Ubuntu Servers :: Connect Multiple Computers Running & Run Software From One Computer From The Other?
Jan 15, 2011
This may sound stupid but I've got to ask. Can I connect multiple computers running Ubuntu & run software from one computer from the other? I know how to connect using SSH & to copy files back & forth but I don't know how or if I can share programs.

I recently purchased a wireless USB dongle. It works great. I am looking to connect multiple computers to that USB dongle. I wanted to know if anyone out there knows if it is possible to link multiple USB cables together like a reverse splitter.

Ever need to provide access to multiple PC's and did not have a router only a hub. Maybe this isn't original thinking, but then again maybe you didn't think of doing it this way (which i am sure there are many ways to do it) So I have 2 Ubuntu Servers, 1 Windows Box and a Hub - All 3 with internet access off of single ip and single Ethernet port.
While searching for a backup method today I came across Clonezilla. I was wondering if this was the right thing for me and since I needed to backup my roommates PC for a reformat and install of Windows I decided I would give it a try, but only if it would work. I didn't want the hassle of going into the main part of the house and finding out what cord was what as there is a cable modem connected into a switch (4 static IP's with internet) and one port of the switch hooked to a router) Anyways, didn't work he was on the router I was on the switch)
But this got me thinking. When I setup my server to do this, during one of the setup scripts it said it was setting up Internet access for client machines and that it was assigning them IP addresses threw a DHCP server that it had installed.
So, I dug up the hub connected the internet cable to hub up link and Server 1 on port 1 Server 2 on port 2 and Windows on port 3 The main server gets the internet provided IP address and routes it to the hub via a virtual interface. Server 2 is configured for DHCP and the windows box, It was set to get info automatically but it didn't fill the DNS info so I had to manually do that (just a heads up) I decided to use OpenDNS Servers (208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220) but im sure putting in the gateway IP address would have worked too.
So, by now if you need this I am sure you are excited and want to get to it. Like i said there are probably other ways of doing it, ways that don't involve you installing clonezilla and DRBL, maybe even just DRBL is needed, maybe one of them installed whats needed as a dependency- all I know is it works, if you know - elaborate so people know, but hey- this way not only do you have internet access on all PC's you can deploy custom images to them as well.

This is my first attempt at a server, and I running Ubuntu 10.04 server. I had to reconfigure my network, so now I am attempting to use it as a server. I have a Linksys WRT54G2 connecting various machines-- Windows XP, Ubuntu builds, and LinuxMint 10 Julia.
The long and the short of it is that the server connects to the Internet-- I can get updates and install programs via terminal. The server also connects to the router, as tested by pings. The client computers all ping back and forth nicely, and I can access the file share via FTP from the local side and externally (this is part of a larger network).
How can I get it so that my client computers can access the Internet through the router and server?

The main problem is that the software was developed about 15 years ago and is incompatible with the most current version of Java. I would like to know how to install an older version of Java so that I can use it with just this one application, without changing the version of Java that I use for everything else.

I just recently constructed a computer to create a nice Fedora Linux server to replace a Mac Mini server that I have been using for a few years. I'm attempting to create a Samba share for my machines, a Windoze 7 machine as well as a couple MacOS 10.6 machines. I've set up Samba, started the service, allowed Samba in the firewall, and used system-config-samba to set up a share with a user. I created a User called "space", and a share /media/peliculas/Movies (a mounted hard drive). When I type in \IP_ADDRESS in the address bar in windows 7, I get the option to log in. I log in correctly and I see two directories "space" and "Movies." Unfortunately when I click on one of them I get the following error message:
Windows cannot access \IP_ADDRESSMovies Check the spelling of the name. Otherwize, there might be a problem with your network. To try and identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose. I also get something similar when I attempt to connect with my mac machine. Using "Connect to Server" I type in: smb:\IP_ADDRESS, and login, I have the option to mount "Movies" or "space." If I select any of these, I get the following error message: There was an error connecting to the server "IP_ADDRESS." Check the server name or IP addres, and then try again. If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator.
Also, if I type 'smbclient -U space -L IP_ADDRESS' I can see the "Movies" in the "Sharename." At this point I'm not sure what else to do, and have been trying to figure this out for the last few days (losing sleep due to being baffled). The only thing that I can think of is that I have something wrong with the smb.conf file. Here is what it currently displays:
Global Settings
workgroup = WORKGROUP
server string = Samba Server Version %v
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
max log size = 50
[code].....
One last thing, when I check the log files, there are error messages that state: smbd/service.c:1009(make_connection_snum) '/home/space' does not exist or permission denied when connecting to [peliculas] Error was Permission denied --Windoze 7 and MacOS 10.6 log files

