Ubuntu :: Samba Mount At Boot Time Randomly Fail Since Upgrade To 9.10?

Jan 29, 2010

On my computer, I mount at boot time through the /etc/fstab some shares.I was working flawlessly on 9.04 and previous version.Since 9.10 version, it sometime fails to mount the share and I need to run PHP Code:sudo mount -a to get my mount shared mounted. (the command "mount -a" always work).

Debian Configuration :: CIFS Mount At Boot Time Fail?

Nov 20, 2010

Running Debian stable. I added the following command to rc.local and made it executable:mount -t cifs -o username=ted, password=computer, uid=mooreted, gid=users "//192.168.1.121/Storage Volume" /mnt/vortexAfter rebooting dmesg throws the following error:

[ 21.400697] CIFS VFS: Error connecting to IPv4 socket. Aborting operation
[ 21.400708] CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -101

However, if I run the command as root after the system boots it works fine.Been using this method on other distros for over a year. No idea what the problem is.

OpenSUSE Install :: Samba Shares Do Not Mount At Boot Time?

Mar 12, 2010

opesnSuse 11.1, linux 2.6.27.45-0.1-default x86_64 This host has two samba shares that are located on an OS/2 server. Neither mount at boot time but they do mount from the command line.

kernel: CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -6

There are 5 other client computers that mount the same shares at boot time using almost (different user/pass info) identical data. I do not see what is different about this host.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Win7 System - Epic 10.04 Upgrade Fail

Jun 2, 2010

I had a machine that dual-booted Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10. This past weekend I thought I'd upgrade to 10.04. I obviously selected the utterly wrong set of selections when prompted during installation to pick partitions for GRUB2 to manage. I am sorry I can't say what I picked, but I can tell you the results:

* Ubuntu 10.04 boots fine
* Windows 7 just blinks with a flashing cursor in the upper left
* I do have my Win 7 install disc and used the "repair" option and the command line commands, but the repair disc does NOT see any valid Windows partitions... no C:, nothing. I can't run the various repair options I've seen online because there's nothing to run it on.
* I can see the Windows partition when booted under Ubuntu... all the data is still apparently there.
* I've seen various threads about restarting with the LiveCD and re-running GRUB2 but am not sure I've seen a definitive page on how to re-run GRUB2 and what to select once I've done so.

I would be happy to get both Win 7 and Ubuntu bootable, but barring that, I would like to get Win 7 back with everything intact. If the easiest path forward is to reformat and reinstall Win 7, that's less fine but doable -- I've backed up what I can via Ubuntu to an external drive.

The board is an asus P5N-D. I press F1 to blow past the error and all is well until the next cold boot. Restarts are fine, no errors at all.

Ubuntu Networking :: Grub2 Is Unable To Deal With Mounting The Samba Shares On Lan At Boot Time

Oct 15, 2010

I've been having terrible trouble with my 64bit Desktop v10.04 ever since I upgraded it. Has been a long battle - but I think I have it down to just one remaining issue which I suspect is more related to the network than to the upgrade. So I'll ask here also... The old system always used grub as the bootloader, and has always worked just fine. I have now had to do a complete fresh install, which incorporated a change to grub2 (first time I have used it).

It would seem now, that grub2 is unable to deal with mounting the samba shares on my lan at boot time. The boot always fails, dumping the user to the cli rather than the gui desktop. The error given indicates that the network is unreachable. Most users of the system have given up on Ubuntu altogether because of this, and fallen back into the clutches of the evil empire (the machine dual boots XP). If I log in, and manually startx to open the desktop, the network is there, and the shares are mounted just fine. Everything seems to be working ok - but for crashing out of the boot process with network errors. The fstab file follows, in case there is some cause there I'm not seeing (I have edited names and passwords prior to posting)...

Fedora Installation :: 13 Boot Up Fail Error 17 "cannot Mount Selected Partition"?

May 28, 2010

When upgrading F12 to F13 I had a fatal error when I selected to update grub so I opted to do a fresh install of grub and the upgrade proceeded without any further problems. When I went to boot the system (dual-boot with Win 7) grub gave me error 17 "cannot mount selected partition". So I booted into rescue from the install disk thinking that maybe reinstalling grub might help, but when I ran "grub-install /dev/sda" I got the message that "/dev/sda does not have any corresponding BIOS drive" (I have Windows on SATA 1 sda and Fedora on SATA 2 sdb). I exited rescue mode rebooted entered BIOS and swapped the drive order and restarted. Success!... Well almost. The progress bar goes all the way across the screen to the point the login screen should come up then it hangs...

Debian Configuration :: Mount Smbshare At Boot Time?

Oct 13, 2010

A windows server named SRV is sharing folders for each users in /share/From a Debian computer on network logged with the user session "foo" I can mount the remote directory /share/foo with:smbmount //SRV/share/$LOGNAME /remote_directorythen the prompt ask me for password and when I have gave it the remote directory is mounted correctly. Now I would like to make this at boot time.If I put the same command in the .bashrc, when I boot, the remote directory is not mounted when the session is opened but then if I open a console, it ask me for password and the directory is mounted. This way is not convenient and it would be better if the directory is mounted when the user open his session and using the same password. The point is that every user should have a his own remote directory mounted when the session is opened.

