I just switched over to ubuntu 10.04 LTS Netbook Edition from Windows XP and I am wondering how to setup a home network and share files with other computers in my house? I tried going to Preferences -> Personal File Sharing. But the options for 'Share Files over the Network' is grayed out. The message is "This feature cannot be enabled because the required packages are not installed on your system."

Lately I noticed that my Ubuntu gets ipv6 autoconfiguration from ISP router, receiving global ipv6 address and automatically adding ipv6 route. I can access Internet resources using ipv6 connection:
I can ping inet resources using my ipv6 global address and access, for example, ipv6.google.com or URL..
How can I share ipv6 connection to my home network? Using ipv4 it's easy, I just can use NAT for this. But if I understand correctly, in ipv6 there isn't such thing as NAT, because there is no limit in ip addresses.
I've used Samba for several years and when it works it's great. Unfortunately from time to time it seems to get messed up and either all the 7 machines on my home network can't be seen or I can't access the shares on some. I have 2 Windows XP computers 4 Kubuntu and one Linux Mint KDE, all the latest versions. I'd rather not plough through all the documentation for Samba, but would really like a "model" smb.conf with a few comments about parts that might have legitimate variants. I have researched this with Google searches many times but have failed to find the information I need in concise form.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy main pc is this Fedora 10 pc. I have two other pcs that run different Linux distros from time to time. What is the basic setup to share and transfer files between the 2 or 3 pcs? They are connected through a 2wire modem/router.
Do I need Samba installed? or is that only if to need to network with a Windows pc?
I have three PC's. PC-1 is a newish Dell Vostro 320 running Win 7 as the prime OS with Ubuntu Linux 10.10 dual boot under the control of EasyBCD. PC-2 is a Dell Inspiron 6400 running Ubuntu Linux (10.10). PC-3 is an oldish Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop dual booting Win 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. All three PC's share a DSL connection to our ISP and network using the wireless router capability of the DSL box (a Billion 7401 VGP-M). All three PC's can access the internet using the DSL box both wired and wirelessly under Windows or under Linux. PC-1 is the primary PC and runs Win 7.
PC-2 (Ubuntu 10.10) is running fantastically well and can access PC-1 running Win7 as a member of WORKGROUP for print sharing and for file sharing. The primary PC-1 can also see the files on PC-2 as a member of a Windows WORKGROUP. Simple home networking is working as it should with this setup (PC-1 under Win 7 and PC-2 under Ubuntu 10.10). This has been like this since the installation of Ubuntu on PC-2, which included setting up network printing from PC-1 (Win 7) under Samba.
The problem is thus: If I boot PC-1 or PC-3 up under Linux, I lose all networking capability between the three PC's including print and file sharing, but they can all access the internet through wireless or wired connection. I have configured Samba and done all the home networking troubleshooting especially:[URL]..All to no avail. As I said, my aim to ditch Windows and move all three PC's to Linux but I can't do this unless I can get Linux home networking working properly. By properly, I mean all PC's running Linux or two under Linux and one under Windows 7 and be able to share files and a printer attached to PC-1. I am a Linux virgin and am hoping that a knowledgeable person can tell me what's going wrong and point me to setting up a simple home network under Linux. It shouldn't be this hard.
I'm trying to set up a wireless or wired network (wireless would be better...) to share my connection with my housemate, as well as with some devices. The only guide I found regarding this (I must admit, I didn't have much time to put into research), was dating back to 2005, and although doable, seemed somewhat confusing. Getting to the point: is there a way (maybe a standalone program, or some kind of plugin) to share a connection?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to set up a firewall in my home network environment. the rest of the environment is windows, sorry I am attempting now so bear with me. what I have is a cable modem coming in, then my fedora 11 box with 2 nics, then the wireless router and the rest of the network.
everything works fine until I put the linux box in. If I put the firwall in the firewall sees the internet but the wireless router directly after does not. I am doing something wrong with the dhcp I am guessing. I dont want the firewall to give the address to the network I want the router to. I tried to get the firewall to do it (yum install dhcp leafnode) but it kept saying something didn't work right.
so I figure I will let the cable modem give the firewall an ip and the router give the rest of the network their ip's but how do I get the firewall and router to see each other and allow passthrough?

