Ubuntu Installation :: Installed Winxp Alongside Win7 And Then 10.10, Can't Load Win 7?

Apr 13, 2011

When I load into winXP I can see the files for winXP and win7. When I load into ubuntu I can only see winXP. i did a sudo update-grub and got the windows loader, which then shows me winXP and ubuntu. what i would love is one boot page that has listed winXP, win7, and ubuntu. FWIW this is an acer netbook, winXP is on D:/ and win7 is on F:/, i used the windows installer wubi for ubuntu 10.10.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installed Alongside Win7 But GRUB Doesn't Appear; Just Boots Win7

Ubuntu Installation :: Multiboot Win7 Winxp 10.10 Beta?

Sep 17, 2010

I have used Ubuntu 8.x before side by side with win XP with absolutely no problems, today I have a windows 7 working great, but it was not enough for me so I've installed winXP on another NTFS partition, and then installed the Ubuntu 8, but the problem is that grub didn't detect windows 7 only detected Ubuntu and win xp ( and win XP under the name "windows Vista" !!). I did rename the win XP thing, not big thing, but there still the main problem of windows seven, it's not detected yet. So what I have done is downloading Ubuntu 10.10 beta and repeated the same thing after deleting the previous partition that Ubuntu 8 was on and created new one and used it. But the problem stays the same.

I have 80 GB - all one partition - windows 7
and 1 TB - 359 GB -storage
-26 GB - windows XP
-26 GB - Ubuntu 10.10
- ~4 or 5 GB - swap
-443 GB - storage

I know it's not organized enough but I couldn't do better using win7 storage management tool So what should I do to make windows 7 detected by grab and bootable, and I really don't want to format any drive, specially win7.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Installation Alongside Win7

Jun 29, 2011

I've been dual booting Ubuntu and winxp for a few years and the Ubuntu installation in my machines has always been a matter of a few clicks, with Ubuntu recognizing my current xp installation and offering to repartition my disk to have both OSs coexist.I recently bought a new laptop (HP dv6t, win7 x64) and while trying to install Ubuntu 11.04, the installer informed me that I would have to get rid of win7 to install the new OS.

What happened to the friendly installer? Is there still an easy way to set up a dual boot in a system in which win7 is already present and an installation cd for it is not available?

Ubuntu Installation :: 'graphical' Grub Breaks On Win7/winxp/10.04

Jan 6, 2011

early tl;dr: The fancy grub breaks on my wubi 10.04 install, can I force it to use the old grub?

When I rebuild grub.cfg (last time was yesterday for kernel update to .37), and shut down / reboot, grub breaks because it can't 'loadfont' and a few other errors which are related to the 'graphical' grub boot menu.

To fix this I have to boot into a live CD (also Ubuntu 10.04) and run the following:
Taken from [URL]

Code:
sudo fdisk -l
sudo mkdir /win
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /win
sudo mkdir /vdisk
sudo mount -o loop /win/ubuntu/disks/root.disk /vdisk

[Code]....

I know how to fix it but is there a way to skip having to do this on upgrades
(If I edit the grub.cfg before shutting down then this doesn't happen, obviously, but sometimes I forget and this is the result. I'd rather stop the problem at it's source than fight against the updater).

The installation seems to have gone ahead without any glitches, except on reboot, it boots straight into Windows with no option to select Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Just Installed On New Machine Alongside Windows 7 - No Boot Menu

I've just installed 11.04 on a new machine, to be dual booted with Windows 7. The installation process completed, popped the disc back out, but when booting up I get no boot menu and just load Windows 7. I don't get any error messages or any sort of feedback. If i go into BIOS, I only have Windows 7 as a bootable option. I presumed grub or an equivalent would be installed as part of the installation.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installed Ubuntu To Run Alongside Windows 7?

May 10, 2011

I downloaded and installed Ubuntu (most recent version) today from the website to run alongside my Windows 7 operating system. I restarted as requested, and chose Ubuntu, and it said, "Finishing installation" (or something to that effect), counted down from 5, reached 0, hovered at 0 for a minute, then the screen went black.

After waiting a very long time, I pressed ctrl+alt+delete twice and it rebooted the computer. This time, after doing everything like before, it went into Ubuntu and everything worked normally (as if installing properly) and performed a mandatory reboot. Now whenever I try to boot Ubuntu, it gives me a list of things to do on boot (I can't remember them but off the top of my head it is something like

-Ubuntu
-Ubuntu (recovery)
-Windows 7
-Windows 7 Recovery [the ones with windows 7 take me back to the page where I can initially choose which OS to run]

Choosing either of the Ubuntu ones causes a very fast string of words to fly across the screen (too technical to understand and too fast to read, but the word 'failed' jumped out a lot) and then the screen goes black. The computer remains on but the screen remains black until I (regretfully) force off my computer.

