Ubuntu Servers :: Grub Failure After Upgrading In 10.10?

I upgraded the boot loader using apt-get upgrade. So Grub upgraded and I believe it automatically ran the upgrade-grub-from-legacy executable. I was confused on what to do so I selected all drives. When I did that, I received a bunch of messages, I will write only non-redundant ones:
mdadm group disk not found (many times, over 20 or so) installation finished, no errors reported (4 times, I guess for my 4 hard drives)Found linux image vmlinux Found initrd image Next, I reboot, and absolutely nothing, not even a grub prompt!! So I tried the following:
1) grub-install /dev/sda1
2) Super grub disk
3) Ubuntu Server Installation CD in rescue mode trying, I get the infamous red error screen when trying to install grub
Nothing worked! My partitions are all there and I can see them and mount them from rescue CD, but I cannot boot to the system, My partitions layout:
One LVM sitting on two RAID-1 Drives Sitting on all four hard drives sda, sdb, sdc, sdd
One Root partition /dev/md2 in RAID-1 Drive sitting on two of the four drives (sda2 and sdb2) Four bios_grub partitions sda1, sdb1, sdc1 and sdd1 each ~1MB Two Swap partitions on two raid drives
I would give more detail but I think the problem is probably in the bootloader configuration because I can access all partitions including LVM and RAIDs from the rescue CD.
I'm attempting to upgrade my Ubuntu 8.04 VPS to 10.04 and I'm having some trouble with the final stages of the installation. This is a section of the output I get (seems to be the bit that is going wrong):

P.S. I don't mind doing another fresh upgrade from the initial 8.04. So the problem is just how to prevent these errors from coming up again.
when I try to upgrade from Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS towards Lucid Lynx 10.04 LTS (via internet, not ISO-CD), following error is displayed:
" Could not install the upgrades Error during commit 'E:Couldn't configure pre-depend jre for openoffice.org-writer2latex, probably a dependency cycle.' Restoring original system state "
I deleted all Open Office package and other options were checked, but no success. Hardware: Notebook Toshiba Qosmio G45-AV480.
Have a dual boot: vista & ubuntu (64bit). Clicked the upgrade to 10.04 in update manager & spent a couple of hours downloading & installing. Had several requests about menu.lst. Which i replied keep the current Big mistake (i think) because on the reboot all the options are for 9.1. Tried the top option and 10.04? (i think) comes up but mouse & keyboard are inop.Booted with super grub cd & let it boot gnu/linux. Looks like 10.04 came up (how can u tell?) and seems to run ok. So what can i do to get the 10.04 options when rebooting without the grub cd?
Upgrade calls for ensuring latest updates to Karmic are installed before upgrading to 10.04 LTS. Every attempt to update hangs, yielding the following dialogue:

I know why this happened, but I need to know what problems it's going to cause and how I can re-install / fix the problem. I have my /tmp folder mounted as -noexec ... so when I did a recent update to my 10.04.1 LTS server installation, I got the following errors:
She was running a script in R (which was supposed to take a regression from R and output to LaTeX) but it failed, causing a "massive core dump" and shut down her computer. She rebooted, performed a recovery, but her system was still running slowly so she decided to upgrade to Narwhal. At this point she received an error message saying that the upgrade was interrupted by an eclipse package, and it failed, saying that her (disk? she couldn't remember) "may not be recoverable." Now, when I try to boot from GRUB, from any kernel listed ($22, $25, $27, and $28 ), I get the following error message:
I booted from a LiveCD, and it worked (including the splash screen). I then scanned the hard drive with smartctl, and looked at it in Gparted. Nothing seemed amiss. I could open files stored on the hard drive from the LiveCD, so I think there is something wrong with the boot process but I don't know how to fix it. One idea I've got is to run Super GRUB Disk and see if that fixes my boot problems.
I have a triple boot system running Ubuntu, WinXP, and Win7.I had Ubuntu running fine on its own partition (sda1) but an upgrade from Karmic to Lucid turned it into a dog.So I tar-ed my /home filesystem, split sda1 into 2 new extended partitions, then did a clean install of Lucid with / on sda5, and /home on sda6.I should also mention that I have already tried re-installing Grub from a live USB to no avail.
I grabbed an old laptop (a Dell Latitude D600) and installed Ubuntu 10.10 from the CD.Straight from the CD, it worked fine, including a reboot. I then ran an update, and now booting gives me the following message:

Just finished trying to solve this by using other threads / Fresh install today of Ubuntu 10.10 configured as dual-boot with WIN XP. Grub loads latest kernel with no problem at all as long as the keyboard is NOT touched in any way. Touch any key and grub hangs infinitely. There is never any success in changing boot selection in any way. I tried reloading grub from the LiveCD version 10.10 with no success, then I tried reloading it from a 10.04LTS LiveCD which totally blanked grub from the boot process entirely, then I tried purging grub and downloading new code as instructed in another tutorial here on the forums. After the final effort I have restored access to 10.10 on the HDD so that I can boot without the LiveCD, but I am back to the choice-less grub! It's 10.10 or nothing! I need complete instructions on how to obtain and document the diagnostic information needed to trouble-shoot the issue so that I can provide the data you need to assist me in repairing this boot loader...When I downloaded the new code and installed it, the system recognized and properly identified all partitions and OSes on the system. I should boot from /dev/sda and the linux partition is located on /dev/sda6 the WIN partition is on /dev/sda5. I did notice some strange information concerning the starting and ending locations of the partitions when I was attempting to correct this issue. If that information seems relevant I will post it upon request. (if instructed on how to do so) Should I repost this as a bug report? (Am I posting in the wrong location?)
I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04. Now after rebooting I don't get the grub menu anymore nor can I get into ubuntu or vista (I used to dual boot between ubuntu and vista). I get to a black screen with an blinking cursor.
I'm running a dual-boot with linux mint and Windows. I have an E-machines desktop with :760 GB Hard Drive6GB RAMNVidia GeForce Graphics card 6150se IntegratedAMD Athalon II X2 235e dual-core processorMy problem is getting my grub to boot into Linux Mint, and the problem may lie with my graphics card. Whenever I install the linux mint for the first time, I am prompted to activate my proprietary NVidia graphics driver, which I do. Then I am asked to reboot. Upon reboot, the system gets to the grub menu, accepts my selection to boot linux mint, then the "progress dots" appear on the screen. After about 8 seconds, the screen switches into command prompt mode. I never get to the graphical sign-on screen. All I get is the console sign-on prompts.
From there my only option seems to be to reboot. (sudu reboot). After which, of course, I am forced to go into Windows vs. Linux to avoid the problem. Once Windows has loaded up, I do a restart and go back into Linux Mint . Finally, I get to the Linux sign-on graphical screen.To summarize, i cannot restart linux mint without getting stuck staring at a console screen. I can get back into linux mint if i use the command 'sudo reboot', and, from the grub menu, choosing to go into Windows. From Windows, I then do a restart and end up back at the grub screen again, but this time when I select linux mint, things work and I am given the sign-on gui.If I choose to not install the graphics driver (and put up with the annoying reminder to activate one), the system dual boots without a problem.
I have installed ubuntu 9.10 and everything was working fine. Just a minutes ago a window popped up telling me that a complete update couldn't be completed, and asked me to go on with a partial update. I did it and then a window popped up (I think it was debconf running) asking me if I wanted to delete phpmyadmin database configuration or if I wanted to keep it... seemed like the updater was removing quite a bunch of packages!
After that I was presented with a long list of packages to be removed (among them apache2, php5, linux headers, etc.) I thought it was going to remove them in order to reinstall them latter, so I let it go) but now there's no ubuntu entry in the grub menu, so I had to boot with windows! Right now I'm downloading ubuntu 9.10 livecd to give it a try...
I am currently running Ubuntu 9.10 on my desktop (no duel boots, its a single os on the computer) I wish to upgrade to 10.04 using the update manager, but the only thing that is stopping me is the new Grub.
Will the upgrade replace the current grub to the new one? because I DONT want it to change it, as previously I had issues with Grub 2 failing to install onto my hd. I just want it the same as it is now but with 10.04
So, I had Win7 and Ubuntu 10.10 in dualboot and after upgrading to 11.04 I managed to screw up GRUB, it didnt boot into Win7 anymore. After that I got rid of both ubuntu and swap partitions and merged them to Win7 partition via Gparted and made a clean installation of 10.10 again next to existing Win7 hoping to fix GRUB and be able to boot into Win7, but now when I try to boot into Win7, I only see '_' blinking on top left and nothing happens, Ubuntu works fine.
I moved from 8.04.2 to 10.04.2 and tried to upgrade from GRUB Legacy to Grub2. I must have made a mis-step somewhere in the process as on boot it now tells me

