Ubuntu Servers :: Fan Control - Power-Noise Optimization On The Proliant DL120 G6 ?

Jul 12, 2011

I'm trying to get the HP Proliant DL120 G6 server a lot quieter after startup under Ubuntu Server 11.04 (x64).

For now, it seems like there is no fan control at all: when I start the server, the fans start running at max speed, then it slightly lowers to 3.5K-5K RPM. Once there, it never goes down or up. There's just no fan or power control at all.

In no specific order, I will describe as much as I can my situation.

The system is IPMI 2.0 compliant, so when using the ipmitool package I can get the values of the sensors like this:

Code:

I tried to follow the procedures for using the fancontrol package together with lm-sensors, as shown at [url]. One of the very first steps is to launch "sensors-detect", which gives:

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Low Power Usage / Low Noise Hardware For 5.3 Recommendations?

Apr 12, 2009

I'm looking at various low power consumption system options for running CentOS 5 on. The goal is to get a system that draws 20 watts or less, is silent (but I'll settle for very quiet), and is fast enough to be a light duty server. The kinds of things I envisage for it are low volume mail, http, ftp, subversion, ssh, maybe samba, and perhaps asterisk if I get enthused enough. Wireless network support isn't something I'll need and realistically the system is going to spend most of its running life being idle. I don't foresee any particular need to run X on it as I imagine that if I ever need to configure something graphically I'll do so by forwarding X over ssh.

I'm leaning towards the Asus Eee Box B202 as it's readily available, seems to be in the ball park of what I want, and I see on the forums here that other people have had success running CentOS 5 on it. Still, I'd prefer a silent system (though I suspect silent systems may only be available at a premium). So I'm after war stories and recommendations. What other low power systems have you run? For the Eee Box B202 or other system what kinds of real world power usage figures have you seen with CentOS when idle and when under load? Did the system perform below your expectations? If you needed to change the hardware (say, replace or upgrade the hard drive), was that straightforward or was it a chore?

Debian Hardware :: Microphone Noise - Small Red "x" On Volume Control Recording

Apr 5, 2011

when I try to make a recording in my laptop (integrated mic), I am able to hear myself (when I reproduce it afterwards) but with a lot of noise. I read a solution of going to alsamixer and disabling "L-R" in capture, but when I do that,I am not able to hear anything. Another thing (I don't know if that has to do with it) is that when I go to volume control->recording, every time I see a small red "x" in every mic (microphone, capture, internal mic) and if I enable them, close and reopen volume control the same "x"s appear.

Ubuntu Servers :: Streaming From HP Proliant Dl360G4P

Mar 5, 2010

I currently have my ftp server running off of my hp dl360. Ubuntu 9.10 server. I cannot seem to stream anything. I can use WINS and mount the share and then watch videos over my LAN like that but I want to stream my media over the internet, I already have a domain and NAT 100% set up with port forwarding. The snag I am hitting is I cannot seem to get streaming to work over the net.

the stats on the DL360g4p (1u rackmount) are as follows
1x Xeon 3.08GHz - 512MB cache
2 GB RAM
2x 300GB SCSI @ 10k RPM in raid0.
gigabit NIC
ubuntu 9.10 server

All web(http/ssh) traffic is forwarded to seperate ubuntu server VM running ontop of ESXi on a different 2u HP proliant dl380g3. All ftp/smb traffic is forwarded to the 1u dl360. I have tried vlc -I http (port 8080 redirected to ftpserver) under a detatched screen window and it failed to initialize video driver. I have an entire Directory that I would like to make available to stream.

Ubuntu Servers :: Installing 10.04 On Proliant 3000?

Jun 26, 2010

I got my hands on my first real server hardware yesterday - a PIII 600 MHz COMPAQ Proliant 3000 with 1.8 GB RAM, Smart Array 3200 controller and 4x18.2GB SCSI ULTRA 3 hard drives. RAM is upgraded from original and USB card added - otherwise hardware arrangement appears to be original.

Minimal 10.04 installed (35 minutes boot to boot) as Server 10.04 could not detect CD drive. My problem? Everything works but it does not look right. Probably my bigger problem?? I know almost nothing about RAID and the more I read the more ethereal my understanding seems to become.

