View 2 RepliesSo about an hour ago I put my computer on standby. For whatever reason I couldn't bring it back so I restarted it. It works fine except now Ubuntu has pushed my display down. This means that the bottom of my tool-bar on the bottom of the screen is cut off, and there's a black bar on the top. I'm using a T.V. screen so there is no way I can manually adjust it. I also plugged my desktop back into an old monitor and it was off-center downward too.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI run F15 on my desktop PC. I've run gkrellm on my desktop since FC5. This week I tried to add the gkrellm plugin gkrellm-freq via "Yum extender". The install appeared to be successful, but when I invoke gkrellm configuration gkrellm-freq does not appear on my list of gkrellm plugins. Also, gkrellm is not displaying the cpu frequency info.I use other gkrellm plugins (weather, sun) and they work fine.

I've been setting it up, but I was wondering if there were any applets that could display things like CPU temps (maybe even RAM usage? I'm thinking along the lines of the iStat menubar app, but of course I'm willing to try out anything). I tried searching the Software Center, but couldn't quite find what I was looking for. I was exploring the keyboard shortcuts, and I was wondering if there was a way to set a shortcut to empty the trash? Like in OSX they have shift+apple+delete.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 (64bit) on my laptop (Toshiba satellite L300 64bit) and have since had horrible issues with the machine overheating. When the system is idle, the temp is decent, a bit warm maybe. If I start browsing the Internet, temp goes way up. I cant watch more than 1 and a half minutes of a ..... video without the system's temp exceeding acceptable limits, and shutting itself down. I have tried both the 32 bit and 64bit versions of ubuntu 10.10, as well as a 64bit version of 10.4. same overheating issues with all of these.
I am 99.999999 percent sure that it is an issue with my laptop's cooling fan, as although it appears to be spinning, it is so quiet that I would think it was off completely if I were to not tilt the laptop back and check to see if it is spinning. Also, the speed of the fan does not change, regardless of the machines temp. Even before it shuts off because of extremely high temps, the fan is still running at that same speed. I am currently downloading fedora 14, a different linux distro, to see if there is any difference.
Pressing left, middle and right button of mouse at bottom and right edges or bottom left, top right and bottom right corners of the screen does not work with fittstool-2.0 on openbox in debian jessie with dual monitor.
Pressing left, middle and right button of mouse at top and left edges and top-left corner on the screen works correctly.

I am connected to a network with free traffic inside it and post-paid outer traffic. So I need a way to be able to separately monitor the download traffic from inside and outside the network. All the solutions I`ve found for now offer monitoring of ALL up/down traffic.
So, I want to get separate statistics on these:

I have an NTFS file system nfs-automounted on our RedHat servers. Users can read and write to the file system no problem, and can create new files, edit them, and delete them to their heart's content. The only issue is that utilities such as "dos2unix" cannot create temporary working files:
$ dos2unix events.0818.dat
dos2unix: converting file events.0818.dat to UNIX format ...
Failed to open output temp file: Operation not permitted
dos2unix: problems converting file events.0818.dat
This isn't limited to "dos2unix"; any other utility that creates a temporary working file gets the same problem. If I copy the file to a local file system like /tmp, it works fine. Here's the kicker: this works fine on Solaris systems. I can take the "dos2unix" utility over to a Solaris system that has that exact same NTFS file system automounted via NFS, and it works. No issues creating temporary working files at all.
I'm completely new to Linux. I'm having the hardest time trying to do the simplest things. I'm using Kopete and I was wondering if I can put the icon on the system taskbar by the clock? I can't drag it there, won't work. I also tried to right click the taskbar and open 'add new items' but Kepete doesn't show on the list.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am facing problem with the fresh installation of Fedora 11. (I have moved from Fedora 9). When I try to view videos on ..... or use the Cheese Webcam Booth, I get blurred lines on the screen and I am unable to see any video or pic.
Also I noticed that the when i go to System > Preferences>Display, it shows me UNKOWN MONIOR.
However, if I got to System>Administration>Display and enter the su password, it shows me correct monitor and the graphics driver.
I am not sure if my original is related to the Unknown Monitor.
I also tried to install Nvidia driver but it crashed the xserver and I had remove the driver.
My Monitor is LG 700E and Graphics card is from intel. as I am not able watch any video.
I want to move the system tray stuff (The wifi moniter etc..) to the bottom panel in xubuntu.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running Lucid Lynx 10.04.3. Sometimes when I boot the computer, my desktop icons are not there. I ended up looking for a solution, and found one:
1. Hit Alt-F2 and run gconf-editor
2. Go to apps/nautilus/preferences and check 'show_desktop'
However, show desktop was already checked. If I unchecked it, and then checked it again, the desktop icons appeared. Weird, but problem solved right? Wrong.
Sometimes when I boot, the desktop icons are gone again. This doesn't happen at every single boot though. When they are gone again though, I just have to go through the process again. Here's where it gets worse.
Also, sometimes at boot, both the top and bottom taskbars/system trays are completely gone, leaving just the desktop. Once again, this doesn't happen at every single boot. I can't really do anything, so I just reboot again and more often then not, things are back to normal. Or the trays are back, but the desktop icons are gone again.
The weird thing about this is it doesn't happen every time I boot the computer. So if there is a problem I just restart and things are usually fine again. However this is very frustrating, and NOT normal.
Also, because the default drivers for my NVIDIA GeForce MX4000 were not sufficient, I had to remove the Nouveau drivers and install nvidia-glx-96, which corresponds to the official NVIDIA Linux driver version 96.43.17. This is the latest driver version listed for my card on the NVIDIA website. I also had to downgrade from 11.04 because apparently the old drivers are not compatible with the new X Server version in 11.04. I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not. I'm wondering if maybe i should just get a newer card so I don't have to deal with the older drivers.
I'm running Kubuntu Meerkat. If I set skype to start minimized automatically, it seems that it's running but there's no way to get to it. It shows up in the process list but there's no icon for it in the taskbar or anywhere else on the screen. Even worse, I can't just kill and restart it; if I kill it, it just comes back. If I issue the skype command from the K menu or from a command line, I get a complaint that another instance is already running.
