Ubuntu Servers :: 10.04 Install - On Power Edge 1850 - Start The Partitioning It Hangs Up On 33%
Apr 20, 2011
Im having a bit of an issue installing Ubuntu Server 10.04 on a Dell Power Edge 1850. I am running RAID1 via the onboard PERC4 controller that is set to emulate MASS storage. I am able to boot from the disk and run through the initial setup, however, when I give it the go ahead to start the partitioning it hangs up on 33%. It does this on both the Guided full disk and guided full disk LVM. I have run a check on the disk as well as memory.

I need to setup a Intel Xenon power edge 1900 server, which fedora version (10 or 11) suits it best and whether I should go for 64bit or 32bit (If I go with 64 bit some applications wont support it). I also have another issue, currently on another Intel Xenon power edge 1900 server on which Fedora 9 32bit version is installed, tough the server has 8GB ram, fedora can access only 3.2 GB. How can I solve this issue and will it repeat in the new server where I install fedora(10 or 11).

Has anyone successfully installed openSUSE 11.2 on a Dell PowerEdge 1850 system?Undoubtedly, it wasn't wise to attempt to upgrade from 10.2 to 11.2 but I was forced into it by a security audit of DMZ systems. It didn't go as smoothly as the jump from 9.3 to 10.2.I've spent the better part of a week getting an openSUSE 11.2 system installed.I went back to reiserfs and managed to get through and apply all the updates to openSUSE 11.2 today. When I got to the final reboot, it failed when I attempted to log into the system.Basically, the keyboard and mouse became inoperable. The only way out of this situation is to mash the reset button.
Rebooting into safe-mode and adding level 3 to the safe mode boot options, I get to the point of starting sshd when the lock-up occurs. It looks like X11 is the culprit.Booting a forensics DVD, I find that there is an xorg.conf.installation but no xorg.conf file. The ATI Radeon VE chip set is used on the PowerEdge. From another openSUSE system that I haven't upgraded, I see that X11 was configured for VESA mode. This is, probably, the mode that is needed as console access is, normally, through a KVM.Can anyone provide a way to get past this problem with a workable keyboard and mouse?

Just bought a new computer that I will use as server:
Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H motherboard
AMD Phenon II 1090T
16 Gb RAM
4 x Seagate 2Tb hard disks
I tried to install Ubuntu server 10.04 and 10.10, both 64 bit, having similar results. Also I have tried enabling and disabling the RAID card. On 10.04 installer hangs preparing disk partitioning phase at 43%, on 10.10 hangs at the same stage 45%. Must I download something and apply before that phase?

I've not jumped on the Alpha/Beta upgrade's this time round so have decided to upgrade by doing a fresh install. I'm using the normal desktop install cd via usb. On the drive setup I choose to manually setup the partitions. I deleted the partition which help Lucid. Created a new partition with the root path. All good so far. I selected my home partition and selected use as 'ext2', entered /home as the mount point. Clicking ok to return, showed the /home partition as marked to be formatted, I was unable to change this ... so I decided to quit the installer and reboot ...
1st problem ... the root partition for Lucid was deleted, and a new empty partition created, despite the fact I had not confirmed the actions.
2nd problem ... rebooting with the live cd (which I'm on now) and running the installer, it hangs when I select manual partitioning.

I'm running 11.04 on my Dell SXPS 1645. Today I unplugged my laptop from AC power a few times and after about 10 minutes, Ubuntu would hang, not responding to anything. Frozen mouse, frozen keys. The ONLY thing I could do to get it out was to do a hard hardware restart by holding down the power button.
It happened twice on Skype (and I thought it was just the buggy 2.2 beta that was hanging my beautiful OS), once while installing a printer, and once while I was just futzin around on firefox.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 otherwise flawlessly on a 2007 core 2 duo Macbook. Right now its set up to triple boot with OS X Snowleopard, Windows 7 Ultimate, as the other operating systems. I'm asking because I'm frequently having to force my system to power down after shutting down from Ubuntu, and I'm concerned that I could be corrupting files and damaging my hardware.

When the pc is powered up it takes ages for the login screen to come up and after that it hangs then comes up with a power manager is not responding fault, when I get into the desktop it takes ages for the top bar to appear and I noticed that the wireless usb dongle takes ages to connect. USB hang at boot? I have recently installed a usb printer. Weirdly a reboot fixes the issue, it seems to be at times the very first boot up where the problem arises.

I have an Areca hardware RAID array that I'm trying to format & partition on a fresh Ubuntu 10.04 LTS installation. The OS drive is not on the RAID card, it's entirely separate. The RAID is a 6TB volume so I realize I have to use parted to format it, not fdisk (which I've always relied on).
My problem is that I can't figure out how to get parted to like my settings. It seems like everything I try gives me the warning "Warning: The resulting partition is not properly aligned for best performance." Here's what I'm doing:
Code:
(parted) p
Model: Areca ARC-1280-VOL#00 (scsi)[code].....
What start/end settings should I use to get a properly aligned partition? How do I know?I have tried a mix and match of 0, 0s, 1, 1s, -0, -0s, -1, -1s, 100% for my start/end with no success.