General :: Ubuntu 11.04 Installed Alongside Windows 7 Resized Partition / Cannot Access

Apr 29, 2011

I have already done the installation process following the guide on Ubuntu's site, got everything up and running but the partition that I made in the installer was too small. I was then directed by a friend (a slightly less inexperienced newbie) to modify this through Easeus Partition Manager. I shrunk the Windows 7 partition to only the space that was in use, giving the newly unallocated space to the Ubuntu partition. Set the changes and rebooted the computer, then got the message "unknown filesystem, grub rescue". Now have no idea what to do with this. What happened??

I've been scouring the forums for something helpful but I can't find anything that is a comparable circumstance.I can still access Ubuntu through my flashdrive.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Remix With WinXP Now WinXP BSOD On Boot?

I just installed Ubuntu Remix 10.04 on my wifes MSI U100 netbook. I did a dual boot just in case she had to get into Windows for something. I let the install automatically partion (did the side by side option). Anyway, Ubuntu works fine and imported all her documents and stuff. Problem is Windows XP won't boot. The first time I tried to boot Windows XP I got a message saying the hardware had changed and I had to select safe mode, normal boot, last known good, etc... I booted normally. I got the splash screen followed by a quick flash of BSOD and a reboot. I does this no matter how I try to boot Windows (safe, command prompt, etc). Anyone have any idea what the problem is?

Debian Installation :: Sed Apt Get And Installed Kde And X Org They Don't Load?

Dec 25, 2010

ok I used apt get and installed kde and x org they don't load right but I'll try reconfiguring them and post if i still have troubleI just got Debian to install after a lot of attempts using a v506 DVD set, a 507 net CD, and a 507 kde cd1. The 507 Cd's never made it past the installing the core packages part. The DVD set decided to work this time but the select and install software part failed. I now have a working terminal and would like to install kde and the other Debian packages that come with it. What would be the best way to do this without rerunning the installer off the DVD?

The DVD's worked fine last month when I setup a friends laptop, so I'm thinking I have a bad DVDROM drive or have some how ruined the disks. more likely a bad drive given the newer CD wouldn't work.edit:I'm running a Compaq Presario SR1710NX Desktop PC (AMD Sempron 3400+ Processor, 256 MB RAM, 100 GB Hard Drive, CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive)also the Debian live CD works just fine on my system I just can't install from it

Ubuntu :: Can't Get Win7 To Load?

Jul 2, 2010

I can be somewhat long-winded at times and I'd rather give a full account of the problem I've always used windows as an OS but have been curious about Linux for a while now, so after looking around online I decided to try ubuntu. I have an Asus EEE PC netbook that came with win7 already installed on it. Last night I downloaded the netbook edition of ubuntu via their website, burned the .iso to a disc via my external dvd drive and then ran the demo. I couldn't get it to boot off the disc when I rebooted, so I had to pick the third option which I think installed some files to the computer in order for me to be able, to run the demo. When it finished that and I rebooted, the dual boot menu came up with both win7 and ubuntu on it. I messed around with ubuntu for a few hours before deciding I wanted to keep it on my computer, so I ran the full installation and selected the side-by-side installation. I remember when the installer asked about the partitions. I wasn't sure what to do as I wanted to keep both windows and ubuntu. There were three options: 1. Install them side-by-side choosing at startup 2. Erase and use entire disk 3. Specify partions manually (advanced). I wasn't sure how much space to allocate ubuntu, so I chose the first option thinking that it would just give me a default amount and would probably be plenty to effectively use the OS. After installation, it asked if I wanted to continue testing ubuntu or reboot and start using the full version. I rebooted, and it gave me no option for windows 7. In addition to this, the update manager came up and told me there were some 200 or so updates available. This is always common with windows when you use it for the first time, so I tried to update, and an error came up telling me that I needed at least +500mb free space for the update and only had 400mb or so. I'm a bit confused, and I've since tried rebooting several times, but windows is still unavailable.

I guess what I'd like to know is why win7 isn't listed in the GNU Grub at startup, and how I can fix that. I would also like to know how I could go about getting more disk space allocated to ubuntu. I thought about just uninstalling it, and then reinstalling it and giving myself 10-20gb of space when asked about the partitions again, but I obviously can't do that right now. The only other thing that I could think of was doing a factory restore for my netbook to get windows back, and then reinstalling ubuntu once again. I wasn't sure that would work though and didn't want to take the chance without getting the advice of somebody much smarter than me.