When installing, I chose to install with LVM on c0d0. Grub written to MBR. I have posted df -l, fdisk -l and lshw output below. Would someone tell me if this looks correct and, possibly, offer some pointers if it does not.

Ubuntu Servers :: Installing 10.04 On A HP Proliant DL180 G6?

Nov 2, 2010

installing Ubuntu 10.04 on a HP Proliant DL180 G6, especially via the LO100 virtual KVM? I can boot almost any linux distro with it, but unfortunately whenever I boot the Ubuntu server cd the screen gets garbled. I did some searching on the net, and found some references to older versions of Ubuntu where one had to add vga=771 to the boot options, but this still doesn't work with 10.04. I tried several vga modes, all to no avail (with vga=normal the screen gets garbled, with anything else the screen just stays black). Anyone got any idea on how to fix this?

Ubuntu Servers :: Blank Screen - HP Proliant Microserver And 11.04

Aug 3, 2011

I've installed Ubuntu Server 11.04 64-bit on an HP Proliant Microserver. The install seems fine but I'm having a start-up problem. When I boot the server, I get a blank screen after the Grub Menu. If I press ALT-F2 I get the login prompt. I've tried editing the grub file (after having done some googling) and tried adding nomodeset to the following line in the grub file:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset acpi_osi=Linux"

I added nomodeset as well as acpi_osi=Linux to see if that would do somethng. After adding nomodeset, when I boot the server, I still get a blank screen after the Grub menu but this time a blinking cursor. Again, if I press ALT-F2 the login prompt shows up. So it boots (I'm able to putty/Webmin in even when the screen is blank) but don't know why I need to press ALT-F2 all the time to get the login prompt to appear. Plus I don't see the boot process right before the login as well.

HP Proliant has the following chipset and processor:
- AMD RS785E - north bridge, core logic controller
- AMD SB820M - south bridge
- AMD Athlon II NEO Processor 1.3 GHz Dual Core
I've also tried adding xforcevesa instead of nomodeset and that option too leaves me with a blank screen.

Ubuntu Servers :: 10.04 Server And Compaq Proliant ML330 G2 W/ATA RAID?

Jun 7, 2010

I'm having a great deal of time getting Lucid Server up and running on my Compaq Proliant ML330 G2. I've put a thread up in installing and upgrading, but people there don't seem to have any ideas about my problem. Since I figured there would be a higher concentration of server users here,

I've got a Proliant ML330 G2, 2 1.4 GHz PIV's
A dvd and CD drive on IDE1 (I'll explain why in a moment
A 65 gb hdd on IDE2
and four 40gb hdd's on hardware ide raid.

I've tried everything, but I can't get the sucker to boot. Installing to the raid array doesn't work. Some array setups won't partition, and others aren't even recognized as arrays. I've tried disabling the raid array and installing to the IDE hdd (my original intention) but I just get bad system disk errors. It would be exceptionally helpful if anyone has one of these boxes, or has worked on one, but I'm willing to take advice from any direction at this point.

Ubuntu Servers :: Compaq Proliant DL380 G2 Refusing To Install 10.10

Mar 29, 2011

I have a Compaq server, as per the title, and I wish to install Ubuntu Server onto it but ran aground when I found it got to trying to run the installer after the CD Boot menu, it just stopped there, waited 180 seconds (as per the error's details) and then locked up with the Caps Lock & Scroll Lock lights on the keyboard flashing.

Now I know it's not the server, as I have installed other OSes onto it in the past, including an older version of Ubuntu server (9.04), I did try and re-install the 9.04 version but the CD I had was too scratched up and got to a point in the installer (copying files) where it just failed cos it couldn't read the disc.

The specs of the thing are:

Dual PentiumIIIs 1.4GHz
512mb RAM (keep meaning to upgrade it)
3x 18.2GB 10k SCSI HDDs (Storage)

Not sure what else is in there, but the full specs are on the web...

Ubuntu Servers :: Installing HP Support Apps On Proliant ML370 G3?

Jun 1, 2011

I acquired an old ML370 Proliant server, and I'm attempting to find a way to control the fan speed, as all three noisy fans are running at full blast, and I had planned to keep this thing in the office, because it has no wireless capability or support.