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on a HP Pavilion p6565uk.
My PC is x64 compatible, although ubuntu will not install.
I don't get to any gui, it says ubuntu will continue install in 5 seconds, at 0, nothing happens. The CPU light is flashing, but nothing happens.
After about 10 minutes, it reboots, but when the HP splash screen shows (Before the boot selection screen) it just hangs. I have to do a hard shutdown to boot back up.
I am using wubi for install.

i recently bought a pre-Win7 loaded netbook, and soon discovered anytime i moved a window and even accidently bumped the top edge of the screen the window would instantly pop to full screen side to side and top to bottom..i figured it was just another Redmond 'innovation' and just got in the habit of not bumping the top..but, now on KDE i see exactly the same behavior...is this something new in 4.6 or, is it just on this machine (maybe a BIOS intercept) or what the heck is it??
i have looked for and not found a way to turn off this abomination in user interface 'innovation' in either openSUSE 11.4 or Lose7..(i'm kinda tired of having to click it down from full screen--this is a MULTI-threaded system and i do not use just one app at a time..)

I am trying to install a Hauppauge 1850 video card into Linux Home automation system (LinuxMCE) which is based on Ubuntu Intrepid (I can't upgrade the kernel since this is what the LinuxMCE distribution supports)I am feeding analog signal to the video card, either through a coax analog connection or an RCA analog connection. I cannot see any picture from the card (I verified that the video card is working properly under a Windows Vista OS)I am trying to use the video card using a lightweight application such as tvtime, xawtv. In all applications I am failing to see an image. (For example, tvtime shows the message "No inputs avialble Cannot open capture device /dev/video0". Right clicking on Input configuration / Change video source doesn't give any options)

I've got a Lenovo Thinkpad X201i. The problem I have is (since I've installed Xubuntu) every time I start up my laptop it just hangs with a little flashing white stripe in the top of the left corner (like every start up). Then when I shut down the laptop using the power button and start it up again it works. How can this be possible? On start up, it hangs, while on the restart it always works. Which means I have to restart my laptop every single time.

And another thing, sometimes the launch-bar dont auto-hide when my computer has been on for while. I need to log out and in before it hides?

I am using Ubuntu 11.04 and it hangs as soon as I start to enter my password on the login screen. The way I am currently booting up is using failsafeX which is leading to no sound on my laptop.
I tried deleting .gconf/.gconfd/.gnome2_private/.gnome2 folders and it didn't help
This is the output to the lshw command: [URL]
I put this up since I have no sound on my system in ubuntu ( no effects mode ) and now even on Windows there is no sound (strange)
I also tried deleting the /config/autostart/* files and it didn't help.

When I try to bring up my wi-fi PCI card (ifup wlan0 or ifconfig wlan0 up) my whole PC just hangs until I power it off.
I believe I have the right drivers, but cannot see what I am doing wrong.
I'd really prefer not to go down the ndiswrapper route.
Firstly, I can see the PCI card and the driver it is using :
Code:
[J@gx260-f10 ~]$ lspci -k
...
...
01:08.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8185 IEEE 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 20)
[Code]....
the PC just hangs for ever. No mouse movement, ctrl-alt-del, nothing.
I have downloaded a Linux driver from Realtek but it will not compile. I have the latest kernel-devel, headers, and gcc. I can post compiler errors if anybody would like. They're all apparently to do with missing parameters.

I am currently running all my applications off a HD as I was unable to install the grub bootloader on my ocz pci express card (grub won't install on the pci express card as it is a raid0 array). I would like to use the HD for backup only and run everything off the ocz card - with the exception of booting (which is unfortunate but I didn't manage to make the pci express card boot). How is it possible to tell suse during the installation to create the /boot on the HD and the rest on the pci express card and also to allocate the remainder of the HD as empty storage area??

Before to describe my problem I want to say that I searched a lot on the internet and I think I tried all the solutions provided by other users to similar problems.
I've got an IBM xSeries 346 server running CentOS 5.5 with all updates applied with yum.
The video card is an ATI Radeon (lspci says: 01:06.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE]).
Everything worked fine until a bad day where there was an environmental power failure and the server crashed.
I turned it on, I manually check the file system, some files went lost and after the reboot the X server didn't start.
After the first boot I had problem with /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit, sbin/multipath.static and /dev/cpu/microcode, I solved them and now the message it shows is:
"Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface) It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?"
I choose OK and it appears an empty log, if I go in /var/log/gdm and I do an ls -al:
total 0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 28 04:44 :0.log.4
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 28 04:44 :0.log.3
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 29 04:52 :0.log.2
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 29 04:52 :0.log.1
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 29 04:52 :0.log
So a lot of empty log files.
I press enter on the OK that appears at the bottom of the screen and it says: Would you like to try to configure the X server?
I choose Yes, I enter the root password and appears the following messages:
Couldn't start X server on card 0
Couldn't start X server with old config, trying with a fresh configuration
Then another messages:
Trying to restart the X server, I press enter on OK and it loops the initial message ("Failed to start the X server...)

Using a multitude of different programs, including the one the official site recommended, it always hangs at this screen with a blinking cursor:
Code:
SYSLINUX 4.02 2010-07-21 EDD Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al
how do I get past this? What's going wrong here? I checked the md5sum of the iso and it matches up with the official one.
Edit: I know the flash drive isn't at fault, because I've used it as a live USB for 10.04 and several other distros.

I am having a RAID5 with a spare(total 4 disk).then the steps which lead me to a problem:
1. i was doing I/O on the array.
2. i pulled out a drive manually. So the spare drive took care of the failed one and started rebuilding. then
3. in the, mean time i pulled out the power plug of my NAS box.
4. After power up i saw my array was not active(by -D command option of mdadm). then
5. i executed: mdadm --assemble --scan /dev/md0 it gave me
I checked into the linux source and found that bd_claim is a function inside fs/block_dev.c and it failing due to which lock_rdev function (calling bd_claim in md.c) is failing and we are not able to start the array.I don't know why my RAID is not live after power on.
Plese help atleast can i save my data?
