Ubuntu Servers :: Suplement GPU Processing Power

Feb 25, 2011

About 2 years ago I was trying to figure out a way to use high end GPUs to supplement server processes. I made a post about it:URL...It seems like somebody was able to do this and create a super computer which ran purely on GPUs:URL...It would be interesting to see if this was possible to set up the server kernel to use high end GPUs to add processing power. It should be possible as long as the kernel would handle this as it would a multiple core processor.

Ubuntu :: Processing And Power (i.e. Wattage) Requirements Of Software Programs

Jul 30, 2010

This question could well apply to any computing environment but as I'm using Ubuntu (10.04)I'm no power user but I recently installed a newer power supply, mostly for it's slightly better efficiency rating. It's the kind with multiple fan speeds and it increases cooling proportionally to the load being drawn.

So I've noticed, whilst using the standard "movie player" in full screen the power supply fan speeds up significantly, so much so that I need to increase the volume of whatever i'm watching. However, if I watch the same file in VLC no such fan speed up occurs. Now I realise this could be down to any number of encoding and decoding settings in each program but the quality of the output, on my fairly dated but still useable machine (P4 3.8 (from when clock speed mattered more than architecture!), and 1GB Ram), is equal to the human eye in both instances. Does this point to more efficient coding of software on VLCs part? Are there pieces of software out there which mean the same pc will use less power than if using similar software. If so, has such a list been compiled? I've not found one but I'd be interested in seeing one so my PC usage could be as green and responsive to use as possible.

Ubuntu Servers :: Php Webpages Not Processing But Downloading

May 29, 2011

I'm really desperate as I have spent the better part of the last 10 hours trying to sort this out before my boss finds out

When I try and browse to one of our websites the browser wants to download the file as the server will not process the php file. I get which is a: application/x-httpd-php

What's really odd is that from inside the network where the server is located everything works fine, its only from the outside that this happens?

Everything was fine until I ran an system update from webmin that updated a ton of things including Apache2 and PHP5.

Its a self hosted server that was running UB server 9.10, but I have since upgraded to 10.04.2 LTS but no luck.

Apache version 2.2.14
PHP Version 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.9
Joomla 1.5 -latest

Fedora Installation :: How To Use Processing.org's Processing-1.0.9 As Application?

Mar 1, 2010

New to Fedora (from Windows), I am up and running ok with packages from the repository but only half ok with Processing, the Java graphics programming front end from processing.org.Their download gave me a .tgz file which Package Manager extracted for me into a location of my choice and where there is now a "processing" shell script. This works ok and I have managed to create a launcher on the desktop. That starts ok but always with processing's default action of giving you a new and automatically named work file.In Windows an existing Processing file (.pde file) could be "opened-with" Processing. Trying to do similar in Fedora I find that I am expected to nominate an Application to open with but Processing has not installed as an application.I guess the question is how do I promote Processing to be an Application?Or is there a different approach?

Ubuntu Servers :: Low Power Home Server

Mar 1, 2010

I've been running my Dell SC440 as a home server/workstation for about a year now and whilst it can cope with both roles, it is power hungry, loud and does get a little slow down sometimes. What I am looking to do is create a home server to take away the need of it to be on 24x7.My requirements in a home server would include:

- Media Server (using TwonkyMedia or uShare)
- NZB Downloader (hellaNZB or sabNZB)
- AFP + NFS file serving
- rsync/unison for Linux backups and N900 media sync and backup
- Email/Calendar/Contacts hosting and sync (zimbra or zarafa?)

I would like to achieve this with an Acer Revo and a couple of 1 or 1.5TB external hard disks, I'm unsure if the Atom processor would be strong enough for all of these services, although I could test it using my netbook, if that can cope, the Revo would be able to easily.

Ubuntu Servers :: 10.04 LTS - CPU (Power Saving) For Home NAS

May 18, 2011

I am planning to make a home made NAS running ubuntu server 10.04 LTS. Nothing fancy, simple samba with open access for all and openssh for admin access over the network. The NAS will not have heavy traffic, two home computers with occasional access, just to serve as central location. I am in doubt which CPU to use and I am after both budget and power saving solution.

1. I have an old Athlon Clawhammer I can use but the TDP of 90W is putting me off. I can also use existing 2x512MB DDR-400 memory with it. The board would be new.
2. I would rather invest in new mini-ITX board with built-in dual-core Atom D525 (TDP 13W), VGA and Gb ethernet. I would add 2GB DDR3-1333 memory.

Since I would need a new board for the Clawhammer too (current one doesn't have SATA), I am more attracted to option 2. Would the dual-core Atom be enough running this simple home NAS? I think it should but my experience with ubuntu server is limited.

Ubuntu Servers :: Power Went Out, Now System Is Read Only?

