View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm having a very strange problem with my ubuntu apache2 server running wordpress. i want do download media files (from within a flash-mp3-player onsite or by link [url]) but the file transfer just stops after a while. (at least sometimes) at random positions. after that i have to clear the browsers cache and try again.
It is really annoying, though it is my band's website and we want to share our songs with our friends. i checked from several clients, seems to happen everywhere (linux, mac or windows clients)

I turned my home PC running Ubuntu 10.04 into a server, and so i am so lost, after reading like a 10-20 different guides and/or official docs, I am totally lost.
All I wanted was to create a custom 404 error page...i read about how people edited .htaccess files to customize error pages, i tried and failed also, editing apache2.conf, I got lost and i dont wanna mess up everything and also, how you're supposed to not touch either of those as its not how it should be done and instead you need to edit httpd.conf and i did and FAILED! again...
Also how do I make it so that I can make subdomain(s) on my site? and wth is a name server and where do I get one?
I'm looking to setup a home server for the purpose of backing up and storing the files on our multiple (Windows) computers. What kind of server should I set up? Samba? Lamp?

Then when I copied it back it's set to the home folder. Even changing it back in gconf-editor does nothing. how to get it back to normal. I hate having my home folder as the desktop.

Since i like Debian now a lot (in past days it was a very hard system to handle, but there has been some progress i noticed), i have to change some things (want Debian as main system now) For Ubuntu i have: (was meant to be main system on Notebook) "/", "/home" and a "swap" partition, but since i am now going to use mainly Debian, i wanted to store my files all in the "/home"-folder of my extended Ubuntu partition (has much more space available) not in the "/home" folder of the Debian system. So i want both (Debian and Ubuntu) to use the same extended partition ("/home") which i created for Ubuntu to save their files like downloads, videos, and so on.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to fix nautilus which is crashing, so deleted the ~/Desktop folder, thinking it would reset as in karmicnot in lucid. Now have home folder as the desktop. Tried recreating ~/Desktop, but no luck. Gconf-editor no luck either since checking or unchecking the home folder as destop does nothing. Any ideas how to fix this problem?

For some unknown reason, the desktop shortcut on PCManFM is pointing to my home folder, so I have all my personal files covering my Desktop (kind of annoying to be honest ). And when I try to add a shortcut to the Desktop it adds it to my home folder instead. Seems like there's some kind of hard link between the Desktop shortcut in PCManFM menu and my home folder. However, I can't find where it is or how to fix this. Has anyone else had this problem? How do I fix this?
View 9 Replies View RelatedToday I uninstalled Zimbra desktop from my Ubuntu 10.04. After doing it, I am facing several problems due to changes in system configuration.
My Home Folder contents are shown on Desktop and if I delete them from Desktop, they are also deleted from the Home Folder. I don't understand why this is happening.
Also, from the side pane in Explorer, the option of Home Folder is not present any more. When ever I go to Home Folder, on the side pane is shows that I am on desktop and the location bar shows that I am in Home Folder.
I recently changed linux distros and switched to Karmic. In my earlier setup /home was on a separate partition.
After switching to karmic I added the following line to /etc/fstab to mount my /home partition which was on /dev/sda6 (ubuntu is on /dev/sda7) /dev/sda6 /home ext3 nodev,nosuid 0 2
After rebooting I saw that while earlier I had an empty desktop now my desktop shows the content of my home folder.
On googling I found out about how I could change the nautilus preferences.
I used gconf-editor to change: apps>nautlius>preferences>desktop_is_home_dir to false
I also changed: apps>nautlius>desktop>volumes_visible to false.
However on rebooting I still see all the contents of my home folder on the desktop.
What do I need to do to show the Desktop as blank (as in point to ~/Desktop rather than point to ~)?
Suddenly, my "Places --> Desktop" folder is identical to my "Places --> Home Folder". This happened by accident somehow, and the folders and files in my Home Folder "/home/rj" are displayed on my desktop, and I don't want them to be.
When I click on "Places --> Desktop" it's as if I've clicked on "Places --> Home Folder" (the "File Browser" directory opens, the location is set at "/home/rj", and the title at the top is "File Browser").
Elementary stuff for a lot of you, I'm sure, but I'm blanking on how the Desktop folder can be restored to what I'd like it to be (basically empty, except for a "Downloads" folder), and my folders and files kept off the actual desktop (except for the "Downloads" folder).

long ago when i upgraded from jaunty to lucid, everything was fine when suddenly one day i found my desktop flooded with my home folder contents. i was trying a lot of juglery but no result. finally i went to gconf-editor and unchecked the show desktop menu on apps > nautilus > preferences.recently i upgraded from lucid to maverick. felt the problem will b resolved but it is still such.

I don't know what just happened, but all my photos are gone, as are just about all the other files in my home directory. The file structures are there (all the folders and subfolders under /home/matt/pictures), but there are no files in any of them.
Scattered around the home folder, there are folders that still have stuff in them, but lots are empty. Pictures are by far the most precious thing gone.
I was playing around in a Virtualbox install of PC Linux and trying to get my home folder to display there. Did I do something bad? (I was granting read/write).
Nothing in trash. I have a backup that is fairly recent, but I'm afraid I might lose some precious stuff.

It was showing that disk is having health problems. If I boot from live cd then i cant access the home folder. When I tried to mount the home folder, it says "Reading directory: input/output error"

View 2 Replies View RelatedI got ssh passwordless login to work. If /var/www permissions are set to 750 it works, but when trying to access the server from a browser it shows permission denied. When I set /var/www to 777, users can access the files through a browser but then ssh passwordless login doesn't work. Anyway around this, so both will work?
