Ubuntu :: Printing Margins - Restart Service Or Something After Changing Ppd?

Aug 10, 2010

I have an HP Deskjet D1460. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and HPLIP 3.10.2 that came with the distro. I am in a plan of moving my windows PC to ubuntu in my bussiness, and this is the first of them. Trying to solve all the problems before converting a second one. All seems to work quite well and almost out of the box... and that is a huge step from the last distro i tryied 2 years ago. So, my difficulty now resides on the printing. I am using a small VFox program that manage some of the aspects of the bussiness, in wine. It works without problems, but... when I print, all the pages get printed like 1cm below than when it was printed under windows. The problem is, that I use the printer to fill some forms that came pre-printed, and now, I am printing over the other text instead of the white spaces. I read a little, and try to adjust the HWMargins and the ImageableArea in the ppd of /etc/cups/ppd/ but it was like if I was doing nothing. Do I miss a step? Do I need to restart a service or something after changing the ppd? The margings when using the printer gui from Ubuntu are all in 0, and for that i need like a minus something.

Ubuntu :: Sun Java Printing Defaults - Cannot Change The Margins

May 21, 2010

I have set up an HP 5M networked printer. The test page works fine, and the defaults are all set correctly. But when I try to print from my own java programs, the paper size is set to letter, and the margins are all set to 2.54 mm. I can change the paper size to A4 (but I have to do it EVERY time). And the margins won't even let me change them. I type in 0, click in the next field, and the value changes straight back to 2.54. It has been this way for at least the last two releases of Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Printing Grayscale - Margins And Page Shrink Doesn't Work

Jul 13, 2010

I'm trying to print a PDF from Evince it don't work at all...

When I try to print in grayscale it send a blank paper to the printer...When I try to print anything in color I can't change the margin of the paper, it always put like ZERO margin and the text go throw the end of the paper.

The paper size is A5 (Half A4) and the printer is in LAN in a Windows computer.

It's me or when I print in grayscale it print faster? So, it's an update or something? Because last time I printed from Ubuntu (like a month ago) it printed perfectly OK in grayscale (I don't know about the margin).

Ubuntu :: How To Restart Network Adapter (not Service) Without Restart?

Mar 13, 2010

I have a suspend problem in my laptop. Sometimes, when resuming from suspend, the network adapter is down (that is, the network does not work and the light of the network adapter is off). Restarting the network service doesn't work, because I think that the system forgot about the hardware, and probably the driver should be reloaded.Does anyone knows how to do that?(ps. /etc/init.d/networking restart does not work, because the hardware driver is not being recognized anymore).

Ubuntu :: Printing Service Not Available After Upgrade?

Jun 9, 2011

I have Ubuntu 11.04 64 bit installed on a Dell Laptop, and my printer, a Samsung Laser ML - 1740 was working fine until yesterday when an upgrade for CUPS appeared in the Update Manager and I installed it. Now when I try to print, the printer is not listed and when I open up "Printing" a message appears stating "Printing service is not available. Start the service on this computer or connect to another server." The 'Start Service' option is grayed out and when I try 'Connect' another box appears "Connect to CUPS server - CUPS server: localhost" is the only option available. I try Connect but an error message appears stating "CUPS server error There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'failed to connect to server' " . I also installed VirtualBox yesterday but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with itForgot to add that the printer is connected directly to the laptop.

Ubuntu :: Changing The Bluetooth Service Name?

Oct 4, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS installed on a Dell Desktop with a USB Bluetooth dongle.

I have a bluetooth device, whose security is based upon searching not for the bluetooth service name but a renamed bluetooth service. The device comes with instructions on how to do it with a small subset of Windows XP machines but I feel like this should be a simple thing to do here.

Is there a simple way to either add an extra bluetooth service on a different name? Change the current bluetooth name? Ubuntu has a wiki that led me to the bluetooth preferences window and a services tab but that doesn't seem to exist in 10.04.

where to go in GUI or command line tools that will help with this?

