Fedora Servers :: Apache Will Not Serve Beyond Local Network

Jan 6, 2009

I've tried, but now I give up. I'm trying to run Apache on FC9. Nothing fancy, no extras, just the default installed apache. [correction, I have coldfusion installed, however the service is not running] I've set the Listen variable to every combination I could think of, with no success. I can set it whatever I like (such as my local IP) on any port other than port 80. If I try to set it to 192.168.x.x:80, it gives me the error message:
Starting httpd: (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 192.168.x.x:80

I've run netstat commands to try and find applications listening on port 80 and found nothing. Whenever I chose a port other than 80 to get the service to start successfully, I am able to serve pages locally. But even with my ports forwarded correctly, no one outside the local network can see it. I've checked with nmap that my machine is opening the ports and even cheated, disabling the firewall during testing to ensure it was not part of the problem.

I noticed while locally nmaping my server that whenever I set Listen 192.168.x.x:8081, 8081 is opened, as well as normal port 80. When I stop the httpd service, both those ports are simultaneously closed. Why is httpd opening port 80? I'm assuming this is related to why I cannot assign Listen to port 80. If I run remote scans from sites like www.nmap-online.com and www.canyouseeme.org, nmap-online will report filtered on ports 80 and 8081 if my httpd is running, and if httpd stopped, 80 is closed, filtered 8081.

Can you seem reports success on ports 80 and 8081 if httpd is running, fail if httpd is stopped. I'm sure thats all a lot of information cluttered in to all that. To summarize, I cannot start my httpd server on port 80, and I cannot ever see my webpages beyond my local network. Am I missing something extremely is simple and I'm just over looking it?

Ubuntu Networking :: DWA-140 - Connects To Home Network But No Internet / Get That?

Jun 20, 2010

I recently installed Xubuntu 10.04 on my desktop computer that had a USB wireless adapter DLink DWA-140. I didn't have to install any additional drivers to get it to work. I put in the network SSID and the password and was connected immediately. However, when I try starting firefox it doesn't load any sites. Can anyone help me in approaching this problem. I have a DLink DIR-655 router. If I should gather more information to get this problem solved then please let me know and I will do so.
Edit: Now I am unable to connect to the network. When I click the network icon in the taskbar, my home network is not visible while it is visible under another ubuntu computer I'm running.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connects To Internet But Not To Home Network?

Aug 25, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit on an old desktop (1.5ghz Pentium 4, 20GB hard drive, 768MB RAM) a week or two ago, at the same time that I installed Xubuntu 10.04 on an even lower performance IBM tower server. The server functions perfectly and my other (Windows XP) desktop recognized it from the start, as did the Ubuntu desktop. However, I rearranged a few ethernet cables the other day without turning off the desktops and ever since my Ubuntu machine does not recognize my server, even though all of the devices are connected via ethernet cable to a linksys router and it connects to the internet without a problem. I'm a linux newbie - this is my first move away from Windows - and I don't know where to turn. Far more confusing is the fact that, when I boot from a LiveCD, the network is recognized and I can read/manipulate files on my server without a problem. Oh, and I briefly flirted with OpenSUSE KDE (not as noob-friendly as Ubuntu, so I'm back) and encountered the same problem.

Needless to say, booting from the hard drive is preferable to booting from CD every time

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Serve Files To A Remote IP Address?

Is there a way to accomplish the same thing, but have them on different networks? Can I tell the ps3 to search an external IP addres on port 2222 to look for a media server? If that won't work (I doubt it will), is there another way to do this? I am moving to Germany in 5 months for work and I Won't be able to bring my media server with me. I'm taking a bunch of stuff to my parent's to avoid rent and all....So I could just hook the server up to the router, set it to forward a port and have access to it.

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Printing - Serve As Printer Server Have An Error Message In Cups/error_log

Dec 28, 2010

I have been able (with some hair pulling and gnashing of teeth) to print from outside the LAN to the printer connected via USB to the desktop computer at home, until the last upgrade. The laptop will forst say the printer may not be connected, but eventually (usually) after a while says the job was sent to the printer. The log files on the desktop - serving as the printer server have an error message in cups/error_log that I am not familiar with, and don't believe I have seen before. I am sure if I could decipher that error and figure out how to change the behavior to get rid of it, it would once again work. Printing from within the LAN is a no-brainer as it has been for the last several releases. The error that I get when trying to print outside the LAN (via the internet) is:

cupsdAcceptClient: 12 from <WAN IP>:631 (IPv4) Unable to encrypt connection from <WAN IP> - GnuTLS internal error. I am missing something as far as authentication from the laptop to the desktop. how to fix it.

Ubuntu Servers :: From Filezilla FTP Server To Vsftpd - Configure?

Feb 21, 2011

I have used for a long time Filezilla FTP Server on a windows server, for multiple users in my company around the country.Lately the windows box died and I said let's try ubuntu server 9.10. I configured to my best as a Samba file server and from a speed point of view it works even faster than the Winbox. Now getting to FTP setup, I had the following problem when setting vsftpd. How can I enable more directories for the user, each with its own rights. By example, in Filezilla I had two folders for each user: one was a specific folder in which he could also write, and the other was read-only. They were setup with aliases, so that when user login, he sees one continous list of folders.I tried with symlink, but couldn't do it. Also I searched through the man page but also did not find something specific for this task I would appreciate any help you guys could give me in order to solve this issue, using the best practice for vsftpd. Also note that I am open to other FTP servers as well.

Is that all that needs to be done (aside from opening the port on my router/firewall)? Or, is there an automated way to set this up via Webmin?

Was less then 1MB a second. I tried setting up a shared folder but ran into several permission errors between the host PC and the laptop that that connected to the shared folder. which way to go with this to get what I want out of it. I know if can be done just not sure how to do it.

Fedora Servers :: Sendmail And Home Network Woes?

Feb 22, 2011

I have a rather interesting issue. I have set up a home network and a fedora 14 box as a server. I am running the version of Sendmail that came with fedora 14. I wrote a PHP script that changes http access passwords(to give authorized access to the outside by multiple users) once a week and emails the users their new passwords. It also finds out my WAN IP (because it is dynamic, and I am using a Linksys router with NAT), and E-Mails users when this has changed along with the new access password. I have Sendmail set up so that it should log on to my websites mail server (smtp.example.net) and send the email through it.

The problem I am having is that I have set up my home server with an internal domain like exampledomain.home, but the wan IP reverse lookup returns xx.xxx.xxx.xxx.static.xxx.xx.charter.com, so that when my sendmail server connects to my smtp server for my website it gives "EHLO server.exampledomain.home" then my smtp server rejects it because the connecting IP (WAN IP) resolves toxxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.static.opls.la.charter.com gives a host not found error. Or it gives the error because server.exampledomain.home is obviously not a valid host name on the internet. I was hoping someone out there had some insight on how I could get around this without editing or adding any DNS entries to my websites domain. I would also like to avoid getting a static IP for my house as it is more expensive. I thought about making a dynamic DNS entry with dyndns.com and then making Sendmail use that host name. I dont know how to trick sendmail like that though. Here is a copy of my sendmail.mc (scrubbed of course).