I know the following:HP has a suite of programs that are variously called Insight Control Manager, Server Health driver, HP-health, hpasm, and a few more I can't remember. Obviously these are different iterations of the same program, but I have been unable to determine which one I need, and I've been completely unable to find a way to install any of them or find the repository that contains them.

The website: Download Drivers and SoftwareIt lists a lot of different Enterprise-class Server OSes, but nothing about Ubuntu or any home server OSes. I've only been at this for a week, so I don't know which of these would work with Ubuntu Server, or how to make them work if their aptitude file extension is not .deb. I'm currently running Server version 10.10, as 11.04 gave me monitor troubles.

I'm wondering if I could put my old DualCore PCIe Board into a Proliant 3000? Why not; I mean, the Array Controller should plug right into the PCI slot on the DualCore board. Of course, I'll have to shoehorn a second power supply into the case for the newer Board, but wouldn't it be a monster! Two 3GHZ Processors, with a 256 MB nVidia graphics card, 1.5 GB of RAM, and 8 Hard Drives! (7, actually, because one of them doesn't work). I'm up late, and I think I'll start working on it right now.

Software :: Is There Way To Control LCD's Fluorescent Light's Power?

Jan 15, 2010

To protect my eyes I always lower the monitor's brightness to its lowest. In some of the computers/displays I can get the desired low brightness in some others I cannot. For example in my WinXP ThinkPad R51 laptop I can make the brightness extremely low while in Ubuntu 9.04 ThinkPad R41 laptop and Apple Mac mini/23" Cinema Display I cannot get the desired lowness easily.

But in my Ubuntu 9.04 ThinkPad laptop, just as the energy saving routine has started to dim the brightness of LCD, an idea has come up. The energy saver routine was apparently lowering the fluorescent light's power, I'm sure of it. So I wonder now if there's a way to control and set that by myself? I'd like to set the fluorescent light's power to a much lower level.

Firefox extensions:

When asking for support, please describe your problem in detail and provide the output of the following commands and instructions. This will make sure I will have a good understanding of your Firefox and Flash installations, so I don't need to guess what might be happening to your system:

1 - Flash Version

Type about:config in Firefox address bar, then type plugin.expose_full_path in the filter, then double-click the same item in the results to make it true. Then type about:plugins in the address bar, find Shockwave Flash, copy the corresponding Path and Version and paste here. it should look lie the image below:

2 - Firefox version and architecture

To find Firefox version and architecture, click "Help >> About Mozilla Firefox" in the menu. The info will be located at the bottom of the info dialog:

3 - System Info

Execute the following commands then copy the generated file, named firefox-report.txt from your Desktop and upload it here or paste the contents.

To execute those commands, select the entire content below, then go to "Applications >> Accessories >> Terminal" and click the terminal with the middle-mouse button.

Ubuntu Servers :: Low Power Home Server

Mar 1, 2010

I've been running my Dell SC440 as a home server/workstation for about a year now and whilst it can cope with both roles, it is power hungry, loud and does get a little slow down sometimes. What I am looking to do is create a home server to take away the need of it to be on 24x7.My requirements in a home server would include:

- Media Server (using TwonkyMedia or uShare)
- NZB Downloader (hellaNZB or sabNZB)
- AFP + NFS file serving
- rsync/unison for Linux backups and N900 media sync and backup
- Email/Calendar/Contacts hosting and sync (zimbra or zarafa?)

I would like to achieve this with an Acer Revo and a couple of 1 or 1.5TB external hard disks, I'm unsure if the Atom processor would be strong enough for all of these services, although I could test it using my netbook, if that can cope, the Revo would be able to easily.

Ubuntu Servers :: 10.04 LTS - CPU (Power Saving) For Home NAS

May 18, 2011

I am planning to make a home made NAS running ubuntu server 10.04 LTS. Nothing fancy, simple samba with open access for all and openssh for admin access over the network. The NAS will not have heavy traffic, two home computers with occasional access, just to serve as central location. I am in doubt which CPU to use and I am after both budget and power saving solution.

