I have this kind of problem , i want to browse a picture from my second drive . But i can't ? Why is that? I totally see the hard drive i can do what ever i want from the bar of linux, but inside the aMSN, i go change picture>browse and i try to find from the roll down menu, the "other hard drive" but it doesn't show me anything,it's just showing the local.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have recovered a whole dying hard drive using the command ddrescue, only 8192 byte out of 4.3 gigabyte are unreadable.I have used the command (gnu) ddrescue /dev/sdb DiskImage.img..But unfortunatly this way i have a full-disk image that is not mountable... ( or at least i don't know how to mount it ), and the disk doesn't seem to work anymore that good... ( crack crack crack... ).To see the partitions inside the "big" file, i have used fdisk -l, and damn there is only one partition, but how can i mount the content???
I know i could use photorec foremost or similar software, but since the disc image is almost perfect, i would be able to preserve file names, paths and dates...The last idea would be to mount it as a full-drive image with Virtualbox... But transferring data would be quite annoying.
Is there a way to run a non interactive program inside a virtual XP machine (virtualbox)?
I know that you can run programs on a remote machine if both machines are windoze, or if both are linux. but can you run one from the other?
I have set up a virtual machine under VMware Player 3.1.2 in Debian. Operating system of this virtual machine is a Windows Server 2003. I would like to periodically test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses. Obvious solution would be to install an AV software under this Windows Server 2003 installation. However, I was wondering, is this possible to use NOD32 for Linux or clamav in order to test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses? Is NOD32 for Linux able to detect viruses inside the .vmdk file?

View 3 Replies View RelatedOn a Linux CD/DVD, there are compressed filesystem images for the live version for KDE or Gnome for example, but they have no extension, but they are clearly an image file ( compressed filesystem images for the live version before installation ) !!
I was wondering, How do I mount these compressed filesystem images, after I copy the ISO content of the CD/DVD on my system .... I want to edit some files or packages and make some changes, like if I want to customize a live version of gnome for example ! ... ( I know you might be tempted to tell me to use KIWI etc to customize etc ..... ) ... but I want to be able to mount the compressed file system image, then edit it for reading and writing while it is in a subdirectory on its own ... i want to open it ! ... is there a way to do this ??? ... these type of files have no extension ...
i can open this compressed filesystem image then to edit for read & write ... before I roll it back again ..... If and when I succeed .... what should I watch out for ? ... will the same compressed file image but slightly modified work again ?
PS. that same question could be kind of translated or be extended like : how do I use unionfs/squashfs programs on the command line to mount these image files with no extension for read & write mode ???
I've been researching this all day with no luck thus far. Basically I need to cutoff port 21/ftp access from IP addresses outside of my local network. My local IP range is something like 192.168.0.100 - 192.168.0.150 -- so anything outside of this range would automatically be blocked.
Any IP address outside of this range would be denied as I use SFTP for remote access, etc. from home, etc.
I've researched IP tables, tcp wrappers, etc. but am still unsure which would be best for what is probably a simple fix.

I am trying to install a program on my Linux system (Fedora core 5) but it fails because there is no fort77 compiler. I know that I have working ifort on my system, but I need fort77. It looks like that the program that I am trying to install can also be compiled with g77, but again this one is also missing. how I can get these compliers and get them work on my system.

I was wondering whether there is an inbuilt logging system in UNIX?
I ran and installation and the program opened up automatically but I can't find the program executable.
If I could find a log then I could locate this file.
however I have an asus 1005ha with ubuntu 10.04 netbook and I cannot find a way to be able to switch BT & wireless on/off from inside the operating system... (only works, if I disable/enable it in bios before booting...)

I really want to make a copy of the system so i have a back up of the os. i have figured out that i can attach a hdd to the computer and copy the os via the command line with an ubuntu live cd but this only works as long as the computer that is receiving the backup is exactly the same or the same computer. I would like to transfer the image to a portable hdd then install the os onto virtual box ( a virtual machine). View 5 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to write a backup script that will do the following:
1) lock and flush tables on a mysql db
2) dump the db to a file
3) unlock the tables
4) rsync the file to offsite storage
It all seems to be going well. However, obviously I don't want to setup ssh to the storage server on another network as the root user without a password. so I am attempting to su as the backup user inside of the script but when I try to run the script everything happens as it should until I try to so.. then it jumps out of the script .. akss me to login as the backup user.. proceeds to rsync to the offsite storage it does all this and then resumes execiting the script. it is not going to be setup as a cron job. it will be executed manually. assuming that is the case, how can I get the script to run without prompting for a password?
Here is what I've come up with so far... assuming that the script is run as root and the identity of the backup user will need to be assumed inside the script without perstering the user to enter the backup user's password.

View 3 Replies View Relatedi'm trying to build a web server but I keep having a problem. Everything loads fine until I get to the "Install base system" part of the installation and it puts up a red screen warning me that the install has failed. My uncle gave me his ubuntu discs and even some different hard drives, but I keep getting the same problem at the same point of the installation. Here is the rundown of everything i did.
System #1 -
ASUS P5G41-M m/b with 4GB memory
Intel Core 2 quad q9300 cpu
two western digital 640GB hard drives
I was testing it out to run a raid 1 just to learn how to make a software raid array. its my first try at making a raid array. The first time i used ubuntu server 10.04 32bit and the system failed at the install base system point. I then used boot n nuke to clean the drives and tried 10.04 64bit. it failed at the same exact point. my uncle gave me 2 western digital 1.0TB hard drives and I tried again. I got the same results. At that point i gave all the hardware back to my uncle and he gave me a server board to try out because he bought it and hasnt touched it. so I built a second system.
