Ubuntu :: Converting 2 Mirrored NTFS Drives To Ext Format?
Mar 15, 2011
I have 2 drives mirrored via windows software raid and I plan to toss the drives into an Ubuntu server soon where they will also be mirrored. The server will have another drive for booting. What is the best way to get these mirrored drives into ext format while preserving my data? I plan to use software raid in Ubuntu as well. My only idea is to format a 3rd drive as ext and copy all the files over, seems inefficient though.

I've installed Debian Squeeze twice using CD1. First time with a high-speed internet connection using a mirror, 2nd time without. With a mirror, much more is installed, and clearly a much more complete installation. What packages would I install to make a basic CD install more like a mirrored install? Is there a list on the CD somewhere?

I know this is more of the Openoffice question but I felt I would find some solution here for this. At my work I am using lot of PDF files which are created using Openoffice Calc (Spreadsheet). I want to convert those PDFs to Calc file again for editing. Currently I am using a windows Machine with able2extract pdf converter for converting PDFs to .xls file. But it is not ideal solution for Linux and Openoffice users here.

I am building my first rpm package and I cannot seem to find out how to change an existing .tgz to a .tar.gz as required by the rpm .spec file - I've attempted to search on this, but I can't find the exact command I'm looking for. Specifically, I hope to avoid having to untar the .tgz and simply convert it to the .tar.gz format.

I'm trying to convert a 3gp (mobile phone video) file to PAL DVD format (which is I believe MPEG2 video and one of a few audio choices, in an MPEG PS container). But while the file plays fine in mplayer and vlc, my efforts to convert it, using either VLC or devede, always seem to result in either the converted video being speed up (noticeably, we're talking twice as fast or so not 5%), or in the audio going mickey-mouse. How can I get the file converted correctly? Bearing in mind it needs to be PAL not NTSC (so a lot of stuff I might find online isn't going to work as-is)

I have a whole bunch of wma files I want to convert to a more liked format like wv flac or shn. Shntool does not seem to want to do that soundconverter and soundkonverter both refuse too. My wma format is wma1 or wmal cannot tell if it is 1 the number or l the letter L.
1. They play in xine straight off. Xine is in your synaptic
2. To convert quickly install dBpoweramp under wine again quick and no fuss.

i wanted to change the format of my backup drive from ext4 to ntfs. what i thought would be possible without erasing the data, was simply done by formating the drive. but because this took only 6 sec, i have still hope that my data was not completely destroyed. are there any possibilities that i get my data back? i unmounted the drive afterwards and did not write anything to it.

I have been searching for a while for a program to convert .flac files I rip off of cd's with my laptop (running Fedora 11) to a usable iTunes format for my desktop (running Win XP). The cd drive on my desktop is currently broken, so my fix of ripping on my desktop, then using Rhythmbox on my laptop is temporarily unavailable.
Any suggestions? I've tried audiokonverter, soundconverter, audio-convert-mod and each come up with errors or wouldn't install.

Can I ask for some advice in converting a video (from my phone) which is a 3gp file into something more universal. I use audokonverter for audio files and this gives me a menu right-click option to convert a song from (say) wav to mp3. Is there an equivalent for videos? I am using opensuse 11.4 64 bit and have mplayer, xine and vlc installed plus the necessary codecs. Or is it simpler to use ffmpeg in a c/l environment

i have a usb stick divided in two; a partition of NTFS for the most part and a small annoying part of a few Mb in UDF which mounts every time as a cdrom. how do i get rid of the small UDF part?
I have tried to format everything as one big chunk in NTFS with Gparted without success.
I have also tried something i found on the net under windows:
1.click Start>>run>> type "CMD">> enter
2.type format X: /FS:NTFS (X would be the drive letter)
but it won't let me format the UDF part.

I have a nice computer i have been dual booting between either ubuntu or win7. i am wanting to remove win7 and install winxp sp3, so i can use media center with my xbox. i preferred that win7 work, but since my copy is not genuine, its authenticity is believed to be the culprit in connection errors with the xbox. i have not been able to find a linux alternative, which i doubt even exists due to the proprietary nature of the xbox.
So, my question is how do i reformat the win7 hard drive? are there issues i need to worry about that may reformat both hard drives on accident? and when the hard drive is formatted, will i be prompted to choose which hard drive to install win xp on?

I am trying to install windows 7 over Ubuntu, however when i run the install disk it tells me that my hard drive is not formatted in the correct format. I have then loaded up Ubuntu, tried to re-format using Gparted and it won't let me re-format my hard drive when I right click on it. The only option I get when right-clicking is to unmount the drive.
