I currently have my server setup with a web page and ssh. I am looking to find a way to access the internet from my work computer, but all proxies that I can find have been blacklisted...I can however access my home server webpage. Is it possible to create my own proxy so I can surf from my work laptop?

I'd like to use bittorrent for legitimate purposes (mainly linux distro based) but the powers that be have blocked access to bittorrent at my university. I have an ubuntu VPS that I use for odds and ends and was thinking that I could setup a SOCKS5 server on it. That way, I can input the SOCKS5 info directly into the proxy section of my local bittorrent application (Transmission 1.92 running on snow leopard) and be good to go. The problem, however, is that I cannot find a way to get a SOCKS server up and running on my VPS. I've heard that ssh can be used as a simple SOCKS server, but I've also heard that i may need to install a more complete SOCKS server such as dante. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got LAMP up and working and I'm currently hosting a joomla install on the server. I was wondering if there's an easy way to get a web proxy working on my site. I'd like to be able to use it just like you would at hidemyass.com. By simply supplying a url it'll provide the proxy services for me. I've looked through joomla's extensions library and don't see any extensions that'd provide that functionality. I was hoping that there'd just be some prepackaged web proxy application I could install.
Anyone out there know of any simple way of getting this up and running. I've looked at Squid but that looks like it's primarily a proxy server intended for internal network users. I didn't see any sort of web proxy feature to install on a web server there.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm new to linux, but enjoy using it very much, especially without a GUI, console is fun! I need to set up port forwarding. We have 3 servers, 1x running Ubuntu server 8.04 (used as transparent proxy), 1x server 2003, 1x windows xp.
The linux box has the following ips:
eth0 (internal) 192.168.1.5
eth1 (external) 192.168.0.7
Windows server 2003:
192.168.1.6
Windows XP:
192.168.1.9
Router:
192.168.0.1
The router automatically forwards specific ports to 196.168.0.7 (Linux eth0). From there I want to forward port 8585 to 192.168.1.6 and 3000 to 192.168.1.9. Is there a way that I can do this using iptables?
The commands that I think I'm gonna use look like this:
iptables -A FORWARD -s 192.168.0.0/24 -p tcp --dport 8585 -d 192.168.1.6 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A FORWARD -s 192.168.0.0/24 -p tcp --dport 3000 -d 192.168.1.9 -j ACCEPT
Would this be a correct way of doing it? My biggest problem is that I can't test it without going live, and if I go live and something doesn't work, the entire building will be left without internet, people will hate me. Also, The proxy captures all data on port 80 and forwards it to 3128 so that the proxy can monitor the usage, and a few systems runs fine with it, others however can ping websites, and internet explorer says "website found, waiting for reply" but the webpages cannot be displayed.
I have a few friends that have seen me bypass firewalls with a socks proxy (SSH). I explained on how it works and how secure it is for browsing the Internet and checking your email in public places. I had at least 6 asked me if I could set up an account on my server for them and they would pay me! Now what I wanted to know was how I can set this up in a server and website where they can register an account and pay me through PayPal! I don't need help setting up the site! Just on how to set up the server to automate this. What tools are needed (ex. ISPConfig, jailkit.... stuff like that?) I don't mind doing this manually but if I get more people that would like this I don't really want to do every single one.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWe currently have a SUSE Apache2 reverse proxy server setup to reverse proxy (proxy_mod) our GroupWise Web Access server. Our SUSE box is located at www.domain.com. Our GroupWise Web Access server is located internally and is called GWMail. We are in the process of migrating from Novell to Windows, so we will have an exchange server with OWA access running on a Windows Server 2008 IIS7 box. That one will be called EXMail internally. Right now when someone goes to www.domain.com/gw/webacc it goes to the GWMail internal server from the outside world. This was all set up by previous techs who used Linux more.
We would like to set up reverse proxy to be able to reverse proxy to the Exchange Server from the outside world. Unfortunately the snag we are running into is that Exchange needs to run on port 443, and forwarding to port 443 has been a little tricky. I've read elsewhere we need to implement a generic TCP proxy, such as IPtables. what we need to do to get our SUSU Apache2 server to be able to reverse proxy to our Exchange server on port 443. My ISP seems to be having some configuration problems cos of which I cant download certain files (mostly exe and msi and some rpm files) as the download either doesnt start (firefox download window showing "Starting..." all the time) or download gets stuck at some point of time.

