Ubuntu Installation :: Add To Network To Access Shared Drives?

Jan 27, 2010

So, it took me a few years to come back to Linux. Had used it MANY years ago, and have been meaning to revisit it for some time now and finally have. Tried a couple other OSs that were just, frankly, garbage. But, not Ubuntu! So far, I haven't had any of the issues I've seen posted here. I decided to use my worst system as a test environment - an old Jetta Jetbook 9450. Loaded up with no problems, most noted none of the "searching for drivers" issue that I ran into with other OSs! All that being said, I do have one question - how do I get the laptop to join my network so that I can view my shared drives? In Windows, it's simply change WORKGROUP to my network name. Been flipping through the options, and I'm sure I may have overlooked it.

Ubuntu Networking :: 11.04 - No Way To Access SMB Shared Drives Using Nautilus

May 7, 2011

After upgrade to 11.04 I have no way to access SMB shared drives using Nautilus. When I click on "Network / Windows Network" I have the message: "unable to mount location failed to retrieve list from server". Couple of remarks: This is a regression It's not only a "Windows" network - this label has to be renamed. The message does not help the average user at all - this is a geeky way of communicating with the end-user.

OpenSUSE Network :: Can't Connect To Shared Drives

Jul 24, 2011

I just upgraded from SuSE 11.3 to 11.4. For some reason, I can no longer access my shared drive from any other home computer. I can get out to the internet. I can ping other PCs on the network. Other PCs can ping me. My router sees all computers, and has assigned IP addresses dynamically. I have a shared folder, exported as an NFS mount point, that used to work! I've tried setting up Samba shares. Nothing! I disabled the local firewall, as my router already has a firewall running. Nothing! Nothing I've tried seems to work. I can not see that NFS mount point from any of my windows PCs. (I only have the one Linux server running, so I can't say whether another Linux box would see it or not!)

OpenSUSE Install :: Mounting Network-shared Drives Fails When Upgrading To 11.4

Mar 14, 2011

I have a D-Link DNS-323 network drive which mounts at multiple points to my filesystem when booting. I had to make some fstab changes when I upgraded from 11.2->11.3 last year, and now the same thing seems to be happening since I've upgraded to 11.4. When I login to my profile the desktop hangs and no icons appear. I cannot open a Nautilus window, or access ALT-F2, however just about every other program works fine. Since I disabled the fstab lines (slightly modified when copied here to generalize):

Code:

#//192.168.123.xxx/SHARED-FOLDER1/User-folder /home/user/Documents cifs guest,_netdev,uid=user,gid=users
#//192.168.123.xxx/SHARED-FOLDER2 /home/user/SHARED-FOLDER2 cifs credentials=/home/user/.scripts/.creds,_netdev,uid=user,gid=users 0 0

the desktop icons load and Nautilus works. Can I adjust my fstab syntax to correct this and get my network drives back? I think last year the issue was in referencing the ".creds" file...

OpenSUSE Network :: Desktop Icons For Mounted Windows Shared Drives

Jul 26, 2011

I mount the shared drives (on a Windows Server 2003) and I can access them from my home directory. Everything is mostly fine. But I also get desktop icons for the shared drives, which I don't like since I prefer a bare desktop. Sometimes I have deleted desktop icons from /usr/share/dist/... but these are not there.

Ubuntu :: Cant Access Windows Shared Network?

Jan 20, 2010

When i first installed ubuntu on my laptop i could access the shared folders i had put on the network with windows through ubuntu, read and write files, copy and paste them etc. I tried recently going to Places>Network and i get this error: failed to retrieve share list from server

It never used to do this, in fact when i went to places the network was not called "network", it was my own title. i can connect to the server with the ip address, but that only lets me take files from the windows network, and not the other way around. I really have two issues

1. cannot place files on the network from my ubuntu laptop
2. cannot connect to shared folder network from places like i could before

Ubuntu :: Quanta Plus Can Not Access Network Drives

Feb 13, 2010

My Quanta Plus can not access files on my network shares.I have my network drives mounted in /etc/fstab and they work great with all programs EXCEPT Quanta Plus. When trying to open any file on a network drive I get the following error: The file <filename> could not be loaded, as it was not possible to read from it. Check if you have read access to this file.I can use any other editor, Screem, Bluefish, gedit, pico, etc and open, modify and save files on these same network drives. Something I just realized is that Quanta Plus is a KDE app. Could it be that there is some KDE networking component that I am missing? This does happen to be a fresh Ubuntu install on a new computer. I have Quanta Plus installed on my old computer and it works fine with these same network shares (same fstab file), but over the years I have installed many programs on it and perhaps it has a KDE networking piece that hasn't been installed on this new computer.

OpenSUSE Network :: [smb] Lost Access To Shared Directory?