But every time I do, the share is not accessible because none of the important permissions (other) can be set because its, well, NTFS in linux. And I know of no way to fix it.Is there an easy way, preferably with Nautilus since the person I am setting this up for isn't a computer expert, to setup this share so thats its accessible and writable by other computers on the network?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to setup OpenVPN in order to connect back to my home network while traveling for secure browsing and such. However, before I can even start trying to set that up I tried to see if I could open port check my computer through the net. And I'm having a hard time doing that.
As far as I can tell, here are my roadblocks:
1. Is ISP (Qwest) blocking my ports?
2. Is my modem doing the proper port forwarding and firewall?
3. Is my router doing the same?
4. Is my firewall on the computer allowing the request?
To minimize sources of error, I've turned off my local and router firewall and setup my router to forward ports. I'm not to familiar with my modem, but I'm pretty sure that the firewall is turned off by default and I think I've done port-forwarding correctly. But still no success when doing an open port check. At this point I don't know how to diagnose the problem.
I would like to configure my system to do the following. Previous versions of ubuntu did some of this but now I cant seem to get this working.
1.Browse other Ubuntu systems on the local network by default. Avahi is install on my systems but they cant see each other.
2.From the GDM screen log into another PC. I had this set up in the past so from my laptop I could log into my server almost like terminal services. How do I set this up again?
3.Share files on the local network easily. How do share file with other pc on the network if I don�t want to use samba? What happen to NFS in Ubuntu?
I am trying to both access files shared by Windows machines on my network, and I also want to share files on my Fedora 15 box. In Nautilus, if I choose the 'Browse Network' option on the left toolbar, I am shown a Windows Network icon. If I try to double click this, I am given an "Unable to mount location" error. Does anyone know why this is and how to fix it? Further, where is the GNOME 3 option to right click and choose to share a folder? Both KDE 4.5/4.6 and older versions of GNOME (at least on Ubuntu) had this. Is there a way to share files this way, and if not, is there some workaround?
View 2 Replies View RelatedThere is a test/development environment here at work with some windows and some CentOS systems connecting over a network share to a CentOS fileserver in the data center. The developers run as root (i know i know, but the environment is completely cut off from the rest of the company and this just worked best) and connect to the fileserver using samba. I tried using nfs but to no avail. Now, a couple of the developers have no issues with permissions at all but a couple of them are not able to delete files or folders in their network share graphically. They can through terminal though.

I want to be able to access files on the network hard drive in the PC, stream video or music from the "server", and use the computer as a regular desktop connected to TV as a monitor. I tried setting up an FTP server and that worked for transferring files but failed to get a good connection for streaming or fast transfers.
Was less then 1MB a second. I tried setting up a shared folder but ran into several permission errors between the host PC and the laptop that that connected to the shared folder. which way to go with this to get what I want out of it. I know if can be done just not sure how to do it.
I have a Linksys router configured via Windows 7 and have to other PC's using Ubunto, and would like to share folders on the 2 Linux boxes with the Windows Laptop. I can see the windows network through the Linux machines but not vice-versa. Since i like Debian now a lot (in past days it was a very hard system to handle, but there has been some progress i noticed), i have to change some things (want Debian as main system now) For Ubuntu i have: (was meant to be main system on Notebook) "/", "/home" and a "swap" partition, but since i am now going to use mainly Debian, i wanted to store my files all in the "/home"-folder of my extended Ubuntu partition (has much more space available) not in the "/home" folder of the Debian system. So i want both (Debian and Ubuntu) to use the same extended partition ("/home") which i created for Ubuntu to save their files like downloads, videos, and so on.

i have 3 comps(running suse 11.3) and a laptop(running vista sp2). i have installed samba on all suse comps. i have a printer attached to one of the comps and it has been shared also the internet connection on that comp has been shared. all the computers are connected using lan cables through an ethernet switch. i also have a wireless router which is connected to the ethernet switch.
I am able to view all the comps on the network except the laptop running vista. all the desktops are visible on the network and are able to print and share files on the network and also connect to the internet. the laptop running vista can connect to the internet but its not visible on the network and nor can it share files across the network or access the printer.
It it possible to setup a bind server for my internal network at home? Currently, all clients DNS requests go to my Verizon FIOS router, which also acts as a DHCP server. I would like to setup a another DNS server using BIND for studing.
Current setup:
Client --> Router (DNS Server) --> Internet
New BIND server setup:
Client --> BIND Server (2nd DNS) --> Router (Primary DNS) --> Internet
How would I go ab this? Would I have to configure a cache naming DNS server?
I'm trying to setup a Samba network share with a Fedora Directory Server backend. This will be used primarily for Windows users to authenticate before accessing the share. I am using Fedora Core 10 and have all of the latest updates installed. When I try to connect from a Windows machine, I am prompted for a username and password. I enter the username and password of the account I created in Fedora Directory Server in OU=People. The credentials are rejected. At the same time in the log file I see this:

Administrator is the user I created in Fedora Directory Server. If I perform an ldapsearch it will find the user as uid: Administrator so I know it is able to be looked up in FDS. But I'm guessing that's not the problem.

2. User home directory should also be on the Same NIS server.
3. If possible to setup a single shared home directory for all users.
OpenSuse version 11.2 There are twelve workstations from which users will login using the NIS authentication. I have succeeded in setting up NI server. However login fails as the home directory is not accessible.
