OpenSUSE Network :: Can't Connect Via Pptp Vpn To Internet
Mar 15, 2010
since installing opensuse 11.2 KDE, is that I can connect to the local resources when I'm not connected via the pptp vpn to the Internet but as soon as I establish an Internet connection, I cannot. Under Windows and other distros I've tried, this has never been an issue, usually I can connect to either local or Internet resources, interchangeably. In a nutshell, I don't know how to troubleshoot this.

I have started a newly started a VPN-service with some friends and are offering both OpenVPN and PPTP-vpn.The OpenVPN works perfectly, but we have some problem with the PPTP.It is possible to connect to the VPN, but once connected you can't get any type of access to the outside world ( the interner ).I've googled (Ok, not I, but the tech-guy has) and havn't found any solution so therefor we try here.We are running Debian 5.0 on a XEN VPS.On the machines we've tested OpenVPN works like a charm.

I'm trying to connect to a Microsoft ISA PPTP server from my Linux box. The box I'm connecting from is itself a router. I have no problem connecting a Windows XP machine to the VPN via this machine. This is fine, but I would rather connect via the Linux machine, giving me far more advanced routing options (i.e. no to send every packet from the XP box completely unnecessarily via the PPTP tunnel). The Linux router is running Debian Lenny.
I've checked iptables. There were initially some issues. I've fixed those.
Invoking pppd from the console, I can see that authentication succeeds, but then some negotiation goes wrong and the server terminates the connection. Here's the output from pppd, with the more sensitive stuff removed:
Code:
<hostname>:~# pppd call <peer> nodetach debug
using channel 19
Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/2
sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xe3e45f75> <pcomp> <accomp>]
code....

I followed (or at least tried to follow) tutorials on doing this. I installed network-manager-pptp and tried to configure network manager to connect to a VPN. In the settings when I select MPPE with 128-bit encryption, after I've selected it and applied it, I check the settings and it's invariably unchecked. I tried using KVpnc after getting frustrated with network manager, and I can't seem to get that working either. I've been trying to search for info on this, and I can't seem to find anything on why I can't select MPPE with 128-bit encryption. That seems like it might be why I'm unable to connect to the VPN?

I've searched the forums (250 thread limit) for a fix on this, but all the questions seem unanswered or unrelated. My situation is this: I'm running Ubuntu x64 10.10 'Maverick'. I have a cablemodem connection for my Internet access. I have home network running on DD-WRT with the dreadful Linksys WRT54G series router.
My DD-WRT router is 192.168.1.1, subnet 255.255.255.0.
My Linux box is 192.168.1.61, subnet 255.255.255.0.
I have a VyprVPN connection set up successfully on Linux. Mostly everything works great, speed's fine, latency is what I expect it to be. Except... I also run an SSH server to remotely admin the box at port 22, an Apache server running over SSL at port 7001, and a Transmission web client at port 7002 (only secured by basic HTTP realms auth). All of these things worked before I got the VPN working, I'm of course using NAT at the DD-WRT router.
The endresult I am looking for, is to have the security and protection of the VPN (even if it's only perceived) for everything I do on this machine -- EXCEPT on Apache, the Transmission web panel, and the SSH server, which I want to access from the outside world. I have no firewalls running or configured, not even iptables, not even the SPI firewall on DD-WRT. All connections to the aforementioned services from the outside world timeout coming in to the Linux box. They all work from inside my home network (182.168.1.0/24). In case it's needed, he's my routing:

I installed 11.2 on an older HP Laptop which was running XP without any issues. Durring the install, the update processe failed (presumably unble to connect to respository). I am usind a wired connection and the nic is connecting to my router and is recieving an address via DHCP. I am also able to ping the workstion from the router's Web interface. However I am unbale to connect to the internet.I have turned off the Suse firewall via Yast and checked the settings against another computer running ver 11.1 .Everything appears to be correct but no joy.

So here is what I am trying to do. I want to connect my Open Suse 11 machine to the internet. I am almost there.
1. I configured my network card and eth0 is up.
2. I configured my DSL with user name and password and I am authenticated.
3. An IP address is assigned to me and the DNS servers are retrieved.
However I cannot ping or visit any website I use the YAST automatic configuration and kinternet to connect. Here are the gritty details
[Code]...
I do see that kinternet has trouble reading /etc/resolv.conf. It says 'permission denied' although read permissions are set on both /sbin/route and the path that it links to. This should not matter however since the existing entries are already there and valid. I also tried to turn off the firewall suspecting it could be a problem.
So I am being authenticated successfully ( verified with the logs ); assigned an IP; the route seems ok; firewall seems ok. But I cannot browse or do internet things I have been tweaking settings for 3 days now and all seems in vain. Do enlighten me on what I am doing wrong. I bet its something silly that I overlooked. I have had success configuring the same thing in red hat linux and browsing the internet without trouble. Is there something OpenSuse specific that I am missing ?

I just finished a brand new install of 11.2 on a workstation and it can't connect to the internet at all. I can ping Google and I can ping devices on my local network but I can't browse any web pages. I am able to ping the workstation with my windows 7 workstation. I tried disabling the firewall. I have it set to use DHCP.
UPDATE:
I can connect to google via IP. So it appears to be a DNS type issue, is there some settings I am missing?

installed openSUSE 11.3 and round that both wireless and ethernet connections could connect ok to my router but couldnt access the internet. I think its a bug because I didn't have this issue in previous versions of openSUSE.
The solution is to go into the ip settings in the wireless configuration, select the option to manually assign ddresses (not DCHP) and
- enter the ip address of your router in the default gateway and DNS server addresses
- manually assign an ip address to your computer rather than have the router do it
- it has to be in the same range as your router -n normally 192.168.1.x where x can be any number not already used.

I upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3, and now I can't seem to get my network/internet connection working. I am using a router and a cable modem, and the connection is of course DSL. I am using wpa2 for security. I can't even FIND where to enter my wpa2 key. When I upgraded from 10.x to 11.2, there was no such problem.

I have an Intel Mac that I recently added openSUSE 11.3 to to have a dual-boot system. This has been working fine for me for the last 5-6 months. Then on 1/18/2011 I shutdown my system and totally disconnected everything and moved it all out of my office, so new carpeting could be installed. After it was installed, I reconnected everything and confirmed that everything on my Mac side works just fine. Then I rebooted into Linux and everything worked until I tried to run Firefox to connect to the internet. I'm told every time that it could not connect to the server for whatever I tried to connect to. I AM NEW TO LINUX AND ANY KIND OF NETWORK/INTERNET PROBLEMS, SINCE I'M USED TO MAC WHERE EVERYTHING JUST WORKS. But, I did click on "computer" in the lower left-hand side of the menu bar at the bottom of the screen. This shows on the right-hand side under STATUS "Network: none" and then it states to click this to get it started or connected (I don't remember which) so I click it. This brought up a window asking me for my password and then a new window where it went through a checklist of things and presented me my network settings, which
means nothing to me. However, after this I tried Firefox again with not luck.

I cannot use the online update and any other web repository because I got the following error while using the online update:
Code:
Errore durante il download di (curl) per 'http://packman.iu-bremen.de/suse/11.3/repodata/repomd.xml':
Codice dell'errore: Connection failed
Messaggio dell'errore: couldn't connect to host
the translation is:
Code:
Error during downloading (curl) from 'http://packman.iu-bremen.de/suse/11.3/repodata/repomd.xml':
Error code: Connection failed
Error message: couldn't connect to host
I would point out that any other application that needs accessing the internet is working correctly.
