View 9 Replies View RelatedDoes anyone know what could be causing a Remote Desktop connection to a 10.04 box to be closing after some period of time? I have three systems all running 10.04 with Remote Desktop enabled. I'm using UltraVNC on Windows 7 to connect to them. If I open a connection and leave it open for a long time (like overnight, for example), when I come back in the morning, I still see the VNC window but as soon as I click on it, it closes. I can immediately open a new connection to the box but it now shows two active connections. At first I was thinking maybe there's an idle timeout value but given that Ubuntu still seems to think that the original connection is active, maybe the problem isn't on the Ubuntu side but on the UltraVNC side?

View 3 Replies View RelatedIf you do a search on the web you can find where to download Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection 7 client (rdp client). To get it to work under Wine (I used Crossover Office) actually was pretty simple. You will need to copy four files from an existing Windows 7 system. Two of them, mstc.exe and mstscax.dll are located in the C:WINDOWSsystem32 directory. The other two files, mstsc.exe.mui and mstscax.dll.mui, are located in a subdirectory within C:WINDOWSsystem32.
The name of the subdirectory will depend on the language and locale of the Windows system you are using. If your language is English and you are in the USA, they will be located in C:WINDOWSsystem32en-us. Copy those 4 files to some temporary directory on your Linux system. Next create a new Wine Windows XP "bottle". Use either Crossover or Wine to browse to the SAME wine C: drive subdirectories as on the Win7 PC (see above) and copy the respective files into each subdirectory in your Wine Bottle. Two files each into 2 different directories.
Next using either Crossover or Wine execute the RDC 7 application.

In Crossover you can just click the button the RUN a COMMAND and just enter "mstsc.exe". The RDC login screen should appear prompting for a Server address and a login ID. You can also change various other "options". I have not tested alot but it does seem to work pretty well so far.
I deleted my windows and now I am alone with ubuntu I use them before and now I can say that they are really awesome, basicly I want 3 things that I am using and then it will be really awesome.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI was working on my desktop under Ubuntu 9.10 when I got a message in the the upper right telling me that my Remote Desktop Connection had been activated. I don't know who it was, but they proceeded to open up a terminal and start typing a bunch of stuff. This scared the living @#$^ out of me, so I didn't really pay attention to what he was doing and immediately dove for the reset button. I disconnected my network from the web and found that RDC was NOT password protected.
Now, I probably did this a little while ago while I was playing around with it, but I also set up an account with dyndns.org. Would this possibly increase the number of attacks on my network? Just in case, I have removed my listing. Also, would any of this incident be logged somewhere? How/Where would I look to see if I'm being poked and prodded for another security hole?
I am trying to connect to my Company network through VPN. I use a Lynksys router which is most likely not the problem, as I can get the VPN and Remote Desktop to work from a WinXP Pro laptop connected to the same router. I have tried several RDC clients, none of them establish a connection. The VPN connection is active, I can ping and Traceroute to it , but I cannot get the RDC to work. The RDC should connect to 189.0.0.10 on the company network.

I recieve "Network error: Connection refused" I have gleened all of this information from other boards and tutorials. I know there is something critical that I am missing.
Is there a way gnome can allow a remote desktop / VNC connection if no user is logged in? If the server gets rebooted I can't access it (remote desktop / VNC). Someone physically has to go there and log in. Surely there must be a way as gnome is running just waiting for a login.

I went with FreeNX, NX client for windows from nomachine, XDM and xfce4. All seems to have installed well, but I can't start an NX session on my box. I can connect to the server and authenticate, but the client hangs on "Downloading the session information," eventually timing out. The log output is below - I'm not even seeing an error message. Any ideas?

The only thing I noticed during install, which was about 400 packages since this was a barebones VPS, was that I should consider recompiling the kernel with CONFIG_SOFTWARE_SUSPEND=y. I don't know if this has any impact on session information, however, since this is a new session, not one I'm trying to resume.
Friday night I was working on some networking stuff between my two Fedora 14 boxes. I have my laptop and my desktop. on both machines I have "system-config-firewall 1.2.27" and "iptables" (i believe both come standard on F14?) I kept getting the same message as seen below before realizing perhaps I should check my firewall!
I added a rule for incoming and outgoing traffic on port 22 and was able to get in with no problems at all! however today I can't ssh into anything... I can't use "Remote Desktop Viewer 2.31.4" to vnc into the machine anymore. I can't remember the exact error message at this time, it's something close to "Connection was terminated" or "Unable to connect" I can update this message later.
last night I foolishly uninstalled the system-config-firewall and then uninstalled iptables to see if it was a simple firewall issue.... totally hosed my system <insert smiley!>
After reinstalling and realizing I didn't backup my documents <insert smiley!...again...> I started reinstalling all of my applications. I'm still unable to use ssh and I've tried to ssh my own computer.

I maintain plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 systems for several friends. Each machine has only one user, the owner. I use Remote Desktop to instruct and to perform maintenance. Here's my problem:After updating the system, if the kernel has changed, a restart is needed. If I do a restart, I then have to phone the owner to insert his login credentials in the gdm login screen, before I can do anything else via Remote Desktop on that machine.There ought to be a simple way I can avoid the phone call and login myself.

I'm working on getting my myth box hooked up to my Sony flat panel display.Originally the nvidia drivers could not read the EID, so defaulted to only 640x480 over my HDMI-DVI connection.I manually updated xorg.conf with a mode for the resolution I know the thing can handle. Suddenly there are several resolutions avaialble in nvidia-settings and it seems to be communicating with the TV, as it is now listed as a Sony FP display rather than a CRT.I'm able to change the resolution now as expected.my problem, however, lies with the TV itself. I can't seem to get it to actually display the output. I'm able to remote desktop into the box and can see Gnome logged in and everything.However nothing on the TV itself.How do I troubleshoot this? Am I missing something obvious?

The machines are side by side The Ubuntu box is hardwired to my network router, and the XP machine is connected via wireless. Both get to the internet fine, and I can ping the Ubuntu box from the XP box. But, I cannot ping the XP box from the Ubuntu box, and Remote Desktop Viewer won't establish a connection to the VNC server I have running on the XP box.

I then used the following command to give me a desktop environment because I will want to run firefox and it apparently requires this to run.

I have set up a server running ubuntu desktop, and I'm able to logon through remote desktop (win 7). The problem is that if I logon from computer 1 and open some programs, I don't see these programs when I logon from computer 2.I logon with the same user, so I find this strange. View 5 Replies View RelatedI am currently staying on a university campus in Taiwan. Internet on Ubuntu Lucid 64bit here is often painfully slow, except for connections to Taiwanese websites. I dual boot with Windows 7, and there is no problem there. For instance, I downloaded the same piece of software (Spideroak) on both Win and Ubuntu, with Ubuntu I had to try repeatedly as the download would not complete, and in the end it took several hours to download. On W7, it took 10 minutes. What is Windows and Ubuntu doing differently?
I tried disabling ipv6 for this session by running sudo sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=1, as a number of posts mention improving connection speed that way, but no effect.
I know that websites from Taiwan are working well, because I am getting my Ubuntu updates from a Taiwanese mirror: updates are fast, except for packages in the 'partner' repos (presumably not loaded from the mirror) which take hours to load, if at all. I don't want to depend on Windows for large downloads... (I don't want to depend on Windows for anything).
