Jul 11, 2011I want to make sure sshd service will start after a server reboot. On redhat or centOS I can do "chkconfig sshd on". What's the equivalent command for ubuntu?

Is there a log file so that I can see what was the problem? If I want to use ssh I have to start it from yast every time the computer restarts.

Aug 20, 2011hi, first i'd like to say that i'm totally new to linux, i was allways using windows.
as i was allways unable to install a good and stable ssh-server on windows, i thought it is time to change to linux. i was able to set up and configure a ssh-server on debian but found out, that fedora 15 looks more userfriendly in first place for me. but now i unfortunately experience problems..
the ssh server was already installed, i changed the service setting to that it starts automatically but after i succesfully connected to the LAN, i cannot access the shh via putty for instance. when i type "service sshd status" it says beside other things: active (running). but when i look at the /var/log/messages, it says those two lines:
sshd.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=255
Unit sshd.service entered failed state.
i searched on google without success, the only thing i found was that someone had the same problem with a bad sshd_config file, but i'm pretty sure that everything is alright with my config-file (i checked it several times).
beside this i cant login on the gui, after the firefox update (??) it always says: a problem has occured and the system can't recover bla bla... so i can only use fedora right now commandline-based.. but with this problem i will deal later on...
Ubuntu Security :: SSHD Stopped Working After Reboot
Jun 11, 2011I've been using ssh for a LONG time to connect my laptop to my desktop with no problems. I use a non-standard port (nnnnn) and keys. After a power outage that caused a shutdown and reboot, I can no longer ssh into the desktop. The only changes I've made are updates (laptop and desktop both running ubuntu 10.04).
$ ssh -p nnnnn Desktop
ssh: connect to host Desktop port nnnnn: Connection refused
No messages are generated in any of the logs on Desktop!
$ /usr/sbin/sshd -T
port nnnnn

Debian Configuration :: Sshd Service Never "really" Starts On System Boot
Dec 3, 2010I'm not really sure what the problem is here, but sshd does seem to start on system boot. tty1 does list "OpenBSD Secure Shell server" at least. Also, # service --status-all; indicates that sshd is running, but if I try and actually ssh into my box, I get a "Connection refused" response.
I am, however able to restart the service manually and everything magically works again. Odd...?
General :: Cannot Ssh Into RHEL 5.5 Server Unless SSHD Server Debug Is Enabled?
Aug 11, 2010I cannot ssh into an RHEL 5.5 server (192.168.20.104) from another RHEL 5.5 server (192.168.20.101) unless server debug is turned on 192.168.20.104, and even then, I have to wait several minutes before the connection is established. scp to and from the 104 server is also not working.Here is the debug output on the 101 server when server debug is not enabled on the 104 server-:

Using the suggest NISPOM Red Hat documented settings (located on the system; copy - paste) I have managed to audit failed file open accesses however, this setting only retained if I enter it at the command line (/sbin/auditctl -a ). If I reboot the system or restart the service all my -a (not -w) located in the /etc/audit/audit.rules are not retained.

Feb 22, 2011I've got Fedora 14 running on an EBS volume on Amazon EC2. I've created a few users and enabled port 22. When I set a password for these users, they can successfully ssh into the instance; even if they logout and login again....until:
If I reboot the machine, they can no longer ssh into the machine (permission denied). If I issue the passwd <user> command and change their passwords, they can login again....until I reboot the machine at which time they cannot login again until I change their passwords. The problem exists even from the machine. That is, if root attempts to ssh into 127.0.0.1 using their username/password, the same problem/resolution exists.

Mar 31, 2010My actual mail is via pop3 from verizon. What I've done so far is just pull my pop3 mail onto my main machine at my house. But I'm finding I'd rather have a single imap server on my network so then all my machines could see the same mail.
I don't really want the imap server to poll verizon for mail, I just want the imap server to check pop3 mail at verizon only when one of my mail apps checks into it to look for mail.
Server :: SSHD Daemon Is Failing
Jun 29, 2011I have a Redhat fedora core release 6 (2.6.22.9-61.Ns4) server and form time to time ssh fails although I am still able to ping the device and with a reboot the device will start working correctly so upon further investigation it appears the sshd daemon fails.Not knowing a great deal about Linux I thought I would ask some advice on the path I am thinking of taking. The first would be to put an entry in the cron to try and start the ssdh every hour or so. Would this cause issues in the long term run it multiple times when the sshd daemon was still running?
The Second though I had was having a bash script to check if the process was running and if not restarts it and if it was just exit the program which would seem like a neater way to do it but this is where my limited Linux knowledge hits a wall so was looking for suggestion on how to implement this?

but there is no "sshd" server in this directory.
How else do I (re)start the ssh server? How can I get the version/release number of the sshd server? Where (in which directory) should I put SSH keys?

