Slackware :: Disabling High Intensity At The Video Card Level (text Mode)?
Jun 17, 2011
Kernel 2.6.21.5, slackware 12.0
When you do 'man bash', you'll see some words are highlighted. I'll say that the video card has used high intesity in these instances. How do I disable this video card capability? Can this only be done by recompiling the kernel? Of course, I am talking about the text consoles, i.e., the video card in text mode.

I've been playing around with Damn Small Linux 4.4.10 on my Dell Inspiron 3000 laptop for quite a while now, and this is the first time I've been downright stumped. To make a long story short, I'm trying to play 480p video on a machine with a 233 MHz Pentium processor, 112 MB of ram, and a Neomagic MagicGraph 128XD graphics card (NM2160). Crazy? Maybe, but I don't think so. I'm using MPlayer set to Xv mode with the XFree86 4.3.0 server, and so far, I've been able to get it to play 360p mpegs with minimal stuttering. However, MPlayer crashes with 480p. This is because the 128XD only has 2 MB of memory, which, after the 1024x768x16 screen takes its share, doesn't leave enough room for a 640x480 overlay.
The creators of MPlayer are aware of this limitation, and suggest adding the following line to my XF86Config file: Option "OverlayMem" "829440"
As I understand it, this is supposed to extend the video card's frame buffer into system memory, thus allowing the higher resolution video to play. However, it doesn't work, based on this output from my XFree86 log file: cannot reserve 829440 bytes for overlay...
Some other suspicious-looking lines from the log file:

I ordered this USB 802.11n dongle for about $10 and am having problems.I found a firmware related bug (Bug #595455) that keeps it from working out of the box and got around that. I put the right firmware file in the right place and CAN CONNECT TO B or G Access Points.hen I put my AP in N-Only mode, I can see the network, but cannot associate. With the AP in mixed mode I can Associate using G.The most interesting thing I found was something that had very
few google hits (like 4). In the dmesg output after associating I see the message:
Successfully associated, ht not enabled(0, 1)The most interesting thing about this is the (0, 1) at the end.I don't know what that means but it seems like a clue as to what the problem is.This device uses the realtek chipset 8191S, there are conflicting reports on this, but all the reported possibilities seem to use the same driver from realtek (rtl8712_8188_8191_8192SU_usb_linux_v2.6.0006.2010 0625).Here is some random info:
Dmesg output:
[85082.620027] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
[85082.754586] usb 1-3: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

I'm running 10.10, but this seems to be an ongoing problem. While every other OS on the planet seems to be able to high level format LS-120 super floppies in their IDE drive, Linux can't. DR DOS can. OS/2 can. Windows 98 forward can.
We aren't talking low level format here. We are talking "quick" format where a new FAT and label are written to the media along with the high level markings/surface scan.
I can load a disk, copy to it, delete from it, but cannot perform a high level format.

setup the correct mode for my laptop-video card-monitor
Video card - ATI mobility Radeon X1600
External Monitor - Belinea b.display 2 22"
Right now the external monitor is working, but sometimes it goes black for 2-3 seconds and then works again. This happens sometimes 5 times in a row, sometimes once, sometimes none. Other issue, when I install any new kernel it doesn't work. I get weird picture on monitor.

Most kernels are written in low level programming languages such as C and Assembly. Would it be possible to write a kernel in a high level language such as Python? Many high-level languages are themselves written in C.

I'm sick of screwing around trying to script a clean solution to burn multiple files and folders to CDs and DVDs with wodim, growisofs and genisoimage.I'm looking for a high level command line program that uses sensible defaults and takes arguments something like this:[program-name] [cd|dvd] /path/to/dir1/ /path/to/dir2/ /path/to/file ...It should then do all the low level copying and ISO generation transparently and just burn the damn disk!Does anyone have any suggestions? I've looked at several programs but it seems there are too many choices to trawl through and not enough information about them online.

