Ubuntu Servers :: Samba Doesn't Show Printer At Boot
Jun 6, 2010
Each time I boot I have to restart samba to see the shared printer on other windows machine. I tought it was the cups problem listed on the forum, but I'm not sure anymore if it's related!Could it be related to the service sequence? I don't know how to look at the service load sequence in ubuntu?

I have taken a break from using Fedora, but since getting my netbook Ive decided to dual boot with Windows 7 Started (warranty purposes) and Fedora 14 with Fedora as the default boot OS. Now Ive got my home network setup as follows:
Gaming laptop, Windows 7 Pro x64, external powered USB hub with 1.5TB HD with shared folders through windows share permissions and the HP Deskjet F2430 printer
Netbook 1, my wifes netbook, Windows 7 Starter, has 100% access to the windows shares and the printer.
Netbook 2, my netbook, Fedora 14 has windows shared folder access but no printer access. In Windows 7 Starter has access to windows shared folders and printer access.
All of them are wirelessly networked through my Linksys WRTG54GS thats flashed with DD-WRT Mega firmware. The only laptop that has a hardwired connection to the printer and HD is my gaming laptop. how to go about allowing this? My printer doesnt show up in the CUPS wizard.

I've bought a HP Photosmart printer, HP Photosmart wireless e-All-in-One printer - B110a and i've got a problem installing it properly. I'm using Debian 6.0 Squeeze. When i connect the printer, Debian doesn't recognize my printer as the Photosmart B109 printer for unknown reason. When i go to the site of HP and search for a driver, it directs me to this site:I've downloaded that latest hplip file as a .run file and installed it. My printer is recognized proparly, but when i try to print a colored image, it comes out black/white. Something is not crrect. Does anyone recognize this problem with this type HP printer?

I'm fairly new to Ubuntu and I like it a lot. However, there's a graphical error which started to happen after the very first bootup. The startup screen (the purple one with the 5 dots that appear) isn't showing anymore. It is replaced by some console technical guff scrolling down my screen (which isn't a problem, because Ubuntu itself works fine, but it just looks a bit rough). Again, on shutdown, it displays some amalgamated mix of more technical jargon, and a terribly lo-res version of the shutdown screen.
Is there any way I can fix this?

I got ubuntu samba server on server 10.04 username:user1 , Home folder: /home/user1 This user connects from a macbook pro no problem. I followed the same steps to set up user2 username:user2 , Home folder: /home/user2 This user does not connect from windows vista. I have the correct ports open, 137-139 & 445, and can connect from the macintosh, but not vista. The error says that the username or password is in correct. If you need some log files or config files, just let me know where to go and they're all yours!

In my ongoing hunt for a Samba GUI that is feature packed, well supported, easy to use, yet doesn't suck, I found myself tinkering with eBox. I have it installed and fired up but I'm a little confused. I can add a Samba share - okay great. But I sorta need to add users. Where on earth can I add users? The users and group section of eBox doesn't appear to be related to what I need, and I also cannot get into the access control section of the very share I just created.

I created a Fedora 13 x86 live image on USB using [URL] I've set it to boot using the USB and when it does I see the 10 sec countdown (or the options if I press a key), I tried all the options to boot the image but the screen just turns black for a few seconds and then the the monitor goes into "power saving mode" and nothing happens (I waited like 10 minutes). What's going on? I am trying to install fedora into an empty (secondary) HD, in the main HD I only have a win XP, and I don't want to burn a cd/dvd that's why I am trying to boot the USB.

I have a Centos 5.3 server with Samba file shares and a shared Samba printer. I am not running a domain.
I recently changed my windows desktop pc from an XP machine to a vista 64 machine... It has a different user name. Everything went pretty smoothly - and the and the vista machine found the smba printer - and even downloaded the driver from the samba server. he printer works OK - and the file shares are fine.
The only thing which is quite odd - is that the Printer Properties dialogue takes more than 30 seconds to come up - and every action you attempt with the dialogue takes a similar amount of time.
I will include below the essence of my smb.conf:

I've got a dual-booting system with Windows 7 and Opensuse 11.2. I had a few other random kernels so I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst to remove them. This was fine after a reboot, then I went to YaST and changed the default boot partition to Windows, because I had edited the MBR and put Windows above the other boot partitions, YaST changed "default" to 0.
Now after a restart the Boot Loader doesn't appear, I just have a flashing cursor. When I try to boot from an OpenSuse installation disc and try repair the Repair Kernel loads but freezes on the OpenSuse splash screen. I've heard this is due to the fact I have an ATI Radeon card, if I hold shift during the CD load to prevent the graphical interface of the CD loading. I can type to boot "rescue" but it freezes on "starting udev...". Essentially I just need to be able to edit menu.lst back to the backup I made or change the "default" value back to 1.

I have a file server running samba 3.4.0. I just upgraded ubuntu to 9.10. The upgrade was unfortunately stopped in the middle, but I think I managed to complete it.The problem is that now samba will not work after a reboot. The daemons are running, but any attempt to connect from a windows machine fails (Windows 7: the network path was not found). Manually restarting the service fixes the problem, but I need a more stable solution!Interestingly, I can ssh to the machine, or rdp to a virtual machine running on it.The logs don't seem to report any error:
Code:
stefano@SERVER02:/var/log/samba$ tail log.smbd

I have a parallel port printer connected using usb->parallel adapter. Sometimes the printer prints sometimes it doesn't.
A job will go the print queue and then sit there for ages. Sometimes if I unplug and then replug the usb->parallel cable the printer will print other times it will print half the document then freeze until the cable was unplugged and replugged again.
The printer never shows up in the list using lsusb (only my usb mouse and scanner do).
The printer is an hp deskjet 690c and worked fine under WinXP through a normal parallel cable. The one thing I haven't tested (but will test tomorrow) is the usb->parallel cable in XP.

