i need to shred (or at least do a low/high level format) the drives before giving them to my parents (because they know about undelete and stuff). so, what apps can i use in ubuntu to do this?
View 4 RepliesI'm running 10.10, but this seems to be an ongoing problem. While every other OS on the planet seems to be able to high level format LS-120 super floppies in their IDE drive, Linux can't. DR DOS can. OS/2 can. Windows 98 forward can.
We aren't talking low level format here. We are talking "quick" format where a new FAT and label are written to the media along with the high level markings/surface scan.
I can load a disk, copy to it, delete from it, but cannot perform a high level format.
Running Suse 10.0 on a lenovo idea pad and I am having a problem getting the volume set high enough to hear any music, dialogue!. I have set the volume control up as far as it will go but can hardly hear anything. Had this problem running Ubuntu on a Sony laptop but managed to resolve the problem but cannot remember what I done.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm sick of screwing around trying to script a clean solution to burn multiple files and folders to CDs and DVDs with wodim, growisofs and genisoimage.I'm looking for a high level command line program that uses sensible defaults and takes arguments something like this:[program-name] [cd|dvd] /path/to/dir1/ /path/to/dir2/ /path/to/file ...It should then do all the low level copying and ISO generation transparently and just burn the damn disk!Does anyone have any suggestions? When you do 'man bash', you'll see some words are highlighted. I'll say that the video card has used high intesity in these instances. How do I disable this video card capability? Can this only be done by recompiling the kernel? Of course, I am talking about the text consoles, i.e., the video card in text mode.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a nice computer i have been dual booting between either ubuntu or win7. i am wanting to remove win7 and install winxp sp3, so i can use media center with my xbox. i preferred that win7 work, but since my copy is not genuine, its authenticity is believed to be the culprit in connection errors with the xbox. i have not been able to find a linux alternative, which i doubt even exists due to the proprietary nature of the xbox.
So, my question is how do i reformat the win7 hard drive? are there issues i need to worry about that may reformat both hard drives on accident? and when the hard drive is formatted, will i be prompted to choose which hard drive to install win xp on?
I am trying to install windows 7 over Ubuntu, however when i run the install disk it tells me that my hard drive is not formatted in the correct format. I have then loaded up Ubuntu, tried to re-format using Gparted and it won't let me re-format my hard drive when I right click on it. The only option I get when right-clicking is to unmount the drive.

Tried a couple other OSs that were just, frankly, garbage. But, not Ubuntu! So far, I haven't had any of the issues I've seen posted here. I decided to use my worst system as a test environment - an old Jetta Jetbook 9450. Loaded up with no problems, most noted none of the "searching for drivers" issue that I ran into with other OSs! All that being said, I do have one question - how do I get the laptop to join my network so that I can view my shared drives? In Windows, it's simply change WORKGROUP to my network name. Been flipping through the options, and I'm sure I may have overlooked it.

When I click on "Network / Windows Network" I have the message: "unable to mount location failed to retrieve list from server". Couple of remarks: This is a regression It's not only a "Windows" network - this label has to be renamed. View 9 Replies View RelatedI had a box running 9.04 that I upgraded to 9.10 and I cannot print or browse to shared drives from my iMac. I have several other Macs and PCs that work fine. This was the first that I setup to print on 9.04. I have attempted everything that I can find including installing in CUPS, using the ip address, etc. I can browse to workgroup and I see the computer but when I try to use either USERID guest or userid/passwd - I get no response.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from SuSE 11.3 to 11.4. For some reason, I can no longer access my shared drive from any other home computer. I can get out to the internet. I can ping other PCs on the network. Other PCs can ping me. My router sees all computers, and has assigned IP addresses dynamically. I have a shared folder, exported as an NFS mount point, that used to work! I've tried setting up Samba shares. Nothing! I disabled the local firewall, as my router already has a firewall running. Nothing! Nothing I've tried seems to work. I can not see that NFS mount point from any of my windows PCs. (I only have the one Linux server running, so I can't say whether another Linux box would see it or not!)

The server will have another drive for booting. What is the best way to get these mirrored drives into ext format while preserving my data? I plan to use software raid in Ubuntu as well. My only idea is to format a 3rd drive as ext and copy all the files over, seems inefficient though.

Now for the problem, when I have both the 1TB drives in I can not format or mount either 1TB drives. Says Device is in use or "The device file '/dev/sdc1' does not exist"
Now if I take one of the 1TB drives out I can format, partition, and mount it no problem...it only seems to be a problem when both drives are connected...

I am trying to recover some data on some drives that are in the same LVM. When I upgraded the motherboard, I had complications getting the drives to all load under the LVM, and in the process I made the mistake of formatting one of the drives. The problem now is that the UUID changed on the drive so when I try to mount the LVM it can't find device with a certain UUID. When I try to set the UUID back to the old one it says 'Invalid UUID format'.
I can set it to a UUID generated through 'uuidgen', si I then noticed that the format of that UUID is different than the old one which I'm trying to set it to. Why is that? Is there a way I can get it to change to the old one in the different format?

I have a D-Link DNS-323 network drive which mounts at multiple points to my filesystem when booting. I had to make some fstab changes when I upgraded from 11.2->11.3 last year, and now the same thing seems to be happening since I've upgraded to 11.4. When I login to my profile the desktop hangs and no icons appear. I cannot open a Nautilus window, or access ALT-F2, however just about every other program works fine. Since I disabled the fstab lines (slightly modified when copied here to generalize):

I mount the shared drives (on a Windows Server 2003) and I can access them from my home directory. Everything is mostly fine. But I also get desktop icons for the shared drives, which I don't like since I prefer a bare desktop. Sometimes I have deleted desktop icons from /usr/share/dist/... but these are not there.

No matter what I call this file or where I put it, any USB device still mounts RW. How do I fix this? Am I correct that HAL is the right place? Looking through dmesg, it sure looks like HAL controls this, but maybe I'm wrong? I've also made various attempts to solve this with UDEV and /etc/auto.misc, so if it is one of those, I clearly don't know the correct thing to do there.

For example, an application is being run as "app_account". Because there will be multiple people administering this application and the password is shared for this "app_account", I want to disable 1st level login for it. I want to make it such that only the permitted people can "su - app_account", once they have logged into their personal account. How can I do this? If I set app_account's shell to /sbin/nologin, the users are also not allowed to do "su - app_account".
