My computer runs Karmic and has quit booting when it is plugged in. I was told it was the AMP needing updated. How do I do that? I do the updates from the update manager, does this mean I missed the AMP update or is it done differently than through the update manager.
View 1 RepliesAm running karmic on a P2-350 Mhz with 256 Mb RAM. Yes, I know this is an old computer, but it has been very good, performance wise, since versions earlier than 8.x I think.
But now, after a fresh install of karmic, it is very slow at everything. Checked system monitor and CPU is constantly running at between 95% and 100%
I finally got my new internal hdd for my laptop. I plugged it in and installed windows 7 64 bit. Then I partitioned my external hdd (WD mybook 640gb), and installed ubuntu 9.1 on a 200gb partition of it. The problem is that I didn't unplug the internal hdd before I installed ubuntu. Now the computer will not start unless I have the external hard drive plugged in.
So what should I do so that I will be able to go into windows 7 normally if the external hdd is unplugged? I would also like to be able to use ubuntu when I plug in the external hdd. I wouldn't mind having to go to the boot menu and choosing the external hard drive every time I wanted to use ubuntu.
The reason I partitioned the external hard drive was because it has a lot more space than my 250gb internal hdd, and I also wanted to leave space open to use as was intended, to back up stuff.
However, now that I think about it, I wouldn't mind partitioning the internal hdd and just leaving the external blank (which I should have done in the first place).
i had a system running ubuntu karmic and grub2. Last day i installed fedora 12 on another partition and also installed the older version of grub that came along with it(because i was more used to it). The current status is:1. can boot into fedora, cannot boot into ubuntu.
2. can boot into fedora, chroot into the ubuntu partition
3. no data loss
However, i just can`t boot into ubuntu from the older version of grub which i have presently. Question is: How do i boot into karmic from the older version of grub? do take some time off and reply of you know the answer!

I did the install from the 64 bit edition Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala iso file and when I restart is gives me the no root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu. Unfortunately I don't know if it means the window installation or the Ubuntu one. I also don't know exactly how to get to it if it isn't the windows one. I also want a triple boot with Windows XP Professional SP 3 32 bit.

I just upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic, but once I loaded Karmic and rebooted, my computer will not complete the boot up sequence and go into any desktop. It starts the initial boot sequence with the mouse appearing and then goes to the screen that looks like it has an atom cloud. After that, the screen goes black and the mouse-arrow turns into that white rotating wheel, but it stays that way. It never actually goes into any type of operation! I tried to go from the command line and find Lucid to overlay it on Karmic and hopefully solve the problem. It just looks like to me that several of the packages I downloaded through my upgrade manager were corrupted. My computer doesn't even seem to be acknowledging my password because it gives me an error 32:must be authenticated.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI been meaning to install some linux distro on my external hdd to enjoy the renowned desktop experience, so far I installed sabayon first but it wasn't working very sharply and a friend of mine recommended me to just install ubuntu. Anyhow, since the first time I installed sabayon I could not boot vista when the external HDD is not plugged in. I get a grub rescue command prompt. I don't have a vista cd because my laptop came with the whole recovery function installed on a vista partition. I can boot that from the grub menu, from there I did a boot system restore, but I still get the same error. I'd like to be able to boot vista without having the external HDD on of course.

I am attempting to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix (I even tried Ubuntu Desktop) off of a USB drive. I use unetbootbin to prep the drive, my BIOS is configured to boot off the USB Hard Drive, after booting up the computer I get a message that reads "BOOTMGR is missing, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" This laptop is currently running Windows 7 which, after removing the USB Drive, boots up fine.
I've seen other posts on this but they all refer to dual-booting and modifying grub configuration files. I'm not even to that point yet (and don't even want to dual boot, to be honest) - I'm just trying to get onto the "LiveCD" so I can format and install.
I ran update manager in 10.04 and after downloading/installing a few updates my computer will no longer boot. All I get when starting up is

so i have most recent ubuntu server installed (10.04 i believe) and currently i have a usb netgear WG111 v3 plugged into my computer server. However it does not supply internet. I was told to edit the /etc/network/interfaces file and put in

