I have Apache 2.2.12, Gallery2, PostgreSQL 8.4, and XCache (PHP cache) humming along on a Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) server. Can someone recommend GUI postgreSQL admin tool for managing the database other than pgAdmin?
View 3 RepliesWhen I recently upgraded my desktop to Karmic, my postgresql 8.3 no longer starts. I've got data in 8.3 that I need, but now no way to access it. Karmic upgrades to Postgresql 8.4, but leaves 8.3. Problem is, I can't seem to start 8.3 no matter what I do (there's no error message. I even tried removing 8.4 entirely--without effect. When I try to start 8.3 (using command line or boot-up manager), there is no error message, either in system logs or in the postgresql log file. There is also no indication of an active postmaster in ps aux or anything listening to postgresql ports in nmap (for that matter, seems there's nothing listening even with 8.4 activated).
I could try to 'upgrade' my data cluster to 8.4. Never tried that before and am concerned about possibly losing data. Also, I made a load of tuning adjustments to 8.3 that I'd have to replicate with 8.4. I'd rather stay with 8.3, if possible. There are also two pieces of software, postgresql-common and postgresql-client-common, that presumably allow one to run two versions of postgresql simultaneously. Maybe this stuff is even the source of my start up problems. No idea where to learn how to use this software, and, esp., whether this would solve the 8.3 start problem.
I just upgraded a Ubuntu Desktop 64bit system from Karmic (9.10) to Lucid (10.04). There were several PostgreSQL 8.3 clusters running on that machine. After the upgrade, postgresql was not able to run anymore.
The package postgresql-8.3 was marked "rc" in dpkg -l I was not able to re-install PostgreSQL 8.3 because of a mismatched dependency. There was no warning. I guess i should have read the release notes, which i didn't. There should have been a warning before it was too late to turn back and upgrade postgresql to 8.4 first. I don't see how this is supposed to work, ever.
I'd like to know if this would be considered a bug, if it is known already and how to correctly file this bug correctly if appropriate (ubuntu-bug ?)
i am running ubuntu 9.10 reasonably fresh install and i need to add a second user. the gui tool for that in ubuntu is not functioning correctly if i open it using the gui it does not ask me for the root password like the instructions say its supposed too and if i force it to take root from terminal with sudo users-admin then i can add a user but the account works exactly once and then it becomes broken and is inaccessible i have 2 dead accounts on my computer now from playing with it trying to get it to work.....
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently decided to try and change my admin password on my usual default account (the one you have to type in, in order to do sudo e.t.c im guessing)a the user account option...and having entered my previous password correctly,t will not allow me to enter a new password, it just seems to hang, (i.e the working icon appears, but having waited a minute or twwo nothing seems to of happened..(cannot press the confirm button). Is there a way to reset the password so that i can set a new one, if i cannot change my own admin password, and i was working on a windows system, i would be screaming system compromise right now, but as its ubuntu, im sure theres a perfectly innocent explantion

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently ran into a situation where the ftp user account suddenly could not login. I used the User and Groups system tool to check the user account and reset the password. I then attempted to use ftp and login with the new password and still could not. I then went to check the permissions on the folder and found that the system partition was full, so using gpartd I was able to resize the system partition.
However this still did not fix the ftp login problem. When I opened the User and Groups tool again, all users,including my main account, except root are no longer displayed and all groups are not showing. If I try to add the original ftpuser account I get the message that the user already exists. And my main account works for login still. If I add a new user, it is not displayed in the list either.
If I do a cat /etc/passwd I see all the users listed including the new one I created and cat /etc/group displays all the groups and everything looks like the users are still associated with the correct groups. I can use passwd to change the account password without error and I can use adduser to add another user. Howerver no users are listed in the User and Groups tool and users still can not login to ftp. I can reinstall proftp if needed but I would like to be able to use the User and Groups tool to administer users again.
PS: Forgot that just before encountering the ftp login problem, Update Manager and some updates listed that I attempted to install but got an error and didn't have time to check why. Now I know that the partition was full.