I have a built-in gigabit Ethernet card which is connected to a router. Router's IP address is 192.168.2.1 My IP is 192.168.2.161 (eth0) I also have a Nokia N900 connected via USB and its IP is 192.168.1.1. It serves as a second router and on that interface (usb0) my IP is 192.168.1.2 N900 is also connected to a wireless network. Router of that network has the IP 10.0.0.1 and N900's IP is 10.0.0.50 (wlan0) My problem is that I want to reach a server at 10.0.0.7 from my computer. Is there a way I can do that?

been trying to get a spare computer up and running with 10.10 server 64bit no dice so far, after hours of memchecks, disk checksums, re-burns and whatnot..install stops at 73% and does f. all.. tail log shows that it stops at updating sources, alt+f2 and ps aux shows apt-get update process running. if I kill this process, I can continue with the installation, but for this I need to repeat same process - killing all the apt instances that show up - so that it can complete the install. Unacceptable imho. computer is a AMD cpu based, athlon 2 435 on an ASUS M4A89TD PRO mainboard. ddr3 4gb crucial ram sticks. drives are functional S-ATA. No external GPU, so using IGP.
Tried installing without eth-cable plugged in, with it plugged in, with a usb install (that sorry excuse for an install was even worse, "please insert cd" midway) I know I can get the install going with desktop version.. But why would I want an xserver running on a headless computer. Kind of pissed atm, spent so many hours at this, figuring it just might be a faulty HW item. It isn't. using 10.10 desktop on my laptop and production pc - and been using 8.04 as main server, until now...
Edit: another one of them optiarc sony nec **** for brains dvd/cd-rom/writer it seems. add a check for this in future releases, with big bold letters "YOU ARE SCREWED, BUY NEW HARDWARE" printed as soon as the cd loads in these drives.. I've got better things to spend my time on than staring at a screen trying to figure out why it won't load properly

How to submit multiple jobs onto a Linux server. The only way I know to submit and run a job on a server is using qsub, and verifying the status of the job using qstat. I usually run my scripts using qsub -cwd so that I can run it on my own directory (instead of having the results sent to a scratch folder).
1. However, assuming qsub/msub are not available, is there another way to do it? What commands can I use instead?
2. I know that some jobs can run in the background, is that an alternative? How do I do it? And would I still be able to check the status of the job or delete it?

I currently am running 10.04.1 and have successfully setup my home web server to run a single website. My current settings are:
-I have registered the domain name annarrankings.com through godaddy
-A record is - host = @ and points to = 71.114.220.3
-CName is - host = www and points to = @
-on my server I have the site running in /var/www
I've done some research and found that to run multiple websites I need to setup VirtualHost.
-So I created a folder /var/www/annarrankings.com and moved my site to that folder
-Edited Apache2.conf to add the following line
-I then went to /etc/apache2/sites-enabled and copied the default file to a new file called annarrankings.com. Here's the annarrankings.com file after I edited it
-I then created a link in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled to the annarrankings.com file in /etc/apache2/sites-available
-Next I editied /etc/hosts
-When i went to enable the site using a2ensite annarrankings.com I got the following
I figured this was ok since I had already created a symbolic link earlier (a result of trying to following multiple tutorials and ..... videos at once) so I reloaded apache2. I created an index.html file in /var/www/ just for testing purposes and when I load www.annarrankings.com I get the file located in /var/www/ instead of the website located in /var/www/annarrankings.com Do I need to change my A record or CName in godaddy or did I just do this completely wrong?

