I have a triple boot system running Ubuntu, WinXP, and Win7.I had Ubuntu running fine on its own partition (sda1) but an upgrade from Karmic to Lucid turned it into a dog.So I tar-ed my /home filesystem, split sda1 into 2 new extended partitions, then did a clean install of Lucid with / on sda5, and /home on sda6.I should also mention that I have already tried re-installing Grub from a live USB to no avail.
View 7 Replies View RelatedJust finished trying to solve this by using other threads / Fresh install today of Ubuntu 10.10 configured as dual-boot with WIN XP. Grub loads latest kernel with no problem at all as long as the keyboard is NOT touched in any way. Touch any key and grub hangs infinitely. There is never any success in changing boot selection in any way. I tried reloading grub from the LiveCD version 10.10 with no success, then I tried reloading it from a 10.04LTS LiveCD which totally blanked grub from the boot process entirely, then I tried purging grub and downloading new code as instructed in another tutorial here on the forums. After the final effort I have restored access to 10.10 on the HDD so that I can boot without the LiveCD, but I am back to the choice-less grub! It's 10.10 or nothing! I need complete instructions on how to obtain and document the diagnostic information needed to trouble-shoot the issue so that I can provide the data you need to assist me in repairing this boot loader...When I downloaded the new code and installed it, the system recognized and properly identified all partitions and OSes on the system. I should boot from /dev/sda and the linux partition is located on /dev/sda6 the WIN partition is on /dev/sda5. I did notice some strange information concerning the starting and ending locations of the partitions when I was attempting to correct this issue. If that information seems relevant I will post it upon request. (if instructed on how to do so) Should I repost this as a bug report? (Am I posting in the wrong location?)

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04. Now after rebooting I don't get the grub menu anymore nor can I get into ubuntu or vista (I used to dual boot between ubuntu and vista). I get to a black screen with an blinking cursor.

I just completed the latest updates to Fedora 14 - I have mono and wine on the system as well - so they were also updated. Now the only screen I can get is the failsafe (bash).
How do I recover my KDE desktop? (I noticed there were some updates for the KDE as well). I suspect something has failed during the update (selinux was also updated).
While running the update manager my system froze and all that I knew to do was power down and power up again. When I first started the update said 18.5 MB and on restart it said 17.x MB. I restarted the update manager and it failed with errors.
The last message says "E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) A package failed to install. Trying to recover:" but no progress in 1/2 hour. If I try to copy the messages to the clipboard it says that cntl-c will abort the operation so I haven't done that. From the top of the "Details" there are about eight "Invalid archive signature" messages. I don't know how to proceed.
After performing the periodic update on 2010-05-26 including libc, libc6 and libgtk2.0 my system fails on boot with the following error message:

This morning my update manager came up so I clicked to update. About halfway through the update an error message popped up & said to restart my system. I restarted my system and now have a black screen with the following message:

I read around earlier & tried to use a Ubuntu disk and reboot but I have the same error.
I'm using a Dell Inspiron computer, it's just over a year old. I keep up with all the updates but unfortunately cannot say for sure which updates were taking place because I just hit the update box.
After a kernel update ubuntu would not boot. So found this procedure using the live update cd. Update grub.cfg & delete everything down to but not including the first line that starts with 'menuentry' . Then boot works ok. A couple of weeks ago it started on my notebook. Is anyone @ hq listening & able to fix this problem permanently?

Is there a nuke from orbit, no finesse way of just ripping all the existing GRUB mess out and installing GRUB2 from Boot disk? for instance should I be just be able to boot with a LIVE CD mount the primary disk of this machine and enter the below in a terminal without messing up any further?

I was having problems performing an update yesterday that failed on dovecot dependancies and after a few tries I removed dovecote (it wasn't being used) from the installation and tried again. Everything seemed to be going OK then the update (about 160MB) hung and the screen went black a few times and I think then shutdown automatically. The PC then fails to reboot and displayes the message "Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)" I have tried to get the PC to boot with the super grub disc but without success (probably my in experience) I have also tried a suggestion from one of the forums to start the PC with a live CD and typed su -c 'grub-install /dev/sda at the terminal again without sucess. I have looked at the files with the live CD there are grub, menu and kernel files there (some are in lost + found, b ut don't know wheer these should be so have not changed anything.
Is there an easy way for the in-experienced to repair the boot process ?
The PC is a pentium 4 running Fedora 13
There is a 200MB boot partition formated as Ext3
and a 19GB partition formated as a LVM with Ext4
There is a CD drive but no DVD
Everything has worked OK for the past year through two online upgrades.
I created a separate /home partition after installing Karmic on a new computer using this HowTo :

I copied all the files from /home/user using
find . -depth -print0 | sudo cpio --null --sparse -pvd /new/
On booting after the change, the new /home is correctly on a separate partition BUT during boot I get a message :
Could not update ICEauthority file /home/user/.ICEauthority
I checked and the ownership and permissions for /home/user/.ICEauthority are correct. The suggested remedy of deleting the file & waiting for it to be recreated doesn't work either. But when I compare other hidden files in the new /home/user directory, quite a few now have their ownership changed to root. & I am unable to connect to my external monitor because of a permission problem (probably connected).
I was updating the kernel and left the computer to let it do its business. There was power failure and I don't know if the update completed or if it was in the middle of it. Now if I start the computer, it freezes up at the login screen. I tried to recover from grub, by selecting "Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-21-generic (recovery mode)". There were no prompts for input after this. The recovery screen is not updating anything after:

I'm having a problem installing Ubuntu Studio 9.10-alternate-amd64 onto my machine. This is the third attempt and I keep running into the same problem. Grub Boot Loader will only install to 16% when a screen pops up:

choosing the option "Install Grub boot loader on a hard disk" sends me back to the Grub install and once again at 16% the Ubuntu Installer Main Menu pops up. Choosing the option "Install the Lilo Boot Loader on a hard disk" resolves in an Lilo-install failure and i'm directed back to the Installer Main Menu. The option "Finish the installation" sends me back to the same menu..I'm stumped as to what to do... a disk check ensured me that the instal-dvd is valid though I can't get past this silly install menu.