General :: Changing Non-printing Keys In Keyboard Layout

May 9, 2011

I'm trying to write a new keyboard layout. I'm testing using Debian Squeeze and Kubuntu 11.04, both with KDE. It is important to solve this issue with a keyboard layout as opposed to playing with xmodmap or scancodes and keycodes because I need to leave other keyboard layouts intact and usable. For the time being the new layout is called Noah, implemented as a variant of US English. If this is done more easily by making whole new layout that is not a variant of another then I am willing to go that route.

First off, I am trying to move the Caps Lock key to the current location of the "B" Key. This is my code (the unshown parts of the files have not been touched):

Code:

The problem is that this configuration is also affecting the US English layout. When I press "B" the keyboard gives a B _and_ a Caps Lock! So typing I get output like this: "keybOARD". How do I restrict the B key to being Caps Lock only in the Noah layout?

Here is the homepage of the Noah layout: [url]

Ubuntu Servers :: Samba Shares Folders But Not Printers Until Restart The Smbd Service?

Jul 18, 2010

Just like the title states, as soon as my server comes up, I see the samba share that I made and can browse it just fine.

I don't see the printer share nor can I print to the shared printer until I execute service smbd restart from an ssh login. Then I see the printer and then I can network print.

Before restarting smbd, I do check to see if it's already running and it is (two instances are running in fact). When I restart smbd, there are still two smbd services running but they have higher PID numbers (and I can then print).

I'm running 10.04. how to make it all start up happily the first time without any intervention from me?

Ubuntu Networking :: Eth0 Unstable - Iptables Empty - Cant Service Iptable Restart

May 13, 2011

This is my first use of Ubuntu, but I have previous decent experience on Centos & Mandriva. I've just installed Natty 11.04 on a box that was running a mandriva 2010 - and the network is acting quite strange. When I define a static IP for eth0 through the gui, along with route & dns, it sort of works: ssh is fine, vnc too. However, I have an asterisk running on the box, and it is wild: some packets get lost in the box.

An ngrep shows the packets reaching the interface, but they dont show in asterisk !!! I've done a ufw disable, iptables is empty (why cant I service iptable restart btw ?). ip route list show decent routes (eth0 default); When I switch to DHCP, it is better, but unstable... If i plug a wifi usb stick, it seems to be better... Is there some known issues that could explain this behaviour ? Fedora Servers :: Upgrade From 10 To 11 Breaks Service Httpd Restart?

Mar 22, 2010

Alright, so I upgraded my old fedora 10 server to Fedora 11 with a netinstall CD, but now service httpd restart is broken. I already had to delete the old config file and reinstall apache, but now I can't restart it. I can kill it and then start it manually, but it never stops the running instance and fails to bind the port. I know it's because /var/run/httpd/htpd.pid is in the wrong place, which would be /var/run/httpd.pid, but do I have to make a symlink every time I want to restart it? I edited all the config files to point to the right place, but the system does not honor them. What do I do?

General :: Cron And Oracle Service Stopped Unexpectedly - Cannot Restart

May 5, 2010

I am running Fedora 11 with an Oracle 11g database installed. I came to check on it and found out that the oracle service had stopped. I also have a script that gets run by cron every minute. I noticed that the last entry in the log /var/log/cron was March 24 at 4:26. Which was really close (not exactly to the second but within a few minutes) of the last log entry in the database translator logs (the database was processing data and it outputs a log).

I rebooted the machine and cron started running again, but I can't get the oracle service to start again. Normally it runs at startup, but if I need to run it or check it, I use:
Code: /sbin/service oracle restart
Is there another log that I could look at to see what would be the cause of the stoppage? How to get the oracle service started again?

Server :: Service Postfix Restart Fail / Domain Name Config

Mar 4, 2010

I am new to Linux and I am trying to set up a mail server using postfix. I have done all the configurations(hopefully correct) and all the test seems to work except 2 things.

1) Postfix is running but when I try to restart the service it always fails. I checked the /var/log folder and there are no error messages.
2) When I try sending e-mails using outlook, outlook fails to connect to my server.

I am wondering if I have done the configurations properly. I am a little confused in regards to hostname and domain name. When I do a hostname on the terminal I see the hostname that I gave my server. When I do the domainname command however, domain is none. Is it necessary to have a domain to configure postfix? I have myhostname = my.hostname.com what should my domainname = to if there is none. If I do require a domain name how to I create one? I need to be able to access e-mail from external clients.