1. I have an old Athlon Clawhammer I can use but the TDP of 90W is putting me off. I can also use existing 2x512MB DDR-400 memory with it. The board would be new.
2. I would rather invest in new mini-ITX board with built-in dual-core Atom D525 (TDP 13W), VGA and Gb ethernet. I would add 2GB DDR3-1333 memory.

Since I would need a new board for the Clawhammer too (current one doesn't have SATA), I am more attracted to option 2. Would the dual-core Atom be enough running this simple home NAS? I think it should but my experience with ubuntu server is limited.

Ubuntu Servers :: Power Went Out, Now System Is Read Only?

Jun 15, 2011

I've done a lot of search and already kind of fixed part of the problem, so this is where the fun comes in. I went away for the week, and not until the day I got back I lost power while out, and my computer rebooted after the power outage to Mac osx, which it's supposed to do as I'm using a Mac Pro and have a regular version of OSX 10.5 on there and my ubuntu server. I restart my computer and I get a few errors and my raid5(3 1tb drives) doesn't mount and says read only for everything else. I finally found a way to remount that raid which while in root I could create new folders and move folders, but only on that raid. I wasn't able to do anything with my boot drive. The weird part is, that now I can't ssh into the server and webmin won't even load. I'm still relatively new(little over a year, but honestly, not much has gone wrong to need to troubleshoot) to ubuntu server, so I'm not that best at troubleshooting it. I won't be home till later tonight, but any tips/tricks/ideas I can try when I get home would be great, or if you need any info, I can get it to you.

General :: Ubuntu Boot Optimization Strategy And Oddity

Jan 7, 2010

I want to get Ubuntu blazing fast and I started out by changing the swappiness to just 10 and got a huge performance spike. I was very happy with that. Then I used rcconf and GNOME's startup applications GUI and edited out quite a bit but still have a somewhat slow boot. Well, the next thing I thought I should do is edit the inittab and rid my self of some surely unneeded services. Well, according to this website, Ubuntu doesn't use this inittab, but etc/event.d doesn't exist either! Well I looked in /etc for something related to init, and I believe I have found where these services are called upon. /etc/init.d and /etc/init.

Now the files contain many scripts for different services so I was wondering how to edit these to turn them off to optimize my boot! Do I comment out the unneeded ones? My next question is what strategy should I use as I edit these? I think I can get rid of "ssh" and "cups" and "samba" since I don't use these. Can someone point me to a nice list of services and their functions? I just want to optimize Ubuntu as much as possible to not only have a fast computer for my self and family to use, but to impress Windows users with the speed that can be obtained from Linux!

Programming :: Memory Optimization For Child Processes?

Sep 6, 2010

I work on Linux for ARM processor for cable modem. There is a tool that I have written (as the job demands) that sends/storms customized UDP packets using raw sockets. I form the packet from scratch so that we have the flexibility to play with different options. This tool is mainly for stress testing routers.

The details are here.

I actually have multiple interfaces created. Each interface will obtain IP addresses using DHCP. This is done in order to make the modem behave as virtual customer premises equipment (vcpe).

When the system comes up, I start those processes that are asked to. Every process that I start will continuously send packets. So process 0 will send packets using interface 0 and so on. Each of these processes that send packets would allow configuration (change in UDP parameters and other options at run time). Thats the reason I decide to have separate processes.

I start these processes using fork and excec from the provisioning processes of the modem.

The problem now is that each process takes up a lot of memory. Starting just 3 such processes, causes the system to crash and reboot.

I have tried the following:- 1-I have always assumed that pushing more code to the Shared Libraries will help. So when I tried moving many functions into shared library and keeping minimum code in the processes, it made no difference to my surprise.

2-I also removed all arrays and made them use the heap. However it made no difference. This maybe because the processes runs continuously and it makes no difference if it is stack or heap?

3-I suspect the process from I where I call the fork is huge and that is the reason for the processes that I make result being huge. I am not sure how else I could go about. say process A is huge -> I start process B by forking and excec. B inherits A's memory area. So now I do this -> A starts C which inturn starts B will also not help as C still inherits A?. I used vfork as an alternative which did not help either. I do wonder why.

reduce the memory used by each independent child processes.
