I wanted to make a SysLog Server in Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop to collect the startup log of all the workstation inside the local area network,which should have a similar functionality to this guide here:Debian Syslog Server..However, when editing the sysklogd, i noticed it was empty and does not have any default values, along with the /etc/syslog.conf, which does not also exist.
View 2 RepliesI am currently using Syslog-NG to make the log files in the format of: $R_YEAR$R_MONTH$R_DAY$R_HOUR and I need to be a little more granular.
I am wondering if there is a way to to divide the hour by 12, making a new log file every 5 minutes. We have been using LogRotate, but when Syslog-NG is restarted we have some data loss. Is this possible? Another solution I can think of would be to add $R_MINUTE (or whatever it is) and run a cron job every 5 minutes to concatenate the files.
I'm guessing its possible but I can't seem to find any documentation on how to do this.I've tried playing with entries at the top of my syslog.conf file like:

When building 8.04 servers, I reconfigure snmpd's logging options to prevent copious low priority messages being logged whenever our network management workstation polls them. I edit /etc/default/snmpd and change line 11 from:

I wish it was under better circumstances...very morning at 6:25am syslog-ng stops logging, right after it attempts to log rotate. its odd... the daemon doesnt die... it gets a new PID, but doesnt write the output to /var/log/syslog.Yet if I manually restart or reload syslog-ng it works great... its just like it doesnt like the logrotate...I have googled around and tried a few things...first I changed the postrotate in the logrotate.d/syslog-ng

I'm running a PRI and when the PRI goes down, it logs a "DEACTIVED" in the log. I would like an email telling me this so I know to get on it and fix it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded a Ubuntu server from version 8.04 to 10.04 and after a reboot the webmin and syslog-ng server do not start at boot anymore. I can start them manually by doing /etc/init.d/webmin start and /etc/init.d/syslong-ng start and everything works fine until I root again. Granted this machine is rarely rebooted but when it is, I don't want to have to remember to start these services. I have tried a full removal of syslog-ng and reinstall but to no avail. The entries are in the rc directories like they should and the links are valid.

I have it set up with a static local IP, and I've configured DynDNS to link up with my router and allow my server to go live to the internet. I have all the appropriate ports unlocked, with the exception of port 80. This port is blocked by my ISP (Charter) and I can't use it. Due to this, I configured my router to listen on port 81, and direct it to my server.
So, In order to view it, you need to go to the IP XXX.xxx.XXX.xxx:81 Today, I registered (www.online-self.com) in hopes of getting around my current mask (provided by DynDNS.com (omegame.selfip.com). So here is my dilemma, When I go to the host of my domain name , I want to redirect my DNS to my server IP.
I can't seem to do it though? They want a strict IP address, no port extensions. How do I get around this so that my domain name and IP address link up? I'm thinking I may be missing a step, or maybe I needed to register a domain name that simply redirects? I'm starting to get confused on what I should do next. Can I even do this?
For the last couple of days I've been building on a server built from an old (well, not too old) computer. My goal is to use it for multiple purposes like a webserver, home automation, and possibly a future media center (if I get my TV card to work). But perhaps the main reason is to get wireless access to the internet for my laptop, and to connect it to my other (stationary) computer. When I'm done I'm also planning on writing a guide for setting up an access point with the rt61 chipset, as there seems to be many people looking for this. First I just need to get through this problem though .
For this I use two wired NICs, eth0 for the local interface to my computer, and eth1 as an external interface for the internet. Moreover I use a wireless NIC (DWL-G510 using the rt61pci driver) in conjunction with the daemon hostapd to provide a wireless interface for portable computers to connect to. eth1 gets its IP through DHCP from my ISP, while eth0 and wlan0 have static IPs on two different subnets like this (copied from /etc/network/interfaces):

I am running a headless Ubuntu 10.04 server with the 2.6.32-28-generic kernel. For what I can figure out no single direct cause I get a high load average and the following syslog output at random intervals. Generally the load average will drop back down to normal however the kernel errors will still continue What little I have been able to find has pointed to memory issues. I am not totaly convinced this is the cause as the server will be showing >50% free when the errors are happening.

I guess with major changes to syslog-ng, php-syslog going to licensing cost, and major overhaul to the syslog plugin with cacti - alot of documention was either disjointed, outdated or I just couldn't find it.this was performed on an 11.04 Ubuntu Server tall. I already had Cacti up and running and just needed to make it also a syslog collector.This guide assumes you already have mysql running, and cacti is already in place. If something looks wrong - please correct me. Stop syslog-ng if you want. Changes should not take effect until you restart it.Should save the default syslog-ng configuration if you want to be safe. (I have tried a bunch of other ips too and none outside its network are pingable) I'm not sure if this is a problem with my server or a problem with the networking outside the server. I have been emailing my server provider and they keep on insisting the problem is with the server and that their network is working fine. Apparently all of their other servers work and they can login into the gateway and ping 8.8.8.8 from there. So they just want to reinstall the OS, but I thought I'd post here to see if anyone has any ideas.
Here is some info I have gained while troubleshooting: I haven't changed any settings at all on the server for months. I haven't done any updates for about a week. The strangest thing is that this is intermittent, there have been a few times in the last 24 hours where I have been able to ping 8.8.8.8 or other ips, but 98% of the time I can't. I have also tried rebooting the server, which had no effect. I can ping the gateway, and I can ping other servers on the same subnet. I can ssh onto the server from my home internet connection, and I can view webpages on apache, so incoming connections work.
How can I set my server to listen at a different port for http access. I would like to use port 8080 (to circumnavigate isp blocks). Also can I do the same thing for sftp connections?

Then "not permission" (I was the root then).
So, sudo /etc/init.d/iptables.cf start
Then, "command not found".

A File Server with accounts. That when you try to access the file server in explorer you need to provide a username and password.And that you( as the administrator) manage the privileges for the server/folder/file. so with different permissions.

So when cron does the logrotate, there is a new logfile but its empty. After i restart the syslogd it gets back to its normal logging.
What am i missing? All this works with CentOS, why is Ubuntu such a pain...
