however is with Arch & Ubuntu. My hard drive contains a common swap partition for Ubuntu and Arch, the home directories of both Linux, the C: drive for WinXP and a partition called 'Share' which as the name suggests I use to keep all the files (work, music, vids etc.) that I want to share between the various OS.
Till before Arch, I could easily share files between Ubuntu and WIndows. It seems it was possible because Windows does not respect the file permission restrictions, or may be not at least the ones imposed by Ubuntu. However now that I have Arch on a partition, Arch can not read the files owned by my user on the ntfs partition. This basically blocks my access to everything on the Arch system except for the system files.
I would like to know how I can securely share my files between the too Linux. If it is advisable and also if it is secure. For the workaround, I am not worried about using the cli, however one shall have to be patient with me since I am not a veteran at Linux.
I'm a F11 user and I wanted to see the new Windows 7 and right now, the computer doesn't boot via grub.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using 9.10 on a laptop that has Win7 in another partition. Within Win7 I get strong full bars for the wifi signal strength. On the same laptop in the same location, I get only 2 bars (low) wifi signal strength when I'm in Ubuntu 9.10.
I'm using the wifi transceiver built into my Acer Aspire 5732Z laptop.
So, I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 in a different disk partition than where Windows 7 is currently installed. So, can I just go ahead and format the partition which contains Win7? Won't that compromise Ubuntu's integrity?
View 8 Replies View RelatedToday I was messing around with my partitions, and I decided to shrink my main partition that had Windows on it, so that I would could have one big storage partition and then a Windows 7 one and a Ubuntu one. Well, it didn't really work so I decided just to wait for Lucid to come out and start with a fresh install. So I went into EASEUS Partition Manager and resized my main Windows 7 partition back to its normal size. It had to reboot and did its stuff, and then when I restarted my computer, grub was showing the grub rescue> thing. So I went into the Windows 7 recovery disk, and tried all the BootRec.exe options. None of those worked. So I decided to go to the extreme and just delete Ubuntu completely.
I deleted the entire partition with GParted and then resized the main partition all the way. Then I booted into a Ubuntu live usb and re-installed Ubuntu. I thought it would just reinstall Grub and I would be able to get to both Ubuntu and Windows 7. It did install Grub, but now I can only boot into Ubuntu. It's really weird, because I can boot into windows, it just says starting windows and does the loading thing. And then EASEUS Partition Manager comes and says that all resize operations were complete successfully(because I hadn't booted into windows since I resized stuff with it) and then the screen just stays black for a long time. I don't know what to do. If I wait long enough, my computer just reboots...
I'm pretty new to linux and everything, and I was wonder how I could partition my hard drive on my laptop so that I don't loose any of my data and so that I can run Kubuntu along side of windows 7.

The problem is that after installation of win 7 i lost the ability to boot form cd. In bios i still have cd set up to boot first and drive second, but win 7 did something that overrides bios set up. I even tried Esc for boot menu, then i select to boot form cd, but it still boots in windows.

I looked it up, put some code into a LiveCD terminal, and I thought it worked. But now, I says that I definitely need to put in a Windows 7 CD and do that MBR fix method. I did not own a Windows 7 CD; my laptop came with it pre-installed, and I have no recovery partition anymore.

View 5 Replies View RelatedAs a big supporter of Ubuntu, after installing Ubuntu 10.10 on my mums laptop i decided to also install it on my sisters Acer Aspire one netbook.
The specific netbook had pre-installed Win7 starter. Everything went really smooth with the installation with ubuntu 10.10, Grub menu was also loading pretty well but when i chose to load on windows it loads the recovery partition of the hard drive.
The issue is that the netbook, like most netbooks and laptops, has a hidden partition which is used to recover Windows on the system. My Grub2 loader added this partition as an option to load windows with result me not be able to boot on windows ...well i do can load but it loads the recovery of windows.