I have three computers in my network, but two will be mentioned. Computer A is a Linux Mint 9/Windows 7 dual-boot, and I have just installed Mandriva Free 2010.2, which I will call Computer B.
Now my main problem is that Computer B, while it can see and access Computer A's shares as well as the third computer, the aforementioned computers cannot access Computer B. The message was: "Unable to mount location/Failed to mount Windows share." Now, the SMB protocol was used because of the third computer and Computer A have Windows OSs installed in them.
What I originally wanted was that I can share Computer B's NTFS partition, namely Documents and Downloads, to the other computers. And I can't do that, because of the error message.
What I can do, however, is use Computer B to view shares from the other two computers (Computer A, as an example). By my experiences in Linux Mint, I understand that I'd have to mount my Windows partitions in order to share them. I don't even know if my NTFS drive in Computer B is mounted, though that is what was described.

I just made a Ubuntu Server install in a virtual machine and am having trouble setting up FTP to transfer files. I've installed LAMP and vsftp. The web server works great, but FTP gives a connection refused error locally and remotely from the host machine. 'Connection attempt failed with "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server".' nmap localhost doesn't list FTP as open even though I have vsftpd set to listen. I've tried restarting vsftpd with no luck.

My goal is to connect up a bunch of CentOS 5.6 servers to storage array which is running as an SRP target. These servers will be running eventually as Xen hypervisors. I'm using Mellanox Infiniband cards and a Qlogic Infiniband switch.
OFED drivers are already installed as standard. I have done the following.
1. Base install of CentOS 5.6 X86_64
2. Installed the following packages...
openib
ibutils
srptools
infiniband-diags
opensm
[Code]...
It works perfectly and connects to the target immediately with great results. I'd just like this to happen correctly on startup.
To work around the issue I have added the line srp_daemon -e -o into the init script for opensm /etc/init.d/opensmd but it doesnt always start the srp_daemon process. Its rather hit and miss
I'd really like srp_daemon to run as a service with a proper init script but I wouldnt know how to write one. I understand that this issue has been addressed in the RHEL6 srptools package but that doesnt help me because the software I intend to use on these servers specifically requires 5.

Is there a hidden file (or folder) or something like that in my home folder I can copy over to another Ubuntu machine to duplicate it?
I'm looking at settings like theme, colors, menu transparecies, etc.

I'm a very inexperienced Linux user, just getting started, so bear with me. I was able install the printer drivers for a Brother network laser printer (HL-5370DW) and would like to install the drivers on a few other computers on my small home network. Is there a way to automate this process by pushing them out to the other computers, or should I just manually install them? It wasn't difficult, just wondering if there is a slick way to do this.

I am setting up my home network. Currently, I have one computer (Munchen) which I have set in my router to receive SSH requests. This works just fine; I can SSH into that box from anywhere. I just put together a new computer, which I want to be a file repository, my ftp server, my http server, etc. What I would like is to be able to SSH into that machine from anywhere, then SSH into the other computers on that network from there.
Here is where I really don't understand the concept of what is going on. I can SSH past the router into one computer just fine either from anywhere (that makes sense to me). I can SSH from my new computer (Chemnitz) into Munchen (which is where the router points to and is running sshd) by using its local IP address, but I can't go from Munchen to Chemnitz (even though the server is running and the firewall should be allowing the connection). [URL]
Details of the system setup are below.
Munchen (receives all port 22 requests now)
Ubuntu 10.04
Chemnitz (I want to receive all port 22 requests and SSH into other computers on the network from it. Ultimately it will be a file sharing box, hosting a webpage, running an ftp server, etc.)
Fedora 14

