View 6 RepliesIf I navigate to the c:windowssystem32 and right-click on mstsc.exe, open with Wine, after logging with user and password in the Windows TS (at the office) when I click on Connect, it freezes, the window goes blank and I have to force it to quit. The reason I want to run it is that the Windows Server 2003 R2 doesn't accept any Linux client.I used to access from the XP partition, which doesn't boot anymore so I try to run its mstsc.exe app from Wine.Is there something I could do? Is it about Wine configuration?

I'm sorta new to linux so please forgive my ignorance of conf files and the command line . I am looking to have this server serve as...VPN Server, Minecraft Server, KVM Server, Torrent and Dyn-DNS box.I have managed to install all the KVM settings including bridged networking running (Personal victory there) and sorta have Minecraft running (only need to figure out how to make it launch on boot). Torrents already taken care of since Transmission came along with the ubuntu desktop install .The big thing that is slowing me down is remote management. I installed ubuntu desktop (thankfully its Gnome 2), i know that most people don't like it but its what i'm most familiar with. I tried running VNC but always needed to login on the physical machine before I could use that which defeats the purpose. I am now using xrdp which frankly the performance is terrible compared to what i was getting with the built in VNC server and still needed the monitor on and active to connec

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have OpenVPN setup and running on my home server (Lucid Lynx). I move around alot and use Portable OpenVPN to connect to my home server. The problem is a lot of the computers I use I do not have admin rights to install the necessary routes to connect. So my question is this. Can OpenVPN be configured to use PPTP protocol? Because I have PortableVPN on my U3 flash drive and that VPN client does not need admin rights to run. If OpenVPN cannot do this, and from my understanding of its archetecture it cannot, but I must admit i am no authority on the matter. Can you suggest a workable solution, ie. install and setup this server software and use this portable client software.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI currently have a server running Windows Home Server and was wanting to know if Ubuntu Server could do the following requirements I currently enjoy
1. Media Streaming, to multiple devices simultaniously i.e. pc/xbob360/PS3 all at the same time. Possibly re-encoding OTF.
2. Remote Access, not just to the server but linking(so i can rdp to my main rig through the server from any internet location) to other systems on the "Home" Network both Linux and Windows.
3. Drive Pooling with redundancy, I want to be able to add and remove HDD and just have it expand the pool so current folders can just grow, but also have it duplicate or make redundant copies so if a HDD fails it can still be recovered.
4. Backup of machines on the network, either manual or scheduled, of both Linux and Windows machines
5. App sharing would be a plus but not required, so I could run a Linux app from the server seamlessly on my windows pc.
6. Basic file storage and browsable structure from windows machines.
I realise this may be a tall order and I don't expect it to be easy or straight forward in any way, but I really hate WHS, it has the slowest file access speed of any os i have ever seen, and is so buggy its unbelievable.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI had installed apache previously on my system, and I think I uninstalled it completely, although remnants might have remained. I have just installed zend server ce php 5.3, and I am having trouble getting it to work. When I log in to the admin interface, it told me it couldn't start the webserver, so I go to restart apache, and it gives me this:* Starting web server apache2 Syntax error on line 6 of /etc/apache2/sitesenabled/zendserver_gui.conf:Invalid command 'php_admin_flag', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configurationThis has to do with php_mod some how... but I am not sure how to fix this, or where to start, since I am relatively new to actually setting up apache.I thought this might have something to do with libapache2-mod-php... so I went to reinstall it, and ran this:
mburns@mb2449-laptop:~$ sudo aptitude install libapache2-mod-php5