Jun 15, 2011

I've done a lot of search and already kind of fixed part of the problem, so this is where the fun comes in. I went away for the week, and not until the day I got back I lost power while out, and my computer rebooted after the power outage to Mac osx, which it's supposed to do as I'm using a Mac Pro and have a regular version of OSX 10.5 on there and my ubuntu server. I restart my computer and I get a few errors and my raid5(3 1tb drives) doesn't mount and says read only for everything else. I finally found a way to remount that raid which while in root I could create new folders and move folders, but only on that raid. I wasn't able to do anything with my boot drive. The weird part is, that now I can't ssh into the server and webmin won't even load. I'm still relatively new(little over a year, but honestly, not much has gone wrong to need to troubleshoot) to ubuntu server, so I'm not that best at troubleshooting it. I won't be home till later tonight, but any tips/tricks/ideas I can try when I get home would be great, or if you need any info, I can get it to you.

Ubuntu Servers :: After A Power Outage, Server Gets Hung In GRUB?

Feb 10, 2010

When power was restored after an outage, my server (running Ubuntu server 9.10) started back up & got stuck in the GRUB menu ("Version 1.97~beta 4" I think) - it didn't do that countdown & auto-select the top item like I'm used to. Just stayed there, and since the server is headless, I had to dig out my monitor & hook it up to see what was wrong.

Ubuntu Servers :: Apache Restart Fails After Power Loss?

Oct 25, 2010

I have observed a problem twice now with Apache trying to restart but hanging somewhere in the process. This happens after a power failure; the machine comes back just fine, but not the web server. The machine is on a UPS, but occasionally it runs out of "juice" before someone can get to it (we have a generator for emergencies). When this happens, a ps indicates about three processes running that are trying to start Apache, but they just sit there - this time for three days since the power failure was on a Friday. I can fix this by killing those processes and doing an Apache restart - but that takes human intervention, which is not acceptable.

I suspect this may have to do with SSL, since when I do a manual restart it asks me for the SSL password. There must be some way around this so the system can recover on its own. This system's web site runs under SSL since it maintains medical information that must by law be protected. But it also could be life-threatening to someone if the system can't come back and as a result a person can't get help.

So I would appreciate some guidance as to what I could change that would allow for system recovery without intervention. I'm happy to provide any configuration file info, if you tell me where to look.

Ubuntu Servers :: Lost Months Of Data After Power Failure?

Nov 13, 2010

Running Ubuntu headless server 9.10 with a RAID 1 on ext3. After a power failure (UPS power button was hit accidentally), I logged into the system via ssh and found that I had lost all data since my last reboot, which was 4 months ago. It was as if I had a perfect snapshot of my machine from 4 months ago. Everything, database files, logs, all report as if the machine had been off for 4 months. Fortunately, I have quality backups of all my data so I am able to recover, but I have never had such a problem before and I cannot figure out what happened.

Ubuntu Servers :: Fan Control - Power-Noise Optimization On The Proliant DL120 G6 ?

Jul 12, 2011

I'm trying to get the HP Proliant DL120 G6 server a lot quieter after startup under Ubuntu Server 11.04 (x64).

For now, it seems like there is no fan control at all: when I start the server, the fans start running at max speed, then it slightly lowers to 3.5K-5K RPM. Once there, it never goes down or up. There's just no fan or power control at all.

In no specific order, I will describe as much as I can my situation.

The system is IPMI 2.0 compliant, so when using the ipmitool package I can get the values of the sensors like this:

Code:

I tried to follow the procedures for using the fancontrol package together with lm-sensors, as shown at [url]. One of the very first steps is to launch "sensors-detect", which gives:

Ubuntu Servers :: Can't Reinstall Mysql-server After Power Failure During Aptitude Safe-upgrade

Jun 2, 2010

A week or so ago I ran an aptitude safe-upgrade and while it was updating mysql I suffered a power-failure. Now, this never really happens in Holland but of course this once it happened at the worst possible time.

I've tried a lot of different things to get mysql working again, but am running into all kinds of problems. First mysql won't shut off properly (it does startup with the computer but I can't connect to it at all) during an aptitude purge. If I kill the process mysql seems to purge properly, but I guess this is not the case because I wasn't able to install it then.

Things seem to have gone a bit more smoothly this time, however:

Code:
snek@snek-server:~$ sudo aptitude install mysql-server

Ubuntu Servers :: Give Power Users Ability To Access All Of Their Folders Without Thrashing Security.

Feb 8, 2011

So, I am looking to implement an FTP server with Isolated Client accounts/directories where a client can only access what's in their directory. I also need to provide my internal user's (content managers) the ability to upload, delete, etc from all of the Client accounts. The simple part is creating the secure client accounts. It's a matter of changing DIR_MODE in adduser.conf to 700 or 770, creating a user, having the FTP server chroot them to their home directory, revoke/restrict shell/ssh access and maybe even slap on some ACL to prevent botched permissions. The hard part is figuring out how to give my power users the ability to access all of their folders without thrashing security.

My first thought was to put all of the client user-groups in a parent group and having my internal users inherit group permissions..but you can't have groups inside of groups. My second thought was to put all of the client users in the same group and prey that the FTP chroot is enough to keep them from poking around but then I have the problem of how do my internal users access other user directories if they are chrooted. Do I create a second server without chroot.do I create some weird nested homedir structure..I honestly have no idea how to satisfy both requirements (secure client accounts and privileged user accounts). I need my privileged users to authenticate against Active Directory via Likewise open, LDAP, etc and I don't care how the clients authenticate. Though, I would prefer to have both file and FTP-server level protection just to make sure no one can see the other client's data.