I'm running a Minecraft server off of a dell T110 with Ubuntu 10.1 installed, as I haven't had a chance to install Natty yet. The problem is, it's running very very slowly, past the point where I could say it's the hardware's issue.
I have an intel xeon (2.4ghz quad core) in there, with 2gb of RAM. 2gb isn't much, but the computer runs slowly even when the MC server itself is off.
I'm talking super super slow, like, the cursor doesn't even show up all the time. It disappears frequently and things take a while to render/open, a site like facebook takes about 20 seconds to completely load.
This is my first ubuntu install, so I'm kind of new to it. The only problem/solution I could think is that I may have installed the 32bit version on a 64bit processor. I don't think I did, butttt that's the only thing that occurs to me
I am a ubuntu user and I tried to install ubuntu on my sister's netbook too. The problem is that the netbook has a broadcom wi-fi n that is not supported by linux for now because I searched for drivers and other stuff an I found that it is not supported. After that I tried to format the disk and reinstall windows 7 but the problem is that the installation procedure gives me this error: "windows cannot be installed on this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enable in the computer's bios menu."

Obviously when I format the drive with ubuntu and I put it in the netbook it's not working, it stops at the logo and the only thing I can do is entering BIOS.

Before installing ubuntu the sistem had kaspersky antivirus and detected 1 Trojan, it could be that a virus destroyed the bootsect...I don't think so.
I have a 2-year old DELL XPS M1330. I used to have Windows Vista on it, but over time, I believe it became clogged with too many programs and so I wiped the hard drive and installed ubuntu 10.04 LTS about 2 weeks ago. However, ubuntu many times seems to run slower than vista did. I have 4 GB of RAM, an Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 (2.1 GHz, 3MB Cache, 800MHz FSB), 320GB HDD, 128MB nVIDIA GeForce 8400M. Ubuntu recognizes me as having dual processors at 2.1 GHz and 3.4GB RAM, but when I'm watching a simple video, whether online or locally on the computer, my CPU usage invariably jumps to 100% and it lags. Sometimes, even simple word processing makes it slow significantly.

The sound and network cards are integrated but I've tried disabling them from BIOS and the problem persists.
Note that I've tried Ubuntu (32bit and 64bit) and it also crashes about 30 seconds after loading the graphical interface (either installer or login screen). Fedora's graphical installer worked flawlessly, tho. I've also tried SLAX (using it right now) and it works without any problems.
I have headphones plugged into the computer but the sound is still coming through the speakers.

I successfully installed the OS on to my hard drive and booted up, following which I installed all of the updates and rebooted. After my first reboot I downloaded the 10.11 Radeon driver and installed it (because the 10.12 was having an md5 hash issue), the install was (supposedly) successful, but when I restarted my computer it first progresses to this screen (copied from softpedia) and then goes black for a second, and then returns to that screen and halts at the end of the progess bar and does nothing. I am looking for help to get back into my system.

Dropping to a shell!(initramfs)Happily, pushing ^D let it resume booting, but it kept repeating. After some study, I found the Lucid release notes that said "if you upgrade to ext4, you have to manually update Grub". A quick check showed that sdd was now, indeed ext4 - nobody told me! And, why couldn't it update Grub by itself? But, I dutifully ran grub-install and life went back to normal.
Until last night, when I updated the kernel, etc. with apt-get and restarted, and grub dropped dead:More googling turned up this solution, which I used with an install CD:http://tinyurl.com/2dhswzzWhich worked, but it brought back the first problem, and running grub-install doesn't fix it. So, what do I do now?
I seem to be having problems with karmic and perhaps GRUB2 sometimes when the computer boots after the GRUB2 screen I get a flashing cursor (underscore) and nothing happens. I end up having to hard reset. other times I'm using karmic and everything seems ok and then it suddenly freezes. I haven't been able to find a reason. Memtest seems ok too. which log file is likely to show me where things went wrong?

I'm unable to boot to X or (recovery mode).
I did try booting to a LiveUSB in order to run update-grub, but then it occured I have no idea how to do this from a LiveUSB that will affect the internal HDD installation?
So I'm currently trying to reboot from Live USB, but that just seems to have locked up the PC on the white ubuntu logo. I'm afraid to hard reset it (been doing too much of that lately). How long should a Live USB take to shutdown? (been about 10 minutes so far ). It's not a persistent LiveUSB as far as I know, and I basically just booted to the desktop and then start the reboot cycle as soon as I realised I didn't know what I wanted to do .
Getting a new computer today, as my usuall box is running karmic, will there be any problems?
Can i just take out, my drive with / and home on it, put it in and away we go or what? also what backup s/w is there to backup onto a hard disk.

I'm at the part where it say Who are you? and you type your username, nickname, password, etc. They all have checks, it says ready when you are, but I can't press forward. I can't do anything except go back which is to keyboard layout and location before that. No way to quit the installer or anything.