I have a scheduled backup to run on our server at work and since the 7/12/09 it has be making 592k files instead of 10Mb files, In mysql-admin (the GUI tool) I have a stored connection for the user 'backup', the user has select and lock rights on the databases being backed up. I have a backup profile called 'backup_regular' and in the third tab along its scheduled to backup at 2 in the morning every week day. If I look at one of the small backup files generated I see the following:
Code:
-- MySQL Administrator dump 1.4
--
-- ------------------------------------------------------
-- Server version`
[code]....
It seems that MySQL can open and write to the file fine, it just can't dump
The Fedora Directory Service LDAP database administration console was working okay until I rebooted the server.
- dirsrv starts okay
- but dirsrv-admin just freezes without any error messages.
How I should get started to fix it?
I've tried Googling this question with no luck. I'm trying to get a program called Aptana to run as admin so I can edit my website under /opt/lampp/htdocs. Here's the link to Aptana: /home/richard/.Aptana Studio 3/.AptanaStudio3
What would I have to put into the shortcut command to run as admin?
I'm installing a new laptop for a friend of mine and he wants 3 user accounts, similair to how he runs his windows setup.
1, an admin account, we have called this account peacemaker.
2. his account
3. an account for his girlfriend.
The problem we have is that if we want to do anything from the terminal that requires elevated priviledges, sudo does not accept his password or that of peacemakers. we have done sudo -i -u peacemaker but it still doesn't accept either password, stating his account is not in the sudoers list.
I'm not a massive expert here, but research brought me to this page:[URL]... But that then just means his account has admin rights, which is what we were trying to avoid. We wanted a setup similair to windows where if you want to run someting with elevated privledges if pops up asking for the admin password. This works in the gui, but not in the terminal.
So in short, my question is, is there anyway of having the terminal accept peacemakers user rights from the his normal user account? If I add the account to the sudoers list like it suggests, does this again just give his account the prilvedges rather than saying supply me with the password for peacemaker.
this is probably not really needed and he can just have his account as the main user, but coming from a windows background, he would prefer the 3 user accounts model (2 normal users, 1 admin)
While messing around with file permissions and ownership of /var/www/ i seem to have locked myself out of being able to administer users on my 9.10 system.
when I go to the user administration screen in the icon with the keys is grayed out. with the message "not authorized to make changes". My account seems to have lost admin access. But, I'm the only user on the system.
I presumed I somehow changed my group status from the root group to something else
but, sudo usermod -g root [my name] just returns "no changes made"
All I can do for now is run as the su from the terminal. Is it possible to log into gnome with a root account?
I downloaded The Witcher for windows from Wine and I'm trying to run it but it says I have to run it as the admin the first time the game is ran. I don't know how to run it as admin lol. I've only been using ubuntu for about a week now. If you can let me know how to do it from the terminal AND from shortcuts, that would be great because I'm trying to know what all I can do with ubuntu.

I try to understand the way the network-admin retrieve and set information about the network connections, and after reviewing thee code, I still dont undertsnad how it does it. I thought that it should use maybe linux commands such as iwconfig or ifconfig or by using ioctl for get/set the parameters of the wireless, but I did not find such things in the code. It also does not use AT commands for modem devices parameters.I see that it uses liboobs files, but after veiwing the code, I still don't understand how it works.
I thank you if you can give me some clue about it.These question comes since I need to make a program which connects to wireless devices (possibly several wifi and modems devices can be connected ), and I try to think how to set/get the network parameters, I thought that a good start will be to look at how network-admin works.
Whenever I try to do anything that requires administrative permissions, including Synaptic, the Update Manager, or installing something on the Software Center, the "Starting Administrative Application" task comes up on the window list, but then the window does not come up and whatever action was supposed to be taken does not happen; no error messages, nothing. Also, whenever I use su or sudo in the command prompt, nothing shows up when I type my password; then when I hit Enter, it gives me an authentication error.
EDIT: It seems that the "Add/Remove Applications" program as well as the Software center do not have this problem. Synaptic and the Updates Manager, however, still do not work.
I recently decided to try and change my admin password on my usual default account (the one you have to type in, in order to do sudo e.t.c im guessing)a the user account option...and having entered my previous password correctly,t will not allow me to enter a new password, it just seems to hang, (i.e the working icon appears, but having waited a minute or twwo nothing seems to of happened..(cannot press the confirm button).
