Ubuntu Servers :: Create A Detailed Guide For A Postfix Server Running On At&t Internet?
Apr 18, 2011
I currently have a personal use server setup in my home and would like to be able to send emails from my domain name.
At&t blocks the standard ports used so some form of forwarding would have to be used. I've looked at other guides and followed them to the key but it appears I'm always missing something.
So my question here is could anyone write a detailed guide from start to finish on how to install a postfix server behind an at&t connection complete with MX record and firewall configuration information?

I need to set up a named server for a class room with 10 imaginary hosts the sub domain managed by this name server is s123456.eca.edu.au where 123456 is to be replaced by your student id. The named server will forward unresolved queries to the dns server. It will be on Ubuntu.

I recently moved over user from an old box running postfix(v 2.0.16) over to rhel 6 running postfix (v mail_version = 2.6.6). ive tried to make sure all the files are of correct permissions and that the main.cf file is configured corectly. However there is something wrong as when i run postfix: service postfix server i get no error but when checking the status:service postfix status i get: master dead but pid file exists Looking into /var/log/mailog i find this line being the issue:
Feb 25 16:24:39 puny1 postfix/master[3517]: fatal: fifo_listen: create fifo public/pickup: Permission denied
I gather this is a file permission issue and ive tried to make sure the public folder in /var/spool/postfix is correctly set but still no avail.

EDIT: Change the topic, see post #3
I've been following this guide: http://flurdy.com/docs/postfix/
And done the points up to "Advanced mail server" and are trying to test mailing mail@mydomain.com to mail@mydomain.com (yes, the same inbox) using Thunderbird, through my own DNS, from the server.
But I get the following error: The message can not be sent because the connection to SMTP server mydomain.com timed out.
And when I check /var/spool/mail/virtual where the mailboxes are supposed to be stored there are none.
So I'm wondering how I create a mailbox with postfix.
I can add that I am quite a noob at linux but have to do this in a school project.
I'm using ubuntu server 10.04 32bit with GUI (yes I know, I know)

I have been trying to set up an LDAP server for a development environment as part of an internship for a week now, and I cannot get past this point. I have been following the 10.04 server guide to set up LDAP here: URL...Once I get to the following point in the guide, it just hangs:"As an example of modifying the cn=config tree, add another attribute to the index list using ldapmodify:"I've been working on this for a week and can't understand why this won't work. I am fairly certain that I've followed the guide to a 'T.'Any idea why am I receiving a permission denied error? Is this a permissions issue with one of the config files?

make install then i got this error: postfix: fatal: chdir(/usr/libexec/postfix): No such file or directory make: *** [install] Error 1 I don't understand why it's checking the usr/libexec folder for the daemons although I've set the folder to /opt/product/postfix-2.6.5/libexec in the makefile. I have /var on it's own partition. Should i direct mail, in /etc/alises, sent to root to my normal local user or will /var end up getting filled up with mail, if i do that? Also:I went on the forums for dynDNS.com, explaining that i was setting up a network that includes a web server and a mail server. They rightly pointed out that i only needed to set up a DNS A record for webserver.dyndns.org. The mail server would be located by this DNS A record, as both machines share the same external I.P address(the external I.P of my ADSL router). So my mail addresses could be me@webserver.dyndns.org. So both machines would be reachable with the same DNS A record, and port-forwarding on my ADSL router would determine which host got which requests. That's what they said i should do for my scenario.
Bearing this in mind what should the values of $myhostname, $mydomain, $mydestination and $myorigin be?
My current thoughts, on the simplest way to do this, are:If $myhostname is mailserver.webserver.dyndns.org, then $myorigin can be webserver.dyndns.org, then $mydomain is webserver.dyndns.org and $mydestination has it's DEFAULT setting(mydestination = $myhostname localhost.$mydomain localhost). This the simplest workable approach right?, if not what are the best values for these parameters?.Also I have /var on it's own partition. Should i direct mail, in /etc/alises, sent to root to my normal local user or will /var end up getting filled up with mail, if i do that?

I've run into a strange problem on one of the servers I maintain. It's running CentOS 5, fully up to date. The server has Monit installed via RPMforge, and runs Postfix as its MTA. Every day at about 4:20am, when cron is running, Monit loses its connection to Postfix. As far as I can tell, nothing is actually going wrong with Postfix and it's always restarted just fine. I run a couple of Debian servers with very similar setups, and the problem does not occur on them.
Perhaps related, other daemons on the CentOS box often lose their pid files at the time when cron runs, which results in Monit thinking they're not running. One service in particular (zarafa-dagent) is so bad for this that I've had to completely disable monitoring of it in Monit. Again, this problem doesn't occur on the Debian boxes I maintain. The problem isn't hugely urgent as everything still runs fine, but it does mean that pretty much every day I get false positive mail alerts from Monit, which is (a) annoying and (b) makes me more likely to miss a real alert.

