I know that virtual terminals 1-6 are all text terminals and 7 is the local X. How can I get my laptop to automatically create a virtual terminal on 12 that's dedicated to receiving the X display from the server?
I know how to get it over SSH/putty. And also how to stop the local and restart the X client on 7 to use the remote. But one of the beauties of Linux is the automation and multi-user environment. It's essentially going to act as a KVM with gui replacement over IP.
I want make several virtual Host using apache2. Each virtual host will have virtual domains in localhost with different root.
View 4 Replies View RelatedBeing on a low budget and I can't afford to buy Redhat would you recommend using Fedora for setting up dedicated servers? I know Fedora is known to be "bleeding edge" in technology, which concerns me with the stability of the server. Would you recommend a more stable Linux distro? I was also wondering if there is any way to know what these web hosting companies are using in their servers: [url]
View 9 Replies View RelatedIn first place i am sorry about my horrible English. I want to make a web site with a virtual host of apache visible by all the computers connected to my networking. I put this in the end of the file "/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf"("192.168.1.194" is the IP address of my computer. The default gateway IP address is "192.168.1.1"):

It works if i go to "http://192.168.1.194/" with the browser of the computer with apache inside, but on the others PC of my networking this method don't work!
I'm using Debian 5 with Exim 4 on my VPS. My purpose is to make mailboxes for each virtual host on my server. What do I have: 1. Exim is set correctly - receiving mail from [URL]... is successfull. 2. Mail for [URL]... is delivered, and the mail for [URL]... too. But [URL]... is the site written to /etc/hosts (it's localhost), and [URL]... is virtual host. But mail from both boxes writes to /var/mail/mail. Now what do I need: 1. Make mail for [URL]... store in [URL].... and mail for [URL].. store in www/Maildir. 2. Make mailboxes like [URL].... to receive mail by Thunderbird. 3. Set passwords for [URL]... and [URL]... (I don't want to enter my system user/root passwords).
View 2 Replies View RelatedI currently want to set up a network with 2 Ubuntu servers (mail and web) in a DMZ in order to separate them from an internal network. I want to use a dedicated Linux firewall. This firewall will have 3 network interfaces on it. One network interface will connect to the external router/modem (router and modem in one box), one interface will connect to the DMZ and the other interface will connect to the internal network. The router/modem lets you put, I think it's 1 or 2, interfaces in a DMZ.
But, when I think of any of the dedicated firewall's or servers' interfaces it doesn't make sense to me to put any of them in the router/modem's DMZ (I think it would be better for the dedicated firewall's and the servers' interfaces to have static private I.Ps ie 192.168.2.4 etc right?). What I mean is that even if, as far as the router/modem is concerned, none of the interfaces were in a DMZ, the area where the servers are would still effectively be a perimeter network and with such a set up would still be, effectively,a DMZ, right?

I've set the VirtualBox configuration to use a Bridged network connection so that I can access the internet through the Ubuntu guest and to access the Ubuntu apache server through my Windows host. This is all running on my laptop which connects to various routers using dhcp (some ip addresses start with 198. while others start with 10.) What I need is a single static ip address (or hostname/url) to setup my cms (drupal).how I can accomplish this given the varying routers the laptop connects to?
View 6 Replies View RelatedClean install of 10.04 Server 32 bit.Only services OpenSSH Server and Print Server.Machine boots and can be accessed through ssh.Virtual terminals (cntl-alt-1,2,3,4,... do not result in video to the monitor (no sync) or a display. If I type blind, I can log in, ssh back to my other machine, and create a file. So the virtual terminal is there and listening to the keyboard and running, just not creating a display.
This machine has been working fine with 08.10 for quite time up until yesterday, so I don't believe it is a hardware problem.Any ideas why the video on the virtual terminals would not work?
I have a virtual private server that I am trying to connect to using x11vnc. I ran this through ssh to setup gnome
sudo apt-get install gnome-core
sudo apt-get install gdm
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
I later ran sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop to see if that would help.
Code:
#cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
l
Code:
#sudo startx
Fatal server error:
xf860OpenConsole: Cannot open /dev/tty0 (No such file or directory)
I assume this is because it probably doesn't have a video card.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am trying to setup a sendmail server on my dedicated server. It was pre-configured to use exim from cpanel. Is it possible to use exim for all emails from a a certain domain i setup on the server and sendmail for others?
ex.
domain1.com -> exim
domain2.com -> sendmail
If it is possible can someone let me know how i would go about doing this? If it is not how would i disable exim and use sendmail for all mail?
I'm not sure is this is possible or not, but what I would like to do is take my public address mydomain.com and configure a virtual host something.mydomain.com only instead of having the content on the same server I would like it to point to the IP of my virtual machine that is in my private network and display that page publicly. Does anyone know if this is possible, or how to do it? I have done this with port forwards, but would like them both to be on the same port.

