OpenSUSE Network :: Create Network Bridge / Device Hooked Up Via Ethernet Had No Internet Connectivity?

Feb 25, 2011

I'm on opensuse 11.4 (11.3 won't work with my monitor).

My computer gets internet through wireless and I want to share that internet through its ethernet port. So far I've tried using Knetworkmanager to create a network bridge between my wireless and wired connections. I created a new wired connection and shared it using the ip address settings. I was able to get both connections active, but the device hooked up via ethernet had no internet connectivity.

I also tried this command:
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

but another test resulted in the same fashion (no internet on wired). I believe anything I add to /proc should have an immediate effect, correct?

Ubuntu :: When Ethernet Cable Is Plugged In / It Doesnt Work

Jan 27, 2011

When the ethernet cable is plugged in, it doesnt work. I have to unplug the cable, refresh the page and let it wait for the connection, after a second or two, i plug it back in, and it works. this works only for that page, which means only that page loads.. if i try to open another site or smthing else, it doesnt work and i have to repeat the exercise for the new site..i have to unplug, refresh and let it wait for connection and plug it back in.. The same thing happens if i try to download an application.. i have to first issue the command to download, and when it says "connecting to blah blah.." i plug the cable back in and it starts downloading, it doesnt work if the cable is already plugged it..!

Red Hat / Fedora :: Dell N7010 Ethernet Connectivity (13 X86_64)

Oct 25, 2010

There is no Ethernet (or wireless) connectivity for my new Dell N7010 with Fedora 13 64-bit. The drivers do not appear to be installed. Right now, the goal is to get the Ethernet controller (Atheros Communications AR8152 v1.1 Fast Ethernet) running. I have tried to install the AR81Family-linux-v1.0.1.13, but the tarball gives an error when attempting to extract it:

"tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors"

I also tried the compat-wireless-2.6 which also gave errors when trying to do a make:

"make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.33.3-85.fc13.x86_64/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [modules] Error 2"

here are the specific things MikeTbob requested be run (via his "wireless setup" link):

[Ron AT localhost ~]$ uname -r
2.6.33.3-85.fc13.x86_64

and the files lspci.txt, dmesg.txt and lsmod.txt are attached. Note that the command dmesg | grep firmware returned nothing. Also please note the website didn't like the dmesg.txt filesize, it was broken up into 4 separate files: dmesg1of4.txt, dmesg2of4.txt and dmesg3of4.txt<<< hit max file upload, so dmesg4of4.txt is in the reply to this post.

"Ankkanet") get another static ip address (192.168.0.12)

My /etc/network/interfaces :

auto lo

what could be causing wireless to disconnect when ethernet cable is unplugged?

Ubuntu Networking :: Laptop Locks Hard On Login Screen If No Ethernet Cable Plugged In

Jul 15, 2011

Acer 5250-BZ475 laptop, fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04. Boots up beautifully as long as an ethernet cable is plugged in. Otherwise, I get to the login screen and have just enough time to start typing in my password before the entire system hangs hard - no mouse, no keyboard, can't even get to a terminal, nothing. Have to hard power off the machine.

It seems to be a problem with the wireless card trying to initialize, but there doesn't seem to be a bios option to disable wireless on this laptop, so I'm a bit at a loss as to how to fix this problem. By the way, wireless works fine if I boot up with a cable connected - I can see all the wireless access points in my area no problem. I just can't boot without a wired connection, which makes my laptop more or less useless when I'm away from home with it.

Ubuntu Servers :: Run A DHCP Server On Home Network To Enable PXE Booting For Ethernet Clients

Feb 27, 2010

I'm attempting to run a DHCP server on my home network to enable PXE booting for ethernet clients, but I'm having quite a few issues getting it all up and running. I'm not entirely sure what is wrong, but I keep encountering errors in syslog as follows:

Code:

Feb 27 02:26:46 servnerr-1 dhcpd: Wrote 0 leases to leases file.
Feb 27 02:26:46 servnerr-1 dhcpd:
Feb 27 02:26:46 servnerr-1 dhcpd: No subnet declaration for eth0 (192.168.1.3).

[code]....

Networking is not exactly my strong suit, but I would like to get this up and running if at all possible.

Ubuntu Networking :: Dual Ethernet Networking - Lose Internet Connectivity?

Apr 18, 2011

I have a server with two ethernet ports. I configured eth0 to be static, set at 10.1.10.148. I plugged in another router into the other ethernet port in order to configure that router. I configured eth1 to use dhcp. Using /etc/network/interfaces rather than gnome network manager. When I did this, I lost internet connectivity (internet routes through eth0 of course)

- Why did I lose internet connectivity?