I've set up both Postfix and Dovecot on my server. I can currently send mail via Outlook to Postfix over Port 587 (rather than Port 25), and receive mail from Dovecot on Outlook. However, the only mails I am able to receive are those originated from within the server itself. If I attempt to send an e-mail to the address my Outlook listens to, the mail will never reach my Outlook. In other words, no one on the Internet is able to send mail to me.
Can someone tell me:
1) If setting Postfix to listen over Port 587 for my Outlook to send mail outwards is preventing me to have Postfix to listen to mails coming from the Internet? Would I have to turn on both Ports 25 and 587 in /etc/postfix/master.cf?
2) I have configured my Postfix to use saslauthd by authenticating those who are on /etc/passwd. This means I can enter my Linux account details into Outlook in order to connect and download messages. However, does this mean other MTA servers on the Internet who doesn't know my account details are unable to authenticate with my Postfix server and send mails to it?

I have SSH running on a computer I use as a server at home and login to it for my own purposes but am needing to share access to this server with someone else, and I'd like to do it in a way so that when they sign in all they see is the contents of one folder and nothing outside of it. So I'd like them to have full access to this folder and do anything they want with it, but not be able to browse outside of it at all via something like WinSCP (they're using Windows). I'm thinking I need to create a new account for them to sign in with but beyond that I'm not sure what I need to do. The only other special thing is that the folder I'd like them to be presented with is actually on an external hard drive. We're going to be doing a lot of online music collaboration and I need to give him lots of free space to drop files and the internal hard drive doesn't have a lot to spare right now.

venturing into unfamiliar territory so I'm hoping someone can help me and make things a little more understandable for me. I have setup Postfix on a standalone server connected directly to the internet. I have got inbound and outbound email working for the most part, but I am worried about security. My fear is that if I leave port 25 open to the outside world spammers will find this and start relaying mail through it and eventually blacklisting the IP attached to this box.
For now, I am hosting mail for a single domain and single user (me) with a few aliases. I plan on expanding to IMAP and SMTP access from the outside at some point, but for now I've been using Mutt in a shell and it's fine for my needs for now.
Here are my current Postfix settings:
alias_database = hash:/etc/aliases
alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases

So I was wondering if being relatively new to Ubuntu, and having no experience at all with servers, I would be able to set up a server (one server and a couple of computers), to use in a hostel. I took a good look at the Ubuntu Documentation Section:URl..and most of the things I don't even know what they are for (MySQU, Samba, Apache2).
Basically I need to have a couple of computers with internet access, allowing me to control their use, file sharing to a main HD in the server, also I would like to use the server computer as my personal desktop (office, internet, etc.) and that's about it..The question is, if I were to follow that guide, do you think I can set it up?Also, do you know a guide in which the hardware components are mentioned? Because I googled and the amount of trash coming out, mostly outdated, is extremely annoying.

We are planning on rolling out a mail service that will backend a webmail/groupware interface using postfix and dovecot, and we are trying to nail down an architecture for the system. I was hoping I could get some opinions from you good people on the different models we have come up with, and any improvements. To preface this discussion, we use NFS as the backend storage for mail so that clusters of mail servers can be created.
One possible solution is to separate three services, inbound email, outbound email, and message retrieval onto separate servers. We currently run a mail system with 65K users in this manner and it works, but there is a lot of wasted cpu on the inbound and outbound mail servers. where the dovecot servers are doing most of the work.
Another solution would be to combine the dovecot and inbound postfix servers to run dovecot as the local transport agent for postfix with LMTP, giving us quota and sieve capability.
The last solution is to run all three services on the same machine, giving us a single server image that we can clone on demand when we need to add more performance.
The single server, all three services, solution seems to be the simplest to build and manage, but putting all your eggs in one basket like that concerns us. What if there is a sudden influx of mail from our filtering platform, and it slows down all the other processes? What if the NFS server becomes disconnected from the network and the load average on each server skyrockets killing the ability for outbound mail to flow (where a separate outbound mail server would continue running despite this issue)?

I've been looking for a way to filter out emails on my postfix server by GeoIP data. I couldn't find anything that fitted the bill so wrote my own in Python as a postfix policy. Thought I'd post it here to see if it's of any use to anyone else. I've attached a tar of the files as the Python formatting will get mucked up by the forum code. Comments/improvements are welcome (be kind ) First file is : policyd-geoip which is owned by root:root and placed in /usr/bin with 755 perms

I got a request today from someone on the software development team that reads as follows: Quote: According to RFC 4409 client mail submission to an email server is supposed to use port 587. Server to server SMTP relays are to use port 25. When I am not on site, I can't email via my work account via my iPhone or my residential internet because my ISP(s) filter port 25 to only allow traffic to and from their mail servers. They do however allow 587 anywhere per RFC 4409. Just to send this email I am having to relay off my own server in California. get the proper ports opened on the mail server? [URL] So my question now is I'm wondering if my Postfix server isn't properly configured? Right now it's listening on the following ports:
