Is there a way to limit the speed that apache will send a page to a specific computer in my LAN? I would like to be able to test what my pages would be like if they loaded at 25KB/s for example. My Server is 192.168.0.2 and the other 'browser' computer is 192.168.0.4.
View 3 RepliesMy DVD player attached to my TV is picky. Burn CD's (with avi files) at 8X and it plays them. 16X and it complains about bad disk. Every time. In karmic, I can only get cdrecord to burn at 16x.
Here's the command:
cdrecord -dev=/dev/scd0 -speed=8 -dao -pad -v something.iso
And it burns at 16x instead of 8x. Command issued with root privilege. Identical hardware under CentOS 5.x and it burns at 8x, like I asked it to. I'm all SATA if it matters. What do I need to do to get the version of cdrecord with karmic to burn a data CD at 8x? For whatever reason, CDs burned at 16x just don't work in the DVD player attached to my TV.
There is a ps3 in my house which i play with an online connection, i also download alot of stuff. so i want to limit the upload speed of the ps3 to give my downloads more speed. i have verizon fios.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIt sounds weird but on Linux I can't find a browser that allows to set a download speed limit. I found an extension for Firefox but it works only on Windows. I know the existence of download managers like d4x, wget, jdownloader, etc... but some downloads can only be done by browser. I know trickle too but if I want to change the speed limit I have to 'restart' the command (interrupting the current download). Then I didn't find an extension for Chromium.

So I am considering using IP forwarding from my own box. I think I would need a second nic, & router. Eth0 would run a dchp server, eth1 would run a client. What do I run on the box to monitor downloads & uploads, and is there a way of adding pc & laptop downloads to limit luser downloads? Does this stuff strangle speed? I'm running slackware-13.1

ptables -A PREROUTING -s 178.33.23.46 -t mangle -j MARK --set-mark 2

and now I just need the tc command to read those marks and limit bandwidth, I have a gigabit connection and would like to limit each of these ip addresses to 10mbit in and out.
I use vsftpd. I would like to know if there is a way to limit the upload speed. Only the upload speed so the "anon_max_rate" and "local_max_rate" don't do the job. Someone told me about the trickle but I expected a more recent application.

On OpenSUSE I'm trying to do it myself. I went into YaST and installed the "Web and LAMP Server" pattern.
Then I edited the default-server.conf file to point towards my website by changing the DocumentRoot and <Directory "blah blah"> lines.
Then I tried to start apache, but got the following error:

I need a program that will limit download speed per connection. So that each download is limited to 100kbit/s for e,g. I tried trickled, it only limits whole application (and doesn't work with firefox). Also tried pyshaper, doesn't work. Is there such software?

Up to a maximum of 3 wired connections and 2 wireless connections at its peak, all connection through my D-LINK G604T router. The problem is, when one person is downloading or watching ..... or whatever, the others using the internet suffer. I've spent hours configuring QoS on my router, and long story short, no matter how I configure it, it just simply does not work. QoS in no way shape or form limits connection speed (which it says it should). Anyway.
I have a spare computer under my desk, and I'd like to know if I could set this up with a (free) linux distro that limits bandwidth speed per connection. For example, of the 1500 kb/ps (about) my modem pulls, is there a way to limit that to 768 or 512 per connection? so person A can still download, person B can still watch ....., and person C can still play counterstrike with a latency under 100. This would solve many, many arguments in my house I am *fairly* good with computers, but if the distro came with documentation and a GUI that would be awesome.