Mar 24, 2010

Unfortunately I haven't been able to figure out yet how to share specific directories only, so I set up my Samba server to share users' home directories (which is not a security issue here since the only possible client is my other machine). My user's home directory contains a symlinked directory on another hard drive partition, which I had to explicitly share to be able to access it from the other machine. This setup has been working for months now, but for a reason that escapes me at the moment it stopped working today, presumably after samba got updated from 3.4.2-1.1.3.1 to 3.4.3-3.2.1.

The error message on the client (Windows XP/SP3) for this one above mentioned directory, and for this directory alone, is "Access denied"; I can access all other directories fine.

Ubuntu Networking :: 9.10 - How To Access Network Drives On VirtualBox Guest OS

Feb 13, 2010

I currently have VirtualBox installed on my Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop. I have windows xp as a guest os and it has network shares on it. My question is, is there a way for another computer to access those network drives on the guest os in virtualbox? I don't want to search for hours on end on google, a simple no would be fine - however if it is possible let me know because when I am in windows on another computer that has windows as a host os it sees it in the windows network folder but it says "....network location not found" or something similar but it still shows a pc picture of the virtual os of the virtual box program running in ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Home Network - Media Drives Are Automatically Mounted To Allow Access If The Admin User Is Not Logged In?

Jul 9, 2010

This is the set up I have: PC downstairs by a tv, with 3TB of storage containing my media, connected to the tv too. HTPC upstairs by another tv and connected to it. A few laptops and other desktops around the house which are windows based

I want the downstairs pc to act as a file server and to run my torrent client, it is running Ubuntu desktop version and has xbmc installed too for use with the tv. The upstairs htpc has xbmc live on and will access the media from the file server. What I am looking to do is to be able to log into my ubuntu machine remotely from a laptop running windows so I can manage the files and add torrents for download etc, but for this to be a complete remote session, rather than taking control over what is already being shown on the downstairs pc, like VNC does in windows.

I have two user accounts set up on the main ubuntu machine, the admin account and a media user account which is set to go straight to xbmc after log in. Also how can I make sure that the media drives are automatically mounted to allow access if the admin user is not logged in?

Ubuntu Installation :: 8.04->10.04 Lost Write Access To Shared Volume

May 6, 2010

Computer: Dell Latitude D600
- Ram: 1 GB
- HD: Hitachi ATA HTS541680J9AT00
- OS: Win XP Pro & Ubuntu 10.04 (Kernel

[Code].....

Upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04 and ran Update Manager. After this, sda6, the shared volume where I keep my documents, is read/write accessible from Windows, but read-only accessible from Ubuntu.

I've tried chmod and chown, but in each case, changes to permissions or group are prohibited. So is copying of files to the shared volume, and modifying files (e.g., via OpenOffice).

Additional info: Ubuntu takes a long time to boot after GRUB and during the splash, with the disk drive activity light on continuously.

General :: Use Network Drives As Mount Points During Installation?

Apr 7, 2010

Is it possible to use network storage locations as mount points during installation?

cause i want to separate system (ubuntu) with data (personal files).

eg. if i have 5 computers i don't want to recreate /home/david 5 times.

so i want to mount networkdrive/home to /home in local ubuntu server.

so ALL users home folders could be used and maybe also networkdrive/projects to /projects.

in that way its ok if i by accident repartitioned the local ubuntu server cause all data is not there on that server, but in the data server.

is separating "data" from "logic" good in this case?

and is it possible? what protocol should i use for the mapping over internet? (maybe the server is in Sweden, and the data is in Norway).

Is there any possible way to make all these drives writeable from Suse? I'm really hoping someone would be able to help me. Ubuntu :: OSX Sees But Won't Access Shared USB HDD?

I have three computers; Ubuntu desktop, Windows 7 laptop, and OSX laptop 10.5.8. I have a shared usb hard drive on my Ubuntu desktop. My Windows 7 machine sees and accesses it just fine. My OSX computer sees it in the finder window, but says it can't access it because it can't find the original file. I have tried to "repair the alias" but it doesn't work. I have shared another folder on the Ubuntu desktop, but the new share is on the desktop internal hard drive. OSX can access that share with no problems. What in the world is going on? If Windows 7 can see and access, is this an OSX problem or is there a terminal command that I am missing? I am networking using Samba on the Ubuntu computer and the explorer/finder windows on the Windows7/OSX computers.

OpenSUSE Network :: Trouble With Permissions On Mounted Network Drives

Jan 15, 2010

I use Suse 11.2. I mounted 5 folders from fstab. 2 of them work but 3 do not. The 3 folders that do not work let me enter them, and they let me see everything. I can even create or delete a folder on them, if I am just browsing with konqueror. The problem is that I have a program that will not read them. It's a program made for my company and apparently it will only read folders that have all of their permissions set to read and write. The program will read the first two because their permissions are set to Owner, Group, and Others, can view and modify content. (The network folders are all windows server 2003 computers). The 3 folders the program will not read are set to Owner can view and modify content, but Group and Others are "can view content" If I try to change those permissions even in root, it tells me that access is denied.