I'm trying to make some pages. For this I try to host them locally. However, when I have an error in my PHP code, the server shows an internal error 500 page and doesn't show on what line and what compile error it encountered. There is no such information in the error log either. What should I do about it, it's not really nice to comment all the lines and then try to uncomment them one by one. I've been googling for a while, but didn't find anything.. I forgot to mention, I;m using Fedora :P, the apache that came with it and mysql and php from the repository...

I wrote a little script that will automatically mount two Samba shares to my home directory and I was wondering if a) You guys/gals had any input as to how I could improve on this script and b) Tell me how I would go about having this script automatically execute when I log on via SSH.
Code:
#!/bin/sh
mount -t smbfs -o username=Myuser,password=Thepassword //192.168.1.102/Data1 /home/user/Data1
mount -t smbfs -o username=Myuser,password=Thepassword //192.168.1.102/Data2 /home/user/Data2

I'm using an up-to-date installation of Squeeze with the default Gnome desktop and am trying to print. My knowledge of configuring printers is very limited if it even exists. Since a friend of mine is able to print from her Ubuntu computer, my plan is to copy her. Here's how she does it. She goes under System->Administration->Printing on the desktop. Then a window pops up titled "Printing" that lists various printers that are supposed to exist. It's possible to add one by selecting Add->Printer. It asks for the root password and then a new window pops up titled "New Printer" which has a subwindow called "Select Device" In my case, the "Select Device" window has the following options to choose from:
- AppSocket/HP JetDirect
- Internet Printing Protocol (ipp)
- LPD/LPR Host or Printer
In her case, she has an extra option called "Windows Printer via Samba". This is the option that she uses. The other options don't seem to work for her. I'm assuming that I just need to install some package in order to make this option magically pop up for me. Does anyone know what package this may be? I currently have the packages smbclient, samba-common and samba-common-bin installed..........

I've been running 10.04 server for 3 months from a fresh install. I have been installing updates while Bind9, Apache2 and Samba worked just fine. The last time I installed updates was 3 weeks ago and it worked just fine.
Today I ran into problems where the system stopped doing its DNS stuff and wouldn't respond to pings over the network. Since I couldn't get it to respond with a keyboard and monitor attached to it I shut it down through the power switch. I then tried to restart the machine and all it would do was go through the bios and show a cursor flashing in the upper left or this odd color pattern on the screen and then reboot
I have tried pulling the HD and loaded it into my Ubuntu desktop and loaded the file system just fine. I then tried using the "rescue a broken system" option Ubuntu 10.04 32bit install disk and it seems to just sit at a flashing cursor.
I've seen some odd things pop up on the screen at times but mainly would be a flashing cursor in the upper left part of the screen.

I wish to prevent the samba messages (mainly nmbd and winbindd) from appearing in the system log (/var/log/messages). I want to allow samba logging to the standard samba logfiles, but prevent the syslog getting clogged up by samba. I added syslog = 0 to smb.conf and reloaded the config but the messages were still appearing. I also tried the following (and restarted the syslog via /sbin/service syslog restart) # Suppress messages from samba.
nmbd.* /dev/null
smbd.* /dev/null
winbindd.* /dev/null
For interests sake the messages I'm getting are below (I'm not concerned about the messages themselves, I can chase them up at my leisure via the samba logs) Mar 18 09:58:29 SERVER nmbd[3808]: query_name_response: Multiple (2) responses received for a query on subnet xx.yy.z.zz for name DOMAIN<1d>. Mar 18 09:58:29 SERVER nmbd[3808]: This response was from IP xx.yy.z.zz, reporting an IP address of xx.yy.z.zz.

Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't boot at all. The liveCD only boots once every like 30 attempts, installing from liveCD froze, but the Alternate CD worked and installed ubuntu. Now when I try to boot into it using GRUB, it freezes at the beginning of the boot process. With normal boot it freezes at line: Starting AppArmor profiles Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox.With recovery mode it freezes even before showing me anything
A little kinda like the liveCD, if I try like 30 times, it might manage to boot once in normal mode. That line keeps on repeating, the the xxx.xxx integer changes each time, and this goes on forever.I tried removing my floppy drive, but it didn't help.I tried to boot with fd0=noprobeThe one time it booted, when I restarted, it froze while trying to restart.

My desktop is now dual boot, Xubuntu 10.10 has been added to WinXP. The attached parallel printer works fine with either OS. When running XP I can share the printer with my two XP laptops without problem. I cannot share it when the desktop is running Xubuntu. Neither laptop can see the printer. However, if I open the desktop Samba config application, change any parameter, retype in the original parameter, both laptops can see and connect to the shared printer - until I reboot the desktop

I have have recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop pc and set-up a shared folder and a shared printer from the Ubuntu desktop. My shared folder works completely fine and is easily accessible by my windows xp laptop. My printer sharing initially worked fine and I was able to connect and print from the windows xp laptop. Unfortunately, after a reboot of the ubuntu computer the printer is no longer found by the laptop (the shared folder, however, still works fine).
I can get the shared printer working again by using the following command to restart Samba: -
sudo service smbd restart
After restarting Samba, suddenly my laptop can see the printer again. I don't particularly want to have to restart Samba every time I boot up my computer. I understand I could probably make a script that would restart Samba automatically after booting or logging in, but I would rather fix the actual problem than use a workaround like that.