I want to setup yum to use the IP of my college computer to download the packages.
I have a simple issue that I think can be solved with several different methods. I basically want to create a personal server solution that allows me to do two things:
1.) I want to be able to remotely backup data to my server.

View 7 Replies View Relatedi was tasked to setup a proxy server to block access to some websites. i'm using centOS 5 and Squid 7:2.6 STABLE21-6.e15...i appended the following and tested the configuration with the supposed server i am using and the it does seem to work but now i'm wondering how i can test it with a client computer..i have 2 LAN cards and i just connected the other to one PC (can a direct connection work or does it need to pass thru a switch or hub)...i just can't figure out how it should be... how do i configure the 2nd LAN card to use this computer as its proxy server?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm using a Debian box as a gateway. I'm planning on bridging my DLink 604T modem/router so that traffic on the LAN goes to my gateway (which only has one NIC). The Debian box is running a PPPoe application which I'm hoping to log into the ISP through the DLink. I plan to configure the box as a squid transparent proxy. Most Howtos I've seen use NAT with 2 NICs, eth0 for the LAN and eth1 for the Internet. Any step-through to set up NAT for this?

I have configured a squid proxy server with @2 eth in different network subnet and with site blocking and extn file download blocking. One eth0 for office wired network and another eth1 is for office wireless network for laptop use for guest and visitors.
The problem is [URL] is an Indian government website, which is not working though this proxy server and the Internet Explorer is getting very slow and freezing the computer. In alternate I have configured a another test server with squid proxy with out any security and test the same. the problem is still with the all the computer in the network. The above website is perfectly working with Gateway configuration in TCP/IP properties in Network Configuration in MS Windows XP computers but through squid proxy its not working.
I'm trying to pass multiple dpmains thru one ubuntu server to various hosts on my local network.

I have tried placing VirtualHost entries in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default and [url]and [url] both work but [url] gets forwarded to the c:inetpub folder on the IIS box.
I have a small home-office network. On that network I have two linux computers, one is a client the other a server.
On the server I have NFS Server setup and mount some NFS exports on the client computer.
On the server I have the firewall on and here it becomes a little tricky.
Since both the server and the client connect to the router the interface (eth1) is theoretically both an internal & external zone.
The router is commercial grade and therefore has a good firewall on it which is also setup. Therefore the firewall on the server is really more of a backup than a necessity. But that's fine, and by having the server's firewall on 'fail2ban' is able to work which I like to have working so I don't want to just turn off the server firewall even though I have good security from the router.
However, when I turn on the server's firewall, the client computer cannot see the NFS server when scanning for server -- done by: clicking on "Choose" next to "NFS Server Hostname" when adding an NFS share in the NFS Client in YaST. Clearly something is being blocked even though I have both "NFS Client" and "NFS Server Service" allowed in the server firewall. The Firewall config. files for these are below.
The Firewall configuration is pretty much "out of the box". That is I have the services I need opened up for the external zone, the other zones are left at their default which means the internal zone, although not used (i.e.: attached to any interface), is completely open.
The perfect solution I guess would be to setup my client computer to connect through a different NIC (perhaps eth0), make that the "Internal Zone" and therefore allow all traffic through to it while still blocking the server from the external zone. However, I cannot make that physical change to my network for now so I am looking for an in between (non-perfect) solution.
In this case I am guessing that means opening up extra NFS ports to the external zone so I have full NFS functionality. I don't mind this because like I said, the router firewall is the main line of defense anyway.
So, given all of the above could someone tell me what I would need to additionally open up in the server firewall to make the NFS server detection work on the client while the firewall was on. Or, if you have a cleverer/better solution without me changing my physical network that would be great.
Hopefully I have written this in enough detail and clearly enough so that all the parameters are clear but if not, feel free to ask me what you like and I'll try to make it clear.