I'm trying to write a mass reboot script in the event of a power outage (servers go to UPS for some 15 minutes or so and shutdown uncleanly). What I have is a set of 6 common passwords which will be prompted for per ssh connection, is there any way I can cycle through this password list
Code:
#below is an example of how this is constructed, IP's are used instead of hostnames due to the possibility of a DNS server being offline.
SERVERSRM1="1 2 3"
SERVERSRM2="110 120 130"
For i in $SERVERSRM1; do ssh -n root@192.168.0.$i "hostname && shutdown -y -i5 -g0"; done;'
for i in $SERVERSRM2; do ssh -n root@192.168.0.$i "hostname && shutdown -y -i5 -g0"; done;'
Each time the code is executed I'm prompted for a password (it's always one of 6 passwords). It would be quicker to have the passwords be cycled through.
I realise this is basic code at the moment but it will eventually allow for a specific set of computers to be shut down based on what power supply they're using. Authorized keys not really an option given the scale of computers (some 300 or so).

I will cut to the chase. I am running three ubuntu computers on my local network:my desktop which runs ethernet, and two laptops which run wireless on the same network, and all from the same router. For purpose of this thread, I am concentrating on this one issue with pulse(assuming its pulse doing this). When I have two computers running at the same time, or even all three, I can hear bursts of sound coming from the other computer, not all the time, but consistently. I don't know what is causing this. I've searched hi and low in all ubuntu pulse audio forums and those mentioning pulseaudio and I have not seen this issue posted anywhere. Most threads deal with issues of not being able to get pulse to recognise audio from one computer to the other...mine is just the opposite...I'M TRYING TO STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING!...... If I'm listening to my music on my desktop, I don't want to hear what my son is playing on his laptop...and vice versa. all the computers at my home are running lucid lynx, latest updates and latest approved kernel as of the date of this post. 2.6.32-26-generic.

I want to be able to access my desktop from work so I first set up a DNS. I can ssh into my own computer and using the ip address but when I try to ssh using my DNS (this is from my home wireless which is Linksys E2000), I get the following error:
debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config
debug1: Applying options for *
debug1: Connecting to ****.com [74.79.145.28] port 50000
debug1: Connection established.
debug1: identity file /home/andy/.ssh/id_rsa type -1
[Code].....
I set up the settings on the Linksys to accept DDNS but I am thinking there might be something else I overlooked? I do not understand completely what is happening to debug this. It seems like it initially accepts the connection and then something strange occurs.

Is there a work around for this issue at all(without killing the original instance") ? The reason I do not want to kill the app because there might be 2 users connected to the same machine that might be using the same app.

I am currently trying to figure out what's the best way to backup several PCs (about 5 computers each with Windows 7) from my family.
As I want the same solution for all Computer - I set up my old computer (Windows 7) and added some hard drives and there should now be enough space to backup the data of everyone from my family via the network. (Lets call this computer "Server")
But now I am wondering whats the best way to do this? What I do not want:
I do not want to start the Server each time manually when a computer tries to backup. (I thought about using WakeOnLan.. but I do not know if this is a good idea) I do not want the Server to run permanently I do not want to make the backups manually they should backup about every week automatically.
So which Software on the Computers / or the "Server" would you recommend?
Or would you eve recommend me to use Linux on the Server? If so, which Software would you use then?

I have recently set up a network of 21 computers running Edubuntu 10.10 I use iTalc to communicate with the pcs and also to shutdown all of them at once. The only problem I have, is it doesn't start up again with iTalc. So I switched to ClusterSSH. Only problem I have now is that everytime I run cssh, I need to manually add IP addresses of all the pc's, before I can start issuing commands. Is there a config file or something I can populate with all the IP addresses so that it starts up with all of them already added? And while we are at it, the command to start up a computer on the network?