I have 2 hard disks. sda,sdb
In sda, I have 4 partitions, and I have windows 7 in one of the extended partitions [not in the primary partition].
In sdb, I have 3 partitions. 2 for storage, and 1 10GB drive for Ubuntu. Again, Ubuntu is not of a primary partition.
I had ubuntu 10.04 running on that for a long time. However, I wanted to reinstall ubuntu and use 10.10.This is what I did EXACTLY:Booted from Ubuntu install CD

I have tried the testdisk/update-grub method, but it didn't work.
When doing a routine update to GRUB, it asked me what drive/partition I want it installed on. When I clicked enter to pass the OK message, the update manager froze momentarily and then it passed the selection page, saying "Warning: Installing GRUB to a partition other than the MBR is not recommended"
How can I fix this?

I have ubuntu 10.04 on a dual boot with win XP.And lucid has definately made me forget XP...
I regularly update ubuntu. Each time i update ubuntu and restart the machine there is a new entry added in the grub 2.Now its showing three entries of ubuntu!
For eg..now i have the grub showing
So each time i upgrade a new entry will be made and list larger..now how do i cope with this.Are those entries kept in case i want a roll back.
I had a bad experience with 9.04 - I installed some recommended system updates, and the updated GRUB killed my installation (which is WUBI), not letting me boot.
I've now installed 10.04, and some updates have come through, one of which is GRUB. So I'm now looking at the "Configuring grub-pc" dialogue box that's popped up, and there's an option to "Continue without installing GRUB?".
What are the risks here? Is my 10.04 WUBI system going to die if I upgrade GRUB again? Or is it going to die if I don't upgrade GRUB?
I have upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 but I'm still using Grub1 as I came from 9.04.
Anyway, during the upgrade I kept my original menu.lst file when prompted as I have a Windows XP boot option that I wanted to keep. I have read that this means your kernel won't be updated - and indeed mine wasn't.
The new kernel files (vmlinuz-2.6.32-23-generic) are on my machine in the /boot directory. uname -r currently shows 2.6.31-20-generic.
From what I've read you should just need to run update-grub manually and it will install. However, I have done this but it isn't upgraded. It doesn't modify my menu.lst or anything.

I am dual booting Windows Vista and Ubuntu 10.04 with WUBI. (Windows works fine). When I updated Ubuntu from the update manager, it just gives me this error code from a JPG attachment I just added with this post. It keeps on saying that every time ubuntu boots up.Is there a Fix? View 1 Replies View RelatedWhilst I've been using Ubuntu for years now, I don't really do much at the command-line, basically because I don't *have* to (which, to me is the beauty of this OS!). However, the last update via update manager has rendered my dual-boot with Vista on an Asus laptop non-functioning (at least Linux). What happens is this: after the BIOS splash screen, it says starting GRUB and then, instead of a menu of current and recent Linux versions and the Vista option at the bottom (white text against colour background) it now just shows one line of the menu in magenta... the rest of the menu is black, but the arrow keys will show the other options. Hitting ENTER does nothing: the text line is replaced with a blinking underline which goes back to the text in magenta again when i hit ESC. I can't seem to ESC or SHIFT to GRUB's command-line prompt at all. I've boot to the LiveCD and ran a boot_info_script in bash: here is what that revealed:

After upgrading Maverick (perfect!) to Natty, I was unable to boot into anything. (kernel 2.6.38). However, through much PITA, I was able to boot into an older kernel. (2.6.35). I completely removed 2.6.38, rebooted, reinstalled it and ran update-grub. However, 2.6.38 is no longer available no matter how many times I run update-grub, and the only option left is 2.6.35. In my humble opinion, the Natty upgrade experience is rubbish. (blank screen, total PC hangs, boots into a blank screen with only a blinking cursor, NVIDIA official driver not working, bootable only into older kernels etc.)

Still, I had a properly functioning system. I then decided to install selinux since I was interested in learning how to set it up and get familiar with it's security features. I have been phenomenally unlucky with Ubuntu as seen my my post history and decided to dual boot.
I set it all up with a clean install, when I tried to load Windows from Grub the computer restarted. After much headache I managed to set it up correctly (when it wouldn't load from Grub I booted from the Windows CD and clicked on "Repair computer" and it finally worked).
Now I am having the same problem as before--I think my installed all the updates from Update Manager and it included a grub one. Now I can't load Windows from the grub menu: It goes to the Starting Windows screen and then reboots my computer. If I do it again it gives me an error message and an option to perform "Startup repair". When I try to do Startup Repair, the computer reboots after a few loading screens.
So I tried what worked before and put in my Windows 7 CD, and clicked on Repair Computer. BUT NOW it gives me an error message somewhere along the lines of system restore is not compatible with my installation of Windows, and to insert a compatible recovery CD. This is the ONLY Windows CD I have (legitimate copy).
Over the course of this migration experiment I have installed and reinstalled both operating systems 7-10 times total. I'd rather not do it again. My poor laptop is probably wondering what the heck.
I can't stick with Ubuntu alone because my wireless doesn't work with it, my grad school files are not completely compatible with open source software, and I can't play the games I'd like to. So I must have the option to at least dual boot into Windows.
When selecting Windows it restarts the computer entirely to the Compaq screen, not just to the Grub menu, if that matters.
