Ubuntu Servers :: Error Message When Starting Samba Server?
Nov 22, 2010
I am trying to share files between Windows XP machine, ubuntu server, debian server and ubuntu desktop. But mainly between ubuntu server and Windows XP computer.I also like to learn samba, because probably I could do all this with ftp server as well.I set up and configured samba following the instruction on Online Ubuntu Server Guide. But when I run the command:sudo /etc/init.d/samba restartI get:bash: /etc/init.d/samba: No such a file or directory I don't know what is wrong?
I have a Samba server conecting to a windows XP machine that is in workgroup named CLOUDLESS. I have a share folder that resides in the server that can be accessed no problem by the XP client, but I got the following error message from the syslog:
Code: Apr 5 18:15:44 firefly nmbd[5656]: find_domain_master_name_query_fail: Apr 5 18:15:44 firefly nmbd[5656]: Unable to find the Domain Master Browser name CLOUDLESS<1b> for the workgroup CLOUDLESS. Apr 5 18:15:44 firefly nmbd[5656]: Unable to sync browse lists in this workgroup.
When I start the vncserver process, I get a message saying "Starting VNC server: no displays configured." I edited the /root/.vnc/xstartup file and changed twm & to say "gnome-session &" (Without quotes). Not sure why I am still seeing this error. It's CentOS 5.4.
It's been awhile since I posted anything which is a good sign my install has been working well and I have been able to handle most everything. However, I'm not able to handle this issue. I recently installed F11 and everything went well. But, when trying to see my other computers on the local network, I cannot. I receive this error message: Unable to mount location Failed to receive shared list from server. I understand the message as it is obvious, but do not know how to fix it.
I have installed vnc-server on my CentOS 5.6 virtual machine. I can connect to it with a java web browser so it seems to be working. However, I get the following error message when I start, stop or restart the vnc-server process. Quote: Starting VNC server: 1:ken xauth: timeout in locking authority file /root/.xauthkk661q
I have a file server running samba 3.4.0. I just upgraded ubuntu to 9.10. The upgrade was unfortunately stopped in the middle, but I think I managed to complete it.The problem is that now samba will not work after a reboot. The daemons are running, but any attempt to connect from a windows machine fails (Windows 7: the network path was not found). Manually restarting the service fixes the problem, but I need a more stable solution!Interestingly, I can ssh to the machine, or rdp to a virtual machine running on it.The logs don't seem to report any error:
i'm not the most knowlegable person but i have successfully installed mysql in the past. but now that i am attempting to install it again i'm getting this error during installation. has anyone seen this before?
mysql error: *Starting MySQL database server mysqld [fail] invoke-rc.d: initscript mysql, action "start" failed. dpkg: error processing mysql-server-5.0 (--configure): subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
I'm trying to install postgresql 8.3 on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS server and I'm running into problems starting it. Commands I've done # apt-get install postgresql postgresql-common Things I've tried Starting it manually
# /etc/init.d/postgrsql-8.3 start
Nothing appears in my /var/run/postgresql When I try and start psql as the postgres user I get the following error psql: could not connect to server: No such file or directory Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432"? I've been following the docs at: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PostgreSQL
I usually run my updates every Friday, my last good update was 4-Mar-2011. I could not update this week and got an error -"PackageKit Error repo-not-available: File '/repodata/repomd.xml' not found on medium http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/Tumbleweed:/Raw/openSUSE_Tumbleweed_standard/'"I get a similar error message when starting Yast Software Management. Is this related to the 11.4 release? I'm waiting for fewer bugs before I upgrade to 11.4, so I'd like to be able to keep current with 11.3.
I was about to do upgrade from 11.3 to 11.4.I was following the guide I found in opensuse's website. I was to the point where I had to disable all 11.3 repositories and add the 11.4 at that point I forgot to change my nvidia repository ( I have a g210m graphic card).
thus after the upgrade the X could not start at all. I think this was because Yast could not find the nvidia driver.
Using text mode YaSt2 I added the nvidia driver but after restart I can not see and X running. I receive an error message that the current kernel can not be loaded!!!
I also checked in command line if there is something like Sax2.. but I couldnot find anything.
I have Samba 3.5.3-61 running on a Fedora Core 13 system. I created a share that is browseable to all systems, and I made sure to create a user account via the smbpasswd utility. When I try to connect to the server from a Windows XP system, I am able to enter the appropriate sharename as well as the username and password.
