2. how to find Disk information...I mean if it's not possible to get RAID Can I get how many hard drives and the real size?
How can I mirror drives on the hardware level? I have a Sun X2270 server with 4 1 terabyte hard drives and need to mirror two drives.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo windows wouldn't recognize my drives as a raid setup, so I disabled it and switched to IDE, now Ubuntu 9.10 installation will only recognize my drives as RAID. I have and ASUS M3A32-MVP Deluxe Series motherboard, it has 4 sata connectors and 2 marvel controlled sata connectors. In the 4 sata connectors I have my 2 wd 500gb hds, my dvd burner, and my external usb, esata slots. In the marvel controlled sata connector I have a wd 160gb hd. Originally when I built the computer I wanted a raid setup with the 2 500 gb hds.
But windows wouldn't recognize the raid set-up and wouldn't boot properly. So I said screw it and removed the raid and set all the drives to IDE. Then, when I tried to install Ubuntu 9.04 it would only recognize my 2 500 gb hds as raid. Gparted recognizes the drives as both raid and IDE. Eventually, after a day or two of praying and messing around the installer recognized both drives as raid and IDE. A couple months later here I am trying to install Ultimate Edition 1.4.
getting freespire to recognize my 2nd hard drive and allow me to use it for things I want to save there and such. I also cannot get CNR to come up in my browser and need some information as to how to install programs.how to find installable programs,and install them.

Among the things I have installed, I have a 1tb ext4 hdd and a 320gb ntfs hdd.Due to my ignorance, right now, I can't boot, but that's not the point of the question. Let me try to explain the situation:Right now, the 1tb hdd has Ubuntu installed. And the 320gb hdd is just a drive for stashing stuff. (It used to be the "large" drive).
But what I want to do now is:Copy all the contents of the 320gb to the 1tbFormat the 320gb as ext4 and install Ubuntu there so it is the "main" driveRe-format the 1tb as ext4 too to use it as the storage areaBut, when I try to copy the stuff from 320 to 1tb, I can't due to permission issues (I'm booting the box from the live CD).So I sudo and the files are copied.Now, when I try to verify (still booted from the LiveCD as the box itself doesn't boot yet) I'm told that I can't see the contents of the directories I just copied.So the question is when I finally copy all the stuff I want to the 1tb, and install Ubuntu, will I be able to read the contents of those directories? I mean, not as root but as my regular user, or conversely, just doing a chown -R myuser:myuser <directory> would allow me to use the files normally?

One of the drives is full of data so I will need to start with a 3 disks and then once I copy the data from the 4th onto the array, I will then add the 4th drive. This will be my first experience with RAID. I've spent a few hours searching for info but most of what I have found is a bit over my head.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am currently trying to configure a set of hard drives as a RAID configuration. My system is running with Red Hat Enterprise Linux Client release 5.1 as the base OS. I am booting from CD. I am trying to image a set of drives that have not been imaged before. When the GUI dialog window for disk setup is displayed, it shows a default disk layout including a LVM slice. In the disk layout is a /boot partition already. It is not what I would like so I edit it to be the size for my system and make it the primary partition. I also select it to be a software RAID. I then add three more partitions for my drive 'A' all of type software RAID and NOT primary partitions.
At this point my drives have the correct number of partitions except for showing the LVM slice. I select 'RAID' again, followed by selecting 'Clone a drive to create a RAID device ...' followed by 'OK'. I then get a dialog to select the source and target. i select my drive 'A' to be the source and 'B' to be the target followed by 'OK'. An error dialog is received stating that all the partitions are not of type software RAID. The disk partitions are all type software RAID except the extended LVM slice. I can not get past this point and I am following a procedure written some time ago by a person that is not available.
I have the newest Ubuntu installed on my machine. It currently has a 160GB sata drive. I just bought two shiny new 2TB drives that I want to RAID as 4TB. How do I go about adding these two hard drives even though install is complete? I want the 4TB assigned to my /home directory.

I set these up by using the RAID button on the partition section of the install except swap, which I set-up using the New partition button, created 1 swap partition on each hard drive that didn't take part in RAID. Almost every time I tried to do this install, it halted due to an error with one of the raid partitions and exited the installer. I actually managed it once, in about...ooo 10-15 times of trying but I broke it. After getting very frustrated I decided to build it using just 3 partitions

I left the rest un-touched. This worked fine after completing the install and setting up grub, reboot in to the install. I then installed gparted and cut the drive up further to finish my table on both hard drives. I then used mdadm --create...etc to create my RAID partitions. So I now have

View 1 Replies View RelatedEarlier I had two physical hard drives in my computer, one with Windows and one with Ubuntu. Now I have a new computer and have installed these hard drives in it. I run Windows 7, and I can find the Windows disk, but not the Ubuntu disk. This doesn't surprise me, as Ubuntu is another filesystem, however, earlier I could format it with a partition manager, but now I didn't even find it with that!

View 5 Replies View RelatedThe Fedora installer won't display my two SATA hard drives. I've tried both the x86_64 live CD and DVD. On the live CD, fdisk -l displayed nothing. However, if I click "Specialized Storage Devices" a devices shows up as "BIOS RAID set (stripe)" with a capacity equal to both my hard drives. I don't even have RAID enabled in BIOS - it is set to AHCI. Other os installers display the hard drive correctly.

