General :: Any Real Alternative To CPRM-protected SD Memory Cards Beside USB Flash Drives?

Apr 19, 2010

Before buying an SD memory card, I'd like to know something more about the CPRM protection, in particular:Does CPRM influence the way I am supposed to access my own data? That is, does CPRM encrypt it? Could CPRM prevent me from accessing my own data?Is it possible to disable or eliminate CPRM from either the memory card or the card reader? Are there manufacturers selling CPRM-free SD memory cards? Is there any real alternative to CPRM-protected SD memory cards beside USB flash drives? Is Linux support for SD cards good?

Hardware :: What About SDXC Memory Cards?

Sep 13, 2010

Yes i read about Tuxera and their solution for embedded system even on linux but don't exist some project free?In the 3.0 specification, the electronic interface of SDHC and SDXC cards is the same. The decision to label cards with a capacity greater than 32GB as SDXC and to use a different filesystem is due solely to the limitations in creating larger filesystems in certain versions of Microsoft Windows. Other operating systems, such as Linux, make no distinction between SDHC and SDXC cards, as long as the card contains a compatible filesystem. So essentially is possible use this memory card as mass storage but if you want use it for manage data taken using photo camera or video camera (that use exFat, the propetary file system of microsoft), don't exist any open solution for linux?

Applications :: Format The SD Memory Card Or Any Other Alternate Way To Format The Card?

Jan 25, 2011

I am trying to format 4 GB sd memory using mkfs.vfat. I want to use the card both in linux and windows so I am formatting with Vfat filesystem. When I format the card from command line with "mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/mmcblk1" I am getting a warning message like "unable to get drive geometry, using default 255/63" but the data in the card is erased.

But when I mount the card and checks for the size using df -h its showing 1 GB instead of 4 GB. how to format the SD memory card or any other alternate way to format the card.

Ubuntu :: Two Hard Drives - Format One Of Them ?

Mar 30, 2011

I have a nice computer i have been dual booting between either ubuntu or win7. i am wanting to remove win7 and install winxp sp3, so i can use media center with my xbox. i preferred that win7 work, but since my copy is not genuine, its authenticity is believed to be the culprit in connection errors with the xbox. i have not been able to find a linux alternative, which i doubt even exists due to the proprietary nature of the xbox.

So, my question is how do i reformat the win7 hard drive? are there issues i need to worry about that may reformat both hard drives on accident? and when the hard drive is formatted, will i be prompted to choose which hard drive to install win xp on?

Ubuntu :: Converting 2 Mirrored NTFS Drives To Ext Format?

What is the best way to get these mirrored drives into ext format while preserving my data? I plan to use software raid in Ubuntu as well. My only idea is to format a 3rd drive as ext and copy all the files over, seems inefficient though.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Flash And 2 X Nvidia Graphic Cards 9800GT SLI?

Mar 17, 2011

I am finding a lot of issues with flash in 11.4 release. As I know it is flash issue, because some people after updating flash on 11.3 got the same problem.

Flash seams to be crashing or/and slowing down web browser. After trying to figure out where is the problem, i found that:
1) removing SLI helped a little bit
2) updating to beta (270) nvidia drivers helped a little bit (moving window with flash animation from one screen to another one that is connected to different graphic card does not crash the browser anymore)

But still the problem exists.

For example, sometimes when i minimize the window with flash animation and i open new window (e.g. with spreadsheet) and move it on the same place where was previous window with flash, I can see this flash animation as a background of the new window....

Also, when i am moving the window with flash around, the flash disappears or gets gray.

Sometimes, ..... does not load the movie, but if i open the movie in VM windows, it works fine. After reloading Xwindows it works for a while also in opensuse.

Now for the problem, when I have both the 1TB drives in I can not format or mount either 1TB drives. Says Device is in use or "The device file '/dev/sdc1' does not exist"

Now if I take one of the 1TB drives out I can format, partition, and mount it no problem...it only seems to be a problem when both drives are connected...

Fedora :: UUID Format Of Drives Changed With New Motherboard?

Mar 11, 2010

I am trying to recover some data on some drives that are in the same LVM. When I upgraded the motherboard, I had complications getting the drives to all load under the LVM, and in the process I made the mistake of formatting one of the drives. The problem now is that the UUID changed on the drive so when I try to mount the LVM it can't find device with a certain UUID. When I try to set the UUID back to the old one it says 'Invalid UUID format'.

I can set it to a UUID generated through 'uuidgen', si I then noticed that the format of that UUID is different than the old one which I'm trying to set it to. Why is that? Is there a way I can get it to change to the old one in the different format?
The old format: yQtrVB-5jCk-vF10-05c2-AcDL-GNn1-ivdxxh
The new format: d5224587-a6cd-4a66-a12b-d7b75eec5871

Software :: Program - Information On Drives Space Memory

Mar 5, 2010

A few years back when I was running Linux most of the time I used a program that gave me information on my machine.

It had different themes and such, and it would usually rest vertically along the side of the desktop. It would tell one information on drives, space, memory, I think you could even have it tell you the weather if you entered geographical information.

I know I'm being a bit vague but that's all I can remember, does anyone recall this program? It was pretty popular back then...so I wonder if it's still under development.

Fedora Installation :: Software RAID With Advanced Format WD-EARS Drives?

Dec 31, 2010

My System Intel Core Duo E5300 Mobo - Gigabyte G31M-ES2L 1GB DDR2 800MHz RAM 4 x WD20EARS HDD I have been trying to install Fedora or Ubuntu for over a week. I thought it would take an hour and i would be away. I have been trying to install using the mdadm Software RAID feature. Everytime it takes about a day to format the drives and then i get an installation error. The drives state they are ready to use as is on any operating system other then WinXP, but this does not appear to be the case.

I am very new to Fedora... I have been doing some reading.[URL].. That information has been promising. I have been able to get into Fdisk off the live CD but i can't figure out how or if it is possible to do what i want it to.

Has anyone had any luck getting these drives to function correctly in a software RAID? I have had good luck with WD drives in the past and just assumed these drives would do what i wanted to but alas i have been proven wrong.

The partitions i wanted was...
- A 2GB swap parition
- A 10 GB RAID 1 partition for Fedora
- The remaining space as a Raid 5 for files.

Am i just banging my head against a wall here, or is this possible.

Ubuntu :: USB Flash Memory Not Detected

Oct 3, 2010

I've just installed ubuntu 10.04 on a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge. Problem is that it generally doesn't detect the USB memories that I've been trying to use. On two occasions it did in fact detect the flash memory, but it couldn't open/read it for some reason (USB memories works on other computers), but all the other times the USB flash memory didn't even show up in Nautilus.

I am no techie so I'm not sure how to check what the problem is here. I've been googling it but either it refers to some specific stuff that doesn't cover my case or it simply is too technical for average users like me to understand.

It is working fine. If I plug in a flash drive (memory stick or whatever one wants to call it), Ubuntu sees it and it appears in the menu but is grayed out. When I remove the device, it disappears from the menu. This tells me that VirtualBox sees them. How do I get to access these USB devices? What have I omitted to do?

Ubuntu :: Multiple Flash Drives For Storage?

Jan 4, 2010

I am running Karmic on a stripped laptop, and running it off a usb thumbdrive. Its purpose is mainly as a slide show/video show inset in a tableI did not really want to go out and buy a HDD, since it does not need to store that much. Then I went to aldi and they had 8gb flash drives for $5, so I got 6. The ultimate question comes down to the best way to make use of them. I ordered a 7 slot USB hum off ebay for cheap, and I was going to go from there. would it be easier/better to just plug them in and make links to them from the normal folders and just operate directly from there, or is there a better option. I guess a usb raid array could be neat