I selected LDAPv3 and LDAPv3, hostname and SSL/TLS tried fetching base DN but it dint work.
Can not upgrade An upgrade from 'karmic' to 'maverick' is not supported with this tool.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just moved to rackspacecloud and created a Ubuntu 9.10 server. Moved everything over all fine (7-10 wordpress sites). Now I have a couple rails apps that need to move over and run on postgresql 8.4.
I installed postgresql via sudo apt-get as per usual. Usually at this point the postgresql server starts up and I can forget about it. But no luck. I booted it by running /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4 start. When I run that command it boots fine, I can connect via psql no trouble.
I rebooted the machine to see what happened. After boot, apache and mysql started just fine, wp sites came up nicely no trouble. postgresql wouldn't start up.
I have tried installing from source, I have tried using different /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4 scripts. I have no idea what to do.
I have downgraded to upstart to 0.6.3-10. I have apt-get updated, upgraded. I have Googled. I have pushed and pulled.
Usually with any linux issue in the past I have been able to find a solution on the net or work it out myself. This one stumps me to no end.
The other irritating part is that while I wait to work out this issue I am still paying for my old server running my Rails apps.
I have a server with a postgres database, apache and a custom java application.
I am trying to run rsnapshot to backup /home /etc and /var folders.

The owner of the files is root and postgres users. I am using passwordless login to connect to server as user XYZ. XYZ has root access to the server and to the database.
These files are all over the place. Some in /etc and some in /var/lib for instance. How can I best copy these remaining files.
Is there a system admin tool for RHEL on montioring and logging system memory used and released that can dump to a log file?I'm having an issue with memory not being released when an application is closed. I need to have a tool monitor and log so I can troubleshoot to verify that it's an application not the OS.

I don't mind using 8.4, but I need to recover the data from my 8.3 installation, But I'm not sure how to do this as I can't start the 8.3 server, and 8.4 can't read my old data directory.

My next step was to compile from scratch. However, I'm not real experienced with make/compiling and am fond of the organizational structure of RPMs.
The other option I could pursue is keeping 8.3 and installing an isolated 8.2 server for exclusive use by this app.

php5 is configured and running correctly. I verified the config using gallery2 ghcc (gallery host compatibility checker) and running a "test.php" (<?php phpinfo();?>). a2enmod php5 is enabled.
Whenever I try to run the install script in the http://mysite.com/gallery2/install folder, the "index.php" file is not executing it just downloads the "index.php".

I have been having some trouble configuring a means to remotely administer an Ubuntu Sever 10.04 machine i recently built and am hoping for some guidance. I'm sorta new to linux so please forgive my ignorance of conf files and the command line . I am looking to have this server serve as...VPN Server, Minecraft Server, KVM Server, Torrent and Dyn-DNS box.I have managed to install all the KVM settings including bridged networking running (Personal victory there) and sorta have Minecraft running (only need to figure out how to make it launch on boot). Torrents already taken care of since Transmission came along with the ubuntu desktop install .The big thing that is slowing me down is remote management. I installed ubuntu desktop (thankfully its Gnome 2), i know that most people don't like it but its what i'm most familiar with. I tried running VNC but always needed to login on the physical machine before I could use that which defeats the purpose. View 6 Replies View RelatedI have OpenVPN setup and running on my home server (Lucid Lynx). I move around alot and use Portable OpenVPN to connect to my home server. The problem is a lot of the computers I use I do not have admin rights to install the necessary routes to connect. So my question is this. Can OpenVPN be configured to use PPTP protocol? Because I have PortableVPN on my U3 flash drive and that VPN client does not need admin rights to run. If OpenVPN cannot do this, and from my understanding of its archetecture it cannot, but I must admit i am no authority on the matter. Can you suggest a workable solution, ie. install and setup this server software and use this portable client software.

I had installed apache previously on my system, and I think I uninstalled it completely, although remnants might have remained. I have just installed zend server ce php 5.3, and I am having trouble getting it to work. Is there any good LDAP-Administration tool ?
I need to setup test accounts and groups.
For that I can test a LDAP-to-DataBase synchronization tool.
Anything with which I can quickly add users /Groups in the directory structure.
I don't care which LDAP-server, as long as it is stable enough to run for 10 minutes.

I'm trying to add a second NIC to my Karmic 9.10 (Server Edition) as eth1. The new NIC is a D-Link DFE-530TX+ [URL]... It seems like everything should be working fine because it showed up in ifconfig with no configuration after I put it in my machine and it's even is able to get an IP address from the DHCP server in the router.
The problem is that it's not transmitting anything. I can't SSH into it from my other computers on the LAN, and when I ran a sniffer on the interface it was directly connected to there were no packets.