Jan 19, 2011I can't ssh into my Dad's machine. He can ssh in from another computer on his network, but I can't get in across the internet. I thought we had port forwarding set up correctly on his router. (Westell 327W running verizon software - sshd application, port 22 to port 22, tcp).
I can exchange keys with his server but I get. "Permission denied, please try again" when I try and login. An nmap scan (with -PN option) on his IP shows the open port.

However, we also have a couple of people who travel and don't have static ip's. Is it possible to enable both AllowUsers for the offices and have certificate access for the others?

However, I do not want the server to always be on, only when I manually start So, I did an 'update-rc.d -f ssh remove'and now I don't see any startup scripts in the rcx.d directories any more.However, when I do a 'ps ax', there is always a '/usr/sbin/sshd' process running. I try to kill it but it keeps restarting under a different process ID.How do I disable sshd?

Jun 18, 2010School with linux running on students' laptops, connecting via wlan to a Debian NFS and LDAP server. Every student logs on his/her profile residing on the NFS server.The clients are set up with autofs. Earlier, I had set up the wireless network in /etc/network/interfaces, but this time I decided to configure network manager so as to bring up both wireless and wired network before logon. This setup has been working on for the last fire or five years with only minor changes. Also worked with Karmic Koala, but still with the interfaces file instead of networkmanager. The Vostro is also new here, we've previously used mostly Dell Latitude D505s.
So here is what works:
1: Clients can log on to LDAP and NFS servers both wired and wirelessly. Everything is smooth.
2: While on LAN, shutdown and restart works flawlessly (and quick as a breeze, I'm really impressed by startup/restart/shutdown times, under 25 secs!).
3: Shutdown and restart also works wirelessly when doing it either from a local account or from the GDM chooser.
What doesn't work, however, is shutting down or restarting directly from a networked account connected while only being connected over the wireless network. This is what's being displayed on the terminal after it has tried tho shut down for a while:

If I try ctrl-alt-del at this stage, it says:

And then it will hang again, until I hold the powerbutton for some seconds. The unattended-upgrades part is what seems to be the culprit. I suspect it is about the wireless network not being connected any longer or something like that, but I'm not sure about how to go about debugging shutdown scripts here. I'd be grateful for pointers. I will try and see how it goes with the old interfaces file setup, but I'd rather make nm work.
Fedora Networking :: F13 - SSHD Disconnected (Connection Closed)
Aug 8, 2010I have installed Fedora 13 and updated it. I simply cant use ssh to connect to this Fedora, not even locally. I have enabled port22 in firewall settings and nothing. Tried to disable firewall completely and nothing. I have disabled SELinux (not sure if it has something to do with this, but... ) and nothing. Entered "ALL: ALL" in /etc/hosts.allow and still nothing. Dont know what to do anymore.
Here is what happens when I try to ssh to this machine, even from it:

Looking into Services > sshd and it says "This service is dead."
So I tried:

: FATAL: Creating listener failed: port 22 probably already in use! .....
And still I get disconnected whenever I try to ssh to this machine from anywhere. Services says that sshd is allways dead, even restarting it but I can only restart it by doing a pkill sshd before.
Ubuntu Networking :: Sshd -D At Startup - How To Remove The -D Option
May 19, 2011Somehow the -D option got tacked on to my sshd when I start up. How do I remove the -D option when sshd is started at boot? I'm guessing I need to edit something in /etc/init.d but not sure what. I checked System->Preferences->Startup Applications and the ssh server daemon isn't listed there. And since it is a command line option /etc/ssh/sshd_config is of no help.

Nov 17, 2010I have recently set up two machines with F14 and on both, I am completely unable to make remote login via SSH work. openssh-server is installed and seems to work well:
I have already worked for hours on the problem now, using Google and trying numerous things, and still could not find any solution. On my other machine, which still uses F13, remote login works just fine. Is there any change in the default behaviour of the sshd I am not aware of? I would really appreciate your assistance!
Fedora Networking :: Sshd Can't Bind To Non Standard Port After FC14 Upgrade
Feb 5, 2011I just upgraded from FC 13 to FC 14. I run an ssh server on a port in the 3000s (call it 3xxx, to protect the innocent). When I try to start sshd with the "Port 3xxx" option in sshd_conf, I get the following error in /var/log/secure
sshd[5104]: error: Bind to port 3xxx on 0.0.0.0 failed: Permission denied.
sshd[5104]: error: Bind to port 3xxx on : : failed: Permission denied.
I did not use to have this problem in FC 13. how I can give sshd the necessary permissions now?