I've read all day about doing this but each inquiry leads to discussion of configuring the router. I am also not network savy. I would like to set up an FTP server on my home computer (presently Ubuntu 8.10). I have only one computer. I am using DSL with my telephone line for internet connection. I do not use a router.
Is it possible to do this with no router and only a DSL ISP connection?
I'm trying to setup a vpn server so I can use my computer via phone. My phone only supports pptp, l2tp and l2tp/ipsec psk. I would like to surf the web, browse files etc. I've been using this guide [URL] but get stuck on the part.
Finally, disable and re-enable ufw to apply the changes:
sudo ufw disable && sudo ufw enable
I get the error:

Ubuntu lts server distro using on remote machine. i have remote site where internet access given via squid proxy. so when we enter in browser it start working internet fine. but on command line(bash shell prompt terminal) like wget,ping,nslookup,traceroute etc these commands does not work.

My home Internet connection is a 10/10Gbit fiber (soon to be upgraded to 25/25, I was told by my ISP).
How hard is it for me (I'm not too technical) to make my home server a proxy for surfing through when I am abroad?
The thing is: our national broadcaster (www.nrk.no) broadcasts live streaming TV, but only to IP addresses in Norway. When I am travelling abroad, I would like to use my home server as a proxy in order to be able to receive these streams as if I was on my home IP address (more or less like the services offered from the US in order to make it possible for non-US people to watch hulu.com etc.)
I would prefer a proxy setup, instead of slingbox or similar.
Im running Ubuntu 10.04, currently living out of the country from where my server is located. We have a 4 Mbps dsl connection that speedtests fine to the closest server, and if we test from our present location to the speedtest.net server closest to our server the speed is great as well. When I SSH in to my server and setup a socks 5 proxy the speed goes through the floor. We barely get .2 Mbs. Whether I use putty or terminal from our mac, they both get the same slow speed. I've searched the forums and google extensively, but I haven't been able to come up with anything yet.

I have eth0 which is where my internet comes in and eth1 which is my local network 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0.
My default firewall policy is to drop input output and forward, i have already set my firewall to accept and workout the squid and it is working.

I readed the Docs on the squid page but the above rules can't be reproduced to 3.1 and i don't wish to use such rules to make it transparent or hidden so i want some help to figure out why it inst transparent.
I have 4 servers running squid/3.1.1 proxy server. Since the latest version I can no longer FTP. I have posted this problem in multiple places but have received almost no response. I've found several other post to this problem throughout the Internet which have also gone unanswered. So, once again, I thought I'd give it a try. As I said "I have 4 servers running the newest version of Squid". When I try to access an ftp, any ftp, I receive an error (check attached image). This was never a problem until just recently. Squid should work perfectly find with ftp, it is not a strictly http proxy.
I turned my firewall off just to make sure, still had the same issue. If I jump directly on the server itself with no proxy settings set in the browser it will work fine. As soon as I set the browser setting to access the Squid software I get the same error. I've included my squid config (which is unchanged from the default settings), maybe somebody better versed than myself can point out an obvious flaw. Everything else seem to work just fine, it's only FTP that's a problem.

I've recently migrated my office PCs to ubuntu. My server doesn't server any big purpose but to provide Internet Connection to the rest of the nodes. Things were quite easier during the windows era using ICS.
Even in Ubuntu we were able to do it using the "shared network" option, simple & straight forward. But things got complicated only after installing "squid". Needless to say it brought in a lot of add ons as far as the http proxy serving is concerned & we are enjoying a better internet(http only) connectivity without any doubt. But we are not able to use our email clients, MS Outlook or Thunderbird
But to best of my knowledge squid strictly is a http proxy hence doesn't support handling requests on ports other than 80. (465 & 995 in my case)
Now I have two queries, 1. Can "Squid" really be used to do what I want here??? using iptables, port forwarding or any other mean
& 2. Can any one suggest a good pop3/imap proxy as good as squid is.
I am Install Ubuntu Server 10.04LTS and install 3 LAN Card. 1st & 2nd LAN are use ISP1 & ISP2 with public static IP and 3rd LAN connect with Local Switch. How to configure this server as Load Balancing Internet and configure Proxy Server with user authentication and user wise site blocking.