My questions are as follows:
- What kind of server/service should I rent - dedicated or vps?
- Is one IP-Address enough to connect, say, 100 user? (I plan to run IPsec or OpenVPN, maybe PPTP)
- What Bandwith and/or traffic limits I need to consider to make the service reasonably fast for the users?
- Which Linux-distro should I use? Ubuntu Server, CentOS, FreeBSD, Debian etc?
- How much RAM and HDD space is recommended for such an endevour?
- Any advice on the processor type the server should have?
- Is 100M network ok or better 1000M?
- What means 100Mbps shared bandwidth in contrast to 10Mbps dedicated guaranteed per server?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a home server that I have been running for some years and am constantly tweaking / playing with it resulting in numerous reinstalls (and upsetting the wife!). It does nothing critical but I use it mainly for:
backing up my laptop files
XBMC
ZoneMinder
Due to the number of times that I manage to break it, I have now thought about setting it up as a base system but with virtual machines looking after the seperate 'components'. The machine is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ with 2Gb RAM. First of all do you think it is powerful enough to run XBMC and ZM in seperate virtual machines? - I appreciate the more RAM the better but at the moment I am sticking to 2Gb.
I was also wondering what sort of issues may arise for the audio and video areas I will be using. XBMC currently outputs through an HDMI cable to the TV and ZM recieves video signals through a seperate video card. ( I have had my concerns in the past that there have been conflicts in the way I have set things up!). I have read a number of guides about setting a system up with virtual machines but not really found any articles about the practicalities of using such a set up at home. before I commit and spend a week pulling my hair out trying to get it all to work!
I am in the process of setting up a couple of virtual servers in a cloud environment. I am currently working on my application server (Server 1) and am stuck on the creation of my ruleset for this server.
I need to allow SSH, FTP, HTTP, HTTPS, and PING on this server. This server will also need to be able to talk with a couple of database servers as well as a memcache server (all internally within my cloud environment)
I have been reading on iptables, since I have never messed with them before, and have come up with the ruleset I will paste below. I have taken other steps to secure my server...changing ssh port, not allowing root to login via ssh without logging in as a user, turning off unnecessary daemons, editing my hosts allow/deny files, just to name a few.
I am a newbie to iptables, so I would love a bit of helpful advice, criticism, and even a good explanation why I should add or remove or edit something. I really want to know the how AND the why!

Is it possible and SAFE to delete files via FTP from the /var/cache/apt/archives?
I am currently having an issue attempting to set up a dedicated server for source games (TF2, CS:S, L4D2). The required port (27015), along with most others, appears closed to the rest of the world and upon a port scan with DMZ hosting on (therefore no router interference between the internet and my computer) only a few ports are open (80, 139, 443, 445). My ISP does not block ports so therefore the only issue I can find is with my computer running Ubuntu 11.04. I have ensured that all traffic is allowed via iptables and I can't think of anything else that would have ports closed.

[notice] caught SIGTERM, shutting down
I have tried to search from Google but could not find much information about this error.
When you need to change something on the server you can hook up a monitor and a keyboard and do it through the console.
I would like to hook up an external monitor in this fashion for a desktop. The current video card can only support a single display. So I was hoping there was someway to use a second monitor as just a permanent console since simple text shouldn't require a video card?