So I have apache running on my local computer. When I open up local development sites in tabs in my browser, apache threads are started. That's as it should be. However, when I close the tabs, close the browsers, and then run system monitor/system task manager, I get a long list of apache threads that are sleeping, waiting around for god knows what. View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm in charge of setting up svn on a Fedora Core 9 server running cpanel for a company website. The company currently has 4 developers working on the site which isn't live yet. The server currently has one user and the site is located in ~/public_html
My question is what is the best way to set up subversion for all the developers? Should I create the svn directory in ~/ or should I create a new user and put it in their ~/public_html and create a virtual host to it so I can have www.dev.site.com point to the svn version of the site? And then create a group for all the users so everyone can access it?
Every developer in our organization has access to a single development server and all development ( other than basic experimentation ) is done on this server. This is primarily because there are several interdependent systems and having copies of these systems on each developers machine slows that machine down to the extent of making it completely unusable. All developers access this development server using ssh. Of course this implies that scp will also work as the sshd daemon is running making data vulnerable.
We are currently attempting to secure the code and data on this server from unauthorized copying and transfer.
Currently I am attempting to set up virtual machines on each developer machine that can then be used to connect to the development server. I have created a shell that does nothing but allow for the typing of one command that simply transfers ( ssh login ) the user onto the development server.
I am using virtualBox and ubuntu mini to achieve this.
Problems: The first question is if this is a reasonable way to achieve what I am attempting to. Is there a better way?
The others is more in terms of the set-up: I am attempting to resize the virtualBox console. I tried this by editing grub. Although I am able to resize the screen at start-up the entire screen goes back to ( what I believe is 800x600 ) after the Ubuntu splash screen.
The virualBox seems to have completely messed up the keyboard detection how can I rectify this?
The other is regarding the restricting of shell access I have currently done this by removing access to /bin/ for normal users. Is this secure enough or is there a better way?

Is there a limit on the number of cores/processors that the server will use? Windows 2008 on the same server sees all 48 cores and the so does the BIOS, so this is unique to Ubuntu right now.

I have a problem with a PHP/Apache program.
The website creates a RPG character through a traditional Wizard. It calls itself with a hidden variable being the page number and tests which page and returns the page data with the page incremented.
Each page should be treated as a seperate page and so would be unique. I am echoing the contents of POST to the top of the page and so I can see variables being returned. When I get data from an Ajax query from page three it saves the data (23 post fields of no more than 25 characters for each field). Page four does the same but with less fields - but it is NOT returning the data - only four fields being those that were originally posted.
I cut/paste the function from section three to section four and changed the displayed text and the names of variables to test so there are no code errors, since page three works and is saved to a database.
So the only option is that there is a PHP or Apache2 issue when POST variables are returned? I am completely out of ideas as to why this would even be an issue or how it could possibly appear.
Is the number of variables an issue? This page is less than the previous page.... And the form is POSTed...
PS: I am getting NOTICE errors from PHP being the POSTed variables that are not displayed/returned... I used:
error_reporting (E_ALL ^ E_NOTICE);
to stop these form being reported but do I need to test each one? PPS: Using If Isset($_POST['xxx']) does NOT allow that variable through...
PS: I have the default Ubuntu 10.04 Apache2 with all the ubuntu 10.04 updates...
I have a number of servers I manage, and one of them is archiving old data that is never modified on a separate partition. This partition is at 100% capacity. A friend of mine says this is an unsafe way to keep this partition, even tho I don't plan to add any more data to it or change anything within. I know I can archive the data to dvd, but I'd like to keep the data online for my users.
What are your opinions on this? Can I keep this archive partition at 100% capacity? Or do I risk some sort of data corruption? Should I mount this partition as read-only to help prevent any corruption?
I successfully configured a VPN using IPSec(Openswan) and xl2ptd. While roughly following this guide (among countless others): [URL]
The VPN-Connection works fine, connecting to it is also a swirl, I can reach all that I want in the network, and also the gateway to the Internet works - everything being routed through that VPN.
Now my problem is actually the next steps, and I didn't succeed finding the right result on any possible search:
a) I want to limit, that the VPN-Connection is only used for distinct connections to hosts, that aren't in a "company subnet", but the IP's are publicly available. (Example: The Target-IP 8.8.8.8 allows per iptables, that only my VPN-Host 1.2.3.4 accesses it via SSH, and thus I only can access that Target-IP via SSH when I'm on the VPN). When actually browsing to the ubuntu-website, I want, that NOT the VPN-Connection is used but rather my normal connection (as a reference: i'm on a Windows-Client - not my choice, btw.)
b) I want to have several such "limitations" grouped, and give users 'access-rights' to certain hosts (Examples: Admin gets access to all on all ports Testers get access to some machines on distinct ports CEO gets access only to the mailserver via POP3 or IMAP
