I have recently rented a server which is running Ubuntu linux. I can connect to it through ssh. I've written a Java application that I would like to run on the server 24/7. How do I transfer the files from my computer to the server so I can run the program from the server?
View 11 RepliesI need to transfer some massive amount of data (2.5terrabyte, many files, directory structure) to a embedded raid-box which has a minimal linux on it (some custom distro from western digital). We tried rsync (version 2.6.7), but it crashes because the filelist is too big for the ram available (fixed in later versions of rsync, but I don't know how to update, it's not debian based and there are no compiler tools). We tried nfs, but the max bandwidth produced is around 1 mb/sec (cpu bound?), so it'd take around 3 weeks this way. Samba has problems with big files (and we have some 20gb files in there).
SCP isn't installed, and would probably also be cpu bound due to encryption I think. So the only option left would be ftp, we're currently trying using ncftp with the command "put -R /path/to/data/" , but it's been running for over an hour, eating up most of the ram, and not using any bandwidth. I think it is still building a file list or something. FTP already worked for a single 20gb file with acceptable bandwidth of about 12mb/sec. Does anyone know a better ftp program (for console) that can start transferring some data or at least display an estimated time for the copy-preperation?
I wrote a script to wake up my windows machine and do an rsync backup of some of my files. I wanted to make this command a accessible through local bin so I made it executable. However the problem is that when I copies files is copies them with root permissions and i can edit or delete them. How can I set the files so they transfer with the proper permissions for my Ubuntu user?

My main pc is this Fedora 10 pc. I have two other pcs that run different Linux distros from time to time. What is the basic setup to share and transfer files between the 2 or 3 pcs? They are connected through a 2wire modem/router.
Do I need Samba installed? or is that only if to need to network with a Windows pc?
I have Fedora 12 (with all the latest patches, including the 2.6.31.6-162 kernel) installed on a new Supermicro SYS-5015A-H 1U Server [Intel Atom 330 (1.6GHz) CPU, Intel 945GC NB, Intel ICH7R SB, 2x Realtek RTL8111C-GR Gigabit Ethernet, Onboard GMA950 video]. This all works great until I try to transfer a large file over the network, then the computer hard locks, forcing a power-off reset.
Some info about my setup:

I'm pretty sure this is an issue with the r8169 driver (what I'm seeing is somewhat reminiscent of the bug reported here). The computer will operate fine for days as a (low volume) web server, and is reasonably stable transferring small files, but as when as I try to transfer a large file (say during a backup to a NAS or a NFS share), the computer will hard lock (no keyboard, mouse, etc.) at some point into the transfer of the file. It doesn't seem to matter how the file is transferred (sftp, rsync to NFS share, etc.).
I use Ubuntu Lucid and use the terminal to access my virtual server (GoDaddy - Red Hat Fedora Core 6). Using the terminal and entering SSH [account name]@IP gets me there. I can manipulate the server then.
But how do I transfer files to/from the Ubuntu terminal to the Fedora server? I want to (using Evolution) email a file on the server to someone.
I just bought a HP 3085dx laptop with an intel 5100 agn wireless card.
The problem: copying a big file over the wireless to a gigabit hardwired to the router computer only gives an average 3.5MB/Second transfer rate. If I do the same copy from my wireless-n macbook pro to the same computer. I get a transfer rate of about 11MB/sec. Why the big difference? I noticed the HP always connects to the 2.4 GHZ band instead of the 5GHZ bands...

I am not getting any errors. I don't know why the bit rate is not known. My airport extreme base station typically reports that the 'rate' for the hp is typically 250~300MBi and about the same for the MacBook Pro. The hp is about 6 inchs away from the base station. Is there anyway to get the rascal to go mo'faster? Is there anyway to get the rascal to use the 5GHZ band.
Is there any application out there for linux that can notify me of when a new IP address connects or disconnects to my network?

I have a number of queries but will start with one. I presently operate 11.04 Classic (no effects). OS is NOT set up as dual boot. As I am considering purchasing a new Desktop, I am wondering what is the best way to recover such things as folders, Firefox bookmarks etc. for four users.
I do have a external HDD which I guess could be used for a possible backup if that is the way to go! The new computer will probably have Windows 7 installed with which I assume I would probably dual boot.
has been a very slow rate of transfer from the computer to the USB on openSUSE, and the pendrive to the computer is much faster, I've tested other distros and the performance was very good. this is from the version now in openSUSE 11.2 and 11.3.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to transfer a lot of data from my laptop to my computer. Both are running Ubuntu 10.04 and both have Samba installed, and folders are setup for sharing. The laptop has a 56Mbps Wireless G built in module, and the computer has a Airlink AWLL6075 Wireless N USB Adapter 300Mbps. (I got the USB adapter working with the internet, since there was an issue with it just working out the box)
I have a wireless network, since wired is out of the question. The router is a Belkin Play N600 HD if that makes any difference. When i try to transfer the files across the speed of the transfer maxes out at about 785 Kbps (My Internet speed is 7Mbps=875 KB/s). It seems that the file is being sent to the router and then the internet and back to the router and then my computer.
I figure that bottleneck is my Laptop at 56Mbps, but that still gives a theoretical max of 7MB/s even at a low connection/link counting it at 24Mbps would still be 3MB/s. I even tried making a wireless Ad-Hoc network to transfer the files but when i went to Network it wouldn't show any shares.
I'm missing something to make it go faster and i really can't figure out what it is, maybe because I am too close to it.