I have installed fedora 13 in my system. httpd server is also installed. when I tried to start the service of httpd, following error message displayed: Starting httpd: (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80
I am trying to install Zend Server, and that went well. Apache and all the other items were installed.
But when I go to start Apache, I get this error:
Quote:

I installed OS11.4 on my old laptop, Compaq Armada E500., 512MB RAM, ATI Rage Mobility. During installation I chose "minimal server" and added some development packages, lxde and a little more. I chose to start in runlevel 3 which is full networking without X. Still, when computer is booted it tries to start Xorg which doesn't work because of some problem w driver. The start-up seems to stop there, it never loads completely - seems most things in runlevel 3 are not started (see below) I can manually login on laptop and fix it - but never permanently, same thing again after reboot.
I have checked /etc/inittab & yast - both states default runlevel is 3. I have checked services to be started both directly, browsing directory /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/, and with YaST, it is very clear X should not load during boot. But, as said, it does.. I don't really care about the driver problem right now, I can fix that later when I have more time. So how do I stop X from getting started automatically?
More info, if needed: The installation also stopped with message on tty1 "Starting YaST2" and tty8 showing errors with graphics driver (mach64). The system seemed to be installed though, so I simply rebooted (issuing "reboot" from tty2).
[Code]....
I'm not completely sure where it stops, network is configured but keyboard is wrong and mysql & everything after is not started, so somewhere between S02network and S06kbd. I'm going to use it as a server for testing purposes so no X is actually needed - however I do want to have X & lxde installed just in case, my Internet connection at home is terribly slow so I need most things I might need in the future installed today.
I installed lighttpd to be able to view cgi files that display the status of my UPS. For the most part is has worked w/o incident i.e. until recently when the UPS battery failed on my APC backups xs 1500 lcd. I could not view the multimon.cgi file via the localhost or 127.0.0.1 url e.g.: [URL]... I'd get 404 page not found message. After checking links here and on the web, I tried: [URL]... The page is displayed. From this discovery, I'm not sure that this is a web server configuration or a network host configuration issue or what. I'm running Lucid with all updates, no mods to lighttpd except I added the mod_fastcgi line to the lighttpd.conf file
So recently my MySQL server doesn't startup when Ubuntu boots (it used to) and therefore causes database errors with my Web applications. How do I add MySQL to the run at startup list?
I'm trying to run BoxBackup to sync a couple active servers to a data server. I installed the server and client, making sure to follow the instructions closely with all the certificates. The problem is the service daemon on the service won't even start. The service manage reports: "bbstored dead but pid file exists" (basically, tried to instantiate the process, but it died due to faults).
Here's the log of the daemon in /var/log/box
Code: Jul 27 13:05:10 frogbert bbstored[13429]: NOTICE: Box Backup Store Server v0.11rc8, (c) Ben Summers and contributors 2003-2010 Jul 27 13:05:10 frogbert bbstored[13433]: NOTICE: Starting daemon, version: 0.11rc8 Jul 27 13:05:10 frogbert bbstored[13433]: NOTICE: Using configuration file: /etc/boxbackup/bbstored.conf Jul 27 13:05:10 frogbert bbstored[13433]: WARNING: Exception thrown: ServerException(SocketBindError) at ../../lib/server/SocketListen.h(232)
I am trying to get vsftpd started on my server. I followed the steps outlined here: [url] but for some reason, the daemon is not starting or throwing an error message.
After making all of the changes to vsftpd.conf, if I execute the following commands, here is the result:
Running Ubuntu Server 9.10.I have a couple of programs that I would like to start at boot, they will both run forever. I have created a cron job with @reboot and that will start a program, but if I have multiple programs in there it waits for the first to finish before starting the next.
I recently installed an Ubuntu 10.04LTS server. I have zabbix-server on that machine, and I noticed that after reboot it won't start. Probabily, the mix of upstart and old init.d scripts result in zabbix starting when mysql is not active yet, in fact in zabbix-server.log I see it cannot reach db. How can I make sure zabbix-server waits for mysql?
I am trying to install SAP Gui for linux 710r9 on fedora 10. After installing and configuring the client correctly I was able to LOGIN in to my SAP and use it properly, but when I select connect it gives me error box saying "Error when starting "gmux sever"." how to remove this error.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 Server running on an old pc in my basement. I installed samba and samba4 on it. I added users, etc. However, i cannot find it in my network locations on my Ubuntu 10.10 laptop
I'm trying to set up the server to at least ask for a password. I can connect to it without any trouble, but so can everyone else. How can I make samba ask for a password?
