Ubuntu Servers :: Guide In Which Hardware Components Are Mentioned?

Jan 11, 2010

So I was wondering if being relatively new to Ubuntu, and having no experience at all with servers, I would be able to set up a server (one server and a couple of computers), to use in a hostel. I took a good look at the Ubuntu Documentation Section:URl..and most of the things I don't even know what they are for (MySQU, Samba, Apache2).

Basically I need to have a couple of computers with internet access, allowing me to control their use, file sharing to a main HD in the server, also I would like to use the server computer as my personal desktop (office, internet, etc.) and that's about it..The question is, if I were to follow that guide, do you think I can set it up?Also, do you know a guide in which the hardware components are mentioned? Because I googled and the amount of trash coming out, mostly outdated, is extremely annoying.

Ubuntu Servers :: Create A Detailed Guide For A Postfix Server Running On At&t Internet?

Apr 18, 2011

I currently have a personal use server setup in my home and would like to be able to send emails from my domain name.

At&t blocks the standard ports used so some form of forwarding would have to be used. I've looked at other guides and followed them to the key but it appears I'm always missing something.

So my question here is could anyone write a detailed guide from start to finish on how to install a postfix server behind an at&t connection complete with MX record and firewall configuration information?

Fedora Servers :: Good Guide To Enabling Https On Apache2?

Dec 28, 2009

I've got a basic apache2 setup running w/ multiple virtual hosts, would like to try SSL (i.e. https).

I've got the IP networking side well and truly sorted but I need guidance on the apache/ssl config side. I have installed mod_ssl.

Does anyone have a good guide for Fedora that's recent? All I can find are ubuntu and old fedora 'core' guides, so not sure how much applies to F12. The best ones I can find so far is

Ubuntu Servers :: Cannot Setup LDAP Via Server Guide / Hangs When Issuing 'ldapmodify' Command

Oct 4, 2010

I have been trying to set up an LDAP server for a development environment as part of an internship for a week now, and I cannot get past this point. I have been following the 10.04 server guide to set up LDAP here: URL...Once I get to the following point in the guide, it just hangs:"As an example of modifying the cn=config tree, add another attribute to the index list using ldapmodify:"I've been working on this for a week and can't understand why this won't work. I am fairly certain that I've followed the guide to a 'T.'Any idea why am I receiving a permission denied error? Is this a permissions issue with one of the config files?

Ubuntu Servers :: Webdav Access - When Connect From Nautilus - Says - Access Was Denied

Mar 26, 2010

I'm having a problem with my webdav share. I have a secure webdav folder that gets accessed via a non-standard port and requires basic authentication. I can connect and interact with it fine via cadaver. However, when I try to connect from nautilus, it says "Access was denied." To make it even stranger, sometimes I can click on the folder in nautilus (it still mounts) and access it. Sometimes not (just repeats the error message and won't show me the contents). I may not even un-mount it, but just look at other folder, then click it again and be able to access it, but again - only rarely.

I asked a friend to try connecting from his windows vista computer and it would not work. It would not work from my windows XP virtual computer either. However, it mounts and works just find from my work computer (also Windows XP).

So it seems to be a 50/50 chance that the drive will mount on any given computer/system and work. Do anyone know what the problem may be? I'm guessing user permissions, but I can't figure out what.

I've made sure the webdav folder is owned by www-data and www-data has read access to the password file as well.

When I try connecting from nautilus, I get this in the log file:

Code:

Here is one of the (many) sites I've tried looking at: [url]

This would include information like:

Navigating the file system.
Editing text document.
Installing drivers.
Mounting data sources.
Installing and configuring packages.
and eventually installing a desktop environment.

Ubuntu :: Guide To Guest Session On Login Screen

Oct 20, 2010

I learned how to do this on the 'net somewhere. This HowTo will help you create an account on the login screen that will log in the same guest-session seen in the user menu. The advantage of this is that it will be an easily accessible guest account, while not preserving any files or changes on logout, and a higher security model for the account. Confirmed to work on 10.04 - 10.10, but the directions are for 10.10

1. Under an existing administrator account, go to the menu entry System --> administration --> Users and Groups.

2. Click Add. you may need to provide a password at this point. Name your new user anything you would like, except guest. The account cannot be called guest, but visitor does nicely. encryption of the account is not needed. This account will be a "booster" account to guest-session.

3. On the next screen, enter a password, and make sure that you click the check box "Don't ask for password on login", Click OK to finish.

4. As an extra precaution, click Advanced settings, when back on the Users and Groups screen, and on the User Privileges tab, uncheck Monitor System Logs.

5. Exit the Users and groups menu, and then log out and into your new account.

6. Once there, make a folder called GuestManager, and in that folder, make a plain text file called Guestmanager.sh, with this code in it :

Code:
#!/bin/bash
# Launches the guest session
/usr/share/gdm/guest-session/guest-session-launch
# Logs the user when done
/usr/bin/gnome-session-save --logout

7. Save that and then right click on it, go to properties, and then go to the permissions tab. On this tab, click "allow executing file as program", and then close that window.

8. Open the menu entry System --> Preferences --> Startup Applications, and once there, turn off all the startup applications, and then click add. Fill in the name and comment as GustManager, and for the command, enter /home/visitor/GuestManager/GuestManager.sh, where visitor would be the name you picked for the account in step 2. click add, then close

9. Delete all applets and extra toolbars (might want to leave the main gnome menu), and set the background to black or something else bland, and log out. Since this account is just a "booster" none of these toolbars and such will be needed, so removing them saves memory and load time.

Ubuntu Installation :: Zotac Zbox ION Install Guide?

Feb 6, 2011

I had the bug for a Boxee system. After looking at a bunch of different small HTPC options, I settled on the Zotac ZBOXHD-ND22-U system. Highlights of the box: Dual-core 1.2 Ghz CULV CPU ION chipset, handles up to 8GB of DDR3 (PC3-8500) 2.5" SATA bay
6xUSB2 ports, front SD slot HDMI port, supporting up to 7.1 audio

After a good bit of research, I opted to install Maverick instead of Lucid, since Maverick includes the required ALSA 1.0.23 release. This isn't an utterly complete cookbook. I'm doing this from memory... Here's what I did, roughly in order:

1. Install Maverick via a USB stick (built with Unetbootin). I selected Maverick x86, so I wouldn't have to muck around with the whole 32-bit flash on amd64 business, particularly in an embedded environment.

2. Removed gdm - we'll be booting directly into Boxee here. aptitude remove gdm, also let it remove the dependencies. Later, I went back and removed extraneous packages, like all of the gnome desktop stuff. Seemed fairly pointless to keep it around.