I recently installed Fedora 11 x86_64 (dual boot with XP) and am having difficulty finding two of my three hard drives to mount them. This is my setup: 80 GB Hard drive (boot drive) with two partitions, one for XP (NTFS) and one for F11 (ext4). 2x250 GB Hard drives, one is formatted with NTFS, the other one has yet to be formatted (my plan is to use ext4).
All of my drives are SATA, on the same nVidia controller. After the install, I can see only the 80 GB hard drive (both partitions). What do I need to do to find the other two drives? During the install, it called the partitions /dev/sda0, sda1, sda2 and sda3, but I no longer see these drives. If I knew where the drives were I could mount them, but my systems just isn't seeing the drives.

I had installed windows XP and then Ubuntu a few months ago. I was mostly using Ubuntu only. My Ubuntu is up to date. Windows XP got the blue screen and i had to re-install it. So, i used the Disk Utility and formatted my C-drive as NTFS with a boot flag.
After that, when i attempted to install windows XP on my C-Drive that i just formatted, Windows Setup is unable to recognize any drives! I really don`t want to uninstall Ubuntu or format my whole HDD, just to install windows XP. But i also want to install windows XP as i have to run some applications in it!.
I'm about to install Ubuntu on two 250-gigabyte hard drives in a RAID 1 array, but I'm confused about how to partition my hard drives. How much space should I give to each partition? How many partitions should I create and where should I mount them? (I should mention that Ubuntu will be the only OS on this array.)
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just finished a build of a new GNU/Linux boxen with openSUSE 11.2. I have a MSI Big Bang Xpower X58 motherboard which has two SATA controller chips, one is the standard Intel ICH10R chip for SATA 3.0 Gb/s and one is the Marvell 9128 chip for SATA 6.0 Gb/s. The BIOS recognizes the Western Digital Caviar Black 6.0 Gb/s drive on either SATA controller chips, /however/ I am unable to install (and boot) when the drive is connected to the Marvell controlled ports. As you can guess, I'd like to boot from the faster interface!
1. The BIOS allows me to select the Western Digital drive as a secondary boot device, so I know, at least at the BIOS level, it's there. This is true whether I have the drive connected to the Intel or Marvell ports. (The DVD drive is the primary boot device.)
2. When trying to install openSUSE 11.2 from DVD, the installer says that it can't find any hard drives on my system when I have the drive connected to the Marvell port. The installer finds the drive fine when it is connected to the Intel port.
3. I installed everything with the drive connected to the Intel port. I switched the drive to the Marvell port afterward and the system refuses to boot completely, stalling at some point where it starts to look for other filesystem partitions. This led me to conclude that perhaps the problem is with openSUSE and not hardware weirdness with the system having two separate SATA controllers?
I have a SATA drive that worked fine. Then I installed two more hard drives into my system. When these hard drives are installed, if I try to access the SATA drive in Linux, it will start lightly clicking and then the drive will become unavailable. If I power on the machine without the other two hard drives then it works fine. What could be causing this to happen? I don't think it's heat because the two hard drives are far away from the SATA drive.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm breaking into the OS drive side with RAID-1 now. I have my server set up with a pair of 80 GB drives, mirrored (RAID-1) and have been testing the fail-over and rebuild process. Works great physically failing out either drive. Great! My next quest is setting up a backup procedure for the OS drives, and I want to know how others are doing this.
Here's what I was thinking, and I'd love some feedback: Fail one of the disks out of the RAID-1, then image it to a file, saved on an external disk, using the dd command (if memory serves, it would be something like "sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=backupfilename.img") Then, re-add the failed disk back into the array. In the event I needed to roll back to one of those snapshots, I would just use the "dd" command to dump the image back on to an appropriate hard disk, boot to it, and rebuild the RAID-1 from that.
Does that sound like a good practice, or is there a better way? A couple notes: I do not have the luxury of a stack of extra disks, so I cannot just do the standard mirror breaks and keep the disks on-hand, and using something like a tape drive is also not an option.
so I setup a raid ten system and I was wondering what that difference between the active and spare drives is ? if I have 4 active drives then 2 the two stripes are then mirrored right?

I know I can simply create a degraded raid array and copy the data to the other drive like this: mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 missing /dev/sdb1
But I want the specific disk to keep the raw ext3 filesystem so I can still use it from FreeBSD. When using the command above the disk will be a raid disk and I can't do a mount /dev/sdb1 anymore. A little background info. The drives in question are used as backup drives for a couple of Linux and FreeBSD servers. I am using the Ext3 filesystem to make sure I can quickly recover the data since both FreeBSD and Linux can read from that without problems. If someone has a different solution for that (2 drives in raid 1 that are readable by FreeBSD and writeable by Linux),
I have a 4 disk raid 5 array on my Ubuntu 10.10 box. They are /dev/sd[c,d,e,f].Smartctl started notifying me that /dev/sde had some bad sectors and the number of errors was increasing each day. Where can I find comprehensive information on optimizing Linux? I keep searching online but seem to get only to performance monitoring. I don't want to run a lighter version of Linux or upgrade my hardware! Just want to get my current distro and future ones I might install to run at its best.