Ubuntu :: Automatically Mount The Disk And Enter The Password Each Time Boot Up

i'm trying to get everything working ok. i have installed ubuntu using wubi and i've found that i can access my files on my windows partition from ubuntu. to do this i have to mount the disk and enter the password each time i boot up, and i would like this to be done automatically. i was wondering if this was possible? i put in a link directly to the music folder on windows into my 'places' but it only appears once i have put the password in. its not a huge thing, but its one of those things which would make starting up my ubuntu a lot more conveniant.

Ubuntu Servers :: Samba Not Starting At Boot After 9.10 Upgrade?

Mar 14, 2010

I have a file server running samba 3.4.0. I just upgraded ubuntu to 9.10. The upgrade was unfortunately stopped in the middle, but I think I managed to complete it.The problem is that now samba will not work after a reboot. The daemons are running, but any attempt to connect from a windows machine fails (Windows 7: the network path was not found). Manually restarting the service fixes the problem, but I need a more stable solution!Interestingly, I can ssh to the machine, or rdp to a virtual machine running on it.The logs don't seem to report any error:

Code:

OpenSUSE Install :: Upgrade Fails Because /boot Won't Mount?

Jul 21, 2010

I was running openSUSE 11.2 on a Dell Studio with a mirrored disk. The upgrade to 11.3 went well it seemed until it got to the point of installing the new bootloader. Then it couldn't mount /boot. Otherwise it seemed to go OK though. It completed and rebooted. I see a very brief flash of the word GRUB on the reboot, but then the screen blanks and I get the BIOS messages again. How can I now install GRUB so that I can boot. I had a similar issue with 11.2 in the past, and was able to repair GRUB using 11.2's DVD's "Repair Installation" which had tools to reinstall GRUB.11.3's DVD is missing this option.I'd prefer not to do a fresh install as then I will have a lot of OS setup to repeat (Samba, Apache, Trac, etc.....)

Ubuntu Networking :: Windows Browsing To Samba 3.4 Shares Freezes Randomly

Oct 8, 2010

I have an Ubuntu Server 9.10 box running Samba 3.4.0. It has 4 shares, one of which is a CIFS connection to an XP machine, another of which is a password protected share. All the shares work fine and well. However, lately the client has called to say that "everything's hanging and freezing" when they browse the shares via Windows Explorer (approximately 30+ PCs on network, variety of XP, Vista and 7 OSes).

Not all users always experience the problem, and I remote in to test when I hear this via an XP machine, and today for the fist time I also experienced this problem - browsing literally sticks and hangs. No entries in PC's eventviewer. They are running on Netgear switches, all the same age, a couple of months old. A simple reboot and and everything's fine again for an indeterminable time, then I get another phonecall and an unhappy client on the end!

Ubuntu :: Fail To Mount Filesystem?

Jan 8, 2010

Something very strange happened. Firefox was acting a little strange, so I decided to restart my system. When ubuntu started to boot it showed an error that said filesystem failed to mount. It gave me an "emergency" command line and told me ctrl-D would retry the mount. Why would this happen? I haven't modified any system files for a very long time. It told me to run fsck (I think thats what it was) and that seemed to fix the problem. Just curious as to what could have happened. Anyone else have this problem? Anything I should try to fix so this won't happen in the future?

General :: Keyboard Activating SHIFT Randomly For A Short Time

Feb 14, 2010

I think this might be related to the changes to using udev or DeviceKit. It started when I was running the beta versions of F12. Then it crept into Debian Sid. And my Arch Testing and Gentoo also suffer from the same.

What happens is that I'll be working along. Then when I press any key it is as if the SHIFT key is pressed. When I press CAPSLOCK, some of the keys react as they would normally. This never lasts for more than 5 minutes. And seems to happen infrequently. I say seems because there are the times I am at work and it could be that the same thing is happening only there is no one on the keyboard.

The reason I pick out udev/DeviceKit is that when it used to happen to F12 beta, the other distros had not yet made the move. So back then it was only a F12 issue. Now it is happening across the board. And only started recently.

Ubuntu :: Randomly: No Audio - Can't Mount USB Flash/DVDs - Can't Shutdown

May 10, 2010

I have just installed Lucid i386 on an intel Core2Duo. Everything seems to be OK but about a third of the times I boot the system the following happen:

1) aplay -l reports no soundcards found and therefore I have no sound whatsoever

2) I cannot mount any USB Flash drives or DVD discs and I keep getting "Not authorized" error messages plugging them in.

3) The system won't reboot/shutdown by the gnome applet. Instead, it will drop back to the login screen asking my login. Furthermore, it won't even shutdown from there! Only a poweroff or reboot from command line can work.

4) The gnome applet "Indicator applet session" only shows "Log out, Restart, Shutdown". Suspend and Hibernate options are missing.

Furthermore, it seems that I am the only one who has these issues. My sound card is an onboard HDA Intel although this seems to be that something else dies taking some major subsystems down with it. Any ideas?

/proc/asound/cards shows:

but: aplay -l
