q:ackup is a samba share on an ubuntu server

when i try to execute a simple xcopy command to copy My Docs to the server from the command line on the winxp machine, i get an error telling me "access denied" and "unable to create directory"

using the same xcopy command, i can copy other directories from the same drive (s on the winxp machine to the same backup destination (q.

i can drag and drop my documents from s: to q:. the copy completes w/o error.

from command prompt in winxp, i can create directories in the backup destination.

Ubuntu Servers :: Can't Get Through OpenLDAP Server Docs / Sort It?

Jun 30, 2010

I'm trying to follow the OpenLDAP docs that are part of the Ubuntu 10.04 Server Guide, listed here:

I get about halfway through, to this command:

sudo ldapadd -x -D cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com -W -f frontend.example.com.ldif

When it asks me to "Enter LDAP Password:" and nothing I have tried works. I thought it might have been "olcRootPW: secret" set in the backend file in the step before, but that isn't working.

General :: XCopy - Get To The Server's Command Prompt On 1and1-hosted Site?

Nov 19, 2010

Normally, on my website, files are either handled by WordPress or by me doing FTP. I'd like to copy my entire site to a new folder. I don't want to copy it down to my local drive (with wget) and then just upload it. How close is this to the line I'd need (except near midnight)

mv -r fromfolder \%todaysdate%

I've played with Unix and Linux for a few days over the years, but I'm a Windows (and DOS-prompt) guy. So, I don't know how to get to the server's command prompt on my 1and1-hosted site.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Remix With WinXP Now WinXP BSOD On Boot?

Sep 12, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu Remix 10.04 on my wifes MSI U100 netbook. I did a dual boot just in case she had to get into Windows for something. I let the install automatically partion (did the side by side option). Anyway, Ubuntu works fine and imported all her documents and stuff. Problem is Windows XP won't boot. The first time I tried to boot Windows XP I got a message saying the hardware had changed and I had to select safe mode, normal boot, last known good, etc... I booted normally. I got the splash screen followed by a quick flash of BSOD and a reboot. I does this no matter how I try to boot Windows (safe, command prompt, etc). Anyone have any idea what the problem is?

As I recall in the days of DOS and routine use of command.com,the xcopy command had an option -- I think it was "/a".When xcopy processed a file, it would alter the state of the archive attribute such that multiple runs of the same command would catch whatever was missed by the previous run. A common use was to fill diskettes and similar small storage media.xcopy a group of files === rats, media fullxcopy catches more files === repeat ad libxcopy eventually catches the last remaining files

Ubuntu :: Downloaded .docs Are Read-only

Feb 9, 2011

Whenever I download a .doc file I send to myself and open it in OpenOffice via Ubuntu 10.04, it opens as a read-only that I "do not have the rights" to alter. This is obnoxious, because then I have to copy and paste the entire thing, which can lead to format issues, before I can continue to work on the document.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Download, With Java 6 Jdk / Docs?

Jun 23, 2010

I'm relatively new to Ubuntu 9.10, and have encountered a problem downloading anything. Here's the recurring error message my terminal displays:

Setting up sun-java6-doc (6.20dlj-0ubuntu1.9.10) ...
This package is an installer package, it does not actually contain the
JDK documentation. You will need to go download one of the
archives:

jdk-6u19-docs.zip jdk-6u18-docs.zip jdk-6u19-docs-ja.zip jdk-6u19-docs-ja.zip
(choose the non-update version if this is the first installation).
Please visit url now and download.

The file should be owned by root.root and be copied to /tmp.

I tried finding these at Oracle/Sun/Java, and can find no such archive ".docs." Can anyone help me find these or something else that will work instead?

Ubuntu :: Opening MS Word Docs In OpenOffice - Changing Format

Feb 18, 2011

I noticed that files that were written in MS Word 2003 change when opened in Open Office 3.2.1 This usually involves tables, lists, and image placement, as well as page margins and boundaries. It sometimes makes it annoying when reading files saved in MS Word .doc format that other people send me. Does anyone know if there is an extension to fix this? Or settings that can be changed? Also, was this addressed in version 3.3.0 of OpenOffice? Has anyone tried it on LibreOffice? I don't want to install VirtualBox, Windows, and Office to read Word files properly. I dislike MS.

There are several package types in synaptic. -doc. Obviously, these are docs. They go into /usr/share/doc folder. Is there some sort of GUI for viewing and searching docs, something like MSDN?

-dev. Not exactly sure about these ones. Are these development files (binaries, source code etc) for coders/developers who want to work on that particular project?

-dbg. Not sure about these ones too. Debug versions of binaries? Shouldn't they be included with development files? Let's be more specific.

libstdc++6. This has runtime for applications compiled with C++.
libstdc++6-4.5-dev. Needed to develop and compile those applications.
libstdc++6-4.5-dbg. Needed to debug applications which use binaries from libstdc++6.

Debian :: Search Installed Packages And List Available Docs

I have realized that in not installing suggested packages I've missed out on a ton of doc files, which would really come in handy while I'm away from internet access.

Is there a way take a list of currently installed packages and find out which of them have doc packages available? Possibly install them in a single step? I have been playing around with aptitude and apt-rdepends, but I'm not quite sure how to go about this. Somehow take a list of installed packages, run it through an apt-cache search, and end up with a list of -doc packages to install? My bash-fu isn't the greatest, and I suppose this could be a bad idea to begin with.

Software :: Saving OpenOffice.org WP Frames In Word Docs

Jul 14, 2010

In my graduate professional writing program, I have had to make several documents that integrate graphics. In order to manage the graphics, I taught myself how to use frames. But I discovered that the Openoffice.org word processor has a problem saving the frames correctly. I save my document and close it. When I reopen it later, the graphics in some of the frames (not all) are distorted; they appear cut in half. Examining the frames, I determined that the anchors of the affected frames had changed since I saved and closed. Changing the anchors back to whatever they were restored the graphics to normal. Every time I saved and closed, this happened again. The first solution I came up with was to save with the frames set properly, and export the document as a PDF file; the frame anchor settings will not mess up for that.

Then, because I save my school documents as Word files (the university--that program, anyway--doesn't use Linux), I tried saving the document as an OpenOffice text document (.odt). That also avoided the frame anchor settings problem, meaning the problem occurs only when saving as a Word document. But since my professors probably don't use OpenOffice, I am submitting PDF documents in this situation.

Software :: Udev And Tmpfs Fail On Custom Kernel - Docs Misleading ?

Jul 19, 2010

On boot, udev is giving a mount error. It appears to not have control of the /dev directory. This was finally traced to bad kernel compile, but some questions remain. Bogus information has been removed.

The kernel was built with tmpfs (CONFIG file had CONFIG_TMPFS, compiled kernel probably did not, this has been fixed.)

My system runs, probably because there is a valid /dev directory tree copied from the original 2.4.31 system.

After boot, I am getting 3 udevd running, according to "ps -A".

After re-executing /etc/rc.d/rc.udev I see only one udevd at a low id number (625).

Previously I had 2.4.31, which had udev and it was mounting using ramfs.

My fstab has:

On my previous 2.4.31 these fstab lines were:

I have been running Slackware since 1996. This is Slackware 13.1, running on a Sempron/Athlon K8, VIA chipsets. I have been fighting with this install for 2 weeks now. If I have to I will disable udev and live with a /dev directory that I setup by hand.

If udev does not have a tmpfs over the top of /dev, does it use the /dev on the harddrive or does it just fail some other way ?