Finally replaced my incredibly antiquated Ti 4200 with a GeForce 9600 GT, but I'm having a few problems. The main one would be that I can't see anything when I drop to terminal (the monitor shuts off)- I could when I had a spare svga monitor hooked up through an adapter, but now I'm using dual DVI monitors. Do not have an svga cable to spare at the moment. The second seems to be a doublethink problem- a good while back when this computer was a fresh install, I could have sworn I had the option for the resolution 1680x1024- this is an *essential* resolution for twinview, because my second monitor is 1280x1024, and setting this widescreen to 5:4 is just... wrong.Simple restart solved the terminal issue (I hotplugged the monitors). Resolution thing is still a standing issue. I have a 1050 capable monitor, but the display portion is an inch shorter than the widescreen.

I'm putting this here because it's so weird nobody will think of it, and I need help. I installed Slackware 13.1 a couple of months back. Today, I decided I wanted to hear something. But the video card's hdmi thing took over as the sound device. lsmod sees more snd modules than you've had hot dinners (all ac97 stuff & hda_intel stuff)ls /dev/dsp* just showed /dev/dsp1The sound is some crappy little ac97 thing (CMI9761A) and the video is an ATI/AMD hd4650. I got the ac97 'back' by removing agpgart from the /etc/rc.d/rc.modules script :-o, Now I have /dev/dsp (only) and sound works

I have an integrated intel video and latest xserver-xorg-video-intel driver(using only stable repo). Now I wanna watch high-res video. From the bits of info collected from all over internet I understood that I need to:
1.aptitude install libdrm libva.
2.compile or find the .deb mplayer-vaapi and install it.
3.add -vo vaapi -va vaapi to the mplayer command line in gnome-mplayer.
My question : is that correct or did I miss something? Do I have to compile latest libdrm and libva or the ones from the squeeze repo will be good? Do I need kms enabled, i.e. install firmware-linux-nonfree?

I have browsed the init scripts and have yet to determine how this "magic" is performed. I would be grateful if a local guru would point me to how the scripts automatically proceed into run level 2 when exiting run level 1

I was reading about ext3 feature and I have read about its journaling modes. I would like to ask what is the default journaling mode of ext3 fs in slackware(or is it in all distro using ext3)? I'll install slackware when my new pc arrive and the fs I will use will be ext3 and I like it to have data=journal mode for its journaling. I have read in some wiki how to set the journaling mode into data=journal mode.
Code: # tune2fs -O has_journal -o journal_data /dev/sdXY Do i need to issue this command or is this the default mode in ext3 in slackware?

When i try to play HD (even with 720p) video the CPU load is almost 100%. I'm using vlc player and the movie is barely watchable. If i switch to Movie Player, the CPU load is slightly decreased, but after 2-3 minutes the audio goes out of sync, so no solution there. I have an nvidia 8600gt graphics card and the proper driver installed, every compiz effect works flawlessly without the slightest increase in CPU load and a dual core 2,1 GHz AMD processor. It shouldn't be a hardware issue.

Hi everybody! I am completely stumped with KDE's Dolphin's preview policy. It started with me realizing that when as much as I mouse over an encrypted file (say, an ODS file created and encrypted with OpenOffice), KDE pops up a password prompt. The culprit identifies itself as kio_thumbnail. This is a feature so apparently useless, I would like to disable it no matter what. I know a work-around: hiding the Information panel seems to work. But I like the information panel. On top of that, the same kio_thumbnail does on occasion decide that my computer is underutilized (it feels like it happens during the idle times). It allocates my entire RAM, all 4 GiB of it, and does something fancy. It doesn't crash, however, and goes away a few minutes after I poke the computer.
I don't want a daemonized thumbnailer, is there a way to disable kio_thumbnail or make it be quiet and do nothing? I tried fooling around with Dolphin. I went into Settings / Configure Dolphin... and
1. Disabled all services,
2. Unchecked everything in General / Previews.
I did the same to Konqueror.
As far as I can tell, this had no effect whatsoever. Dolphin still previews all the files it previewed before, and still tries to preview encrypted files when Information panel is open. I am running unmodified Dolphin 1.4 on KDE 4.4.3, the same ones that came with Slackware 13.1 x64.