In order to recover internet activity, I had to disconnect the new router on eth1 of course, and do sudo ifdown eth1. That wasn't enough however. After rebooting numerous times and pulling out my hair, I finally tried configuring eth0 as dhcp, rather than static, and this fixed the problem.

- Why didn't sudo ifdown eth1 solve the problem? What information was saved between reboots that somehow remembered that I plugged in the new router? Because my thinking was if /etc/network/interfaces was identical, and the network topology was identical, after a reboot everything should be restored, but it wasn't.

Ubuntu Servers :: Backup Automatically When Hd Is Plugged In?

Oct 21, 2010

I have two shares in total and there are also two external hard drives. The server is used by two different organisations that are not supposed to have access to the data of the other one(at least not as normal users).he script I need should run in the background of the server and when a drive is plugged in, it should check, which organization the drive belongs to, and depending on who the drive belongs to, backup the respective share. When the drive belong to neither, it should just do nothing.Unfortunately, I have no clue about scripting and so this makes writing a script like that, at least for me, impossible. So I wanted to know if somebody could name some good websites for learning to write such a script or give tips.

Ubuntu Servers :: Usb Netgear WG111 V3 Plugged Into Computer?

May 29, 2011

so i have most recent ubuntu server installed (10.04 i believe) and currently i have a usb netgear WG111 v3 plugged into my computer server. However it does not supply internet. I was told to edit the /etc/network/interfaces file and put in

Code:
/etc/network/interfaces
auto lo wlan0
iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet dhcp
iface wlan0 inet manual
wpa-roam /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
wpa-roam-default-iface wlan0-default
iface wlan0-default inet dhcp

[Code]...

but i have no idea how to edit it properly let alone, And this assumes your wireless NIC is already supported and visible as wlan0. Could someone help me or perhaps walk me through the process to correctly set it up so i don't have to bridge my connection from my laptop please?

OpenSUSE Network :: Xen NAT Setup In 11.2 - No Basic Connectivity?

Feb 21, 2010

I am experimenting with Xen with the standard kernel (kernel-xen package) and utilities. I already got bridged setup to work with a single domU, but found out that because of my wireless card I cannot expect bridging to work when connected wirelessly. Now I am trying a NAT setup but I cannot seem to get any network connection from the domU to the dom0 and viceversa. Comparing the network devices and routing tables of others, I cannot see any problem.

The domU runs with IP 10.0.0.1 and the dom0 has a vif with IP 10.0.0.128 with a default gateway of 10.0.0.254. Pinging from the domU to the dom0 and viceversa does not show any traffic at all when I use tcpdump to monitor eth0 in the domU or the vif interface in dom0. It seems that basic connectivity of the vif interface and eth0 in the domU does not work. Any tips on how to debug this problem?

CentOS 5 Networking :: Static Ip - No Network Connectivity

Oct 27, 2009

I'm having strange difficulties in setting a static ip for my CentOS 5.4 installation. If I use DHCP everything is fine, but with a static ip I have no network connectivity. I have done this many times with RedHat/Fedora/Ubuntu etc. with no problems and now I have no idea what I'm missing or doing wrong. I have tried to set ip as 192.168.1.20 (anything below .100 will do). GW is 192.168.1.1 and NM is 255.255.255.0. This is all I have had to use with other distros, but now when I set these I cannot even access my routers admin page or ping it (192.168.1.1). (I just did this with Vista on my other machine and all worked fine).

Networking :: Network Server (DHCP) - No Connectivity To Modem

May 4, 2010

Basically, I wanted to use the Bootp (PXE) protocol to boot a machine (my laptop) from my network instead of using USB/DVD boot medias to reinstall if need be. My router being a piece of crap, I couldn't setup the DHCP server to allow PXE packets. Confirmed from the manufacturer that it is not possible. Well for a $140 router, you would expect the opposite. Anyways, here I am with a small machine setup with Slack, no desktop environment (only CLI) and connected to my router (which I deactivated the DHCP) so the machine can act as a DHCP server. It works very well. However, I would like to install a few other utilities into that machine and for them to work, I need to put the machine between my cable modem and my router. Basically, here's the topology from outside):

Internet (ISP) --> Modem --> DHCP machine --> Router (no DHCP - acting as a switch) --> computers & printers

The problem is that I cannot connect to the modem from the computers on the network. Also I cannot access the internet (go on the WAN side) from the computers. From the computers (namely my laptop), I can ping the router, but cannot ping the interface where DHCP broadcast. Also I cannot ping the modem. From the router (using the web config page), I can ping the DHCP broadcast. From the DHCP machine, I can ping the modem. In the DHCP server, I setup the eth0 (the interface where the modem connect to) as a DHCP assigned IP so it can obtain the IP from the modem. The eth1 (the interface where DHCP broadcast) is static. All my machines obtains a IP from the DHCP machine without a hiccup.