GRUB Loading, Error 15 _ Is there a nuke from orbit, no finesse way of just ripping all the existing GRUB mess out and installing GRUB2 from Boot disk? for instance should I be just be able to boot with a LIVE CD mount the primary disk of this machine and enter the below in a terminal without messing up any further?
I recently got my EEEPC and wanted to get linux on it. So I did some looking around and this Eeebuntu seems to be the best fit. I'm having some issues here though. I poked around on the Ubuntu site (because I have limited experience there) and googled and searched this forum. I found several solutions but none worked. Ilimited my swap to 1 gig, I created a home partition and a 10gb "/" partition I tried super grub and came back to the error 15 not so lucky grub boot i have dont largest continous install. Manual install and an install side by side.
I swallowed 3 screams and the urge to chuck this pretty little netbook but the ubuntu on my dell laptop has renewed my hope... somewhat. As of right now I'm booting from a live cd in an external DVD drive. I will note that my installs get to 94% or so before the fatal grub error and super grub in its cd form can boot it but super grub boot through uboot cannot. nor can it install or fix grub. I had Vista loaded on my computer, then loaded the BRILLIANT ubuntu onto a second partition! This gave me the GRUB boot loader which is fine.My 2 points are;1. Can I change the position of the items in the GRUB loader so if no keys are pressed it loads Windows automatically?? (Its for my sons computer!!) Also can I edit the GRUB so its less complicated for him??2.I want to update his Windows to Win 7, free upgrade! This over rights the Win partition and will therefore get rid of my GRUB loader. When I have updated how can I get back the ability to chose between booting Win 7 and Ubuntu?? How do I get the GRUB back?
I'm having a problem installing Ubuntu Studio 9.10-alternate-amd64 onto my machine. This is the third attempt and I keep running into the same problem. Grub Boot Loader will only install to 16% when a screen pops up:

choose language configure the keyboard detect and mount CD-rom etc...
choosing the option "Install Grub boot loader on a hard disk" sends me back to the Grub install and once again at 16% the Ubuntu Installer Main Menu pops up. Choosing the option "Install the Lilo Boot Loader on a hard disk" resolves in an Lilo-install failure and i'm directed back to the Installer Main Menu. The option "Finish the installation" sends me back to the same menu..I'm stumped as to what to do... a disk check ensured me that the instal-dvd is valid though I can't get past this silly install menu.
2 weeks ago, my power supply blew, during close-down. My system is a SUSE Linux 10.1 and openSUSE 11.1 dual boot with WInXP (for those family things). After replacing the power supply my system had no root partition, or loader. It said something like "Invalid Partition table". Grub had gone! So following swerdna's "How to Boot into openSUSE" tutorial I used the openSuse 11.1 install CD rescue option to get to the command prompt, su'd, went to grub and followed the stated commands. So far so good.
However the new grub entry openSUSE (Failsafe) has a problem. It starts to boot in the usual way, but I note fatal Module errors in the boot log relating to sata_nv not found, ide_pci_generic not found etc, and Fatal error inserting edd (/lib/modules/2.6.27.39-0.2-default/kernel/driver/firmware/edd.ko): no such device but uses udev as boot source until Waiting for device /dev/disk/by-id/ataST3120827AS-4M60PX7V-part6...... and then it exits to /bin/sh.

I was trying to install Fedora to dual boot with Vista in the middle it said that the installation failed and now it will not run grub to let me choose between Windows and Mint which I had installed. All that happens is it shows a command line and says "grub rescue>"
I upgraded from grub to grub2 recently, and during an update of my system, it ran the update-grub command which prompted a window asking me where to install Grub. Since I didn't know what partition to install it to and the help suggested to install it to all if I was unsure what partition to install it to - I accidentally installed Grub to my Windows partitions (both the regular and the recovery console).
So now, I can't boot into Windows - the computer just hangs after Grub with a blinking cursor and I have to perform a hard reset. Is there any way for me to restore the boot record for the windows partition without having to reinstall windows from the ground up?! I can't use Linux for my webbanking and other important tasks, so (unfortunately) I need Windows back desperately!
I had a nicely working karmic 64bit/windows XP install, but the "upgrade" button to 10.04 has finally got the better of me. I have an Ubuntu box running server 11.04 that is displaying a weird behavior when logging into the CLI. The message below will scroll for about 15-20 seconds when you first log in, but then it goes to the normal shell and everything seems to work fine.
I have several remotely hosted boxes (running 9.10 Server 64-bit) that I'd like to upgrade at some point to Lucid Server, preferably using do-release-upgrade.
Is this possible currently via SSH, without lockout or breakage?
Theoretically, I can have the datacenter staff do the upgrade for me, but I'd prefer to do it myself if it's possible to do so.

I tend to update stuff slower than most - I'm still using Hardy and I probably won't upgrade to Lucid until June-ish. I wanted to test drive GRUB2 so I upgraded following instructions here:When I chainloaded GRUB2, I got a menu that only contained Ubuntu; my Windows Vista bootloader entry had disappeared. I couldn't find a sample "40_custom" entry to modify when I tried to create an entry for Vista myself. Had no problem booting into Ubuntu and I could still boot Vista from the old menu. Spent about 20 minutes on it, then I gave up and reinstalled legacy GRUB.
